Renowned for their powerful stage presence and high-energy style, Philadelphia’s Koresh Dance Company has been hailed as an extraordinary company on the national stage. Founded in 1991 by Israeli born choreographer and Artistic Director Ronen Koresh, this troupe presents its audiences with an exciting and emotional blend of dance styles, ballet, modern and jazz, molded into choreography that is both eloquent and explosive. Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot is the outrageous musical comedy lovingly ripped off from the film classic Monty Python and The Holy Grail. The National Broadway Tour is based upon the work of award winning team Mike Nichols (Tony for directing), Eric Idle (book), and collaborators Idle and John Du Prez (Grammy for music and lyrics). It’s the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows, killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen, and show-stopping musical numbers are just a few of the reasons audiences everywhere are eating up Spamalot.

Grammy winner Luciana Souza is a leading singer and interpreter of today’s jazz scene. She began her recording career at age three with a radio commercial and went on to record more than 200 jingles and soundtracks, becoming a first-call studio veteran by age sixteen. Her academic pedigree includes a BA in jazz composition from Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where she also spent four years on the faculty; an MA in jazz studies from the New England Conservatory of Music; and a fouryear teaching stint at the Manhattan School of Music, New York City. Her singing has been called “transcendental, perfect, and of unparalleled beauty.” Her longstanding collaboration with Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo has earned accolades across the globe.
Bloomsburg Players theatre productions are generally recommended for adult audiences. All Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday performances are at 3 p.m. Adult tickets are $6; seniors and non-BU students are $4. BU students and CGA cardholders are free. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts Box Office, located in the lobby of Haas Center for the Arts, or at the door days of performance. DALA members Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine make use of their lush vocal harmonies and considerable talents on guitar and piano to create a uniquely insightful brand of acoustic pop/folk music. Touring tirelessly, the duo has built their following the old-fashioned way, by singing for everyone who would listen and turning listeners into fans. “We go to some emotional places in our music ... humor serves as a relief from that,” Walther says, speaking about the duo’s on stage banter. “The more spontaneous the dialogue…the better the performance,” adds Carabine. Girls From the North Country, a live CD/DVD released in 2010, won Canadian Folk Music Award Vocal Group of the Year as well as a JUNO nomination, and was broadcast by PBS outlets throughout North America. The unmistakable voice of triple Grammy Award winner Kathy Mattea explores music’s most basic human essence through timeless melodies and uplifting narratives. Kathy has gathered songs and stories of bravery, pride and grief that describe and define the life and times of her home place. COAL, her 2008 Grammy nominated CD, was her first step in discovering this vast and rich vein of music which took her into the lore of family stories. Her newest CD Calling Me Home released this year is a journey further through the rich tapestry of Appalachian music. Whether performing in a small acoustic band or in front of a symphony, she connects intimately with her audience. Increasingly in demand as a public speaker, Kathy Mattea regularly presents keynote and educational programs at colleges, civic venues and conferences across the country. She will present the keynote address at Bloomsburg University’s annual Health Sciences Symposium Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 7:30 p.m., Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. Her address “The Healing Power of Music” discusses the effects of music on Alzheimer’s patients. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Drawing from elements as opposite as the flowing lines of Chinese calligraphy and the thundering motion of the martial arts, Nai-Ni Chen is one of the very few established Asian-American choreographers who meld the dynamic freedom of American modern dance to the stoic discipline of the Chinese classical arts. Performing live on-stage with the Ahn Trio, in Temptation of the Muses the dance company and the trio are in perfect collusion, with the dancers performing their movements to the music, among the instruments and the players. The show’s centerpiece, entitled “Concrete Stream,” was created by contemporary composer Kenji Bunch. Born in Korea and educated at the Julliard School, the Ahn’s have built a distinguished reputation reflecting the two cultures they grew up in, embracing the music of living composers, forming unique collaborations, and bringing new energy and excitement to the genre of chamber music.
