About Bloomsburg University Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education. Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.
> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,400, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields.
> Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
> Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. Governance is through the State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors and through the university’s Council of Trustees.
> Cost—About $5,358 per semester for Pennsylvania residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans), $13,396 for non-residents.
> Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,026 per year.
> School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, originally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

Season Preview As she starts her second season leading the Bloomsburg University softball team, head coach Susan Kocher might be more challenged this season then in her first season. Last year, Kocher’s first season after being a long-time assistant for the Huskies, she guided an experienced team led by six seniors who knew exactly how the coach wanted things done both at practice and in game situations. This year all of those seniors have graduated and in their place are a group of talented, but relatively inexperienced players. How those players mix with the returning veterans will determine the success the Huskies will have this season. “We have a lot of talent, but it’s young talent,” said Kocher. “There is a lot of excitement with this group. We are versatile, which adds strength and depth to the team” “We didn’t get to play many games in the fall because of the weather,” said Kocher. But we had a good win over Iona in the Carole Weil Tournament in Allentown,” Kocher said. “It was definitely a stepping stone for the kids as they look to build their own reputation.” PITCHING The Huskies top returning starter is junior Cait Paine. The lefty has a lot of experience as she takes over the role of the “go-to” pitcher. She has worked on adding new pitches and refining the ones she already threw. Overall she has better movement on her ball this season. Behind Paine will be Mandi Black. The sophomore who saw limited time in the circle last year, but has a lot of skill. Black is also very athletic and will also see time in the outfield for the Huskies. The third person on the team who will see time as a pitcher is freshman Caitlin O’Connor who missed the fall season with an injury. O’Connor was a great high school pitcher and will hopefully add some depth later in the season. O’Connor is also a strong hitter and will see time as a designated player. INFIELD The Huskies outstanding versatility will be on display in the infield, with all the players being able to play multiple positions. Last year’s starting first baseman Mandy Leach has been working out at both first and third this season. Leach had improved in 2011 with the bat and will look to be more consistent this season. Defensively, with quick feet, she is solid at either corner position. In the middle infield the Huskies have a couple of very talented players all battling for playing time. Mandi Baer, a starter at second last year as a freshman, is a very skilled player with good bat speed who is also a good bunter. Baer is expected to see time at both second and shortstop this season. Season Preview Another player who will see time at both positions is Chrissy Belko. The sophomore saw limited time a year ago, but has an explosive bat with tremendous power. Her strong arm and good range makes her a strong fielder. A couple of freshmen expected to make impacts this year in the middle infield are Erika Yanora and Kayla McHale. Yanora has a strong arm, plays with maturity and has a big bat. She also runs well and is a strong bunter. McHale, who can also play the outfield, has good fundamentals with good speed and a strong arm. Sophomore Rachel Fredell rounds out the infield for the Huskies. Fredell, who hit .311 in limited action last year, has good power and plays with a lot of composure. She will see time at both first and third. CATCHER Behind the plate the Huskies have senior Sam Pientack. As a junior, Pientack hit nearly .400 with eight homers and 31 RBI. The Huskies expect her to pick up offensively where she left off last year and provide good leadership. Pientack, who will also see time at third base, has a strong arm and works well with the pitchers. When Pientack is not catching, freshman Dallas Ostin will be behind the plate. Ostin brings power as a hitter and is a fundamentally sound catcher. OUTFIELD The Huskies top returning outfielder will be Raychelle Kuhns. The junior, who plays centerfield, is tremendous defensively with a strong arm. Offensively she continues to improve after hitting .268 with three homers and 14 RBI last season. Sophomore Lyndsay Busler will also see time in the outfield this season. As a freshman Busler saw limited time, but did hit two homers and drive in three runs. She has improved offensively, while defensively she has a strong arm and moves well. Another sophomore looking to make an impact this season is Hannah Moir. A year ago Moir saw limited time, but has been working hard to improve both her offense and defense. A freshman looking to get playing time in the outfield is Gabby Baltzley. She brings speed and solid fundamentals to the team. OVERALL Despite the relatively young team, the Huskies expect to once again contend for a PSAC title. “We have the talent to compete for a conference championship,” said Kocher. “It is just a matter of playing together. I wish we had been able to play more in the fall, but I think once we get some experience behind us we will be fine.”

Head Coach • Second Season Bloomsburg ‘87
Susan Kocher begins her second season as head coach of the Huskies after being named the head coach in July of 2010. Kocher replaced the legendary coach Jan Hutchinson who retired at the end of the 2010 season after 33 years of coaching. In Kocher’s first season as head coach she guided the Huskies to a record of 33-9 and a berth in the NCAA playoffs. Kocher spent 23 years as an assistant after playing four years for Hutchinson. Combined she has been part of 1,104 wins as both player and coach. As an assistant coach Kocher was an integral part of the Huskies great success over the last two decades. As the Huskies pitching coach she has coached eight Kocher’s Portfolio players to All-American status, including 2010 secAs A Player ond team All-American Shavaun Fisher, who posted 35 wins, second most all-time for a single season in school history. A two-time All-American herself and three-time AllPSAC selection as a pitcher at Bloomsburg, Kocher is • Only pitcher in school history to throw a perfect game the only pitcher in school history to throw a perfect and a no-hitter on the same day game and a no-hitter on the same day. In addition, she had a career record of 71-13 and boasted an earned run average of 0.47. She struck out 485 batters and threw eight no-hitters for the Huskies, including two perfect games. At the plate, she had a fine career as a hitter, with 71 RBI and 65 runs scored. A 1987 graduate of Bloomsburg University, Kocher was inducted into the Bloomsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. She is a native of Camp Hill, PA and graduated from Cedar Cliff High School where she was an ASA All-American.

Dee Wolfe
Assistant Coach • Second Season Bloomsburg ‘05
In 2012, Wolfe begins her second season as the Huskies assistant coach. She spent five seasons as a volunteer assistant with the team after playing for the Huskies for four seasons. As a player with the Huskies, Wolfe was a three-time All-PSAC selection—including twice as a first team choice—and was also named All-Region once by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She finished her career with seven home runs and 95 runs batted in, the 12th most by any player in school history. Her best season came as a senior in 2005 when she hit .401 with four homers, 42 RBI, and a team-high 20 doubles. As a junior she had a homer and 31 RBI. Head Coach Susan Kocher is also looking forward to working with Wolfe. “Dee brings a wealth of knowledge from her years as both a player and volunteer with our program,” said Kocher. “We are both very excited about working together.”

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, the league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. The membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.
