Season Preview 16 National Championships
94 First Team All-Americans
Season Preview
When the Bloomsburg University field hockey team takes to the field for the start of the 2010 season, there will be a new face on the sidelines for the first time since the late 1970’s. Nikki Rhoads, a three-time All-American for the Huskies, takes over for longtime head coach Jan Hutchinson who retired and went out winning the team’s 16th national title in school history.
then qualify for the NCAA playoffs.” While some new coaches take over programs that require a major overhaul, Rhoads is fortunate that the Huskies never really go into a rebuilding mode. Despite losing a pair of All-Americans in Chelsea Due and Maggey Bloskey and second team All-American goalkeeper Caitlin Koczynski, there is plenty of firepower returning in addition to a strong recruiting class and some key transfers.
Rhoads, the former Nikki Hartranft, takes the reins of arguably the most successful field hockey program in the history of the sport. With over 600 wins as a program and those 16 national titles, the Huskies are in a class of their own.
ATTACK Offensively the Huskies, who have scored more than 100 goals in three straight seasons, lost four of their top five scorers to graduation. The one returning player is first team All-American Amanda Riley who is back for her junior season after leading Division II in both points (62) and goals scored (27). Joining Riley on the attack will be senior veterans Ashley Miller and Aime Sgarlat in addition to junior Lindsay Danz. Other returning forwards for Bloomsburg include sophomores Alexis Weber, Sandy Anceravage, and Lauren McGinley. Weber scored seven goals and Anceravage six as freshmen. The offense will also be helped by sophomore transfer Jenna DiSabatino, who comes to Bloomsburg from Wilkes University, where she was named first team All-Freedom Conference as well as the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Rookie of the Year. DiSabatino scored 18 goals and had 14 assists for the Lady Colonels last season.
Even considering the historical success of the program, the pressure is not overwhelming for Rhoads. “I am honored to be back at Bloomsburg,” said Rhoads. “I am not trying to fill the shoes of Jan (Hutchinson). I only want to build on the tradition and success she brought to the program. I see this as an opportunity to continue something great. Jan developed a lot of quality studentathletes and I want to do the same.” With the excitement comes the experience of stepping onto the field as the head coach at your alma mater. “I am excited to get practice started,” said Rhoads, who spent two seasons as the head coach at Alvernia University. “It will be great to get on the field and begin the work needed to reach our goals. Of course those goals are the same as when I was a student-athlete here. That is take one game at a time, make the PSAC playoffs and

MIDFIELD Despite losing some key players in the midfield, including Due who was the PSAC East Player of the Year, the Huskies return a group of players with plenty of game experience. Senior Amanda Deloy, a first team All-PSAC East selection, will lead the midfield play after starting every game last season. She will be joined by fellow senior Julia Rush and sophomores Rachel Zerfoss and Amber Aulenbach. Transfer Cassie DiSabatino, twin sister of Jenna, will also play a key role in the midfield. At Wilkes, Cassie DiSabatino was named first team All-Freedom Conference and to the Division III All-Rookie team by womensfieldhockey.com. She scored five goals and assisted on 10 others for the Lady Colonels.
Rhea Mitchell, a standout player from Danville, who has been a four-year Futures participant, will also look for playing time. OVERALL “There is going to be a level of the unknown for everyone involved,” said Rhoads. “From the seniors down to the freshmen there is a clean slate. No one has an advantage here. There will also be a transition period for us as everyone needs to get used to playing with each other. I am confident that we will continue to field a strong team for this 2010 fall season.” “The PSAC as usual will be tough,” Rhoads added. “Kutztown is always tough as is East Stroudsburg. Plus we play at Shippensburg and have road games at Stonehill and Franklin Pierce from the Northeast 10. This is also an NCAA Sports Festival season (with the final four in Louisville, KY) and that is an exciting goal for the team to strive for.”
DEFENSE A year ago, the Huskies allowed just 19 goals in 23 games. This season, the Huskies return several key members of that defense led by senior Madison Schoch and junior Betsy Renn. Renn was named second team All-PSAC East last year and started all 23 games for Bloomsburg. Joining that pair will be junior Rebecca Sherman. In goal, there will be a battle between sophomore Megan Hollenbach and incoming freshman Megan Eppley. FRESHMEN A total of 16 freshmen will battle it out for spots on the 2010 roster. Among some of the top incoming players are Brittany Mathews, who scored 38 goals at Oxford Area High School and assisted on 51 others. She was both the Mountain League and Tri-Valley League Most Valuable player as a senior. In addition,

