MATCH UP: In the second week of PSAC crossover games, Bloomsburg faces the Crimson Hawks of Clarion University. The last time the teams met was in 2007, when the Huskies won in a 41-35 shootout. IUP leads the all-time series 18-8 in a rivalry dating to before 1933; Bloomsburg has a current winning streak of three games.

THE HEAD COACHES: Huskies coach Danny Hale (West Chester ‘68) is in his 18th year at the helm of the Bloomsburg program. With the Huskies, he has a 145-50-1 (.742) record and has the most wins in school history. For his career, Hale is 185-63-1 and his winning percentage of .745 is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in Division II and top 20 D-II coaches all-time. Hale has led BU to six playoff appearances, including the latest in 2008. He has been honored as the PSAC East Coach of the Year 10 times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine times, and was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year following the 2000 season.

Currently in his fifth year as Indiana’s head coach, Lou Tepper (Rutgers ‘67) has a 32-13 (.711) record with the Crimson Hawks and is also ranked among the top 10 active D-II coaches in winning percentage. Tepper is a native of Keystone, Pa., growing up less than 25 miles from Indiana. He spent over three decades coaching at the Division I level, including at the University of Illinois from 1991 to 1996. Tepper also served as head coach at PSAC-rival Edinboro from 2000 to 2005.

Bloomsburg University Football Game Notes SCOUTING IUP: (Courtesy Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) IUP had its first losing season since 1982 last year, and after going through some growing pains with a freshman quarterback in Pat Smith when starter Andrew Krewatch was lost for the season with an injury, looks to have the personnel for a bounceback season.

The Crimson Hawks also struggled with injuries in addition to the one to their starting quarterback and this year will return several of those that missed significant portions of last year with injuries.

Smith is the leader heading into camp to start at QB but he will be challenged by junior college transfer Bo Napoleon. IUP will have the most returning offensive starters in the PSAC with nine. Particularly strong should be their offensive line, a veteran group that returns four starters, including guard Jim O’Rourke, a two-time All-PSAC West selection who missed last year with an injury.

The running game was IUP’s strength last year and figures to be the same this year, so much in fact that Tobias Robinson, IUP’s leading rusher the last two years and the PSAC’s leading rusher two seasons ago, is being moved to cornerback this year.

Sophomore Harvie Tuck, who averaged 5.3 yards per carry last year in seven games, and redshirt freshman James Johnson figure to be 1-2 on the depth chart while Darryl Herod is a solid fullback.

The passing game struggled last year but with Smith a year older and the team’s top four receivers back, including seniors Javon Rowan and Mychal Skinner, the Crimson Hawks will look to bring their offense back to the levels of 2008 and before when it was one of the best in the PSAC. The injuries hit the IUP defense particularly hard last year, but two starters who missed the bulk of the 2009 season return this year in defensive end Josh Bolyard and free safety Andre Henderson. Despite having so many injuries last year, the IUP defense finished in the upper half of the PSAC in most defensive categories and with six starters back, there is optimism that the Crimson Hawks can return to their dominance of two years ago when they led the PSAC in scoring and overall defense.

In addition to Bolyard on the defensive line, defensive tackle Carl Thornton returns after being named to the All-PSAC West second team as a freshman. The secondary is also experienced, particularly up the middle, as in addition to Henderson, junior strong safety Mark Jackson also returns. With both starting corners from last year having departed, including fourth round NFL draft pick Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, former running back Robinson will shift to corner this year, giving IUP another tall and athletic player at that position.

3 LAST MEETING Bloomsburg 41, IUP 35 November 10, 2007 BLOOMSBURG—Quarterback Dan Latorre’s 26-yard touchdown run with 1:36 to play lifted Bloomsburg over Indiana, 41-35 in PSAC action. During the game, BU tailback Jamar Brittingham became the all-time leading rusher in PSAC history, surpassing Wesley Cates of California.

Latorre’s scramble for a touchdown capped a wild fourth period which saw the Crimson Hawks (8-2) rally from a 27-14 deficit to go in front 35-27 with 7:56 to play in the game before the Huskies put together a rally of its own.

Bloomsburg also got a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown from Jesse Cooper with 4:53 to go in the game that pulled the Huskies within 35-33.

Bloomsburg then forced IUP to a three and out and took over. Latorre hit Brahin Bilal for 23-yards and then went to Bilal again for 27-yards. After a short gain by Brittingham, Latorre scrambled up the middle and went into the end zone for the go-ahead score. The Huskies made it 41-35 with a two-point pass from Latorre to Kyle Ream.

