2015 SEASON PREVIEW For more than three decades, a trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs has been a spring tradition for the Bloomsburg University softball team. For many younger members of last year’s team, though, the playoff setting was a new one, and the Huskies finished the season after going 1-2 in regionals with a win over Winston-Salem State, but setbacks against West Chester and California (PA) to end the year. That taste of the postseason left a more veteran group of Huskies hungry to return and take the next step. “I think the playoff experience was eye-opening for all of the younger players last year,” head coach Susan Kocher said. “The first time you get there, some nerves are present. Now as sophomores coming back, they know what to expect and are excited to try to get back there.” Though the Huskies graduated five seniors from last year’s team that finished 28-19 overall, much of the core of that squad returns with added experience this spring. PITCHERS Bloomsburg will not lack for depth in the circle this season as the Huskies did not lose any of their staff that posted a 2.23 team ERA last spring. “We have the entire pitching staff back, and we’ve also added to the staff,” Kocher said. Senior Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) is back for her second season in Maroon and Gold after transferring from Millersville a year ago. She immediately made an impact, posting an 8-3 record with a 2.54 ERA and seven complete games in 88.1 innings of work, bringing stability and experience to the circle. Two sophomores who made instant splashes as freshmen are also back. Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run), the 2014 PSAC East Freshman of the Year, went 14-10 over 26 appearances and 23 starts with a team-high 154.2 innings of work and a sparkling 1.99 ERA and 117 strikeouts last year. She also tallied 22 complete games and five shutouts, limiting opposing batters to a .250 batting average against. Fellow sophomore Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) worked her way into a larger role as the 2014 season went on, coming on strong late in the campaign. She finished with a 5-4 record in 12 appearances, including five complete games and a team-best 1.88 ERA. Most teams would be happy to bring back a formidable trio, but the Huskies have the added luxury of adding three potentially strong arms to the equation as well. Senior Caitlin O’Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) has not been able to pitch since 2013 due to injury, when she went 7-1 with a 0.95 ERA in 44.1 innings and held hitters to a .187 batting average against her. O’Connor has worked her way back from injury, however, and will be available this spring after a strong fall and promising preseason.

The Huskies also welcome a promising transfer, sophomore Sarah Bortner (Glenville/South Western) who spent her freshman season at Penn State Mont Alto where she struck out 289 batters in 167.0 innings of work over 29 appearances with a 14-6 record and a 1.38 ERA. “Having three sophomores is a wonderful thing to have now and for the future,” Kocher said. “It’s something we’ve never had before, three pitchers like that in one class. They got a lot of experience last year and will be better for it this year.” Another newcomer, freshman Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top/ Crestwood) from Crestwood High School could also see time in the circle. INFIELD Depth will give Kocher many options in the infield, where the Huskies may try out a variety of combinations, especially in the early portion of the season. Bloomsburg will get the chance to travel south to Florida for the first time in a number of years with several strong opponents including two nationally ranked foes – No. 21 University of Indianapolis and No. 22 Winona State. “It’s kind of refreshing going to Florida which allows us to mix it up a little bit more and get kids experience and a chance to show what they can do,” she said. A three-way battle for playing time at first base will be on-going as the Huskies will need to replace the graduated Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) who started 46 games last year. O’Connor, Tomaschik and junior Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) will all fight for playing time at first, all possessing the ability to add power to the lineup. Bloomsburg will also have a new face – or faces – at second base, where the team has to fill the void left by the graduation of fouryear starter Mandi Baer (Douglassville/ Daniel Boone) who started 47 games a year ago with a stel-
2015 SEASON PREVIEW lar .972 fielding percentage. Junior Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) brings quickness and great range up the middle with the ability to play second and shortstop. Bertoni has also worked at second through the fall and spring after playing second base through high school. The senior was the team’s top hitter last year, batting .381 with six home runs and 23 RBI with a .629 slugging and .449 on-base percentage. Also in the mix at second base is freshman Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) from Cooperstown, N.Y. Senior Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) and Parker will feature prominently at shortstop. Yanora was a second team all-conference pick last year after hitting .351 with four home runs and 26 RBI along with a .390 on-base percentage. Parker can also play short when not pitching, bringing a solid bat as well after hitting .315 with four home runs and 23 RBI last spring. Bortner also has the ability to play shortstop, hitting .337 with a .422 on-base percentage at Penn State Mont Alto last year. Bloomsburg also adds Abbey Remley (Berwick/Berwick Area), a freshman from nearby Berwick Area High School. Another battle will come at third base where sophomore Holly Peacock (Williamsport/Jersey Shore) brings strong defensive skills and an improved bat over last year. Also vying for time is fellow sophomore Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill/Upper Darby) who has impressed the coaching staff and is a good on-the-field communicator. Newcomer Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) looks solid at third base and shortstop with her power potential and strong arm.
