2015 SEASON OUTLOOK

squad that finished 28-19 overall.
The Bloomsburg University baseball team isn’t likely to overpower many opponents with flashy strikeout totals or eye-popping home run numbers – and that’s just fine by the Huskies.
Last year’s team did most things well – it finished fifth in the conference in team batting average (.302) and fourth in team ERA (3.14) while walking the second-fewest batters (100). Those numbers, coupled with the amount of returners and talented newcomers has much optimism surrounding the Huskies in preseason – but with the competitive nature of the PSAC East, this year’s group knows that last year’s success means little when action begins in late February.
The Huskies instead employ an attack of commanding the strike zone, playing strong defense and putting pressure on opposing defenses through getting on base and being aggressive on the base paths. It’s a style that took Bloomsburg to the top of the conference standings last year as the Huskies remained in the hunt for a PSAC East title until the final week of the season after going 20-8 in the division with the most PSAC victories in school history. Bloomsburg ultimately finished second in the PSAC East and returned to the conference postseason with the third-most wins by any Huskies team.
“The guys understand that in our league you can go from first to fifth in one year,” Collins said. “It happens all the time. They’re mindful of what they’re capable of, but they know how hard they have to work to get back to where we were last year.”
“We call it winning the ‘Free 90’s War,’” head coach Mike Collins said. “We aren’t going to give up bases, we are going to attack the strike zone, make teams put it in play and we will catch the ball in the field. We need to get on-base and compete harder for every single pitch. That’s how we practice. “College baseball is about momentum. We want to grab the momentum and hold onto it for the entire series. Our style of play supports that.”
STARTING PITCHING One area where the Huskies will have to make replacements is in the starting rotation, which lost three key components from a year ago. Most notably, Bloomsburg will have to replace first team All-PSAC East and all-region selection Casey Cooperman who went 6-5 with a 1.67 ERA and nine complete games a season ago. As the team’s workhorse ace, Cooperman finished his Huskies career among the school leaders in nearly every pitching statistic. Also lost to graduation was four-year starter Kyle Hunter.
The best news for the Huskies is that the majority of the faces in the lineup this spring are familiar ones as the team returns seven players from last year’s regular nine as well as several pitchers who logged key innings for last year’s
“We have to replace a lot of big innings,” Collins said. “Some guys are going to have to play bigger roles. Our fourth starter is going to have to step up into the spotlight.” The Huskies seem to be well set at the top of the rotation

Here’s a look at the Huskies as the 2015 season begins:
2015 SEASON OUTLOOK with the return of senior Tyler Hill and redshirt sophomore Ryuta Amaike likely taking the ball on Fridays in conference play. A second team All-PSAC East pick last year, Hill made the transition from the bullpen to the rotation and finished with a 6-3 record and a 3.18 ERA including a team-high 51 strikeouts in 56.2 innings of work while holding opponents to a .255 batting average against. Amaike impressed in his Huskies debut last spring, posting a 2-1 record with a 2.92 ERA including a pair of complete games. “Tyler is very deceptive with his low arm angle and Ryuta has a sharp breaking ball and is a hard thrower. They have two different body styles and arm angles – they’re a pretty good one-two punch,” Collins said. “I love going into a series with veteran guys who have won; the rest of the guys kind of feed off that. We feel good about the pitching staff. We are a little younger, but those guys are talented and have progressed really well.” Among the pitchers looking to take a spot in the rotation is Sean McCloskey. The junior right-hander has filled a variety of roles in the past two seasons, but recorded a 2-2 record with a 2.18 ERA in 20.2 innings as opponents hit just .222 against him last year. The fourth spot will be decided through preseason work and the team’s opening trips south. Senior Jared Schaffer made five appearances last year while freshmen Zachary Meyer and Mike Warren are also in the mix. BULLPEN