IUP had their final chance with 1:36 still to play and got a great kickoff return from Akwwasi Owusu-Ansah to the Bloomsburg 34 yards line. Krewatch worked the ball down to the Huskies 22, but three straight incompletions and a sack by Bloomsburg’s Stevie Draper ended the IUP threat.

In all Brittingham rushed 27 times for 120 yards and finishing his career as the all-time leader in PSAC history and 14th best in D-II history with 5,689 yards. Latorre was 13 of 21 for the day for 164 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Bloomsburg University Football Game Notes

EAGER TO SCORE: Time of possession is a deceiving statistic for the Huskies. Last week against Clarion, Bloomsburg had six scoring drives; four of them lasted less than one minute and all were shorter than two minutes. From shortest to longest, BU’s scoring drives lasted 11, 12, 43, 45, 74, and 95 seconds. By contrast, Clarion’s three scores came on drives lasting 2:49, 5:12, and 5:34.

FAST START: Last week, Franklyn Quiteh’s 218-yard rushing was the 24th time a Bloomsburg back has run for 200+ in a game in the Danny Hale era. None of the other performances came earlier in the calendar year than Quiteh (Sept. 11).

MAKING HITCHCOCK PROUD: With the Crimson Hawks invading Redman Stadium this week, the Huskies now face off against their third consecutive avian opponent (AU Eagles, CU Golden Eagles).

FORTY LOVE: Following last week’s 41-13 victory over Clarion, Bloomsburg has now scored 40 or more points in at least one game in every season since 1993, the same year that Coach Hale took over the program.

MIND YOUR Q’S: Across all NCAA divisions, Franklyn Quiteh and Mike Quintans are the only starting and backup pair of running-backs on any team’s depth chart whose last names begin with “Q.” OVERTIME MASTERS: Since the elimination of ties in 1998, the Crimson Hawks are 7-0 in overtime games, winning six of those matchups on the road. By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger The eleven straight home openers the Huskies have won are new school record, breaking the previous high of 10 set from 1947 to 1956. Bloomsburg’s all-time record in home openers in 113 seasons is 70-38-5.

The Clarion game saw the Huskies score 40 points on offense, rush for over 300 yards, and score a touchdown in each quarter all for the first time in 18 games since a 43-7 victory over Cheyney on October 18, 2008. By contrast from 20002008 Bloomsburg had at least two games every year in which they put up a touchdown in each quarter, a total of 33 times during those nine seasons.

The 41 points versus Clarion was only the second time in the last 18 games Bloomsburg has scored at least 40 points in a game as a team, compiling a 12-6 record over that span. The 18 games before then dating back to the start of the 2007 season the Huskies reached 40 points 11 times with a record of 15-3.

Danny’s Hale’s record versus the PSAC West while at Bloomsburg is now 42-21, with a home record of 24-8 and 18-13 on the road.

Coach Hale is 4-7 versus Indiana while at Bloomsburg but has won the last three.

The only other time the Huskies have beaten IUP three consecutive times was in 1950, 1951 and 1985.

LAST WEEK BLOOMSBURG 41 - CLARION 13 September 11, 2010 BLOOMSBURG—With over 500 yards of total offense and another stellar performance from BU freshman Franklyn Quiteh, the Bloomsburg University football team handily defeated the Golden Eagles of Clarion University, 41-13, Saturday at Redman Stadium. Following a 140-yard performance at Ashland, Quiteh rushed for a game-high 218 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Huskies clinch their first win of the 2010 season.

Clarion looked strong on the game’s opening drive, orchestrating an 11-play, 75-yard drive, culminating in a one-yard keeper rush by sophomore quarterback Eric Coxon to give the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead.

On the Huskies’ first play from scrimmage, BU quarterback Pat Carey went deep to hit senior Cory Stiger for a 66-yard touchdown pass, quickly leveling the score at 7-7.

The Golden Eagles looked to respond and successfully navigated 53 yards to the Bloomsburg 15 before the Huskies recovered a fumble

by Coxon and retook possession. The remainder of first period was quiet, as neither offense managed to gain significant ground.

Early in the second quarter, Quiteh broke loose for a 35-yard rush on a drive that eventually ended with an 11-yard touchdown rush by BU junior fullback Matt Cox, giving the Huskies a 14-7 lead.

Shortly before halftime, Clarion tried to close the gap, but a 19-yard field-goal attempt by Robert Mamula was blocked by BU junior Wallace Jamison, and the Huskies entered intermission with the seven-point advantage.

After a Bloomsburg three-and-out to start the third quarter, Clarion drove 45 yards in 10 plays for a first down on the BU 10-yard line.

The Huskies held strong in the red zone, and the Golden Eagles were held to a field goal, narrowing the lead to 14-10.

