About Bloomsburg University Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education. Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,400, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields.

> Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

> Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. Governance is through the State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors and through the university’s Council of Trustees.

> Cost—About $5,358 per semester for Pennsylvania residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans), $13,396 for non-residents.

> Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,026 per year.

> School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, originally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and gold since the 1920’s. In the early 1930’s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

2011 Baseball Media Guide

Season Preview For any baseball coach, assembling the perfect team requires a precise selection of talents and skills. Entering his sixth season at the helm of the Bloomsburg University program, Head Coach Mike Collins hopes that the 2011 team he has assembled has the necessary balance of offensive and defensive components for a successful season. “We return the heart of our offense,” notes Collins, “and we’ve complemented that with the addition of guys who are going to make us even better. We’ve taken an already pretty potent offense and added some new elements to it.” At the plate, Collins has recruited a solid class of hitters to supplement his returning crew. In addition, this year’s Huskies include nine pitchers ready to make their collegiate debut on the mound. “We’ve brought in a lot of new faces with a lot of potential,” reports Collins. “Assistant Coach Dustin Johnson has done a terrific job developing the guys.”

BULLPEN This year’s team will have expansive depth in the bullpen, which will give Collins ample options to fit his game plans. Senior Matt Kline looks to recover from injury this season, and if his strength returns, he will surely provide quality innings of relief. Two right-handed pitchers have been recruited out of Twin Valley High School. Eric Geedey and Brad Smith will continue to be teammates at Bloomsburg and add extra depth to the Huskies’ bullpen. A number of other young recruits will be tested on the mound, including Gino D’Amato, Matt Dean, Nick Donofry, and Dean Kenniff. Scott Runzer is a transfer from West Chester who could take to the mound on top of backing up first base. Like Deemer, Runzer will give Collins versatility as both a position player and pitcher.

STARTING PITCHERS CATCHER This season, the Huskies’ No. 1 pitcher will be Vinny Voorhees. The junior southpaw has established himself as one of the top pitchers in the PSAC and Atlantic Region and continues to improve. Captain Mike Rossetti had a strong fall and looks to have a great senior year. The lefty will be relied upon for his leadership and effectiveness on the mound. Howie Deemer, recruited from Virginia Commonwealth, is recovering from injury and has shown prowess in the outfield to accompany a command of three pitches. Deemer will take on a role as one of the team’s starters this spring.

Behind the plate, Nick Eversole returns to be the starting catcher for this year’s Huskies. The sophomore has demonstrated his capabilities to control the game from behind the plate, calling a great game while receiving and throwing the ball well. He will be counted on to be one of the conference’s better hitters at the position and can string together great at-bats at the plate. Freshmen Mike DiVona and Tim Kurucz will compete for the number two spot, and both are anticipated to see some playing time as needed. INFIELD

Collins has high hopes for freshman Casey Cooperman, who found success at Parkland High School, leading his team deep into Pennsylvania State playoffs in several seasons. Despite his youth, the right-hander has the polish and poise to be an useful pitcher for BU. Kyle Hunter, who comes to Bloomsburg from Lehigh Carbon Community College, was a contributor for his District IV champion Lehighton team and could immediately be successful on Danny Litwhiler field.

At first base, Jerry Lloyd had a terrific season in 2010. Though he is recovering from injury, the senior looks to be an explosive offensive player for BU this season. At second base, 2010 Second-Team All-PSAC East honoree Joey Ianiero was a spark plug for last season’s Huskies, leading the team in batting average and runs batted in. His power and speed make the senior an efficient hitter and runner, and in his role of captain, he will command the infield as a team leader.