The key to the Huskies ‘pen is again senior Cody Heane, who was called upon to lock down games last season as one of the top relievers in the region. He went 4-1 with a 2.60 ERA in a team-high 16 appearances last spring, also compiling four saves. His flexibility gives Collins the option of using him at nearly any time – perhaps even as a starter at some point during the year. “He has been critical to our success and will pitch our most important innings. If we need big outs we are going to put the ball in Cody’s hands,” Collins said. Junior Alex Carpenter gives the team another veteran arm in the bullpen, but the rest of the ‘pen is mostly newcomers. Freshmen Brandon Birkhead, Zach Newmeyer, Nate Reigner and Mike Vranesich along with two-way player
Shane Woelfel will all fight for spots in the early season. INFIELD Where the pitching staff has jobs available, the lineup is full of familiar faces – but that doesn’t mean all the jobs are spoken for. With the number of capable players, even veterans will be fighting each other for spots in the everyday lineup. “This is the deepest infield I’ve ever had here. We have five, six guys who we feel can be big players in the league,” Collins emphasized. “We may shuffle things around a bit more than normal because we have such depth and need to get guys at-bats. We have the luxury of having everyone back and added a couple of guys who can help us.” The familiar double play combination up the middle of senior Tim Ravel at shortstop and junior Brian Almand at second base is back. Ravel finished 2014 by hitting .285 with 23 RBI and boasts a career .293 batting average, ranking seventh in career stolen bases with 42. Almand, the 2013 PSAC East Freshman of the year, came alive at the plate down the stretch to finish with a .297 batting average and .395 on-base percentage a year ago. “Tim epitomizes how we play, aggressive offensively and has the dirtiest uniform on the field. We fight hard for every pitch and that’s how Tim plays,” Collins assessed. Senior Eric Frain proved to be a vital addition to the team after transferring in prior to last season, immediately taking the reins as the Huskies everyday leadoff man and third baseman. He finished the year as first team All-PSAC and also earned all-region accolades after hitting .367 with 14 stolen bases, 21 RBI and 38 runs scored. His 65 hits ranked third in the PSAC and were fifth-most in Huskies single season history. “He is really comfortable in the leadoff role and puts a lot of pressure on the defense,” Collins said. Junior Joey Casselberry has spent the past two seasons as the starter at first base, owning a .305 career batting average in 90 starts. Collins was impressed with Casselberry’s ability to drive the ball during the fall season, and has hopes that he can again fill a middle of the lineup role this season. The coaching staff also has high hopes for transfer Ryan Kirman who played third base at Brookdale Community College last season, batting .424 in 139 at-bats. Kirman’s ability to play around the diamond will give Collins many options with his lineup card. 2015 Huskies Baseball

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK Senior Pete Edgar will again play a utility role with the ability to play nearly any spot on the field as well as serve as a valuable pinch runner. Junior James Ott adds depth at first base and newcomer Tyler Benson will give Collins a valuable left-handed bat off the bench. OUTFIELD Bloomsburg graduated two fixtures from its outfield in center fielder Brad Smith and right fielder Nick Mazza following last season, leaving two big holes to fill. Given the Huskies style of play as well as the way their home Danny Litwhiler Field plays with its tricky angles and wind, outfield defense is especially important to Bloomsburg. Sophomore Brady West was the team’s starter in left last year, playing solid defense while catching fire at the plate over the last month of the season. He finished the year with an even .300 batting average after hitting .442 over the season’s final 15 games. West could remain in left, but brings the ability to play anywhere in the outfield. A pair of talented newcomers could fill the shoes of Smith in center – Woelfel was the North Jersey Player of the Year as a high school senior and could be the starting center fielder depending on how much time he spends on the mound. Redshirt freshman Austin Edgette came to the team as a left-handed pitcher before transitioning to the