2011 SEASON PREVIEW

2011 Season Preview

For the first time since 1998 the women’s soccer team will have a new coach on the sideline. Former men’s soccer assistant Paul Mark Huckett takes the reigns of the women’s program for the 2011 season. “I would like to thank Sandra Dickson for all her efforts over the years in building a very respectable and successful team within the PSAC” Huckett states. “Myself and assistant coach Michael Eade are very excited with the squad we have inherited and look forward to adding our own style to the team.” The Huskies return 19 players from last year’s 13-5-3 team in addition to welcoming seven incoming freshmen to camp. Of the 26 players, three will be goalies and the other 23 will consist of field players. With the majority of the team back from their fourth place finish in the PSAC and a second round appearance in the NCAA tournament, the Huskies will look to integrate incoming players into an already successful team. In the short amount of time coach Huckett has spent with the women’s team, it is evident that work ethic and attitude will not be a problem. “Team morale and work ethic has been outstanding in the early parts of preseason and we aim to take that into the season. We believe we have a strong squad and we hope to have a successful year on and off the field as a team. The squad is united and understands that everything we do is as a team.” FORWARDS Bloomsburg brings back four forwards from last year, all of which saw plenty of action during the 2010 season. Leading

the way for the Huskies up top will be sophomore standout Tara Huber. “Tara is a very neat and tidy player who can certainly score some goals for us” states Huckett. An AllPSAC second team selection a year ago, Huber will again be an offensive threat as she comes off a rookie season in which she scored 11 goals and assisted on four more. Her 26 points was second most on last year’s team. Also returning up top for the Huskies will be Jamie Vaniver, Samantha Fox, and Katy Fexa. Vaniver appeared in 15 games and scored the game winner against Slippery Rock early in the 2010 season. Fox and Fexa each saw plenty of action last season, combining for 29 games played with Fexa recording one assist. MIDFIELD One of the team’s strengths during an impressive 2010 season was their midfield and it will again be counted upon to produce in 2011 as the BU midfield returns seven players. Anchoring the Husky midfield will be senior captain Katie Walczuk. A strong player who last season was named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer AllAmerica second team will again be looked upon for her offensive production. She led last year’s team in scoring with 30 points and her 13 goals was third most in the PSAC. Joining Walczuk will be fellow captain Natalie Adams, who a year ago was named to the All-Atlantic Region second team. Adams wrapped up the 2010 season by leading the Huskies in assists with seven, while totaling 11 points. Her play in the midfield will again be a key factor for Blooms-

2011 SEASON PREVIEW burg entering the 2011 season. Lauren Stedman, Kyleigh Reckage, and Caroline Mountney will bring their abilities to the midfield position. All three players saw significant time last season, combining for six points. Junior Rebecca Lieberman and sophomore Taylor Pettis will be back, adding depth to the Huskies midfield.

Huskies. She will look to compete for a larger role on the 2011 squad.

DEFENSE Although players are assigned to roles, this year’s emphasis on defense goes beyond positions. As head coach Huckett explains “every single one of our players is a defender even though they play a different position. We are going to be very solid defensively as a team.”

FRESHMEN There will be seven new members joining the Huskies in 2011. Sierra Fortunato has impressed during her short time at camp this year. Look for her to add speed to the Husky midfield. Nicole Updegrove and Atle Walter will compete for minutes in the back. Both strong defenders who coach Huckett thinks will get better as the season goes on. Danielle Fiorelli is one of three keepers for Bloomsburg. Her efforts during preseason workouts have impressed the coaching staff and she will be challenging for the number one position at goalkeeper.

After limiting teams to 0.86 goals per game last season, the trio of Aimee Bux, Caitlin Raynes, and Kelsey Holtz will again be back to solidify the back line. Bux and Raynes each started in all of BU’s 21 games with Holtz starting 19 of 20 games played. Also returning to the back line will be Lauren Kreglow, Jessy Shober, and Laura Wrona.

“For the incoming freshmen, their biggest thing is to get up to the speed of play and it’s evident that they have put in a lot of work over the summer” Huckett states. “They just need to make that progression to the collegiate level but with every session they are getting quicker and stronger and starting to adapt to the speed.”

GOALIES The Huskies will also have depth at the goalkeeper position as they return two keepers from last season. Back for her final year will be Frances Nicoletti, who last year earned AllAtlantic Region third team honors for her play between the posts. Last season Nicoletti, got the start in all of BU’s 21 games, totaling a 13-5-3 overall record. In addition to earning nine shutouts, she also made 104 saves, the most in the PSAC in 2010.

OVERALL Teamwork is always a necessity for a successful team and for the 2011 Huskies buying into a new philosophy will be a challenge they will need to overcome. “The biggest challenge for a new coach coming in is having your philosophy and your style of play imprinted on the team” said Huckett. He goes on “the attitude of every player within the team has been second to none and the energy within the squad is extremely positive. Everybody involved in Bloomsburg University women’s soccer is extremely excited for the upcoming season.”

Ashley Hart will be back for her second season with the
