MyCore — General Education

Living & Learning Communities Internships Study Abroad

BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

Welcome to the Bloomsburg University community.

Let me congratulate you on your (or your child’s) decision to attend Bloomsburg University! This is a perfect time to begin making some important choices for the first year of college and think about additional opportunities for future years. This year incoming freshmen will experience a new general education program, My Core, which enables students to earn points toward general education goals through a broad variety or classroom and outof-classroom experiences. I also encourage all new freshmen to consider joining a Living and Learning Community. It is a great way to jump-start your career at Bloomsburg University. Please browse this information as well as visit our website at www.bloomu.edu/LLC to learn more about this “life changing” opportunity and to sign up. Finally, take some time to consider and plan for additional experiences later in your college career, such as study abroad and internships. Best Wishes, Dr. Jonathan M. Lincoln Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education

MyCore My Core is distinctive, outcomes-based, student-centered general education program that emphasizes the connectedness of disciplines, knowledge and skills. The program enables students to achieve general education outcomes outside the traditional classroom and across university divisions. The new program is in effect for Summer 2012 freshmen, ACT 101 freshmen and new Fall 2012 freshmen. My Core adopts a goal-focused point system, independent of the academic credit system, which allows any course or co-curricular activity to contribute to one or more general education outcomes. A history course with extensive writing may not only contribute to a student knowledge of the humanities but also to his or her ability to communicate. A community service or leadership training program operated by the Student Affairs division could be counted towards the student goal of exhibiting good citizenship.

BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

Living & Learning Communities In a Living & Learning Community, students who share common interests live together in a residence hall, participate in trips and activities, and take a cluster of general education courses, all under the direction of a faculty member. Students and faculty develop close relationships in and out of the classroom that lead to greater academic success, a broader view of education, livelier and more integrated university experiences and a great sense of commitment. There are 12 Living & Learning Communities available in 2012. n College of Business