where we are,” Kocher said. “We feel we have talent, they just need the game experience in some cases.” Bloomsburg opens the 2015 season with six games in Florida March 8-11 and then travels north to Salem, Va., for five games as part of the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament. Bloomsburg debuts at home on March 20 vs. Shippensburg in the PSAC East opener. Joining her will be a combination of new faces. Junior Erica Keen (Gordonville/Bishop Shanahan) has seen time in 36 games in Maroon and Gold and appears ready to step into a larger role this season. A pair of freshmen – Emily Mayhew (Perkasie/Pennridge) and Bridget Casey (Perkasie/Pennridge) – have a ton of experience playing together at Pennridge High School as well as summer league teams. Freshmen Erin Smith (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock Area) from Tunkhannock Area High School and Lindsay Nemeth (Drums/ Marian Catholic) from Marian Catholic High School in Drums, who also plays second base, will fight for time as well in the Huskies outfield.
OUTFIELD Where Bloomsburg has perhaps the most changes is the outfield as the Huskies will need to replace graduated seniors Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) and first team All-PSAC East and AllAtlantic Region pick Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge). “We have a couple of holes to fill, but we feel we have even more range and speed in the outfield than we have in the past,” Kocher said. Senior Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern), a second team allconference selection in 2014, heads up the outfield. A three-year starter, McHale not only brings strong defensive ability but a .376 career batting average to the lineup. CATCHER Another spot where the Huskies are strong is behind the plate where Rehm and sophomore Anna McElroy (Jessup/Valley View) will see time. McElroy stepped into the starting job as a freshman, playing in 32 games. She impressed the coaching staff with her defensive ability as well as working with the pitching staff and has improved at the plate over the past year. Rehm has started 65 games with the Huskies, but missed much of last season due to injury and is back healthy this spring. Rehm slugged two home runs with 13 RBI during her freshman season in 2013. “By the time we get to Virginia, hopefully we will know more about

Susan Kocher Head Coach • 5th Season at Bloomsburg
Susan Kocher will begin her fifth season as head coach of the Huskies in 2015 after being named the head coach in July of 2010. Kocher replaced the legendary coach Jan Hutchinson who retired at the end of the 2010 season after 33 years of coaching. In Kocher’s first three seasons as head coach, she guided the Huskies to 100 wins and three NCAA playoff berths. In 2013 the Huskies won 32 games and qualified for both the PSAC and NCAA playoffs. Pitcher Cait Paine was named the PSAC Central Division Pitcher of the Year for the second straight year, while three others were named AllConference. In addition three players were named to the NFCA All-Region team. The 2012 season produced a runner-up finish in the PSAC Championships and a sixth seed in the Atlantic Two regional bracket of the NCAA Championships. Kocher coached five players to All-PSAC Central honors including the Central Division’s player, pitcher and freshman of the year; it was the first time since 2007 that a team in any of the PSAC divisions claimed all three major awards. She also coached three All-Region selections and a first team NFCA All-American in Sam Pientack. Three of Kocher’s athletes set school records during the 2012 season. Pientack broke the school’s 12 year-old homerun record as she hit 20 long balls. Cait Paine fanned 18 batters in a single game two times, tying a 17 year-old school record; her 18 strikeouts also tied the PSAC record. Chrissy Belko tied a 10 year-old school record for single game homers with three. Kocher spent 23 years as an assistant after playing four years for Hutchinson. Combined she has been part of 1,104 wins as both player and coach. As an assistant coach Kocher was an integral part of the Huskies great success over the last two decades. As head coach and as the Huskies pitching coach she has coached 10 players to 12 All-American selections, including 2010 second team All-American Shavaun Fisher, who posted 35 wins, second most all-time for a single season in school history. In addition, under Kocher’s watch 32 no-hitters, six of them perfect games, were tossed while she served as the pitching coach. A two-time All-American herself and three-time All-PSAC selection as a pitcher at Bloomsburg, Kocher is the only pitcher in school history to throw a perfect game and a no-hitter on the same day. In addition, she had a career record of 71-13 and boasted an earned run average of 0.47. She struck out 485 batters and threw nine no-hitters for the Huskies, including two perfect games. At the plate, she had a fine career as a hitter, with 71 RBI and 65 runs scored. A 1987 graduate of Bloomsburg University, Kocher was inducted into the Bloomsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. She is a native of Camp Hill, PA and graduated from Cedar Cliff High School where she was an ASA All-American.
