About Bloomsburg University Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education. Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.
> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,400, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields.
> Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
> Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. Governance is through the State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors and through the university’s Council of Trustees.
> Cost—About $5,358 per semester for Pennsylvania residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans), $13,396 for non-residents.
> Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,026 per year.
> School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, originally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

Season Preview
Following a 10-7 season that resulted in a PSAC playoff berth, the Bloomsburg University women’s lacrosse team eyes another postseason bid. With the return of Bloomsburg’s top three scorers from a year ago and a pair of All-PSAC goalies, the Huskies have a legitimate opportunity of making their sixth straight PSAC playoff appearance.
Bloomsburg will be under new direction this year as first year head coach Erin Cunnane takes the reigns of the women’s lacrosse program, alongside graduate assistant coach Karli Brentlinger. “Getting everyone on board with what we are thinking and what we ask, I thought would be a challenge but they have stepped up to our expectations,” said Cunnane. She continues, “I got lucky, I inherited a very talented team.” ATTACK On attack, the Huskies return two-time, All-PSAC second team honoree and co-captain Samantha King. King led the Huskies with 33 goals and was second on the team with 37 points, including four assists last season.
Metzler added 19 goals and 11 assists on the season, adding some depth to the attack. Freshmen Julie Falk, Patrice Coleman, and Marissa Moley will help raise both the talent level and add a different dynamic to the front line of the team. “Our trio of upperclassmen in the front has really helped develop the attack and have brought the underclassmen into it,” says Cunnane. MIDFIELD Running the midfield with speed is junior Maggie Canavan. Canavan added 17 points to the Huskies offense last season, including 10 goals and seven assists. Adding midfield experience for the Huskies are the Bossert twins. Aubrey was a key player last year, with 12 goals and 27 draw controls, and Ashley has gained confidence and will play a vital role this year. Natalie Draham will be helping out the midfield this season, after playing in 12 games for the Huskies last season. Incoming freshmen Morgan Sherriff and Grace Malizia add depth to the midfield and will be looking to add some time this season.
Sam Mazzie also returns up top with fellow junior Kelsey Metzler. Mazzie finished the 2011 season as Bloomsburg’s leader with 43 points and 13 assists and was second on the team with 30 goals.

DEFENSE Anchoring the defense this season is senior co-captain Lindsay Kupferschmidt. The defense also welcomes back an experienced junior Amber Shifflet, who is very vocal in the back end.
“Lindsay and Amber work very well together as veteran defenseman. Them working together is going to be huge for our defense,” says Cunnane. Incoming freshmen Carly Ball and Allie Campbell will make an immediate impact on the defensive end, while being able to learn from their leaders and step up. Freshmen Shannon Neligan, Amanda Jaynes, and Danielle Landiorio will add depth to the defense this season. GOALKEEPER In goal, the Huskies welcome back two familiar faces in junior Sara Bates, a 2011 second team All-PSAC selection, while they also have the addition of junior Shelby Iezzi to rely on. With two talented goalies anchoring the defense between the pipes, both will be competing for the starting job.
SCHEDULE Opening up the season against three-time reigning Division II Champions Adelphi will set the tone for the season for the Huskies. Starting off against playing the best team in the Division will be able to help the Huskies aim to play at a high level when playing in their own Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) games. “Our home opener against the Adelphi is going to be tough, but I think we can learn a lot from them. Once we play the best, then the rest will become easier and better than the first game.” OVERALL Cunnane and the Huskies are looking to improve their record from last year, with the experience and talent balancing out the new players coming in, they hope to battle for another PSAC playoff berth. “The most important thing throughout the season is that we stay focused, while maintaining our very positive balanced team environment. Our team has the talent and foundation in order to get where we want to be this season.”

Erin CUNNANE
Head Coach • First Season Indiana University of Pennsylvania ’07
Erin Cunnane was named the head coach of women’s lacrosse at Bloomsburg in September of 2011. She will also begin her second season as the assistant coach of both men’s and women’s swimming this year. Cunnane was a dual sport athlete competing in both swimming and lacrosse at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) graduating magna cum laude in 2007 with a degree in Psychology. She was a PSAC qualifier for four years in the distance Freestyle events and served as team captain her junior and senior years. In lacrosse, Cunnane was a two-year defensive starter and was named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll. After IUP, Cunnane also served as a graduate assistant swim coach at Bethany College in West Virginia from 2007-09, while earning her master’s degree from West Virginia University in Athletic Coaching Education in 2009. She also received a master’s degree in Education (School Counseling) from Bloomsburg University in May of 2011. As the grad assistant at Bloomsburg , Cunnane dealt with the distance swimmers and helped qualify eight of her 10 swimmers for the PSAC championships. All eight swimmers finished in the top 16 with John King finishing third and earning All-Conference honors in the 1000 free.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. The membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.
