About Bloomsburg University Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education. Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.
> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,400, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields.
> Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
> Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. Governance is through the State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors and through the university’s Council of Trustees.
> Cost—About $5,358 per semester for Pennsylvania residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans), $13,396 for non-residents.
> Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,026 per year.
> School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, originally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and gold since the 1920’s. In the early 1930’s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

Season Preview
After a successful 2011 campaign that produced Bloomsburg’s first winning season in nine years, the Bloomsburg University baseball team will hope to build on last year’s accomplishments. Along with a winning record, the Huskies ended a 13 year PSAC playoff drought by claiming the number three seed in the conference tournament.
“Last season we really learned how to win at a high level and compete really hard and we return a lot of guys from last year’s team” notes 2011 PSAC Eastern Coach of the Year Mike Collins. “I expect that we have that same mindset we had in last year’s tournament. With pitching and defense you always have a chance to win and beat anybody on any given day. I’m really excited to get them out there and get them started.” STARTING PITCHING At the beginning of last year Bloomsburg returned a slew of offensive producing players but the pitching staff was a question mark. This season the Huskies return three of their top four starters as well as the addition of several pitchers that can make an impact this season. Senior lefty Vinny Voorhees returns to anchor the Bloomsburg pitching staff in the 2012 season. “He’s logged a lot of innings and has competed at a high level for us and helped us win a lot of games last year” notes Collins. Voorhees returns for his senior year after making 11 appearances, throwing five complete games. He ranks among the program’s top 10 in strikeouts (134), innings pitched (165.2), shutouts (2), complete games (11), and saves (5). In 2011 he set school record for fewest walks in a season after throwing 59 innings with only five bases on balls. Sophomores Kyle Hunter and Casey Cooperman are the other two top returners in the starting rotation. Hunter, the 2011 PSAC East Rookie of the Year, is back after what Coach Collins described as an unbelievable freshman year. He allowed no more than three runs in six regular season conference games and his 3.10 ERA led the Huskies in 2011. Following a solid freshman year and great summer of training, Cooperman is back with the Huskies after racking up a team high six wins. He also shared the team
lead in strikeouts, fanning 43 batters. “These three guys have proven they can win and have had success in our league” said Collins “we are really excited about them and building our staff.” The fourth spot in Bloomsburg’s rotation will go to Bryan Morris. Morris is a transfer from Lackawanna Junior College and has had a good fall throwing the ball. Mike Streisel, a freshman, has continued to develop since arriving with Huskies and is knocking at the door of the weekend rotation. “We are really excited about Mike and what he has done early on” notes Collins “He has looked dynamite and has shown dominance right away and in terms of stuff he has a chance to be really good.” BULLPEN Coach Collins will have several options when it comes to relief pitching this season as the Huskies return key pitchers from last year along with a few new faces. Matt Kline is back for his fifth season and will serve as Bloomsburg’s one inning closer. “His stuff continues to improve” said Collins “he’s throwing in the upper 80’s to 90’s with a really hard breaking ball and we’re excited about him this season.” Also coming out of the bullpen this year for the Huskies will be righties Eric Geedey, Nick Donofry, Gino D’Amato and lefty reliever Dean Kenniff. Look for all four pitchers to be solid contributors this season in relief appearances. Matthew Dean is also back and will play a more significant role this year with his sidearm throwing style. Freshmen Tyler Hill, Shane Wert, and Cody Heane will also be options for coach Collins. Out of the three freshmen, Hill is the lone lefthander, giving BU two lefty arms out of the bullpen. CATCHER 2011 All-PSAC East second team honoree Nickolas Eversole will be back in a starting role behind the plate for the Huskies. Last season he threw out 12 runners, tied for second most in the PSAC. “He is the best overall, all-around catcher in the league when you combine offense and defense” said Collins “Receiving, blocking, throwing, leadership and his offensive ability makes him one of the most valuable guys on our team.” Tim Kurucz will also be catching for the Huskies this

year. Kurucz is a great defensive catcher who has enhanced his offense this season. He will provide Bloomsburg with a solid backup. INFIELD
The Huskies have options at short stop and second base this season with the interchangeability of Aaron Russell, Keith Meyer, and Tim Ravel. Russell was put into the starting lineup during the second half of last season which Coach Collins said really helped the team out defensively. Second team Rawlings/ABCA Gold Glove honoree Jarrod Kramer is back at third base for the Huskies. He started in all 40 games that he participated in last season, making 29 outs, assisting on 76 more, and owned a .938 fielding percentage. “Defensively he’s the best third baseman in the conference because of his ability to take runs away from other teams” said Collins. He continues “So far this season he has looked really good at the plate and we’re going to need him to help us out offensively this year.
limited time last season but is fighting for a larger role this year. Freshman Josh Schroeder is also competing for the starting spot. A very athletic outfielder, Schroeder has a real chance to make the starting lineup. Jordon Schainholz is another outfielder for the Huskies who will most likely see time as a pinch hitter. Schainholz possesses some power at the plate and will be called upon for some late at-bats when Bloomsburg needs some offense. SEASON OUTLOOK The Huskies lost their top two hitters for average and their lead RBI guy to graduation so the offense this year for the Huskies will look fairly new. This season all batters will play an integral role in the offensive approach and success for the Huskies. “We need one-through-nine as an offense working together and playing great offensive baseball” Collins stated. He continues “through running bases, having good at-bats, jacking up our on-base percentage, and situational hitting will offset some of the losses we’ve had.”
Tom Richards is looking like the guy at first base this year. Richards, a freshman, had a rough fall season but with hard work over the holiday break, he is swinging the bat extremely well according to the coaching staff. Also, Nick Mazza and Pete Edgar will be used as utility players for the Huskies in 2012. OUTFIELD Vince Smarrelli, a 2011 All-PSAC second team member, returns to left field for his senior season. Last season he was third on the team in hitting with a batting average of .363, hitting for 10 doubles. Look for him to bat in the middle of the lineup for the Huskies this year. Sophomore Brad Smith will be back in center field for Bloomsburg after a good freshman season. He hit for .336 last season, scored a team second best 32 runs, and recorded 100 putouts, the most by any BU outfielder. Smith has a lot of range defensively and is infamous for robbing opposing batters of doubles. The starting role in right field is up for grabs entering the year with two players battling for time. Corey BACHMAN Assistant Coach • 1st Season Virginia Military Institute ‘07
Corey Bachman will begin his first season as a member of the Bloomsburg University baseball staff in 2011. Bachman was a four-year letter winner at the Virginia Military Institute, and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 40th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball first year player draft. Bachman subsequently played with the Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Wild Things organizations. His 2007 recruiting class at VMI still holds the school records for career and season victories, and solidified the program’s first national ranking (during the 2007 season). Handling the pitching staff, Coach Bachman brings with him a wealth of knowledge. Having pitched in the Valley Baseball and Coastal Plain Leagues during his collegiate days along with playing in nearly every part of the United States under numerous pitching philosophies, Coach Bachman particularly emphasizes the importance of the mental preparation aspects of the game as much as those of physical nature. Bachman received his bachelor’s degree from VMI in May 2007, and is a native of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Elisse, have a Boston terrier named Hoss.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, the league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. The membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.
