CHEYNEY 20 - MILLERSVILLE 17: October 2, 2010 (Courtesy of Cheyney Sports Information) Cheyney snapped a 32 game losing streak and a 24 game PSAC East conference losing streak with a 20-17 win at Millersville. Third year head coach Jeff Braxton earned his first collegiate coaching victory. “The victory was a true blessing. The guys played hard and the staff did an excellent job. I’m proud of everyone,” stated Braxton. The Wolves ground game produced a season high 295 yards--160 of them by Marcus Jones. John Newman added 87 yards on six carries including a 77-yard touchdown run. Cheyney was able to hold the ball for almost 39 minutes. Millersville jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but Cheyney’s Tyler Wilkinson converted his first field goal of the season hitting from 22 yards to cut the lead to 7-3. The Marauders Jamal Smith extended the lead when he caught a Bill Shirk 13 yard pass early in the second quarter. Cheyney would respond with score on a 77 yard off tackle run by John Newman with 1:28 in the half. Cheyney found themselves down 14-10 at intermission. After a scoreless third quarter the Wolves were the first to put points on the board in the fourth quarter. The foot of Wilkinson was true again as the sophomore converted from 37 yards to cut the Millersville lead to one. Millersville’s Anthony Kassab answered with a 28 yard field goal with 2:05 remaining to extend the lead back to four points. After the ensuing kick-off the Wolves found themselves on their own 30 yard line with 1:58 to play. Anderson would complete a 28 yard pass to Prince Stewart. However, after two incomplete passes and a short gain the Wolves found themselves with fourth and long. The Wolves would then be the beneficiaries of a pass interference call that kept the drive alive. Anderson would then complete a 17 yard pass to Dominic Crowell to put the Wolves on the Millersville 18 yard line. A nine yard completion to Travis Taltoan sandwiched in between a pair of incomplete passes put the Wolves in another fourth down predicament. Marcus Jones rushed for one yard to give the Wolves first and goal. On the next play the Marauders were once again whistled for pass interference putting the ball on the two yard line. Anderson called his own number for the go ahead score with 30 seconds remaining in the game, and Cheyney held on for the victory.

LAST MEETING #4 Bloomsburg 28, Cheyney 6 October 17, 2009 BLOOMSBURG-- Derrick Price rushed for three touchdowns to lead the No. 4 Bloomsburg University Huskies to a 28-6 win over Cheyney University in the Huskies’ annual homecoming game on Saturday. Bloomsburg scored on its first possession of the game after forcing a fumble on the Wolves opening drive. Taking over on their own 43-yard line, the Huskies moved 57 yards in nine plays with Price scoring from four yards out for a 7-0 Bloomsburg lead with 4:32 left in the first. The Wolves answered on the ensuing drive, moving to the Huskies 18 yard line before settling for a 35-yard field goal from Tyler Wilkinson and cutting the lead to 7-3. On the kickoff following the Cheyney field goal, the Huskies’ Branden Wright had a 45-yard return giving Bloomsburg the ball at the Cheyney 34-yard line. Five plays later, Price scored from one yard out for a 14-3 lead. Cheyney then put together a 17-play, 78 yard drive that ate up 9:44 on the clock, but stalled at the Bloomsburg four-yard line. Wilkinson connected on 22-yard field goal with 1:36 to go before half, cutting the deficit to 14-6. In the third period, the Bloomsburg defense set up the Huskies third score when Alphonso Nathan recovered a fumble at the Wolves 40-yard line. A 38-yard pass from quarterback Dan Latorre to tight end Ben Weaber brought the ball to the Cheyney twoyard line before Price capped the short drive with a two-yard run. Bloomsburg’s final score came on an 11yard pass from Latorre to Jordan Weisman with 5:47 to go in the third period for a 28-6 advantage. Latorre finished 8-10 for 110 yards and one touchdown, while Thomas McFarland made 10 tackles to lead the defense. Ron Hunter carried 22 times for 121 yards for the Wolves. Cheyney Bloomsburg

Bloomsburg University Football Game Notes

PSAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Franklyn Quiteh earned his second straight and his third East Division honors in five weeks after rushing for at least 200 yards for the second straight week and for the third time this year. Quiteh equalled the top singlegame performance in Division II this year by rushing for a career-high 246 yards on 39 carries (6.3 ypc). He had more yards in total offense (246) than East Stroudsburg as a team (209). Quiteh shared last week’s award with Cheyney’s Marcus Jones, who rushed for 160 yards on 23 carries (6.2 ypc) without being stopped for a loss to help Cheyney to its historic 20-17 win over Millersville. LEADING THE NATION: For the third week this season, Franklyn Quiteh, rests atop the Division II rushing leaderboard. His average of 183.6 yards per game is 30 yards more than current runner-up Joe Glendening of Hillsdale (153.2). Irv Sigler and Jamar Brittingham. Across all divisions, Quiteh is the second best rusher in NCAA football trailing only Dion Wilson of D-III institution Millikin University (200.5). IT’S GOOD!: Bloomsburg kicker Daniel Fisher booted his way into the BU record book with his school-record four field goals last weekend. Fisher surpassed the old mark of three set numerous time, most recently by Garrett Bloom against, coincidentally, East Stroudsburg in 2005.

