Having achieved his 150th win this season against Shippensburg, Hale has a 154-51-1 (.750) record and the most wins in school history. For his career, Hale is 194-64-1 and his winning percentage of .751 is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in Division II and top 20 D-II coaches all-time. Hale has led BU to six playoff appearances, including the latest in 2008. He has been honored as the PSAC East Coach of the Year 10 times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine times, and was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year following the 2000 season. Marty Schaetzle (Bucknell ‘83) is concluding his ninth-year at the helm of the Mercyhurst football program. During his tenure, Schaetzle has a 40-57 (.412) overall record, including a 20-44 (.312) mark while his Lakers were in the GLIAC and a 20-13 (.606) ledger since. Prior to his arrival at Mercyhurst, Schaetzle was an assistant at the Patriot League’s Bucknell University. PSAC EAST FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Franklyn Quiteh has put together an outstanding freshman season for the Huskies after being named the starter just a few days before the season opening game. Quiteh has rushed for more than 100 yards in 11 of the 12 games this season, including three games with more than 200 yards. His career-high came in a win over East Stroudsburg when he gained 246 yards. Later in the season, in a 61-35 win over Kutztown which gave the Huskies the PSAC East title, Quiteh rushed for 194 yards and scored four touchdowns. Four times during the season he was named PSAC East Freshman of the Week and was also recently named a national finalist for the Harlon Hill Award as the nation’s top division II football player. PSAC EAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Mike Varanavage, one of the team’s captains, becomes the second straight BU linebacker to be receive the award, following in the footsteps of Anthony Smith. He has also intercepted three passes, broken up two passes, recovered two fumbles and forced one. Varanavage was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. He has also made 10 or more tackles in a game five times, including a career-high 12 in a win over Clarion. In the Huskies win over Kutztown, Varanavage intercepted a pass and returned the ball 23 yards setting up a Bloomsburg touchdown.

SCOUTING MERCYHURST: Mercyhurst’s offense is one of the most balanced in the conference, with the Lakers’ currently ranked ninth in the PSAC in rushing (140.0 yards/game) and seventh in passing (219.6 yards/game). While its offensive numbers may not seem impressive, the team has demonstrated a defensive prowess on the field. Mercyhurst has held its opponents to 176.1 passing yards/game (3rd in PSAC) and a mere 95.6 yards rushing (3rd in PSAC). Individually, the Lakers are led by Travis Rearick, who has thrown for 1,620 yards and 19 touchdowns on the year, while only giving up 7 interceptions. Having only played in eight of 11 games, Rearick has not qualified for the NCAA charts, but would otherwise be the 38th-best passer in D-II and 5th in the PSAC by efficiency. Gerald Anderson is averaging well over 100 yards rushing per game and has the 24th-most yards per game in the Division. Joining him on the offensive front, Trevor Kennedy and Terrance Coon have become two of the conference’s most prolific receivers. Defensively, Bryan Boyce is ranked among the conference’s top 15 players in tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks. Dan Kruper, Tim Herbener, and Fred Hale round out the Lakers’ defensive statistical leaders. On special teams, Mercyhurst is statistically the conference leader in punt returns, gaining an average of 18.35 yards per punt. The Lakers’ are eighth in the league in kickoff returns and turnover margin, while they rank tenth in net punting.

Last Meeting #16 Mercyhurst 56 - #11 Bloomsburg 37 November 13, 2010 ERIE--Mercyhurst quarterback Travis Rearick threw for 345 yards and four scores to lead the Lakers to a 56-37 win over Bloomsburg in the PSAC Championship game. Mercyhurst scored on its second possession of the game with Rearick hitting Terrence Coon with a 61-yard scoring pass to make it 7-0. Bloomsburg answered with a field goal on its ensuing possession when Daniel Fisher connected on a 26-yard field goal to cap a 61-yard drive. The big play in the drive was a 49-yard completion from Huskies quarterback Pat Carey to Cory Stiger; however, Stiger was hurt on the play and could not return. The Lakers extended their lead to 14-3 when Rearick hit Matt Mohr with a 28-yard scoring pass capping a 49-yard scoring drive. Bloomsburg closed the gap to 14-10 later in the first taking advantage of a special team’s mistake by Mercyhurst. On a BU punt, the Lakers Trevor Kennedy mishandled the ball with Dave Onorato recovering at the Mercyhurst 35-yard line. Two plays later, Franklyn Quiteh, scored on a 32-yard run. The home team answered by marching 81-yards with Rearick throwing his third TD pass of the game--a four yard strike to Ryan Bartizal--making it 21-10. Later, the Lakers struck with special teams when Kennedy returned a punt 78-yards for a TD. The Huskies came right back and narrowed the gap back to 11 points when Carey hit Kyle Fisher with a 36-yard scoring pass to make it 28-17. Mercyhurst’s Rearick responded and hit Kennedy with an 81-yard scoring pass for a 35-17 lead at the break. In the second half, Bloomsburg started with the ball, but Carey was intercepted by Kevin Williams who returned the ball 28 yards for a score to make it 42-17. After the teams twice traded punts, Bloomsburg made it a 42-24 game when Carey led a 50-yard scoring drive going the final five yards himself to cut the deficit for the Huskies. Bloomsburg narrowed the gap to 42-30 early in the fourth period when, Carey hit Kyle Fisher with a 76-yard scoring strike. On the next possession for Mercyhurst, Rearick directed a 70-yard scoring drive with Gerald Henderson scoring from oneyard out for a 49-30 lead. Bloomsburg did not quit and came back with a quick scoring drive with Carey hitting Tyler Guise with a 23-yard scoring pass. But again the Lakers answered a score with one of their own. Garrett Kensy capped the win for Mercyhurst hitting Kennedy with a 17-yard scoring pass. Bloomsburg Mercyhurst

