MATCH UP: In the first week of PSAC divisional play, Bloomsburg faces the Marauders of Millersville University. In a series dating back to 1916, the Huskies lead 37-30-5 all-time, having won the last 10 editions of the matchup. Throughout the decades, both teams had periods of domination (see Archivist Bob Dunkleberger’s note on Page 4), and the Huskies hope to maintain momentum by repeating the success of their 45-10 win last season THE HEAD COACHES: Huskies coach Danny Hale (West Chester ‘68) is in his 18th year at the helm of the Bloomsburg program. With the Huskies, he has a 146-50-1 (.744) record and has the most wins in school history. For his career, Hale is 186-63-1 and his winning percentage of .746 is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in Division II and top 20 D-II coaches all-time. Hale has led BU to six playoff appearances, including the latest in 2008. He has been honored as the PSAC East Coach of the Year 10 times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine times, and was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year following the 2000 season. Currently in his third year as Millersville’s head coach, Greg Colby (Illinois ‘75) has a 6-19 (.240) record with the Marauders. Colby is a graduate of Danville High School and spent three years as a starter for the Fighting Illini. His resume includes coaching stints at Illinois, Michigan State, and Northwestern. Altogether, Colby has 34 years of coaching experience, including 25 at the college level and 10 years as a defensive coordinator in the Big Ten. SCOUTING IUP: (Courtesy Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Millersville (3-8, 2-5) posted a two-win improvement last year over 2008 and also won one more divisional game, a small step in the right direction for a rebuilding program. Whether or not the Marauders can keep that momentum going will likely depend on how much its defense can improve. Despite posting modest improvements from two years ago, Millersville still ranked at or near the bottom of the PSAC in most defensive categories last year, including rushing and overall defense, where they ranked dead last. The good news for the Marauders is that nine players return on defense. Seven of those 10 returnees are seniors or juniors, including three of the four starters on the defensive line, led by second team All-PSAC pick Chad Miller. All three starting linebackers also return as do two members of the secondary, including starting cornerback Jamie Hoffman, who started last year as a freshmen. With another year of experience for all of the defensive players and with head coach Greg Colby and his defensive background entering his third year, the Marauder defense is poised for another significant improvement. Offensively, Millersville has some weapons and experience, particularly at the quarterback and wide receiver positions. Senior Bill Shirk returns for his second full year as the starting quarterback after moving into the starting position during the 2008 season, taking over for Jamal Smith, who is now one of the top wideouts in the PSAC. That combination went for 10 touchdowns last year, including four in one game, and figures to be one of the top passing combinations in the PSAC this year. Junior Matt Egenrieder also returns, while Smith is also a big threat on kick returns. The Marauders also have three returning starters on the offensive line but lost top rusher Brad Lantz. They do, however, return senior Cardoza Jacks, who led the team in rushing two years ago and averaged an impressive 5.2 yards per carry last year as the backup.

LAST MEETING #4 Bloomsburg 45, Millersville 10 October 3, 2009 BLOOMSBURG--Quarterback Dan Latorre rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Huskies to a 45-10 win over Millersville. The win was the 90th win of the decade (2000-09) for Bloomsburg. After the Huskies stopped the Marauders on the opening drive of the game, Bloomsburg moved the ball 75 yards in 11 plays with Latorre scoring his 20th career rushing touchdown. Bloomsburg went ahead 14-0 later in the first period when defensive end Justin Presley intercepted Millersville quarterback Bill Shirk, and tailback Derrick Price went on to score from three yards out to put the Huskies on top by two scores. In the second period, Price scored his second touchdown of the game from four yards out. After the BU defense forced its second three-and-out of the game, the Huskies drove 55 yards in seven plays with Latorre hitting Jordan Weisman with a nine-yard scoring pass. Millersville got on the board later in the period, putting together a 40 yard drive capped off by a 47-yard field goal by John Banzhof. The Huskies, answered right back droving downfield in five plays with Latorre running 17 yards down the sideline and diving to the end zone for a score and a 35-3 lead at the half. Real scored early in the third period when he took a punt at his own 32-yard line and found a seam in the center of the field and went 68 yards for a score. It was the Huskies first punt return for a score since the 2006 season. In the fourth period, the Huskies added to their score with a 22-yard field goal by Jon Koenig. Millersville’s Cardoza Jacks got the Marauders only touchdown of the night when he scored from a yard out with 2:32 to play. Millersville Bloomsburg

Bloomsburg University Football Game Notes

RUNNER-UP: After being held to just 91 yards last week, running back Franklyn Quiteh fell from the top spot on the NCAA D-II rushing leaderboard and is currently second behind Hillsdale College’s Joe Glendening (165.67). DOG FIGHT: The Huskies’ secondary will face a battle in the air against Millersville. Marauder Bill Shirk leads the PSAC in passing yards per game (321.7) and passing efficiency (177.3), while his top target Jamal Smith leads in receptions (25) and receiving yards per game (149.0) TAKE YOUR PICK: Prior to last Saturday’s victory over Indiana, the last time the Huskies had five interceptions in a game was on October 1, 1994 in Redman Stadium, a 20-7 victory over Mansfield in the rain. All five were off starter Bryan Woodworth. After trailing 7-0, Bloomsburg scored the last 20 points of the game. Current assistant coach Chet Henicle had two picks in that game, while Frank Babula, Steve Foster, and Bob James each had one. LONG ARM: With 237 passing yards against Indiana, Pat Carey broke the doublecentury mark for the first time in his career. The last Husky to throw for 200+ was Dan Latorre (350) at West Chester on Halloween 2009. For the second consecutive week, Carey has tossed a TD pass in excess of 50 yards, most recently completing a 68-yard throw to Kyle Fisher. RETURNING THE FAVOR: A 60-yard interception return for a touchdown by twotime PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week Mike Varanavage against Indiana was the Huskies’ first defensive touchdown since Brandon Wright recovered a fumble recovery in the Cal (Pa.) endzone on 9/5/2009. It was the team’s first pick-six since Vince Browning returned an interception on 10/11/2008 against ESU. Later in last week’s game against IUP, Dan Haverstock gave the BU defense another touchdown with a 68-yard fumble return.

