MATCH UP: Last year, Shippensburg’s narrow win over then-No. 3 Bloomsburg marked the first of three consecutive losses that concluded the 2009 season. In the overall series, Bloomsburg leads 31-42 dating back to 1917. THE HEAD COACHES: Huskies coach Danny Hale (West Chester ‘68) is in his 18th year at the helm of the Bloomsburg program. With a win, this weekend’s match against Shippensburg would be Hale’s 150th victory as Bloomsburg Head Coach. With the Huskies, he has a 149-50-1 (.748) record and has the most wins in school history. For his career, Hale is 189-63-1 and his winning percentage of .749 is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in Division II and top 20 D-II coaches all-time. Hale has led BU to six playoff appearances, including the latest in 2008. He has been honored as the PSAC East Coach of the Year 10 times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine times, and was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year following the 2000 season. Head Coach William “Rocky” Rees is in his 21st season with the Red Raiders, having recorded a 119-109-1 record at Shippensburg. Previously, Rees assisted at West Chester, Bucknell, and Colgate. The New Jersey native took over Head Coach duties at D-III Susquehanna in 1985, and after five years, he made the transition to his current position. AMONG THE RANKS: In the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and d2football.com polls, Bloomsburg is the No. 20 team in Division II. The Huskies had received votes in five previous editions of the AFCA survey and now join California and Kutztown among the nation’s top 25. PSAC EAST AT A GLANCE: With the first half of the season in the books, the race for the PSAC East Division title is beginning to take shape...

Shippensburg at West Chester (10/7/2010)

Last Meeting

(from Shippensburg Sports Information) WEST CHESTER, Pa. – A national television audience witnessed two prestigious PSAC institutions compete in a truly memorable showdown from Farrell Stadium, as both Shippensburg and West Chester totaled 512 yards on offense in combining for 87 points. What was likely the longest game in Shippensburg University history ended in the most unfortunate of manners for the Red Raider faithful, as a blocked extra-point attempt in the second overtime gave West Chester a 44-43 victory in a contest that ended just before midnight. Long before the game required extra sessions, the Red Raiders trailed by 10 points in the third quarter but used some big plays to eventually establish a lead in the fourth quarter. A beautifully executed pass from quarterback Steven Adams found tailback Mike Frenette in stride, as the 64-yard strike brought Shippensburg within four points. The defense then produced its big play early in the fourth quarter when senior safety Jamahn McCollough stepped in front a pass for his fifth career interception, putting the ball in the hands of the Red Raiders at the WCU 41-yard line. Sophomore fullback Pat Schuhl took over on the ensuing drive – running for 28 yards and scoring his first career rushing touchdown to put Shippensburg ahead, 23-20. Less than two minutes later, the festival of lead changes continued when Golden Ram freshman quarterback Sean McCartney threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to LaRonn Lee to arm West Chester with a four-point lead. Making the first start of his career, McCartney finished with 444 passing yards and five touchdowns. Undaunted, SU re-gained the lead just three plays later. On a third-down play, Adams found sophomore Bryan Barley for a quick pass up the middle and the race was on. Barley sprinted to paydirt for a 60-yard touchdown, the longest of his young career, to put SU ahead 30-27. On the next drive, the defense recorded its second fourth-down stand of the game when defensive end Dainen Green tipped a pass that fell incomplete. West Chester got the ball one more time in regulation but was pinned at its own 14-yard line with just over two minutes remaining. However, the Golden Rams converted twice on fourth down to reach the SU 25-yard line and kick a 42-yard field goal that sent the game into overtime. SU got the ball to start overtime and scored in six plays, reaching the end zone on a three-yard plunge by sophomore fullback Kevin Herod. The Golden Rams needed just one play to send the game into double overtime, and in that second frame, converted a third-and-goal from the SU 13-yard line to put the pressure back on the Red Raiders. Marshall and Herod needed just four carries to score in overtime – with Herod’s 1-yard plunge marking the final score of the game before the blocked extra point. Adams completed 16-of-27 passes for a career-high 298 yards and two touchdowns. Marshall totaled 246 all-purpose yards, moving into third place all-time in school history (3,887) in passing Dave Brown ’01, Mike Erlandson ’99 and Jamie Ware ’99.

BLOOMSBURG--Chase DiFebbo caught an 11-yard scoring pass with 46 seconds left to lift Shippensburg past Bloomsburg 28-27 in a PSAC Eastern Division showdown. The Huskies took the early lead in the game scoring on its first drive of the game. Kenny Domzalski put the Huskies on top with a 20-yard scoring rush. Shippensburg responded with Harris catching an 11-yard pass from Chad DiFebbo to tie the score at 7-7. After a 23-yard kickoff return from Branden Wright put the ball near midfield, the Huskies needed just four plays to score with Derrick Price running the final 25-yards. The Huskies extended that lead to 21-7 early in the second quarter when Domzalski ran a career-long 77 yards. Shippensburg, trimmed the lead 21-13 by halftime with a pair of field goals from Kyler Ford. In the third period, the Huskies extended their lead to 24-13 with a 39-yard field goal from Jon Koenig. The Red Raiders answered when Mike Frenette scored on a 55-yard run and then converted a two-point conversion to pull within three at 24-21. Despite a 41-yard pass from Latorre to Chris Tressler, the Huskies settled for a 24yard field goal from Koenig on their next drive, giving them a 27-21 advantage. DiFebbo’s 11-yarder from his brother Chad DiFebbo capped a 15-play, 79-yard drive for Shippensburg. Kyler Ford converted the extra point to put Shippensburg in front 28-27 with 46 seconds to go. Domzalski finished with 121 yards rushing and two scores for Bloomsburg, while Price totaled 109 yards and one score. On defense, Anthony Smith made a team-high 14 tackles. Shippensburg Bloomsburg

