QUICK SIX
- The Huskies defense has generated 15 turnovers, more than any other Division II team. - Only one team across all divisions (FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III) has generated more turnovers – North Carolina A&T of FCS (16). - While Bloomsburg is +11 in turnover margin and ranks first in the nation in that category, Shippensburg has a -5 turnover margin. - Bloomsburg is seeking its first win over Shippensburg since Oct. 15, 2011 – 38-18 at Redman Stadium. - Bloomsburg looks to start 4-0 for the fourth straight season. - Lawrence Elliott leads the nation in punt return average – 30.2 yards in five returns.
THE GAME
Bloomsburg and Shippensburg renew their long-standing rivalry on Saturday inside Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium, meeting on the Huskies’ home turf for the second consecutive year. While the Huskies have won their first three games, Shippensburg will look to erase the sting of a 5634 loss to California (PA) at home last Saturday. That contest saw its share of offense as the two teams accounted for 1,174 yards of combined total offense with Cal racking up a whopping 660 yards while Ship finished with 514. Turnovers will be an issue to watch – Bloomsburg has been dominant in turnover margin thus far in 2014 to the tune of a +11 total, best in the nation, while Shippensburg is at the opposite end of the spectrum with a -5 margin, including three turnovers last Saturday. While Bloomsburg has forced four or more turnovers out of opponents in every game so far, Shippensburg has turned the ball over at least twice in each game.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday marks the 79th meeting in the series between the two rivals, with Shippensburg owning a 45-33 all-time lead. The Raiders have owned the rivalry in recent years, scoring a pair of wins in 2012 at home – 49-42 in the regular season and a 58-20 win in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs. Last year, Shippensburg spoiled Bloomsburg’s 8-0 start to the year with a 34-18 win on Halloween Night. The Huskies, however, own a 21-18 edge all time in 39 games played on campus at Bloomsburg. The Huskies defense has generated four or more turnovers in every game this season.

ABOUT SHIPPENSBURG • Senior wide receiver Trevor Harman set the Shippensburg records for career receiving yards (3,671) and career points in Week 2 vs. Edinboro. In career points, he passed Ship alum John Kuhn (2004) who currently plays for the Green Bay Packers • Harman needs seven receptions to set the PSAC career record for career catches, a record of 261 currently held by Lock Haven’s Jon Spinosa (1992-95). Mike Lelko of Bloomsburg had 229 receptions with the Huskies - the PSAC, however, also credits stats from NCAA playoff games held prior to 2002 which BU does not account for due to NCAA statistics policies at that time. Counting his 33 catches in the 2000 Huskies NCAA playoff run, the PSAC considers Lelko to have 262 catches • Junior Chris Lawshe (69-112-8 TD, 3 INT, 828 yards) and redshirt freshman Ryan Zapoticky (18-31-2 TD, 1 INT, 183 yards) have each seen time under center this year, taking the tall task of replacing Harlon Hill-winning quarterback Zach Zulli (10,988 career passing yards), who threw for 466 yards vs. Bloomsburg last year • Shippensburg scored the most points in the PSAC over the past three years (2011-13) with 1,431, averaging 40.9 points per game • Shippensburg returned all but two starters on offense and six starters on defense from last year • The Raiders scored 29 points or more all but twice last year – losses at Shepherd (0 points) and vs. IUP (21) and have tallied 34 or more points in all three games this season LAST MEETING The last time these two teams met was under the bright lights of national television on Halloween Night. After a scoreless first quarter, Shippensburg seized a 13-point lead at halftime before the Huskies broke through for a field goal in the third quarter. Shippensburg answered 32 seconds later for another touchdown and a 20-3 lead. Bloomsburg mounted a rally effort, cutting the deficit to 20-10 with 9:07 left in the third, but Shippensburg’s passing attack would not relent as quarterback Zach Zulli threw for 466 yards and five scores while Trevor Harman caught 12 passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns. Sheldon Mayer had six receptions for 244 yards and two scores. The Huskies had entered that game ranked No. 5 in the nation. It remains the only game under head coach Paul Darragh in which BU has been held scoreless at halftime. NEXT GAME Bloomsburg returns to the road next weekend to battle Cheyney at 1 p.m. The Huskies have won 24 straight games over the Wolves.