Junior Tyler Guise got the Huskies’ momentum going with a 51-yard kickoff return to start the next drive. Guise would later have a 22yard reception, and an eight-yard TD Carey pass to senior Chris Tressler completed the drive.

On the second play of Clarion’s next drive, junior Bloomsburg linesman John Pettine put his hand on a Coxon pass and reeled it in for his first career interception. A 45-yard rush by Quiteh on BU’s second play broke the game open to 28-10. After a quick punt by Clarion on its next possession, Quiteh broke loose again, this time going all the way from 68-yards for his second TD of the day; BU led 34-10.

Clarion’s Mamula would post a 25-yard field goal to close the third period, but the Golden Eagles were unable to get their offensive game back on a positive track for the remainder of the game.

The fourth quarter elapsed quickly, opening with a 13-play drive by the Huskies, who were eager to milk time off the clock. True freshman Codie Butler replaced Quiteh in the final minutes and made an immediate impact in his college debut. Butler posted 84 yards in 10 attempts, including a five-yard touchdown to close out the game’s scoring at 41-13.

Quiteh’s 218 yards on the ground (15 attempts) marks the first time a Bloomsburg back has reached the double-century mark since BU all-time career rushing leader Jamar Brittingham accomplished the feat for his final time in 2007. Carey threw for 163 yards and completed nine of 16 passing attempts, including his 2 TD’s.

Defensively, BU senior Mike Varanavage had a game-high 12 tackles, tying his career-best; sophomore Jarrett Pidgeon followed with nine tackles. Clarion senior Nick Sipes had a team-high, posting nine stops of his own.

THE HUSKY OFFENSE: Junior Pat Carey, a transfer from D-I FCS institution Lafayette College, replaces four-year starter Dan Latorre under center. Carey threw for 303 yards and 2 TD’s in his first two games, connecting on 22 of 43 attempts.

Though Franklyn Quiteh started the season No. 4 on the depth chart, he is playing like an experienced starter racking up 358 yards in two games. Matt Cox came out of the backfield to make a single 8-yard reception in the opener. Mike Quintans backs up the tailbacks.

Senior tight end Ben Weaber has made five catches for 47 yards on the season. Classmate Cory Stiger leads the receivers with six receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown, while Tyler Guise, who missed last season with an injury, has caught four for 62 yards.

Matt Marchioni, Kyle Jackson and Chris Tressler have each caught a pair.

While injury has plagued the BU defensive line and limited its depth, Daryl Kurtz, Pat Casey, Chris Steck, Kenny Orlando, and Brandon Allen have been steady starters, reliably protecting Carey and breaking holes for Quiteh.

BLOOMSBURG DEFENSE: The Huskies return four linesmen who filled starting roles last season, including Marcus Zimmerman, Todd Givler, John Pettine and Dave Huot. Clarence Robinson has also seen starting action this season.

Outside linebackers Mike Varanavage and Thomas McFarland, combined to make over 160 tackles a year ago and have made 31 in the first two games. In the middle, Jarrett Pidgeon already has 15 stops in his starting role for the Huskies. The Huskies also have added depth at the position with Ryan Feldman, Sean Clift, Jeff Owsley and Pat Michael.

All-PSAC East selection Oscar Rivera returns as as a densive, while the Huskies also feature seniors Alex Landis and Dan Oliver and junior Vince Browning as starters. Rivera and Landis were both starters last season and combined to make over 100 tackles last season, while Browning and Oliver combined for 75 tackles as back-ups. Joining the group will be Justin Rivera, Dan Haverstock, Mark Scattene and Terrell Oglesby.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Jared Shannon and Dan Fisher continue to battle for responsibility of the kickoffs and field goal duties for the Huskies. Drew Snyder and Fisher are competing for the punting duties, though Fisher has almost exclusively held the responsibility so far. Specialist Ian Murray is doing the long-snapping for special teams. Tyler Guise is the starting punt returner, though he has been unable to break free in three attempts. Wallace Jamison has 100 yards in four kick returns, and will likely continue in this role as the season progresses.

HEAD COACH DANNY HALE Danny Hale, one of the winningest coaches in all of Division II, will begin his 18th season at the helm of the Huskies in 2010. Hale also spent five years as head coach at West Chester University.

Prior to West Chester, Hale was an offensive line and defensive coordinator at Colgate from 1981 to 1983. Prior to Colgate, Hale was the offensive line coach at Bucknell from 1975-80 and was defensive coordinator/linebacker coach at Vermont in 1974.

Hale is a graduate of West Chester, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education in 1968 and 1973. He was an all-conference pick at West Chester and earned the team’s most valuable player in the 1967 State Championship game, while also lettering three times for the track and field team. He is a member of the West Chester Football Hall of Fame and the Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