FROM THE ARCHIVES By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger The 47 points versus IUP are the most the Huskies have ever scored against the Crimson Hawks in the series that began in 1925, and the most by either team with the exception of the 48 IUP ran up in 1989. The 27-point margin-of-victory tied the largest ever for BU in the series, first set in 2005 when the Huskies won at Indiana by a score of 27-0. It was the second straight game Bloomsburg scored at least 40 points, the 17th time the team has had such a streak under Danny Hale since 1993. Before then it had only happened twice in school history against collegiate competition: in 1951 and 1954. The Huskies have now scored 40 or more points in a game 66 times under Danny Hale in his 18th season, while in 88 seasons from 1901-1992 it was only accomplished 23 times versus college teams. Bloomsburg’s all-time record versus Millersville is 37-30-5 in a series that began in 1916, with the Huskies 22-11-4 at home and 15-19-1 away. It has been a backand-forth series, with Bloomsburg going 20-9-4 from 1916 to 1970, the Marauders 21-7-1 from 1971 to 1999, and the Huskies winning the last ten contests. Following on the 40-point theme, Bloomsburg has scored at least 40 points versus Millersville seven of the last nine games after doing it only three times before 2001: in 1916, 1950 and 1951.

Last Week BLOOMSBURG 47 - INDIANA 20 September 18, 2010 BLOOMSBURG—After falling behind 10-0 in the first quarter, the Bloomsburg University football team went on a 47-3 rampage, as the Huskies defeated the visiting Crimson Hawks of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 47-20, at Redman Stadium. With the win, Bloomsburg improved to 2-1 on the year, while IUP slid to an identical ledger. The game began ominously, as the opening boot of BU kicker Jared Shannon was muffed by IUP. The Crimson Hawks recovered the ball and marched 41 yards before being forced to punt. A Bloomsburg fumble on the return put the ball back in IUP’s hands, allowing the Crimson Hawks to get on the board first with a 35-yard field goal by Craig Burgess. On its next possession, IUP seemed capable of walking away with the game, as a 42-yard drive capped by a seven-yard rush by freshman Teddy Blakeman extended the Crimson Hawks’ advantage to 10-0. Bloomsburg went to the air the subsequent possession, and on his first pass of the day, quarterback Pat Carey connected with sophomore Kyle Fisher, who stayed on his feet for 68 yards to score a touchdown pass in his first game of the 2010 season. The 10-7 score stood for nearly a quarter of the game, but late in the second period, Burgess connected on a 29-yard kick, extending the IUP lead to 13-7. The Huskies then assembled an eight-play, 70-yard drive highlighted by a 20 yard completion from Carey to senior Chris Tressler and a six-yard TD run by redshirt freshman Franklyn Quiteh, as Bloomsburg narrowly jumped in front 14-13. IUP, led by first-time starting quarterback Bo Napoleon, hoped to regain the lead in the final seconds before halftime, but an errant pass by Napoleon on the first play of the next drive landed in the hands of BU senior D. Solomon Oliver for his first career interception. Five plays later, Quiteh ran the final yard of the drive, giving the Huskies a 21-13 advantage entering the break. Less than a minute into third quarter, Quiteh lost a fumble near midfield, giving the IUP supporters hope to equalize the score. The wishes of those fans would not come true, as the Crimson Hawks fell into a disastrous slump, turning the ball over six times in their next eight possessions, including four more interceptions and two lost fumbles in a pattern of unfortunate mistakes that stretched late into the fourth quarter. Bloomsburg broke the game open during that span, starting their second-half scoring with a 60-yard interception return by last week’s PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week Mike Varanavage; redshirt freshman Dan Fisher connected on a pair of field goals from 43 and 34 yards; and Carey connected on his second touchdown pass of the day, this time finding senior tight end Ben Weaber from two yards out. The dust finally settled after a 68-yard fumble return found BU sophomore Dan Haverstock with the ball in the end zone for his first career defensive touchdown, as the Huskies posted 26 second-half points and led 47-13 with five minutes to play in the game. IUP managed to partially redeem their day by coordinating a 49-yard drive on the ground capped by a four-yard TD rush by freshman Teddy Blakeman, giving the Crimson Hawks their final seven points of the day. The Bloomsburg fans rose to their feet as the clock hit 0:00 with the Huskies in front 47-20. Bloomsburg’s Carey ended the game having completed 13 of 19 passes, totaling 237 yards and two touchdowns. Napoleon, who replaced an injured Pat Smith under center for IUP, connected on only 12 of 32 attempts, throwing five interceptions while managing 128 yards. BU’s Quiteh, who entered the game as the leading rusher in all of NCAA Division II, was held to just 91 yards on 22 carries, though he still managed to find the end zone twice, bringing his touchdown total up to five on the season. Defensively, Varanavage led the way again for the Huskies, racking up 11 tackles on the day and scoring his first defensive touchdown. Thomas McFarland was credited with a season-high nine tackles on the day. Junior Wallace Jamison saw his first career interception and fumble recovery while sophomore Justin Rivera made his first career interception. For the Crimson Hawks, redshirt freshman Mike Scott had a team-high 11 tackles followed by senior Jeff Vaughn with 10. Carl Thornton and Larry Federoff both had fumble recoveries for IUP.
