The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as home for the university’s indoor athletic events. The facility, constructed in 1971, underwent a $13.4 million dollar facelift in 2007-09. Among the renovations to the field house were a new bleacher system for the main gym area, a new scoreboard, a new wrestling room on the lower level of the facility, a new and expanded press box, dedicated locker rooms for each sport, including an expanded football locker room, improved office space and additional storage space. In addition the pool area has been completely renovated with improved lighting, new bleachers, new starting blocks, improved timing system and record board. The project also enhanced both the upper and lower entrances that will showcase the awards the teams have won over the last three decades. The project was completed in August of 2009.

2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

By Scott Eddy, Assistant Sports Information Director

14 times.

The Bloomsburg University men’s basketball team has been a program on the rise, making the postseason three straight years – the longest run for the Huskies since a seven-year stretch from 1995-2001.

This year, he will move to the wing in a more natural spot as a shooting guard.

Bloomsburg finished last season with a 16-12 overall record and a 10-6 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, reaching the conference semifinals. This year, the Huskies bring a mix of five players with starting experience along with an influx of seven new players and two redshirts looking to continue on the foundation laid by last season’s team. “Everybody has new roles to fill, from our seniors who are now in the role of being the main guys to score the ball and lead the team to the new guys who have to learn our system,” head coach John Sanow said. “That takes time. The challenge of bringing everyone together as a team is what we’re working on right now.” The Huskies were selected fourth in the PSAC East Preseason Coaches’ Poll with East Stroudsburg, West Chester and Lock Haven taking the top three spots. Bloomsburg plays an exhibition contest at Division I George Washington on Nov. 8 before officially beginning the season Nov. 14 at Penn State Hazleton. Here’s a look at the 2014-15 roster, beginning with returners: BACKCOURT Senior Jon Riles played most of last season as a starter at the point guard position, starting 23 of the Huskies 28 games. In his first season with the team after transferring from the University of Tampa, Riles averaged 9.2 points, 3.4 assists and 2.9 rebounds while scoring in double figures 6

“We’re looking for him to score more this year and be an extension of the coach on the floor,” Sanow said. “He needs to lead our young guys.” Playing at the three spot is junior Charles Haigler, a twoyear starter for Bloomsburg. Sanow frequently called upon Haigler to guard the opposition’s biggest perimeter threat last year and he showed growth offensively as well, recording 8.7 points along with 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per night. “He did a great job as a defender last year,” Sanow said. “He really excelled at covering our opponent’s best perimeter player.” Christian Mortellite will see his first action in 2014-15 after redshirting last year. Mortellite brings the ability to shoot from the perimeter, finishing his high school career with over 1,600 points. FRONT COURT Senior Alssene Saintilus made a big splash in his first year with the Huskies, averaging 11.9 points and 4.5 rebounds a season ago while serving as the team’s strongest offensive threat at times. A candidate for post-season awards, Saintilus transferred from Chestnut Hill prior to last season. “He’s taken on a leadership role within our program and has done a great job of leading our young players,” Sanow said. “He’s improved his game in all areas; he’s gotten stronger and better in the low post and defensively. He’s very difficult to guard because he creates matchup problems with his speed and athleticism.” Moustapha Noumbissi returns for his fifth season with

the program and is key to the Huskies hopes this season with his 6-9, 250-pound frame inside. Noumbissi flashed glimpses of his capabilities during the season, but injuries limited him to 22 games with 11 starts. “We’re looking to him to help us in the rebounding area,” Sanow stressed. “We need him to rebound on both ends of the floor.” Redshirt junior Wes Lyons also has starting experience with 12 starts a year ago and the Huskies hope he will expand offensively this fall. “We’re looking for him to be much more aggressive on the offensive end,” Sanow said. “He has the ability to pick and pop and hit shots from three-point range.” Joining the equation is redshirt freshman Jameal Tucker who was with the team all of last season and will play at forward after averaging 20 points as a high school player. NEWCOMERS With such a large group of newcomers, the coaching staff has high hopes that they’ve brought in immediate impact players. “We’re looking for the transfers to make a huge impact and

play minutes right away,” Sanow said. “We feel those two guys are capable of meshing well with the guys who were here last year.” Those two players are point guards Anthony McKie, who joins the program after a year at East Stroudsburg, and Ashkan Naderi, who spent the past two years at Penn State Hazleton. McKie will fight for a starting role right away after playing 19 games for last year’s PSAC champions, shooting 56 percent from the 3-point line and is good in the open court with the threat to score. “His experience playing against quality players every day has helped his development. Even though he didn’t play a lot of games, he was able to go against very good players every day in practice,” Sanow said. Naderi averaged 14.3 points, 4.1 assists and 2.8 rebounds last year at Penn State Hazleton and the junior has impressed the coaching staff with a tireless work ethic. “He’s always working on his game,” Sanow said. “He has a lot of leadership qualities. We’re looking for him to make the transition to the Division II level and help us improve in a lot of ways.” 2014-15 Huskies Basketball

