About Bloomsburg University Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education. Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.
> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,400, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields.
> Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
> Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. Governance is through the State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors and through the university’s Council of Trustees.
> Cost—About $5,358 per semester for Pennsylvania residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans), $13,396 for non-residents.
> Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,026 per year.
> School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, originally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

Season Preview Four years ago when coach Leah Carr was assembling her first recruiting class as a head coach, she brought in Tia Mazzie, Kelsey Schwan, Ashley Bowers, and Rebecca Belmonte who have helped lay the foundation for what is now one of the top programs in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The four players have helped the Huskies to three playoff appearances and last year a school record-tying 13 wins. Their outstanding play and leadership has helped attract other top level players to the team. To say the senior class is special to Carr would be an understatement. “The seniors on our team have been with me all four years, my first recruiting class. This is a special group of players that have all worked extremely hard and have done a great job setting the attitude and leadership for the rest of the team,” said Carr. “As the core of our team, I’m really proud of all them and what they’ve been able to accomplish over the years.” The Huskies will need for the senior class along with a talented group of underclassmen to once again perform at a high level in the always-tough PSAC as the team once again battles for a PSAC playoff spot and ultimately a PSAC championship. ATTACK The Huskies attack will feature a wealth of talent and experience this season. Dominant attacker Allie Kakareka, a first team All-PSAC East and second team South Region choice, led the Huskies with 50 goals and 74 points and was second on the team with 24 assists.
Adding speed and athleticism to the attack is sophomore Maggie Canavan and incoming freshman and twin Ashley Bossert, while sophomores Kelsey Metzler and Lindsay Babilon have developed tremendous stick work after a year of experience. Kelsey Paulsen, a sophomore, will be looking to add time and experience to the attack this season. MIDFIELD Anchoring the midfield as a four year starter is Tia Mazzie, a second team All-PSAC East selection last year and one of the team’s captains this season. Mazzie is a solid and aggressive midfielder, and a player that makes things happen. Her sister Sam Mazzie, is a returning PSAC East Freshman of the Year along with being first team All-PSAC and AllRegion. Sam finished second on the team last season with 62 points, ranking third in both goals (42) and assists (20). “If there was an unsung hero award, it would have Tia’s name on it. She’s an all-around hard worker.” Adding midfield experience for the Huskies is Sarah Bennett, a relentless sophomore who contributes in both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. A composed player, sophomore Monica Novielli adds aggressiveness to the midfield.
“Allie is one of our best attackers and beyond her athleticism, she has a lot of heart which makes her an unstoppable player.” Kelsey Schwan, a team captain, and junior Sam King, a second team All-PSAC East, are looking to make a mark after working hard in the off-season to improve their game. King finished second on the team with 46 goals, scoring in all but one match.

Season Preview Stepping up this year and adding time to the midfield will come from sophomore Gabrielle Lochetto. Natalie Draham will also be looking to add some time this season. Incoming freshman Aubrey Bossert, adds depth to the midfield and has quickly adjusted to the college level of play. DEFENSE The Huskies welcome back an experienced defense, which features seniors Ashley Bowers and Rebecca Belmonte, in addition to junior Lindsay Kupferschmidt, sophomores Amber Shifflet and Deanna Hauser. Bowers, a team captain, is coming off a season in which she earned first team AllPSAC, led the team with 33 draw controls, grabbed 45 ground balls and caused 16 turnovers. A scrappy and tenacious low defender, Belmonte will contribute her consistency to the solid defense. Incoming freshman Courtney Werner will see some time in the defensive end, while adding speed. “Lindsay is coming off an outstanding season and she continues to get better every day. Amber is a defensive player that can be a threat anywhere on the field. We have a reliable and skilled defense to provide stability in front of the cage, said Carr.”
GOALKEEPER In goal, the Huskies welcome a familiar face in sophomore Shelby Iezzi, a first team All-PSAC East selection, while they also have the addition of Sara Bates to rely on. With stability and experience between the pipes, Bloomsburg looks to remain tough to permeate as the duo works to gain experience in front of the net. “Shelby has done a great job,” said Carr. “She is our returning goalie and she has worked hard this summer on her game in preparation for return.” SCHEDULE The PSAC has gone from a two-division setup to a single division format for the 2011 season. The change means an even more challenging schedule for the Huskies in the always-rugged PSAC. “Every game is going to be a battle for us; there won’t be any second chances. Our focus is going to be one game at a time,” said Carr. OVERALL Carr and the Huskies are confident that they have the talent and experience to battle for a PSAC playoff berth and a shot at the PSAC title. The senior class, the foundation of this year’s team, would have it no other way.

Leah Carr begins her fifth season as head coach of the Bloomsburg University women’s lacrosse team. In her first four seasons, Carr has led the Huskies to a mark of 43-29 and four PSAC playoff appearances. She has led two PSAC East freshman of the year, one All-American, six All-Region, and 24 All-PSAC players while coaching at Bloomsburg. Carr was also named the 2009 and 2010 PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year. In the 2010 season, Carr earned her second straight PSAC East Coach of the Year award after guiding the Huskies to a school record-tying 13 wins and berth in the PSAC playoffs. Under her direction, the Huskies have improved every year, posting nine wins in each of her first two seasons and 12 in 2009. The 43 wins over the past four seasons are the most over that stretch in school history since the Huskies won 44 games from 2002-05. The 268 goals scored by Bloomsburg in 2010 were just one short of the school record set in 2009. While at East Stroudsburg Carr was a four-year member of the lacrosse team and earned All-PSAC honors three times. She was also named the PSAC Rookie of the Year and first team All-ECAC in 2002 after scoring 25 goals and assisting on 14 others in her freshman season. As a junior, she was named an IWLCA second team All-American after scoring 49 goals and assisting on 11 and finished her career by being named to the NCAA Division II North/South Senior All-Star game. Carr, a native of Lansdale, Pa, was also East Stroudsburg’s co-captain and Women’s Lacrosse Outstanding Athlete in both 2004 and 2005. Overall, she scored 129 goals and assisted on 60 in her career. Off the field, she was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the PSAC StudentAthlete Advisory Committee and the East Stroudsburg Sport Management Club. In the fall of 2005, Carr coached the junior varsity field hockey team at Methacton High School leading the team to a mark of 11-5-4. She also served as assistant varsity coach and helped the team to a record of 17-3 and the Suburban I League title. Carr is a 2005 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in Sport Management. She was married in the summer of 2008 to John Carr and reside in Bloomsburg.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. The membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.
