BLOOMSBURG FACILITIES NELSON FIELD HOUSE

The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as home for most of the university’s indoor athletic events. The facility, constructed in 1971, recently underwent a $13.4 million dollar facelift. Among the renovations to the field house are a new bleacher system for the main gym area, a new scoreboard, a new wrestling room on the lower level of the facility, a new and expanded press box, dedicated locker rooms for each sport, including an expanded football locker room, improved office space and additional storage space. In addition the pool area has been completely renovated with improved lighting, new bleachers, new starting blocks, improved timing system and record board. The project also provided for enhancements to both the upper and lower entrances that will showcase the awards the teams have won over the last three decades. The project was completed in August of 2009.

2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW

A mixture of veteran returners along with an infusion of newcomers has given the Bloomsburg men’s basketball team a level of depth last year’s edition didn’t enjoy – and it’s that depth that has head coach John Sanow excited for the possibilities this season. “The depth is key for us. The new guys coming in have given us a positive lift in everything we’re doing,” Sanow said. “They’ve given us an opportunity to have depth where last year we were thin in that regard.” With an ability to potentially go with a rotation at least 10 players deep, Sanow will have many more lineup options depending on the flow of individual games. “We can manipulate the lineup, go big or small,” he assessed. “That gives us an opportunity to do some things defensively we weren’t capable of doing last year.” After an 8-19 season last year the Huskies hope for a deeper run this campaign after seeing their season end in the first round of the PSAC playoffs a year ago. The coaches of the PSAC seem to believe the Huskies are primed to move forward, picking Bloomsburg fourth in the preseason coaches’ poll. Bloomsburg returns its top five scorers from last year’s team while adding newcomers Sanow feels can make immediate impacts. “We feel collectively that we can be good,” Sanow said. “We don’t have to rely on one or two players. Each and every night it might be someone different on the offensive end.” Here’s a breakdown of the Huskies’ 2013-14 roster: 6

2013-14 Huskies Basketball

BACKCOURT Senior shooting guard Lorenzo Christmas returns after leading the Huskies in scoring at 16.0 points per game last year, also adding 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest. Christmas ranked ninth in the PSAC in scoring a year ago. “He had some big games for us last year and throughout his career. His challenge this year as a senior is to be more consistent on both ends of the floor. We are looking for him to be someone we can count on night in and night out to get the job done,” Sanow assessed. Charles Haigler also returns after posting 11.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game in his Huskies debut a year ago. Sanow expects continued improvement from the sophomore. “He has improved his strength and conditioning,” Sanow said. “He has also worked hard to improve his overall all skills, he gained valuable experience last year as a freshman and we hoping for him to build on that experience.” Junior Zach Sheetz brings a strong presence on the perimeter, shooting over 43 percent (37-for-85) from beyond the arc last year. Sheetz finished the season averaging 9.8 points per game in 16 contests last year. “He has tremendous ability to shoot the ball from the 3-point line,” Sanow emphasized. “Great basketball IQ, good court awareness and is looking to improve on the defensive side of the floor.” Also back is senior Andrew Morgan who registered 4.4 points and 1.9 rebounds in 10 games a year ago. “Andrew is a good ball handler, passer and perimeter shooter, as a senior we’re looking for him to put it all

2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW together,” Sanow said. Senior Jamar Smack also returns after sitting out last season. He saw time in 28 games with three starts during the 2011-12 year. “He’s someone that knows our system very well and is able to run our offense and call our defenses, he is a leader out on the floor,” Sanow described. Joining the backcourt are two newcomers – junior Jon Riles, a transfer from the University of Tampa, and freshman Christian Mortellite. Riles played 30 games, including 21 starts, with Tampa last year while averaging 4.6 points and 4.0 assists per game during his sophomore season after playing 25.2 minutes per game as a freshman for the Spartans. Mortellite will also bring another option on the perimeter. FRONT COURT Preseason All-PSAC East Team selection Dontahe Jordan returns for his senior season after averaging 14.6 points per game last year. The PSAC East Athlete of the Year following his sophomore campaign, the Huskies expect big things this season from the 6-foot-4 forward. “He can rebound, he can score the ball, he can play multiple position,” Sanow said. “He’s working to improve his defensive intensity and become a more all-around complete player. We’re looking for him to take his game to another level in his final campaign.” Redshirt sophomore Wes Lyons is battling back from injury after playing in 25 games with 8.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per night last year. “We are looking for him to improve on his scoring and rebounding from a year ago and to be able to be an aggressive defender while staying out of foul trouble,” Sanow said. Senior Armand Leaks is the team captain and saw time in a team-high 27 games with 21 starts in the middle. “A leader on and off the floor, he brings a tremendous amount of intensity to practice and games,” Sanow assessed. “He’s improved his 15-foot jump shot and his ability to finish plays inside. He works very hard on defense and is always looking to make hustle plays.” Junior Moustapha Noumbissi brings his 6-8, 226-pound frame into the middle again for the Huskies after turning

in 3.2 points and 2.6 rebounds in 25 games a year ago. “He has worked extremely hard on his strength, conditioning and skills in the low post,” Sanow said. “We are looking for him to be a dominating presence in the paint with his ability to block shots and rebound.” Senior Ed Hall is battling back from multiple knee injuries and is looking to contribute in any way he can. “Ed Hall has inspired all of us with his perseverance and courage,” Sanow said. “He is working extremely hard to make a comeback this year; he is getting stronger every day and getting more comfortable out on the floor with every practice.” The Huskies add Alssene Saintilus, a 6-foot-7 transfer from Chestnut Hill and 6-6 freshman Jameal Tucker. Saintilus averaged 8.9 points and 4.3 rebounds as a sophomore for Chestnut Hill in 2012-13. SEASON OUTLOOK West Chester was selected as the preseason Eastern Division favorite with five first-place votes, ahead of East Stroudsburg, Millersville and Bloomsburg. Mansfield, Lock Haven, Cheyney, Kutztown and Shippensburg completed the poll. “On paper you see ESU and West Chester as the top teams in the East,” Sanow said. “We feel like we’re right there as well. If we can stay healthy with the added depth that we have we can fight for the Eastern Division championship and host playoff games.” Sanow believes the key to challenging the top teams in the East could be improvement on the defensive end of the floor. “Our focus has really been on defense,” he said. “Because of our depth and experience we feel we can come out every night and play aggressively for the entire 40 minutes. We believe if we do that, we will a great opportunity to be successful this year” The Huskies open on Nov. 8 at Chestnut Hill before debuting at home Nov. 12 vs. Penn State Hazelton. “We have to take care of our home court and steal a couple of games on the road. We have to continue to get better throughout the year individually and collectively as a team,” Sanow said. “Our goal is to improve with each practice and each game so we our playing our best basketball at the end of the year.” 2013-14 Huskies Basketball