Bloomsburg University Football Game Notes
STIFLING THE OPPONENT: Bloomsburg has held its opponents to fewer than 20 yards on 85 of 153 (56%) of their total drives. On 31 of those drives (20% of the total), the Huskies forced a punt after only three plays. THROWING THE BOMB: The Huskies have thrown eight passes of 50+ yardage this season. Pat Carey has connected on six touchdowns from the Bloomsburg side of midfield: 66 yards (Clarion) and 65 yards (Kutztown) to Cory Stiger; 68 yards (Indiana), 62 yards (Cheyney), and 76 yards (Mercyhurst) to Kyle Fisher; and 52 yards (Shippensburg) to Chris Tressler. On BU’s other long passes, tight end Ben Weaber hurled 53 yards to Fisher on a trick play that ended on the West Chester three-yard line, and last week at California, the pair connected on a 57-yard TD pass to take the lead in the fourth quarter. BREAKING LOOSE: Bloomsburg has recorded 24 rushes for 20 yards or more this season, eight of which ended in touchdowns. Franklyn Quiteh is responsible for all but one of these long scoring runs, as he found the endzone from 45 and 68 yards against Clarion, from 25 yards at Millersville, from 23 yards at Cheyney, from 37 yards against West Chester, from 25 yards against Kutztown and from 38 yards at California. Codie Butler had a 62-yard run end on the one-yard line versus Kutztown but later got a second chance and escaped downfield for a 63-yard touchdown, one of his two in the game. EXTENDING THE RECORD: Currently the PSAC’s leader in field goals per game, redshirt freshman Daniel Fisher is now in exclusive possession of the Bloomsburg single-season record for field goals completed (20) and attempted (23). The previous record was set in 1986 when Chris Mingrone was successful on 10 of his 20 attempts. On October 30, Fisher also broke the BU single-game record, which stood at three entering the season. His average of 1.67 field goals per game is fourth in NCAA Division II.
FROM THE ARCHIVES By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger The Huskies have now won ten games for just the seventh time in school history covering 113 seasons. The only other years were in 1985 (12), 1996 (10), 2000 (12), 2005 (11), 2006 (12) and 2008 (11). During the 2010 regular season, Bloomsburg won all nine games they were ahead at halftime and lost the two they were behind at the break. In Danny Hale’s tenure at Bloomsburg his regular season record when leading at the half is 128-10, when behind 15-32-1, and tied 4-3. In the 15 NCAA play-off games the Huskies have participated in since 1985 their record is 8-7. They have trailed at the half in ten of them for a record of 4-6, and are 3-1 when ahead and 1-0 when tied. The victory over California was only the third play-off road win in school history. The other two were against UC-Davis in 2000 and Shepherd in 2006. Bloomsburg has a 5-2 home record in the play-offs, 3-4 on the road, and 0-1 at a neutral site (Florence, Alabama for the 2000 national title game). Mercyhurst will be the fourth different team since 2005 the Huskies have faced in both the regular season and post season. Bloomsburg defeated West Chester twice in 2006 and split with Golden Rams in 2008; the Huskies split with East Stroudsburg in 2005 and California in 2008.