outfield because of his great speed and range. Also in the mix for playing time is redshirt freshman Cy Treaster as well as Preston Bare, a transfer from Longwood University who brings the team power potential. Redshirt freshman Derek Whitfield also brings power from the left side. “We pitch to contact so we need three guys who can track it down in the outfield,” Collins said. “We feel we have a number of guys who have good range and can help out our pitching staff.” CATCHER Bloomsburg is also stocked behind the plate, returning junior Corey Baiada and the reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Year Damin Muth along with talented freshman Brandyn Smith. A former college catcher, the work of Collins along with assistant coach and former Huskies backstop Nick Eversole is apparent in the team’s strong play behind 8
2015 Huskies Baseball
the plate. Bloomsburg ranked among the PSAC’s leaders in throwing out attempted base stealers last year and surrendered just seven passed balls, third-fewest in the league. Bloomsburg catchers threw out 22 attempted base stealers – second only to Pitt-Johnstown (23). Only Millersville (43) and West Chester (43) turned more double plays than Bloomsburg’s 40, another sign of the work of the Huskies backstops. “We are always near the top of the league in double plays and a lot of that comes back to our catchers being able to keep the double play in order,” Collins added. “We do a very good job in bunt and first-and-third situations and a lot of that is due to the work of our catchers. We put emphasis on the little things and it has paid off.” Baiada had a down year at the plate last year, but hit .291 with 26 RBI as a freshman in 2013. Muth exploded on the scene in his debut, often serving as the team’s designated hitter while finishing among the PSAC’s leaders in batting average (.392), RBI (29), on-base (.500) and slugging (.515) while hitting .510 with runners in scoring position. Smith also shows the potential to further Bloomsburg’s tradition of strong play behind the plate. OUTLOOK With more question marks in the pitching staff than at this time a year ago, the team may rely a bit more on its offense in the early going – and that’s something the Huskies feel they can do, given the number of returners and depth. “There might be some days where we need to rely on the offense a bit more,” Collins said. “The pieces are in place, it is just about finding the right guys on a given day to give us the best chance to win lineup-wise.” A strong start to the year could go a long way – Bloomsburg scored multiple big early season conference wins in 2014 and rode that momentum into May. “We won a lot of games on Friday against the other team’s top pitchers. We found out that if we played to our strengths we will be tough,” Collins added. “Pitching-wise if we attack the strike zone and make routine plays, we can be tough to beat.” The Huskies open the 2015 campaign at the Builder Invitational in Newport News, Va. on Feb. 26.

COACHING STAFF
Mike Collins
Head Coach • 10th Season at Bloomsburg
Mike Collins will enter his 10th season as the Huskies head baseball coach in 2015. During his time at the helm of the Huskies, Collins has guided 31 All-PSAC East selections and four All-Region selections. Bloomsburg has narrowly missed reaching the PSAC playoffs in five of those seasons, and in 2011, the Huskies earned their first tournament berth since 1997. The Huskies again reached the conference tournament in 2014 with a record-setting season. Collins earned PSAC East Coach of the Year honors for the second time following the 2014 season after leading the Huskies to a 28-19 record including a 20-8 mark in the PSAC East, the most conference wins in school history. The 28 victories were also third-most in Bloomsburg history. The Huskies had four all-conference selections as well with Casey Cooperman and Eric Frain named to the All-PSAC East first team while Tyler Hill and Damin Muth earned spots on the second team with Muth also being named PSAC East Freshman of the Year. Both Cooperman and Frain also achieved All-Region honors. The Huskies finished the year with a .302 team batting average while posting a staff ERA of 3.16. The 2013 squad started slowly before winning 17 of its last 21 contests, including a nine-game winning streak that matched the second longest in school history. The strong finish gave Bloomsburg at least 20 wins for the third consecutive year. Middle infielder Brian Almand