2011 Season Preview

16 National Championships

96 First Team All-Americans

2011 Season Preview

Following a season in which BU totaled 19 wins, claimed their 17th PSAC title, and a trip to the NCAA Semifinals the Huskies will look to refocus for another deep run in the postseason.

after a season in which she totaled 60 points on 22 goals and 16 assists. Her 2.73 points per game was fourth best in the nation last season.

In her second season at the helm of the field hockey program, head coach Nikki Rhoads will look to build on the success her team achieved last season. “You could talk strategy and tactics all day long; the two biggest things that win games are leadership and teamwork” states Rhoads. She continues, “When everyone’s on the same page you’re going to have success here.”

Along with Riley will be All-PSAC East second team honoree Lauren McGinley. McGinley finished her sophomore campaign with 27 points, second most on the team, on 12 goals and three assists. Joining her will be classmate Jenna DiSabatino, who in her first year with the Huskies tallied 10 goals and three assists. Alexis Weber, Lindsay Danz, Nicole Bruce, and Brittany Mathews will also be back this season. Weber and Danz each had 12 points last season while Bruce and Mathews each scored five goals and registered an assist. Sandy Anceravage will also be in the mix up top for the Huskies.

Returning 16 players from last year’s squad, the 2011 Huskies will have no shortage of experience or leadership. As Rhoads goes on to explain “Getting that one year under our belt, going from a transition year to starting the new year will be key; Last year there were so many questions, so much hesitation. This year there is no question, there is no hesitation. They are just ready to play.”

MIDFIELD This year the Huskies will have a new look at midfield after graduating two starters from last year, one being second team AllAmerican Julia Rush. A familiar face that will be back however will be All-PSAC East second team selection Amber Aulenbach. Returning for her junior season, Aulenbach will anchor the BU midfield from the center-mid position. “She’s a year older, more mature, and ready to take on that leadership role” states Rhoads.

ATTACK Last season the Huskies ranked third in the nation in scoring average, goals per game, and points per game. As coach Rhoads simply states “Our attacking zone is strong but it will be key to get the job done within our circle.” Returning seven of their eight top scorers from a year ago should keep that attacking zone strong as they are led by 2010 PSAC East Athlete of the Year and first team All-American selection Amanda Riley. Riley, a captain on this year’s squad, will again be a focal point in the Husky attack

Although the starting midfield unit will be new, the Huskies do return four middies from last year’s team, all who saw significant

playing time. Cassie DiSabatino is back for her junior year after playing in 21 games for the Huskies and scoring two goals. Kate Bruce and Samantha Facciolla will also be returning; both competed in 11 plus games during the 2010 season.

mediately for the Huskies this season. Along with the freshmen, Bloomsburg welcomes two transfers to preseason. Brooke Simonovich comes to BU after spending two seasons at Division I Delaware University. As a Blue Hen Simonovich played in 24 games and during her sophomore season scored two goals, one of which came as a game-winner against Saint Joseph’s University.

DEFENSE Last year the Huskies ranked third in the nation in goals against average and will look to continue their defensive efforts in 2011 as they are led by senior captain and first team All-American Betsy Renn. Last season Renn started in all of Bloomsburg’s 22 games while scoring two goals and assisting on three more. Joining her will be fellow senior back Rebecca Sherman, who tallied an assist last season. Sherman brings with her a great deal experience, playing in 50 career games for the Huskies.

Joining her this season will be Jacklyn Beasley, a transfer from Division I American University. During her one year stint with the Eagles she played in five games and tallied one assist. Look for both players to be major contributors in the fall. OVERALL With a good mix of experience and youth, the 2011 Huskies will have their eyes set on one opponent at a time. “All-in-all we are deep and have a great freshman class coming through” said Rhoads. “It’s always one game at a time. The biggest thing for us is to compete in our PSAC division, that’s our first goal. Then get to conference playoffs and then the opportunity to get to the final four.”

BU returns two goalies from a year ago and welcomes several others to preseason. Megan Hollenbach will be back for her junior campaign. Last season Hollenbach appeared in 22 games, making 21 starts and 60 saves while racking up 19 wins. Her goals against average (1.11) ranked third best in Division II last fall. Megan Eppley also returns in goal for the Huskies after seeing action in six games last season. Look for Eppley to push for a bigger role on this year’s team.

Bloomsburg opens 2011 by hitting the road to take on the Panthers of Adelphi University. Game-time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Motamed Field in Garden City, NY. The Huskies will then play their season opener on Sept. 3, at 12 p.m. against Stonehill College at Sports Stadium.

NEWCOMERS There are five new freshmen this year along with two transfers. Among some of the top incoming freshmen will be Felicia Domenici, Candice Smith and Kelsey Tobais. All three players come from great high school programs and should make an impact im-

OVERALL Hutchinson’s achievements in coaching have not gone unnoticed by her peers. She has been honored with induction into both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Halls of Fame. In addition, Hutchinson was named the winner of the C. Vivian Stringer Award by the United States Sports Academy in the summer of 2006. Hutchinson’s coaching talents have not only helped those as student-athletes, but several of her former players have gone on to coach at the intercollegiate level. At Bloomsburg, she has former All-American performers as her top assistant coaches in softball. Others have gone on to coaching jobs elsewhere, such as Janelle Breneman (assistant softball coach at the University of North Carolina), Marci Hickey (head softball coach at the University of Vermont), Leah Conte (former assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Mary Washington College) and Kathy Frick (former head coach at Goucher College, Bloomsburg and current head coach of Lafayette University lacrosse.) Two former softball players have also played professionally. Janelle Breneman was a member of the Georgia Pride and Marty Laudato was a member of the Tampa Bay Fire Stix. In 1999, Laudato was named WPSL Hitter of the Year. A 1971 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Hutchinson also earned a master’s degree in education from the school in 1979. Prior to Bloomsburg, she initiated the women’s physical education program at Blair Academy and served as head coach for field hockey, basketball and softball. She has also been inducted into the Newton High School and Sussex County (NJ) Halls of Fame. In 2000, the Bloomsburg softball field was named in her honor.
