MATCH UP: Despite only winning three games so far this season, West Chester continues to hang on near the top of the PSAC East standings. This week, Bloomsburg looks to avenge a three-game losing streak to the Golden Rams and maintain its unbeaten status in conference play. THE HEAD COACHES: Huskies coach Danny Hale (West Chester ‘68) is in his 18th year at the helm of the Bloomsburg program. Having achieved his 150th win this season against Shippensburg, Hale has a 150-50-1 (.749) record and the most wins in school history. For his career, Hale is 190-63-1 and his winning percentage of .750 is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in Division II and top 20 D-II coaches all-time. Hale has led BU to six playoff appearances, including the latest in 2008. He has been honored as the PSAC East Coach of the Year 10 times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine times, and was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year following the 2000 season. Head Coach Bill Zwaan is in his 8th season with the Red Raiders, having amassed a 64-30 (.681) record at West Chester. Previously, Zwaan led Division III Widener to a 54-14 ledger over six seasons, making two NCAA tournament appearances and in 2001, recording the Pride’s first undefeated regular season in twenty years. Zwaan also assisted at Cincinnati and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. PSAC EAST: With a spot in the PSAC Championship on the line, the playoffs have come early for the East’s top teams. The next three weeks will feature a number of matches between division leaders, including this week’s battle of the unbeatens--C.W. Post at Kutztown.

EXTENDING THE RECORD: After kicking his 11th field goal of the season last weekend at Shippensburg, redshirt freshman Dan Fisher is now in exclusive possession of the Bloomsburg single-season record for field goals completed. The record of 10 was first set in 1986 when Chris Mingrone was successful on 10 of his 20 attempts. Fisher also broke the single-game record (previously three, set six times). SCOUTING WEST CHESTER: The passing game has been key for the Golden Rams, whose 264.0 yards in the air per game are second-best in the PSAC, trailing only Kutztown (269.4). The Huskies’ league-best rushing offense (248.6 yards/ game) may have an easy time with West Chester’s second-worst rush defense in the league (allowing 183.7 yards/game). The Golden Rams have also had trouble stopping the pass game and are second to last in pass efficiency defense (159.8); compare to Bloomsburg’s (93.0). Individually, sophomore Matt Mattei enters this weekend as the team’s primary quarterback and has thrown for over 1,300 yards in his first season. Redshirt freshman Sean McCartney has also seen action and was PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week following his first career start: a 444-yard performance in the team’s double-overtime win over Shippensburg. Their favorite target, Dan DePalma, averages just under five receptions per game and is currently No. 3 in the PSAC in receiving yardage (84.2 per game). Running backs D’Andre Webb and Jackson Fagan provide West Chester with the versatility of a strong running game. Defensively, Morty Hoey leads West Chester with 47 tackles and defensive back John O’Donnell was Defensive Player of the Week after making six tackles and one interception in the team’s win over East Stroudsburg.

Last Meeting West Chester 30, #10 Bloomsburg 14 October 31, 2009 WEST CHESTER--After a disappointing loss to Shippensburg on October 24, the Bloomsburg University football dropped its second straight game, falling 30-14 to West Chester University. The Huskies forced West Chester to go three and out on its first series, the Huskies took over at their own-42 yard line. On second and nine, quarterback Dan Latorre connected with Cory Stiger on a 57-yard touchdown strike, putting Bloomsburg on top 7-0. West Chester responded on its next possession and put together a 11-play, 77-yard drive capped by a one-yard run from Lee Hopkins to tie the game at 7-7. The Huskies regained the lead at 14-7 on their next drive, moving 60-yards in eight plays, including a 35-yard completion to Ben Weaber. Latorre connected with Stiger on a seven-yard pass for the go-ahead score. The Golden Rams tied the game at 14-14 on its ensuing drive as quarterback Joe Wright hit Dan DePalma with a 38-yard scoring pass. Later in the second period, the Golden Rams needed just eight plays to get a four-yard run from D’Andre Webb to grab the lead at 21-14. On Bloomsburg’s next drive Latorre was intercepted by Kevin Garland, and after driving to the Bloomsburg four-yard line and facing fourth down, Wright hit DePalma with a fouryard pass for a 28-14 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Huskies drove into West Chester territory four times, but missed on 32-yard field goal try and fumbled at threeyard line with 12 seconds to play. Latorre finished 18-36 for a career-high 350 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Mike Varanavage made 12 tackles to lead the defense, while Anthony Smith added 11. Bloomsburg West Chester

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Defensive linesman Jarrett Pidgeon received PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week Honors following last weekend’s performance at Shippensburg. Pidgeon led a dominating performance by the Bloomsburg defense that held the Red Raiders to just 93 yards of total offense in a 23-3 win. Pidgeon posted a career-high 10 tackles, nine of them solo, had 3.5 tackles for loss (totaling 11 yards) and one sack. AMONG THE RANKS: After its debut at No. 20 last week, Bloomsburg is the No. 16 team in Division II according to the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll. The Huskies had received votes in six previous weeks of the AFCA survey and join California and Kutztown among the top 25. HITTING 150: With a win over Shippensburg, Bloomsburg Head Coach Danny Hale recorded his 150th win with the Huskies. Said Hale on his accomplishment, “Right now, I’m just focused on getting number 151.”