LOOKING FOR 150: With a win over Shippensburg, Bloomsburg Head Coach Danny Hale will have his 150th win with the Huskies. Here’s a look at some of Hale’s other historic wins: Win Date Opponent Score 1 Sept. 18, 1993 Lock Haven 35-32 10 Oct. 20, 1994 Kutztown 29-17 25 Sept. 23, 1995 American Intn’l 28-24 50 Oct. 30, 1999 East Stroudsburg 27-27 100 Sept. 24, 2005 Indiana (Pa.) 27-0 150 ? ? ?-? LEADING THE NATION: For the fourth week this season, Franklyn Quiteh, is currently atop the Division II rushing leaderboard. His average of 173.3 yards per game is 23 yards more than runner-up Joe Glendening of Hillsdale (153.2). Across all divisions, Quiteh has more rushing yards than any other college athlete and is the only one to have ran more than 1,000 yards thus far. IT’S GOOD, AGAIN!: For the second week in a row, Bloomsburg kicker Daniel Fisher booted his way into the BU record book. After setting the school-record with four field goals in a game against East Stroudsburg, Fisher nailed his 10th goal of the 2010 season last week against Cheyney. The redshirt freshman is now tied with Chris Mingrone, who successfully kicked 10 field goals during the 1986 season. Fisher is also well on his way to the career-record of 29 field goals shared by Mark Weiss (1988-1991), Bill Beall (1992-1995), and Jon Koenig (2006-2009).

FROM THE ARCHIVES By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger The 31 point halftime lead at Cheyney marked the 14th time Bloomsburg has had a 30 point or more advantage at the half under Danny Hale, seven of them versus the Wolves. It was the first time in a road game since the Huskies led 42-0 at Lock Haven in 2005. Bloomsburg scored 52 points versus Cheyney despite having only 383 yards of total offense. This was the lowest total yardage figure in a game scoring 50 or more points since the Huskies had only 380 in getting 50 against East Stroudsburg in 1998, thanks primarily to the three interceptions Bloomsburg returned that day for touchdowns. Over their past five games the Huskies have scored a total of 210 points with an average margin of victory of 28.6 points per game. It is the most total points they’ve scored in five games since the last four contests of 2007 and first of 2008 resulted in 222 points, and the biggest winning margin in five games since the first five of 2005 when Bloomsburg won by an average of 33.4 points per game. Bloomsburg’s all-time record versus Shippensburg is 31-42 in 73 games in a series that began in 1917, with a mark of 20-17 at home and 11-25 away. Danny Hale has a record of 8-8 versus the Red Raiders, 5-3 at home and 3-5 away. The 21-0 shutout victory the Huskies enjoyed over Shippensburg the last time they visited in 2008 was the first time Bloomsburg had accomplished that feat in the series since a 6-0 road triumph in 1932.

CHASING HISTORY: The chart above shows the game-by-game rushing totals for Franklyn Quiteh compared to those of the best seasons of Bloomsburg’s three all-time leading rushers. Through six games, Quiteh’s total (918) surpasses Glaze (789) but trails Brittingham (1,093) and Sigler (1,427) at the same point in their historic seasons.

Last Week BLOOMSBURG 52 - CHEYNEY 14 October 9, 2010 CHEYNEY—Franklyn Quiteh rushed for 122 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Bloomsburg University to a 52-14 win over Cheyney University. The win was the fifth straight for the Huskies after an opening season loss. Quiteh, who went into the contest as Division’s II leading rusher, got the Huskies off to a quick start when he scored on a two-yard run on the opening drive of the game. Quiteh, who was averaging over 183 yards a game, carried six times for 44 yards on the drive. After Bloomsburg’s Alex Landis intercepted a Cheyney pass on the Wolves’ first series, the Huskies quickly scored again. On the first play of the drive, quarterback Pat Carey hit Tyler Guise for a 30-yard completion to the Cheyney 23-yard line. Quiteh then went those final 23 yards to make it 14-0 with 6:12 left in the first period. In the second quarter, Carey threw two touchdown passes, one a 62-yard completion to Kyle Fisher and the other a 20yard scoring strike to Cory Stiger. Bloomsburg closed out the scoring when Dan Fisher hit a 36-yard field goal, his 10th of the season, for a 31-0 lead at the break. The 10 field goals for Fisher tied the school single-season record set by Chris Mingrone in 1986. Cheyney got the board on its first series of the second half when John Newman scored on a four-yard run to make it 31-7. Bloomsburg make it 38-7 on its first possession of the half when Codie Butler capped a 10-play, 51-yard drive with a fouryard run. Later, Bloomsburg’s Matt Wenrich scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 15-yard run and defensive back Drew Siegfried returned a fumble 32 yards for his first career score. Cheyney added a 28-yard scoring pass from Chris Anderson to Dominic Crowell for the game’s final score in the fourth to make the final 52-14. Quiteh, who did not carry the ball in the second half of the game, finished with 12 carries for 122 yards and went over 1,000 yards for the season, the 13th time a Bloomsburg runner has topped 1,000 yards in a season. Quiteh now has 1,040 yards rushing for the season. Carey finished 5-6 for 126 yards and two scores.
