2015 SEASON OUTLOOK

The Bloomsburg University women’s lacrosse team’s talented senior Class of 2015 began their Huskies careers three years ago by winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship. That year’s squad was transitioning under a new head coach, just as this year’s group is under first-year coach Shannon Hertz. “The seniors have had two coaching changes, so they’re good with going with the flow of everything,” Hertz says. “When they were freshmen they won the PSAC Championship, so they have that taste for it. When I came in and asked their goals, every single senior put that goal down of getting back there. They’ve won before; they know what it takes.” Hertz also knows what it takes to win in the PSAC – she served as a team captain at Lock Haven, earning first team All-Conference accolades for the Lady Eagles. She later coached at her alma mater, helping Lock Haven to back-to-back conference championships as an assistant, earning 2009 IWLCA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year honors. “I knew what I was getting into with this conference, I know how much of a challenge it can be,” she emphasized. “It’s all about putting in the work and taking care of the little things and eventually we will get where we need to be.” Despite changes on the sidelines, the Huskies have had a tradition of making the postseason, earning a berth in the PSAC Tournament in each of the past eight years including last season when a young squad with nearly a dozen freshmen finished 9-8 overall and 7-5 in PSAC play. Sparked by a talented group of seniors and that large group of now sophomores, the Huskies have high hopes for the new season. 6

ATTACK The Huskies attack again will be fueled by senior allconference performer Julie Falk. Falk, who was the 2012 PSAC Tournament MVP, has a chance to re-write the conference record books this season. One year removed from scoring 50 goals with 24 assists for a total of 74 points, Falk enters the spring within striking distance of the Huskies all-time records for goals, assists and points. Fellow senior Marisa Moley also ranks tied for eighth in career assists with 46 after finishing the 2014 season with career highs in goals (33), assists (28) and points (61). Sophomore Brigid Kyne made an outstanding collegiate debut last year, receiving second team All-PSAC honors after scoring 38 goals with 13 assists for a total of 51 points and will again be key to Bloomsburg’s attack. Kyne along with Falk will likely be the two players taking draws this season for BU. Another senior, Patrice Coleman has seen time in 50 games including 16 starts a year ago when she scored 10 goals and had 18 points, giving the Huskies even more veteran experience on the attack. Sophomore Nikki Fisher and freshman Tracy Rusen will also figure into the attack. MIDFIELD Senior Morgan Sherriff will be in the midfield as well as attack this year after starting all 17 games with 11 goals and six assists along with eight draw controls and 12 caused turnovers as a junior. In all, she’s seen time in 51 games as a three-year starter in Maroon and Gold. Three other members of the stellar Class of 2015 will also bring veteran presences to the midfield. Carly Ball will transition with time on defense and in midfield. A twotime All-PSAC selection, Ball has played 54 games for the Huskies, scoring eight goals and causing 16 turnovers last spring. Patrice Coleman, meanwhile, started every game she played last year and enters the season with 30

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK career goals. Three-year starter Allison Campbell also will be a key part of the midfield and defense after starting 16 games last year with 16 caused turnovers and 29 ground ball pickups. Sophomore Kellen Cannon played in eight games with one start in her Huskies debut and will battle for time in the midfield along with freshman Taylor Turner who will be a big part of the midfield and attack. DEFENSE Ball will again play a role on defense along with fellow senior Shannon Neligan, who played in 16 games with 13 starts last year. A large group of sophomores will play roles on the Huskies defense – Kate Shea, Amy Loftus, Ashley Nelson, Julia Stauffer, Andie Turner and converted goalkeeper Christine Seitzinger all saw action in their debut seasons last spring. “We just have one junior on the roster, so our sophomores need to become leaders sooner rather than later,” Hertz said.

all the time – everything we do in practices, we try to simulate it being a game situation to keep that intensity up to get used to it.” The Huskies expect to again be in the top half of what is traditionally a very strong conference – six PSAC teams, Bloomsburg included, were ranked in the 2015 NCAA Division II IWLCA Preseason Top 20. “If we all work harder off the ball in our transition and keep possession we will be in a good place,” Hertz said. “On the attack we can’t force. We have the skill to put the ball in the back of the net, but sometimes we force things that aren’t there. “Defensively, we need to take calculated chances. I’m really excited to see what we can do this year. We will have our battles, but if we take care of the little things we will have a successful season.” Bloomsburg opens the 2015 season at home vs. Lake Erie on March 4.

That one junior is transfer Stephanie Hostrander who previously played at Corning Community College after a standout high school career in the lacrosse hot bed of central New York State. Freshman Emily Dwyer also joins the team and hopes to battle back from an injury suffered in high school to see minutes this spring. GOALKEEPERS Hertz expects the Huskies to have strength in the cage this spring as a pair of young players will serve as Bloomsburg’s last line of defense. Sophomore Abbey Burnett returns after starting all 17 games last year, compiling a 9.56 goals against average while making 122 saves. She is joined by freshman Brittney Hegarty who will fight for playing time. “Both players are very competitive, and it’s good that they have each other to push to make each other better throughout the year,” Hertz said. OUTLOOK One change the Huskies look to make in 2015 is adding more consistency. Not altogether surprising from a team with such a large group of freshmen last year, Bloomsburg went through more ups and downs than Hertz hopes to see this spring. “Our main goal is trying to stay intense all the time,” she said. “This team often played really well in big games, but had some letdowns in games we should have performed better in. We’re working on having the intensity we need 2015 Huskies Lacrosse