EASTON, MA-Sophomore Amanda Riley scored two goals to lead Bloomsburg University to a 3-2 win over UMass-Lowell (UML) in the 2009 NCAA Division II Field Hockey National Championship game. The title was the fourth straight for the Huskies, the second time they have accomplished the feat, with the first four-peat stretching from 199699. The championship also marked Bloomsburg’s 16th overall and seventh in the last eight seasons and the second straight over UML.
UML would get a chance to go up by a score when Sammy Macy would try a shot at the 13:12 mark but was turned away with a nice save by senior Cailtin Koczynski. The Huskies would work their way down the field and take a one-goal lead when junior Ashley Miller dumped a pass down to freshman Alexis Weber from the top of the arc where she would tip it in past the River Hawks goalkeeper Amy Carbon at the 17:16 mark in the first half. It was Weber’s seventh goal of the season and Miller’s fourth assist.
The Huskies (22-1) were able to get on the board first at the 4:38 mark of the first half when Riley, the nation’s leading scorer, knocked in a shot from five yards out. The shot came off of a deflected pass right in front of the net and was her 26th goal of the season.
Bloomsburg would try to add to their lead 10 minutes later, but a shot by senior Breanne Tobin would sail wide left of the net. UML would get their last good look at the net in the first half when a shot by Moulton off of a penalty corner was saved again by Koczynski.
“Coming out, the players seemed really loose but intense,” head coach Jan Hutchinson said of her team. “After that quick opening goal, we kind of breathed a sigh of relief but knew we had to stay focused and keep up the intensity.”
Defense would continue to dominate the game in the second half, as neither team was able to get a good look at the net until over 15 minutes in. The Huskies would look to extend their lead when junior Amanda Deloy took a shot off of a penalty corner but was turned away when the ball was blocked by the tight River Hawks defense. UML would get its own good look at the cage less than two minutes later with a penalty corner. This time it was the Bloomsburg defense that would step up as Day’s shot was deflected away from the net, preserving the 2-1 lead.
UML would get a chance to tie the score at one less than two minutes later. Off of a penalty corner, a shot by the River Hawks Liz Day was deflected by senior Aubrey Carman but Jaci Moulton was able to get the rebound and tip in a goal to knot the score at 1-1 6:01 into the first half. Shots were difficult to come by, as both teams turned up the heat on defense and didn’t allow any good looks at the net throughout most of the contest.
The Huskies would work the ball down inside the arc seven minutes later but saw good shot by Miller saved by Carbon. Continuing their strong work on defense, the Huskies would regain control of the ball with junior Julia Rush breaking away from the

pack from the top of the arc. She would drop it off to Riley, who found the back of the net for the second time in the game, putting the Huskies up 3-1 with just over five minutes to play in the game. It was Riley’s 27th goal and Rush’s third assist of the season. The River Hawks would fight back, however, scoring off of a penalty corner from Moulton to Macy to bring UML back within one goal with 4:36 left to play. They continued to turn on the heat, attempting to even the score by pulling their goalie with two minutes remaining. The extra attacker would prove to be futile as the Huskies defense would turn away all attempts at a good look at the net. “We took a timeout right after they scored and the players were really fired up and determined not to let this slip away,” said Hutchinson. “They pulled their goalie and added an extra attacker and that’s when we really turned it up a notch. These players were not going to lose this game.” The championship also brings a successful era to an end as this was Hutchinson’s last game on the Bloomsburg sideline, announcing her retirement a few weeks ago. She goes out on top, however, with 16 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) titles and 16 national championships. “I’m excited and very happy that it ended this way,” said Hutchinson. “But I’m mostly happy for the seniors, because they’ll leave here with four championships. This season was a story book ending, and for these kids to come back and win it all...it’s incredible.”

with 32 players earning 53 All-American awards. OVERALL Hutchinson’s achievements in coaching have not gone unnoticed by her peers. She has been honored with induction into both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Halls of Fame. In addition, Hutchinson was named the winner of the C. Vivian Stringer Award by the United States Sports Academy in the summer of 2006. Hutchinson’s coaching talents have not only helped those as student-athletes, but several of her former players have gone on to coach at the intercollegiate level. At Bloomsburg, she has former All-American performers as her top assistant coaches in softball. Others have gone on to coaching jobs elsewhere, such as Janelle Breneman (assistant softball coach at the University of North Carolina), Marci Hickey (head softball coach at the University of Vermont), Leah Conte (former assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Mary Washington College) and Kathy Frick (former head coach at Goucher College, Bloomsburg and current head coach of Lafayette University lacrosse.) Two former softball players have also played professionally. Janelle Breneman was a member of the Georgia Pride and Marty Laudato was a member of the Tampa Bay Fire Stix. In 1999, Laudato was named WPSL Hitter of the Year. A 1971 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Hutchinson also earned a master’s degree in education from the school in 1979. Prior to Bloomsburg, she initiated the women’s physical education program at Blair Academy and served as head coach for field hockey, basketball and softball. She has also been inducted into the Newton High School and Sussex County (NJ) Halls of Fame. In 2000, the Bloomsburg softball field was named in her honor.