LEADING THE NATION: For the tenth week this season and ninth straight, Franklyn Quiteh sits atop the Division II rushing leaderboard. His average of 156.9 yards per game is now 15 yards per game more than runner-up Phil Milbrath of Michigan Tech (141.2). Across all divisions, Quiteh was the first runner to reach the 1,000-yard mark this season and has racked up the second-most yards rushing (1,883), trailing only Jim Bower (1,917) of D-III’s Maine Maritime. THE RECORD BOOK: Franklyn Quiteh has assembled the third-best rushing season in Bloomsburg history, is No. 5 on the PSAC all-time rushing list, and stands 29 yards away from a spot in the NCAA Division II all-time top 25. Of those rushers on the national list, only Joique Bell (2006, 2,065 yards) and Johnny Bailey (1986, 2,011) have ever broken the 2,000 yard barrier in their freshman season. With 117 or more yards against Mercyhurst, Quiteh would become the third back in D-II to ever complete the task.

Bloomsburg University Football Game Notes Last Week #20 BLOOMSBURG 28 - #7 CALIFORNIA 26 November 20, 2010
CALIFORNIA, PA.—Franklyn Quiteh rushed for 141 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Bloomsburg University to a 28-26 win over California University of Pennsylvania in an NCAA Division II Championship first round playoff game. After the first three drives of the game resulted in punts, the Huskies put together an eight play, 80-yard scoring drive late in the first period capped by a 15-yard run from Quiteh early in the second period putting the Huskies up 7-0 after the Daniel Fisher extra point. Quiteh also had a 34-yard run in the drive that moved the ball from the Huskies 21-yard line to the Cal 45. However, on the scoring drive, the Huskies lost wide receiver Chris Tressler to an injury. Tressler left the game with an undisclosed injury and did not return. The Vulcans answered on their next possession going 63 yards with quarterback Josh Portis throwing a 27-yard TD pass to Chedrick Cherry with 9:32 to go before halftime to tie the game at 7-7. Later in the period the Vulcans took over at their own 44-yard line with 1:18 to play before half and moved to the Huskies six yard line with 21 seconds to go. But on third and goal Portis was sacked by Bloomsburg’s Mike Pecot back to the Bloom 12yard. That forced Cal to settle for a 30-yard field goal from Marc Domonkos as time expired giving them a 10-7 lead at the break. In the third period the Vulcans Tommie Campbell intercepted BU quarterback Pat Carey deep in Cal territory. That would later lead to a Cal 46-yard field goal from Domonkos giving the home team a 13-7 lead with 6:57 to go in third period. Bloomsburg though responded and regained the lead on its next drive. Carey directed the Huskies on a 65-yard scoring drive. Along the way he hit Tyler Guise for gains of 11 and 22 yards before connecting with Ryan Dickerson on a 33-yard scoring pass to make it 14-13 with 3:56 in the third. But, once again, Cal had an answer for the Huskies and came back with its own 63-yard scoring drive capped by Portis hitting Terrance Moore with a 29-yard scoring pass with 35 seconds left in the third making it 20-14. The Huskies took the lead for the third time in the game on its next series. Taking over on its own 12-yard line, Bloomsburg moved to its own 37-yard line where it faced a fourth and one and the game on the line. But the Vulcans were called for off-sides giving the Huskies new life at their own 42. After a run from Quiteh, Bloomsburg tight end Ben Weaber took a pass behind the line of scrimmage and threw a 57-yard TD pass to Kyle Fisher putting the Huskies on top 21-20. It was the second completion of the season for Weaber with both throws going over 50-yards. On the kickoff, a penalty by the Vulcans put them back at their own 15-yard line to start the drive. After Portis was sacked on consecutive plays Cal was forced to punt from its own end zone giving the Huskies the ball at the Vulcan 38-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Quiteh broke the line and ran 38-yards for a score putting the Huskies on top 28-20 with 5:32 to play. On the next kickoff, Cal was again penalized and forced to start the drive at its own seven-yard line. The Vulcans used the passing of Portis to move the ball to the Huskies 42-yard line. On a fourth and 10 play, Portis’ pass was incomplete, but the Huskies were called for pass interference giving the Vulcans new life. On the next play Portis hit Cherry with a 28-yard scoring pass to pull the Vulcans within two at 28-26. Portis though could not complete the two-point conversion keeping it a two-point game. Bloomsburg then recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock. Quiteh, a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Award as D-II’s top player, finished 141 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. He now has 1,883 yards rushing on the season, third best single season mark in school history and needs 117 next week to become just the third player in school history to top 2,000 rushing in a season. Defensively, Oscar Rivera finished with 11 tackles, nine solo, while Jarrett Pidgeon, Mike Varanavage and Solomon Oliver each had eight. Cal was led by Portis who was 26-48 for 300 yards and three scores, but was sacked four times. The NCAA playoff win was the eighth in school history and the fifth time in eight NCAA appearances that the Huskies has advanced past the first round.