was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year and earned a place on the all-conference second team. The team scored 30 runs on the final day of the season to break a 52 year old record fro runs in a game. The team’s 28-run margin of victory was also a school record, as were its totals of 29 hits and 28 RBIs. In 2012, the Huskies missed the PSAC playoffs by a half-game, edged out of the four spot by Millersville. However, Bloomsburg’s 25 wins was the most since 1999 and their 12-12 mark in the PSAC East snapped a 14 year streak of below .500 conference records. Bloomsburg posted a 25-20 record, their second straight winning season and Collins led the Huskies to a number six regional ranking on April 25. Collins also coached six Huskies to All-PSAC East honors, including two first team selections in seniors Vince Smarrelli and Vinny Voorhees. His 13 total All-PSAC selections during 2011 and 2012 were more than any other school in the division. He also placed two players on All-Region teams for the second consecutive season in 2012. 10
2015 Huskies Baseball
Bloomsburg finished third in the Eastern Division in 2011 with a record of 11-13, earning its first postseason appearance in 13 years. The Huskies trailed the league for much of the season but were powered a late-season run, including wins in six of the final eight division games. Bloomsburg went 2-2 in the PSAC tournament, earning the program’s first postseason wins since advancing to the D-II National Championship round in 1995. Among the team’s wins in 2011 were victories over nationallyranked Millersville and regionally-ranked East Stroudsburg, Kutztown and Mansfield. Collins also led Kyle Hunter to PSAC East Freshman of the Year honors, marking the team’s first major award winner in Collins’ tenure. Collins also oversaw the renovation of Danny Litwhiler Field that included new dugouts, brick backstop, new elevated seating behind home plate and installation of a warning track as well as walkways. In addition, Collins directs the Huskies baseball camp programs. The Huskies offer three weeks of summer camp as well as seven clinics throughout the academic year. Collins came to Bloomsburg after spending four seasons as the top assistant at the Binghamton University. A former Division I player, Collins was instrumental in the recruiting process for Binghamton, and played a prominent role in the success of the Bearcats program, helping the team to a berth in the America East playoffs in just their fourth season of Division One competition. He also held a successful Crack of the Bat summer and winter camps for youngsters in the Greater Binghamton area. Collins previously served as head coach at Keystone College, compiling a 90-75 overall mark for the junior college in La Plume, Pa. His 2001 team won a school-record 18 consecutive games en route to a 28-12 record and runner-up finish in Region 19. In 2000 and 2001, Collins-coached teams earned pre-season national rankings, and he produced 11 all-region and two All-America players during his tenure at Keystone. Collins played Division I baseball at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in politics in 1996. He was a two-time team captain and four-year letterwinner. He resides in Riverside, Pa., with his wife Angie, his sons Graham and Landon, and his dogs Duke and Finnegan.
COACHING STAFF
Josh Epstein
Graduate Assistant Coach 2nd Season at Bloomsburg
Josh Epstein enters his second season as a graduate assistant at Bloomsburg University where he serves as the Huskies pitching coach. Prior to joining the Bloomsburg coaching staff, Epstein served as the pitching coach for Ramapo College of New Jersey for three seasons. Along with pitching responsibilities, Epstein coordinated Ramapo’s recruiting efforts for four seasons. In total he spent six full years on the Ramapo coaching staff. The Huskies went 28-19 in 2014 including a school-record 20-8 record in the PSAC East. Much of the team’s success was due to its strong pitching as the Huskies ranked among the leaders in the PSAC throughout the season, finishing the year with a 3.16 team ERA while handing out only 100 walks in 347.1 innings of work. The Bloomsburg pitching staff also only surrendered four home runs to opponents during the year, the fewest among all conference teams. Starters Casey Cooperman and Tyler Hill were both named All-PSAC following the season with Cooperman becoming the first player in Bloomsburg program history to be named First