FROM THE ARCHIVES By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger With 319 rushing yards against East Stroudsburg, the Huskies have reached at least 300 yards rushing for two consecutive games, the first time they’ve accomplished that feat since the first three games of 2008 versus Ashland, California and Mercyhurst. It marked the fourth time since 2001 BU has rushed for 300 or more yards versus the Warriors, all occurring in victories. The four field goals Dan Fisher kicked are the most ever in a single game for a Bloomsburg kicker, breaking the old mark of three set on a number of occasions, including nine times in the past 25 years: by Mark Weiss and Garrett Bloom three times each, and Chris Mingrone, Bill Beall and Tom Boop one time each. Fisher’s nine field goals thus far this year are already tied for the second-most ever in a single season, with Weiss in 1989 and Jon Koenig in 2009. Mingrone set the mark of 10 in 1986. Bloomsburg’s all-time record versus Cheyney is 40-9-1 in 50 games since the series began in 1960, with a mark of 20-5 at home and 20-4-1 away. The Huskies have beaten the Wolves 20 consecutive times, which is an all-time school record against a single opponent. The Huskies have not lost at Cheyney in 13 games dating back to 1982. Danny Hale has a perfect mark against the Wolves in 22 games as a PSAC coach, including 5-0 while at West Chester and 17-0 at Bloomsburg. Cheyney’s victory at Millersville last week broke a 32-game losing streak for its first win since 2007. It was the first time the team had beaten the Marauders since a 21-20 win in 1983, and was only the fifth PSAC victory for the program since 1990. The only other wins were versus Kutztown in 1993, Mansfield in 1998 and 2006, and Lock Haven in 2007. Prior to last Saturday’s game, Cheyney’s last PSAC road win was 21 years ago on October 14, 1989 at Bloomsburg, the last time the Huskies lost to the Wolves. Cheyney has not won back-to-back PSAC games since they defeated Kutztown the week after that 1989 win over Bloomsburg.

CHASING HISTORY: This chart shows the game-by-game rushing totals for Franklyn Quiteh compared to those of the best seasons of Bloomsburg’s three all-time leading rushers. Through five games, Quiteh’s total (918) surpasses Glaze (574) and Brittingham (893) but trails Sigler (1,169) at the same point in their historical seasons.

Last Week BLOOMSBURG 26 - EAST STROUDSBURG 13 October 2, 2010 BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University’s Franklyn Quiteh racked up 246 yards on 39 carries to lead the Huskies to a 26-13 victory over East Stroudsburg University in a PSAC Eastern Division matchup at Redman Stadium. The ESU Warriors, led by senior quarterback Matt Marshall, elected to begin the game with the ball and came out looking strong. Marshall got off to a quick start, completing a 58-yard pass to tailback Joe Klebon on his first throwing attempt. Kicker Taylor Groff concluded the drive with a 41-yard field goal, putting East Stroudsburg on the board first, 3-0. Quarterback Pat Carey struggled on the day, throwing a pick to ESU’s Herschel Thornton with his first attempt. The Husky defense responded to the challenge, forcing the Warriors back four yards on a three-and-out drive, returning the ball back to Bloomsburg. In what was the day’s only sign of troubles for the redshirt freshman, Quiteh was stuffed inches from a touchdown and lost the ball to ESU’s Kevin Schafer on the one-yard line. From there, the Huskies’ defense dominated, keeping the Warriors pinned against their own goal line for three plays. Despite advantageous field position, Bloomsburg was unable to capitalize, as kicker Daniel Fisher failed to connect on a 42-yard field goal try to end the first period. On Bloomsburg’s first possession of the second quarter, Fisher redeemed himself by booting a 26-yard try to equalize the score at 3-3. With less than two minutes to play in the half, Quiteh broke loose for a 42-yard run, his longest of the day. Two plays later, Carey connected with BU sophomore Kyle Fisher for a 32-yard touchdown pass, putting Bloomsburg on top, 10-3. On the first play of the ensuing possession, ESU’s Marshall threw an interception to BU junior Vince Browning. Looking to capitalize on the turnover, Carey went to the air but completed to his second Warrior of the day, as ESU’s David Castillo came down with the pick, and the Huskies led by a touchdown at halftime. The Huskies went to the air again after the break, but one play into the half, Carey was picked for a third time, falling victim to the hands of Zechariah Runkle, who returned the throw 26 yards The Bloomsburg defense was impenetrable again, and ESU settled for a 33-yard field goal to narrow the BU lead to 10-6. Bloomsburg responded with a 10-play, 68-yard drive highlighted by a 21-yard boot by D. Fisher, making it a 13-6 game. East Stroudsburg’s woes continued as receiver Eric Deery fumbled on ESU’s 15-yard line, allowing Bloomsburg captain Alex Landis to recover for the Huskies. BU extended its lead with a 30-yard field goal from D. Fisher, pulling away 16-6. Later, a pair of pass-interference calls and another 42-yard breakout by Quiteh put Bloomsburg close enough for Carey to complete a three-yard touchdown toss to senior Cory Stiger, breaking open the game at 23-6. The Warriors’ mistakes continued in the fourth quarter, when a BU punt was muffed allowing sophomore Dan Haverstock to recover for the Huskies. Daniel Fisher soon connected on his school-record fourth field goal of the game from 41 yards, giving the Maroon and Gold 16 unanswered points. East Stroudsburg partially redressed its previous mistakes by assembling its longest drive of the day, going 60 yards over eight plays to score off a Marshall pass to senior Jeff Giglio with nine seconds to play. The Warriors’ on-side kick failed, and time expired with Bloomsburg doubling-up its opponent, 26-13. Quiteh’s season-high 246 yards comprised more than three quarters of BU’s total offense. With 918 yards over five games, his average of 183.6 yards/game is expected to keep the reigning national rushing leader atop the Division II rankings. Carey completed only six of 21 attempts, throwing three picks but managing to connect for two touchdowns. ESU’s Marshall was successful on 20 of 35 attempts, racking up 209 yards while tossing one touchdown and one interception. Defensively, BU’s Marcus Zimmerman had a team-high seven tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and half a sack.