LEADING THE NATION: For the fifth week this season and fourth straight, Franklyn Quiteh, is currently atop the Division II rushing leaderboard. While the lead has tightened, his average of 164.1 yards per game is 13 yards more than runnerup Joe Glendening of Hillsdale (151.0). Across all divisions, Quiteh has more rushing yards (1,149) than any other NCAA athlete, leading University of Michigan’s Denard Robinson (1,096) and Anthony Ambers (1,114) of D-III’s Greenville College.
FROM THE ARCHIVES By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger The 36 passing yards by Shippensburg are the fewest allowed by Bloomsburg since Mansfield got 17 in a 31-7 Husky victory in 2006, and the 93 total yards of offense by the Red Raiders are the least since Cheyney had just 55 in Bloomsburg’s 69-0 win in 2004. It was only the fifth time the Husky defense has held an opposing team to less than 100 yards of offense in Coach Hale’s tenure at Bloomsburg. The other games were against Lock Haven in 1996 (87) and 2004 (65), Cheyney in 2004 (55), and Wayne State in 1996 with a total of only 24 yards of offense. The lowest passing total allowed by a Hale coached Bloomsburg team was 9 yards in 25 attempts versus Kutztown in 1997. Danny Hale now has 150 wins as Bloomsburg’s head football coach, three times the total of the second winningest coach, Albert Aldinger, who won 50 games from 1894 to 1905. The Huskies all-time record in 80 Homecoming games since the first one in 1928 is 49-30-1. Their record versus West Chester in those games is 4-8 since 1963, with all four victories under Danny Hale, who is 14-3 at Homecoming. Bloomsburg’s all-time record versus West Chester is 21-46 in 67 games in a series that began in 1925, with a mark of 16-18 at home and 5-28 away. Danny Hale has a record of 12-7 against the Golden Rams, 9-2 at home and 3-5 away.

Last Week #20 BLOOMSBURG 23 - SHIPPENSBURG 3 October 16, 2010 SHIPPENSBURG—Bloomsburg University quarterback Pat Carey threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns and the Huskies defense limited Shippensburg to just 93-yards of total offense as the 20th-ranked Huskies beat Shippensburg 23-3 on Saturday. The win was also the 150th at Bloomsburg for head coach Danny Hale. Bloomsburg scored on the opening drive of the game with Franklyn Quiteh leading the way. Quiteh, Division II’s leading rusher, carried nine times on the drive for 58-yards, including the final three on the way to end zone to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead with 9:49 to play in the period. Shippensburg responded on its second drive of the game moving from the Bloomsburg 48-yard line to the Huskies 8-yard line before the drive stalled. The Red Raiders then settled for a 25-yard field goal from Drew Newcomer to make it 7-3. The Huskies made it 10-3 early in the second half on Daniel Fisher’s record-breaking field goal. Fisher connected on a 43yard field goal, his 11th of the season, breaking the school single-season mark he shared with Chris Mingrone set in 1986. Bloomsburg made it 17-3 right before halftime with the help of a short Shippensburg punt. With the Red Raiders back up to their own 11-yard line and the wind in their face, Shippensburg got off just a 14-yard punt giving Bloomsburg the ball at the Red Raider 25-yard line with 39 seconds left in the half. Carey hit Cory Stiger for six yards to the 19-yard line, then, found Ben Weaber in the end zone for touchdown with 21 seconds left in the half. The third period was scoreless but the story was the play of the Huskies defense holding the Red Raiders to just two first downs in the quarter and 18 yards of offense. The final touchdown of the day for Bloomsburg came early in the fourth period when Carey hit Chris Tressler with a 52-yard touchdown pass with 11:52 left to go in the game. Overall, Carey was 14 of 20 on the day with Stiger catching six passes for 47 yards, while Quiteh finished with 109 yards on 26 carries and the one touchdown. Defensively, the Huskies were dominant after the first period holding the Red Raiders to just 24 yards of total offense over the final three quarters. Shippensburg was also 0-12 in third-down situations for the game and was held without a touchdown for the first time since the 2008 season when the Huskies beat them 21-0. Jarrett Pidgeon led the way with 10 tackles, nine of them solo. He also had 3.5 tackles for loss and one sack in the game. For his efforts, Pidgeon would go on to receive PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week honors.