HUSKIES TAKE PSAC EAST DEFENSIVE HONORS
} The Bloomsburg defense has
been stellar through the start of the season with the Huskies earning PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week honors three straight weeks. This week, senior cornerback DJ Robinson earns the honor after his interception return for a touchdown gave the Huskies a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Senior defensive tackle Shawn Mitchell earned the accolades this week after playing a key role in two crucial turnovers forced by the Huskies defense. Mitchell picked up an interception on the first play of overtime which set up BU for the game-winning field goal. He also recorded a fumble recovery which set up a Huskies third quarter scoring drive. In Week 1, senior linebacker Justin Shirk finished with nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a sack. Five of his tackles were solo stops.
PRESEASON RANKINGS The Huskies were nationally-ranked in a number of preseason polls. Bloomsburg ranks No. 24 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25 and No. 25 in the D2Football.com poll. The Huskies also stood No. 17 in The Sporting News preseason Top 25 and were slotted No. 23 by Lindy’s Sports. RANKED AGAIN National recognition among the Division II pollsters is nothing new for the Huskies. With their Top 25 rankings this season, Bloomsburg has now been ranked in at least one national Top 25 poll since the 2000 season. The Huskies have been ranked in every AFCA Top 25 since October 11, 2010 – a span of 48 consecutive polls. LUCKY SEVEN Week 1’s win at Stonehill marked the seventh time in head coach Paul Darragh’s head coaching tenure that the Huskies have allowed 14 points or less. MOVIN’ ON UP Bloomsburg jumped forward in both national NCAA Division II polls this week, advancing three spots to No. 13 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25.
BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES ELLIOTT PACES THE NATION Sophomore return man Lawrence Elliott Jr. has continued to shine this season after taking second team All-PSAC East honors last year as a true freshman. Elliott amassed 97 all-purpose yards in Week 2 vs. Cal and posted 147 last week at Mercyhurst including a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown, the second of his career. His first punt return for a touchdown came at home vs. Millersville on Oct. 12, 2013 (73 yards).
Starting Experience
His 30.2 yards per punt return this season is the best in the nation, easily surpassing the 25.5 average of Mary’s Elby Pope which ranks second. Next highest in the PSAC is Colin Kimball of Mercyhurst at 13.6.

Last season vs. Shippensburg, Elliott was one of the bright spots of a sour Halloween night as he finished with a school record 36.6 yards per kickoff return average on five kick returns including a career-long return of 86 yards. MATEO CLIMBS THE CHARTS With his third straight 100-yard outing, a 117yard performance at Mercyhurst in Week 3, Eddie Mateo passed Tom Martin (1985-87; 2,476 yards) for ninth place in Huskies career rushing yardage all-time. Arrastene Henry (1998-2001) is next in line at 2,665 yards. Seven players have rushed for 3,000 or more yards in a Huskies uniform. TAKING IT TO THE HOUSE Bloomsburg had three touchdowns from defense and special teams in its 38-22 win at Mercyhurst in Week 3. That total represented a tie for the most touchdowns on returns in a single game over the last 20 years. Bloomsburg had three interceptions returned for touchdowns in a 50-39 win over East Stroudsburg on Oct. 31, 1998. The last time Bloomsburg had two interceptions returned for a score in the same game was Oct. 11, 2003, a 50-7 win vs. Millersville.

LABADIE HAS DAY TO REMEMBER Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Bill LaBadie likely won’t soon forget the Week 3 win at Mercyhurst as the first-year player recorded his first career interception and made the most of it, returning it 41 yards for a touchdown. The play sparked a span of three turnovers generated in less than three minutes as the Huskies rallied from a 14-0 deficit.

