2011 SEASON PREVIEW

2011 Season Preview

Last season the Huskies roster was filled with youth and this year’s team will be similar in that there will be no seniors on the 2011 squad but with 17 returning players experience will be on their side. As a core group of players return with another year of collegiate soccer under their belts, the 2011 Huskies will have their sights set on post-season play. Head coach Paul Payne returns for his 13th year at the helm of the men’s soccer program. After a disappointing 2010 campaign Payne explains why this season will have a different outcome, “I’ve never seen a group tighter; they feed off each other. Working with a strength and conditioning coach in the offseason brought them together even more. They know each other as players and as people and they have a sense of who they are as a team, where last year it was a case of trying to find that identity.” “They are not afraid to hold each other accountable, themselves accountable or me accountable and I do the same to them” notes Payne. With a new comfort level the Huskies will look for positive outcomes on the pitch in 2011. FORWARDS After leading the team in assists his freshman year and goals his sophomore year Bryce Shaffer will again be the key ingredient in this year’s offense. His 10 goals last season ranked sixth best in the PSAC and his 0.62 goals per game average was second best in the conference.

Spending most of the season in the back, Anthony Manero is one to keep an eye on as he makes his way up higher in the field in 2011. “He’s a presence in the air, a different kind of player. Bryce is a stronger hold-the-ball kind of player. Anthony wins balls in the air, he’s aggressive” states Payne. Newcomer James Kiama will also be in the mix to bolster the attack. MIDFIELDERS The midfield should be strong for the Huskies as they return a solid core group of players. Starting in 13 of 16 games played Alex Rufus will be back at midfield along with sophomores Cale Bauer and Wes Kammerer and Fran Miller. Last season Miller finished second on the team in points with nine on two goals and five assists. Matt Cannon and Theo Guillory will also provide depth for the Huskies. Look for Guillory to make an impact with his pace and with a year’s experience should be more confident in his abilities. “They are so interchangeable it’s tough to say that they’re just central midfielders, that’s the good thing for us,” Payne notes. The versatility of the midfielders will allow Payne to maneuver players in-and-out of positions and roles in order to adjust to in-game situations. Two freshmen who will be expected to contribute are Nate Conrad and Nick Izzo. Both players possess skill, pace, and a defensive tenacity that should help the Huskies.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW

DEFENDERS A young group of defenders a year ago will now be looked upon to step up to the challenge at the back-line. Coach Payne is confident in his backs stating “times when players come back to play in the back and they’ve played for a number of years that’s a plus for anybody because they know each other, they know their tendencies, strengths and weaknesses.” Returners John Owens and Michael Del Sordi both saw plenty of action last year. Both players started in every contest they played with Owens appearing in 16 games and Del Sordi playing in 15 along with assisting on three goals. Matt Kaupp will be back with the Huskies in 2011 after starting in 11 of 12 games played during the 2009 season. Frank Dineen joins Bloomsburg as a transfer from Division I Wofford College in South Carolina. Dineen spent three seasons with the Terriers and his physical presence will be counted upon in the fall. Also look for freshman Roman Loboda to fight for a starting spot in the back.

PSAC best .835 save percentage and a 6.60 save per game average. Lobo started in six of seven appearances, making 32 saves in a little over 600 minutes between the posts. Kyle Pepper will also be returning and will push for a larger role this season. OVERALL With the new season comes a fresh start for Husky soccer. Bloomsburg’s mental approach will be a strength as Coach Payne explains “they expect to win, they’ve been together now and that’s why I feel so confident because the makeup of this team psychologically is great, they don’t doubt themselves. I don’t think we have a dominant player but 1-15 works as good as anyone in the country. ”

GOALKEEPERS There will be no shortage of talent at this position as BU brings back three sophomore goalies. “It’s wide open again” Payne explains. “We would like to have someone step-up and be a true number one but they’re all so good. There’s not such a huge drop off.” Bernie Roell and Ramon Lobo Jr. split time in net for the Huskies last season. Roell started in 10 games, owning a