Team Daktronics All-Atlantic Region after finishing the year with a 1.67 ERA and nine complete games in 12 starts. Cooperman was also named All-Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) as well as Rawlings/ American Baseball Coaches Association. During his tenure at Ramapo, Epstein oversaw a pitching staff that set numerous school records and led the Roadrunners to compete on a national level. The team won 95 games in three seasons (95-45-1 overall record), made the New Jersey Athletic Tournament three times and competed in three NCAA Regional Tournaments. The work Epstein put in on the recruiting trail showed up not only in team accomplishments, but in individual recognition as well. Overall 15 Roadrunners earned spots on All NJAC teams, 22 earned spots on All NJCBA teams including the 2012 and 2013 Players of the Year; four players earned spots on the ABCA All Region Team, and one player earned Division 3 All-American Honors. Along with those awards, PJ Cerreto became the first Ramapo College Roadrunner to be selected in the Major League Baseball Draft since 2004, and the first RCNJ pitcher to be drafted since 1982. In Epstein’s first season as pitching coach, the Roadrunners went 30-14 and compiled a 3.44 team ERA – down from 5.76 the previous season – good for 4th in the NJAC. The team earned a spot in the NJAC Tournament, and a berth in the NCAA New York Regional Tournament – the college’s first trip since 1988. The pitching staff was led by a pair of talented sophomores who earned post- season awards – Travis Zilg (2nd team NJAC, 2nd team NJCBA, 6-3 2.93 ERA) and PJ Cerreto (3rd team NJCBA, 6-2, 2.15 ERA). Ramapo built off the previous season’s success in 2012, as the team went 35-15, qualifying for the NJAC Tournament – finishing as runner’s up, and the NCAA Mid Atlantic Regional Tournament – finishing as runner’s up as well. The Roadrunners again finished 4th in the NJAC in ERA, posting a 3.63. Zilg (NJAC Honorable Mention, NJCBA 3rd Team, 7-3, 2.66 ERA) and Cerreto (NJAC 2nd Team, NJCBA 1st Team, 7-2, 2.77 ERA) once again led the staff. In Epstein’s final season with the Roadrunners, Ramapo posted a 30-16-1 overall record, again earning trips to both the NJAC and NCAA Mid Atlantic Regional Tournaments. The team again finished as the NJAC runner’s up. The Roadrunner’s posted a 3.24 team ERA, good for 2nd in the conference. Zilg was the lone Roadrunner pitcher to garner any post-season awards, earning NJCBA 2nd Team for his efforts (6-2, 2.11 ERA). Epstein spent the summer of 2013 coaching the pitchers of Sag Harbor Whalers in the Hampton’s Collegiate Baseball League. The Whalers won the league’s regular season championship, led the league in ERA, and were led by Jonathan Mulford (Pitcher of the Year) and Jacob Bodner (set the league record in saves). COACHING STAFF
Nick Eversole
Volunteer Assistant Coach 2nd Season at Bloomsburg
Nick Eversole will begin his second season as a member of the Bloomsburg University coaching staff in 2015. Eversole coached his first season in 2014 after playing for the Huskies from 2010-2013 as a catcher and first baseman. He assists head coach Mike Collins with the offense, on and off-campus recruiting, and is the catching coach for the Huskies. Eversole was a three-year starter for the Huskies behind the plate and at first base during his four years in maroon and gold. He finished his playing career with over 100 career hits, seven home runs and threw out over 25 percent of base stealers. He was an AllPSAC selection in 2011 while being named team captain and team Most Valuable Player in 2013. The Huskies won 28 games during the 2014 season, third-most in the program’s history and most since 1999, while also winning a school record 20 conference games. The Huskies offense hit .302 for the season and .310 in conference play. Of the 16 PSAC teams, the Huskies offense ranked in the top half of nearly every offensive category including: runs, hits, doubles, runs batted in, total bases, hit by pitch, stolen bases, batting average and on-base percentage. The Bloomsburg catching staff was one of only four teams in the PSAC to throw out at least 25 percent of base stealers during the 2014 campaign as they caught 39 percent to rank second in the conference during the season including 40 percent during conference play, a figure that led the PSAC. The Huskies had five all-conference selections in 2014 including catcher/designated hitter and PSAC East Freshman of the Year Damin Muth.