His first INT return for a score came in the 2012 season opener at Stonehill and spanned 28 yards. IN ELITE COMPANY The run of success for the Huskies over the past 15 years is nearly unparalleled in college football. Bloomsburg has won seven or more games in 15 consecutive seasons – a streak that is impressive at any level. Only four schools in the divisions of NCAA (FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III) have a longer streak of seven or more victories – Florida State and Virginia Tech in the FBS; Northwest Missouri in Division II and Mount Union in Division III. The 15-year streak is also a PSAC record, surpassing the previous mark of 13 straight years set by IUP from 1984-1996. RIGHT WHERE THEY WANT THEM There has been a common theme in all three games this season – Bloomsburg has battled back from an early deficit to win the first three contests. At Stonehill, Bloomsburg trailed 7-0 early and 7-3 late in the third before rallying for a 24-7 win. Against Cal, the Vulcans led 3-0 until the final seconds before halftime. At Mercyhurst, the Lakers led 14-0 in the second quarter before the Huskies battled back to lead 18-14 at intermission. In fact, Bloomsburg has not scored in the first quarter yet this year. THE TREND CONTINUES The Huskies have scored 14 or more points in 51 straight games, a school record. The previous high was 33 straight from 1994-97. WELCOME BACK EDDIE Running back Eddie Mateo made his return to the team for this fall and has rushed for over 100 yards in all three games thus far on the season. Mateo, who ranks ninth all-time in BU rushing, enters the Shippensburg game fourth in the PSAC with 328 yards rushing on the year - an average 109.3 yards per game. Only Shamar Green of Slippery Rock (619 yards); Brock Jones of Gannon (438) and Blair Brooks of Shippensburg (348) have more yards thus far in the PSAC. ROOKIES DEBUT UP FRONT The Huskies had a different look than in previous years when they debuted Week 1 at Stonehill as three players made their first collegiate starts on the offensive line. Christian Whiteside (LG), Nick Reed (RG) and John Garland (RT) all started for the first time, helping pave the way for the Huskies to finish with 211 yards rushing and the line also did not allow a sack. FINLEY MAKES MOST OF OPPORTUNITY Damin Finley made the most of his first career start in Week 1 at Stonehill. Starting in place of senior D.J. Robinson at cornerback, Finley caused two turnovers – first he delivered a forced fumble and fumble recovery on the first play from scrimmage by the Skyhawks. Later in the first quarter, he made a nifty tip and interception on a deep ball attempt from Stonehill. He finished the game with a career-high seven tackles. WINNING VS. THE WEST Bloomsburg has been dominant in PSAC crossover contests over the past 15 years. Since 1999, the Huskies are 45-14 vs. PSAC West teams and are 24-5 against Western foes at Redman Stadium.

Jahri Evans (‘06) continues to be a stalwart at right tackle for the New Orleans Saints, again serving as a starter in front of quarterback Drew Brees. Evans, a fourth round pick of the Saints in 2006, is a fivetime Pro Bowl selection and considered one of the NFL’s best at his position. In 2011 he was named as one of the 100 Greatest Players in the NFL and won a Super Bowl ring with the Saints in 2009.
RECORD-SETTING 2013 The 2013 season was one for the record books in terms of offense for the Huskies. Bloomsburg finished the year with the most points scored in school history (474) and the most-ever yards of total offense (5,895). The Huskies also compiled 11 30-point games and recorded 500 or more yards of total offense eight times in 2013, both school records. The Huskies also ran for 350+ yards in a game six times last year, breaking the old record of four set in 2004. BUCKING THE TREND While much of football has shifted to a pass-happy offensive attack, the Huskies are finding more success than ever with their tried and true rushing game. Bloomsburg has posted the top two rushing seasons in PSAC history back-to-back – 2012 (3,789 yards) and 2013 (3,762 yards). Bloomsburg averaged 313.5 yards per game on the ground last fall.