The addition of McKie and Naderi allows returners Riles and Haigler to move into more natural positions, giving the Huskies more options this fall. “It’s huge that we brought in two guys who can play the point guard position. It allows us to play more of a transition game offensively,” Sanow said. “We feel we have a quicker team, one that will play more up-tempo.” The contingent of freshmen will also add depth to the roster. Chandler Junk adds depth at point guard while Alex Prislupsky brings a shooter’s touch to the perimeter. Nate Feiertag also will vie for time in the backcourt while Darius Robinson-Wallace will fight for time at forward. Senior Saige Spece joins the active roster after three years as a manager for the team. Freshman Tyriek Steward also joins the program this fall and will redshirt this season. SEASON OUTLOOK The PSAC Eastern Division has been tough top to bottom in recent seasons and this year figures to be no different. “Everyone is looking to catch East Stroudsburg,” Sanow said. “We play them early in the year and that will give us a good test of where we’re at and where we need to improve.” 8

2014-15 Huskies Basketball

Bloomsburg will need to replace its top two scorers from last year – Dontahe Jordan and Lorenzo Christmas, but there’s enough returning that the Huskies believe they can again figure in the equation at the top of the league after finishing third a season ago. “We feel that we have a team that can take on that challenge and is ready to compete for a top spot in the East,” Sanow said. “The guys coming back have played in a lot of tough, big games. They played major minutes for us last year – that core group coming back understands what it takes to play in this league and the challenges that are ahead.” After the season-opening road date at PSU Hazleton, the Huskies debut at Nelson Field House on Nov. 15 vs. Adelphi. PSAC East play begins Nov. 19 with a trip to Cheyney.

John Sanow Head Coach • 9th Season at Bloomsburg Career Record: 91-125, Eight Years Record at BU: Same

John Sanow begins his ninth season as head coach of the men’s basketball program at Bloomsburg in 2014-15. Sanow has helped guide the Huskies to three straight PSAC post-season appearances, the longest streak for the school since an eight-year run from 1995-2002. The Huskies earned the No. 3 seed from the Eastern Division in the 2013-14 PSAC playoffs and picked up a first round victory over Kutztown, ultimately finishing the season at 16-12 overall and 10-6 in conference play. Following the season, senior Dontahe Jordan was named first team AllPSAC East while fellow senior Lorenzo Christmas earned a spot on the second team. Both players finished their careers with over 1,000 points with Christmas owning the school’s all-time record for made 3-pointers and Jordan became one of only five players in BU history to reach both 1,000 points and 700 rebounds. Overall, Sanow has 23 years of experience with previous coaching stops at the University of Vermont along with Division II schools Gannon University and PittJohnstown. He also spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Division I St. Francis of Pennsylvania. Sanow was named PSAC East Coach of the Year in 201112 after leading the Huskies to 19 victories. Sanow led the Huskies to back-to-back PSAC tournament appearances for the programs’ first time in 11 years. In 2011-12, Sanow produced one of the best men’s basketball seasons at Bloomsburg in recent memory. He led the Huskies to a 19-9 record, their best showing in 11 years and a share of the PSAC Eastern crown. The Huskies also made a trip to the PSAC playoffs for the first time in 10 10

seasons and hosted their first home playoff game since the 1998-99 season. Sanow coached the PSAC Eastern Player of the Year in Dontahe Jordan, who also earned NABC All-District First Team honors and Daktronics Atlantic Region second team honors, as well as the PSAC Eastern Defensive Athlete of the Year in Larry Webster. Sanow’s players also reached career milestones in the 2011-12 season. Both Trevon Johnson and Webster scored their 1,000th career points under Sanow’s tutelage. They were the first Bloomsburg players to reach the 1,000 point plateau in five years. In addition, Webster cemented his place among Bloomsburg greats by ending his career as Bloomsburg’s all-time shot blocker with 175 career rejections. In 2010-11 the Huskies narrowly missed out on reaching the PSAC playoffs losing out on the final game of the year. The Huskies seven PSAC Eastern Division wins were the most for the team since the 2000-01 season. Sanow also coached the PSAC Eastern Division Rookie of the Year in Dontahe Jordan. During the season Jordan was named the PSAC East Rookie of the Week seven times. In 2009-10, the Huskies just missed out on the PSAC playoffs after dropping its final game of the season. Among the 12 wins for the Huskies was a 12-point victory over seventh-ranked Kutztown. Bloomsburg also lost several close games suffering four defeats in overtime. In his first season with the Huskies in 2006-07, Sanow guided the Huskies to a mark of 13-14, an improvement of seven wins from the previous season and the first time since 2001-02 that the team reached double figures in wins.

Sanow won his first six games as coach and had the team nationally ranked for the first time in several years. He also closed out the season winning four of the final five games and just missed out on a berth in the PSAC playoffs. Also, the eight wins the Huskies recorded at the Nelson Field House were the most since the team won 10 in 2000-01. In his first five seasons as coach of the Huskies, Sanow has seen 16 of his players earn their degrees from Bloomsburg. A native of Windber, Pa., who is well connected in basketball in the East, Sanow is a 1987 graduate of Indiana (Pa.) University. After transferring from Clarion University in 1984, he led IUP in scoring and was a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team selection in 1986. He also set numerous three-point shooting records for the Indians. At Vermont in 2005-06 he was part of a new coaching staff that led the least-experienced team in the nation in D-I (no seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and seven freshmen) to the America East Championship game for the fourth straight season. The sixth-seeded Catamounts (13-17, 7-9 America East) topped #3 Boston University and #2 Binghamton before falling at top-seeded Albany in the title game. While at St. Francis (Pa.), he was an integral part of the Red Flash winning the 1991 Northeast Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. In 1992 he also was an assistant coach for the Panama Men’s Olympic Team in its attempt to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Barcelona. While at St. Francis he coached Mike Iuzzolino, who went on to the NBA for the Dallas Mavericks.