2011 Baseball Media Guide

Season Preview On the other side of the infield, captain Keith Meyer will attempt to fill the shoes of All-PSAC shortstop Tony Donofry. Meyer worked hard in the off-season and returns stronger at the plate with improved confidence. His proficiency in stealing bases will put added pressure on opposing defenses. Third-baseman Jarrod Kramer rounds out the Huskies’ starters in the infield. The junior is a steady performer and continues to improve at the plate and as a defenseman. Nick Mazza is a talented hitter that joins the team ready to backup Kramer and the rest of the infield. Aaron Russell is another newcomer who will provide offensive and defensive options for Bloomsburg. Seth Pauling returns from a remarkable fall and is another strong hitter who could be used in the role as designated hitter. Runzer will also see time as DH to supplement his pitching duties. OUTFIELD

SEASON OUTLOOK Bloomsburg begins its 2011 campaign in Newport News, Va., at February’s Builder Invitational hosted by The Apprentice School. During Spring Break, the Huskies will tour West Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee before returning to the Keystone State for a visit to Lincoln University on March 16. BU kicks off its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule on the weekend of March 18 and 19, including the team’s home-opener against Shippensburg University scheduled for that Saturday. The regular season continues through the end of April, culminating in the PSAC Championship tournament from May 11 to 14. Bloomsburg enters the season as an underdog in the PSAC East, but that is not something that bothers Collins. “Defensively, we’ve got to step it up a notch and help these young pitchers. We’ll look to our captains and veterans for leadership as we fight for a spot in the PSAC playoffs.” If Collins’ team has the right combination, it should have no trouble exceeding expectations.

In the outfield, Gino Wise returns to take his post on the right side. The senior is poised for a big offensive year, and his speed will be critical on defense. Newcomer Brad Smith had a terrific fall, showcasing power, speed, and the ability to hit for a high average. Smith is expected to start in center field but could also be utilized on the mound. Fairmont State transfer Vince Smarrelli will step in to fill the void in the outfield should Smith be called to the hill. Pitcher-outfielder Deemer joins the team after leading the Blue Mountain Summer League in hitting. Away from pitching, expect Deemer to see playing time in left field. Adding depth to the Husky lineup, Jordan Schainholz and Paul Rosa IV, a transfer from DeSales, have both demonstrated skill at the plate and the speed to be solid outfielders. Both should see playing time, particularly when Deemer and Smith are brought onto the mound.

Mike Collins is beginning his sixth season as the Huskies head baseball coach. In his first five years, Collins has led the Huskies to 84 wins. Over that span, the Huskies have had 13 All-PSAC East selections and one All-Region selection. Bloomsburg has narrowly missed reaching the PSAC playoffs in four of those seasons. The 2010 Huskies were eliminated from the playoffs in their final weekend of PSAC play. A potent 2010 offense that hit .326 returns six starters as well as three of its top four hitters. Collins also oversaw the renovation of Danny Litwhiler Field that included new dugouts, brick backstop, new elevated seating behind home plate and installation of a warning track as well as walkways. In addition, Collins directs the Huskies baseball camp programs. The Huskies offer three weeks of summer camp as well as seven clinics throughout the academic year. Collins came to Bloomsburg after spending four seasons as the top assistant at Binghamton University. A former Division I player, Collins was instrumental in the recruiting process for Binghamton, and played a prominent role in the success of the Bearcats program, helping the team to a berth in the America East playoffs in just their fourth season of Division One competition. He also held successful Crack of the Bat summer and winter camps for youngsters in the Greater Binghamton area. Collins previously served as head coach at Keystone College, compiling a 90-75 overall mark for the junior college in La Plume, Pa. His 2001 team won a school-record 18 consecutive games en route to a 28-12 record and runner-up finish in Region 19. In 2000 and 2001, Collins-coached teams earned pre-season national rankings, and he produced 11 all-region and two All-America players during his tenure at Keystone. Collins played Division I baseball at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in politics in 1996. He was a two-time team captain and four-year letterwinner. He resides in Riverside, Pa. with his wife Angie, his sons Graham and Landon, and his dogs Duke and Finnegan.

Dustin Johnson will begin his second season as member of the Bloomsburg University baseball staff in 2011. Johnson was a three-year letterwinner at Bloomsburg after transferring from Volunteer State in Tennessee. He was the ace of the staff in 2006 and 2007, over that two-year span he lead the team in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, and complete games. Johnson was a standout in the Valley summer collegiate league as well as the New York summer collegiate league. In the summer of 2008, Johnson coached the Sunbury/Norry American Legion team. Coach Johnson is a fixture at many camps and clinics including at Bucknell University and Penn State University baseball camps. Coach Johnson will be handling the pitching staff as well as off-campus recruiting.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. The membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.