Defensive end Larry Webster became the second-highest NFL Draft pick in school history this past May when he was selected in the fourth round (136th overall) by the Detroit Lions. He had 13.5 sacks in 2012 and 12.5 in 2013 for the Huskies. Webster made the Lions’ 53-man roster and was active for the first time in Week 3 but did not play. Matt Feiler, who like Webster was an AllAmerican for the Huskies in 2013, was signed as a free agent following the draft by the Houston Texans. Feiler, an offensive tackle, is currently a member of the Texans’ practice squad.

HUSKIES PICKED THIRD IN PSAC EAST PRESEASON POLL
} Defending conference champion
Bloomsburg ranked third in the PSAC preseason rankings. It marks the 19th straight season that the Huskies have ranked in the top three of the Eastern Division preseason coaches poll. PSAC EAST PRESEASON COACHES POLL 1. West Chester (7) 2. East Stroudsburg (1) 3. Bloomsburg 4. Shippensburg 5. Kutztown 6. Lock Haven 7. Millersville 8. Cheyney PSAC WEST PRESEASON COACHES POLL 1. IUP (5) 2. California (3) 3. Slippery Rock 4. Mercyhurst 5. Gannon 6. Edinboro 7. Clarion 8. Seton Hill
THIS TIME THEY COUNT Under new rules adopted by the PSAC for this season in all sports, all mandated conference matchups will count toward divisional standings. As such, the Huskies PSAC crossover contests against Western Division members California (PA) and Mercyhurst will go toward BU’s PSAC East standings. The lone exception will be the final week of the season - the PSAC slate ends the season with a week of crossovers including the PSAC Championship Game, but those games will not count toward the divisional standings as the title game will be set following the penultimate week of the season. ROAD SUCCESS The Huskies have not been afraid of travel in recent years, posting a 25-7 record away from home since 2009 (.781). Bloomsburg won all five of its road games last season and have won seven consecutive regular season road games dating to 2012. GROUND AND POUND The Huskies have had at least 30 rushing attempts in 51 straight games, dating back to Oct. 31, 2009 - a record that nearly was broken in Week 9 of 2013 when Bloomsburg ran exactly 30 times vs. Shippensburg and again in Week 3 of 2014 when the Huskies once again rushed exactly 30 times at Mercyhurst, a 38-22 win. RUNNING TO DAYLIGHT Entering this week’s game, Bloomsburg has an on-going streak of 35 straight games with at least one rushing touchdown – the last time the Huskies failed to run for a score came on Sept. 15, 2011 at IUP. PUTTING UP THE POINTS The Huskies are 107-3 when scoring 40 points all-time. Bloomsburg tied the school record of seven games with 40+points in 2013 (2005, 2007, 2012, 2013).

HUSKIES WORK OVERTIME Bloomsburg needed overtime to defeat California, 24-21, in Week 2. Needing an extra period has been a rarity for the Huskies in recent years the Cal win was the first overtime game for Bloomsburg since a 10-7 loss in OT vs. Gannon at home in 2009. Bloomsburg’s last overtime win at home before Week 2 was a 35-28 victory at home over Kutztown in 2003. BU also played an OT game at East Stroudsburg in 2005, a 31-24 win for the Huskies. WORKING WELL FROM BEHIND The Huskies have spotted their competition points in each of the first three games. In Week 1, Stonehill used a 48-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead in the second quarter and led 7-3 at half before the Huskies rallied late in the third. Bloomsburg again trailed near halftime in Week 2, falling behind 3-0 before scoring on a fumbled punt attempt by Cal with 45 seconds remaining in the first half. BU fell behind 14-0 in the second quarter at Mercyhurst before scoring 18 points in HITTING THE CENTURY MARK Bloomsburg’s run defense has been strong against opponents in recent seasons. Just one player rushed for over 100 yards against the Huskies in 2013 - Rondell White of West Chester in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. White also ran for 100+ yards against the Huskies in 2012. Brandon Brown-Dukes of Mercyhurst joined White in the two-man 100-yard rusher group vs. BU the past two years when he finished with 102 yards on 23 carries in Week 3 this fall. BU TO HOST PA WOUNDED WARRIOR DAY - SEPT. 27 The Huskies will pay tribute to the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors with their next home game, Sept. 27 vs. Shippensburg. Donations will be accepted with all proceeds benefitting PA Wounded Warriors. All military members in uniform or with ID will receive free admission to the game. tps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8IjyohQnRQ&feature=youtu.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
@GOBUHUSKIES • #UNLEASHED
FROM THE ARCHIVES By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger Saturday’s game with Mercyhurst was the first time in 117 seasons and 1029 football games in Bloomsburg history that a contest ended with a score of 38-22. It was the fifth time in the last four years and 15th time overall the Huskies have scored 38 points in a game, winning all but last year’s playoff game with West Chester, a 40-38 defeat. The three touchdowns on returns Bloomsburg scored on Saturday tied the most in a single game over the past 20 years. On October 31, 1998, three interceptions were returned for touchdowns versus East Stroudsburg in a 50-39 home victory. The only other games during that time that two interceptions were brought back for scores were on October 11, 2003 (a 50-7 win at home against Millersville), and a 28-21 loss at Shippensburg on September 12, 1998. The Huskies now have a record of 45-14 versus the PSAC West over the past 15 years, going 24-5 at home and 21-9 on the road. Bloomsburg has won its first three games for the fourth consecutive season, sixth time in the last seven years, seventh in the past ten and 27th time in program history. In the previous 26 seasons, the Huskies ended up with a winning record 24 times. Paul Darrah now has a 13-2 record in 15 games as head coach, tying the best start in program history with Robert Redman, who began his tenure in 1947. Only four other coaches had a winning record after 15 games: Pete Adrian (1986) and Jack Yohe (1952), both 10-4-1, Albert Aldinger (1894) 9-6, and John Weimer (1911) 7-5-3.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
S E A S O N
Paul Darragh was named head coach of Bloomsburg University on Dec. 6, 2013 after being appointed as interim head coach in February 2013. Overall he will be starting his 18th season with the Huskies in 2014. During the 2013 season Darragh led the Huskies to a 10-2 record, a PSAC championship and a berth in the NCAA playoffs as part of the strongest season for any first-year head coach in school history. Following the season he was honored as PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year. Under Darragh’s leadership, the Huskies had four All-Americans including Harlon Hill Awardwinning running back Franklyn Quiteh who was honored as the top player in Division II. Bloomsburg also had national finalists for the Cliff Harris Award (top small school defensive player, Larry Webster), Gene Upshaw Award (lineman of the year, Brian Clarke) and Fred Mitchell Award (top place-kicker, Danny Fisher). Following the season, defensive end Larry Webster became the sixth player in Bloomsburg history to be selected in the NFL Draft as he was picked in the fourth round by the Detroit Lions. Darragh previously served as the Huskies’ defensive coordinator for 16 years under legendary head coach Danny Hale. Under Darragh’s leadership the Huskies’ defense has ranked in the top-half of the PSAC in total defense seven of the past 11 seasons, including back-to-back second place finishes in 2000 and 2001 and a second place in 2009. The Huskies have also ranked among the best in the PSAC in run defense finishing first or second five times, including second in two of the last four seasons. The 2009 Huskies finished third nationally in scoring defense (13.36/game), pacing the PSAC. BU also led the conference in sacks, ranking 14th nationally (3.09 per game). In 2010 the Huskies were eighth in Division II in rushing defense (85.38 yards per game). Overall under Darragh’s leadership, the Bloomsburg defense finished in the top-15 in NCAA Division II six times since the 2000 season. Darragh has also coached 58 first team All-PSAC performers, 11 All-Americans and two PSAC East Defensive Players of the Year in Anthony Smith (2009) and Mike Varanavage (2010).
