2013 Season Preview Last fall brought a season of transition to the Bloomsburg University women’s soccer program as the Huskies came under the watch of first-year head coach Steph Anderson. While the growing pains of installing a new system under new leadership showed in the team’s 6-10-1 record, the Huskies believe last season’s hardships laid the foundation for a new era of BU soccer. “Last year was all about building a new foundation to work off of,” Anderson said. “It was tough at times because we were teaching a completely different system of play. We had to restructure the way we did everything. Last fall was about building that foundation.” Fast forward a year and the Huskies bring a bevy of optimism into the new season. Returning all but two players and with a full season and spring to transition to a possession-oriented system that builds numbers into the attack, Anderson feels the Huskies are ready to hit the ground running. “In the spring it finally clicked. We have a very different look than we did in the past,” Anderson said. “We had a phenomenal spring and I think it was a great springboard for the fall.” FORWARDS Though the Huskies struggled to generate offense last year, it wasn’t for lack of output from Tara Huber. The senior captain was the Huskies’ lone all-conference player a season ago after leading the team with six goals and 14 points as a junior. With 21 career goals Huber stands just two scores away from breaking into the top 10 in school history. “She is one of the best 1-on-1 attackers that I’ve ever seen,” Anderson said. Over the past year, the Huskies have worked to build a system to compliment Huber and provide scoring opportunities for other players. Senior Kyleigh Reckage started 13 matches last year and could play both at forward and midfield as she transitions to a new role. “We anticipate her maybe being a holding forward for us,” Anderson said. “It’s a new role but it fits her skill set. She’s a strong player and we think she can be a target forward for us.” Another senior, Jamie Vaniver saw time in 12 contests a year ago and brings speed to the position to help with high pressure defense. Junior Julia Rios played in 12 games last season and will figure into the Huskies’ attack. Senior Katy Fexa adds depth to the front line with 41 games in maroon and gold under her belt from the past three seasons. Also returning is sophomore Ashley Sanchez who played 14 games and scored a goal in her Huskies debut. 6

Maureen Leis also returns after missing all of last year with an injury. “We think she can help us win balls out of the air and keep possession for us in the attack,” the second-year coach said. Anderson also will look to the speed and potential scoring ability of freshman Jenna Fisher in her Huskies debut. MIDFIELD The midfield positions are up for grabs as the season starts – and it’s a competition Anderson feels will only benefit the Huskies. “It’s going to be an awesome competition at midfield,” she said. “We brought in a couple center mids. Center mid is really the heard and soul of our system. We have three new players competing for those spots.” Returning players include junior Sierra Fortunato and sophomore Stephanie Tuccio. “Both had significant minutes last year and continued to develop tremendously over the spring,” Anderson assessed. Sophomores Taylor Gerstenfield, who started 10 matches last year, and Christine Hollan, who earned eight starts, bring dynamic skill sets allowing the Huskies the option of playing either at midfield or on the backline. Both players also suited up in the Women’s Premier Soccer League over the summer alongside many of the nation’s top players, including a number of Division I players. Anderson looks for production out of freshmen center midfielders Allie Camp and Olivia Falko, two players who have experience playing club soccer together. “We expect both to raise the level right away and compete for significant time. They have chemistry built in from playing together in the past which is half the battle at that position.” Megan Carroll returns from an ACL injury and showed promise in the spring. “She showed tremendous skill,” Anderson said. “I don’t think we even understand how much she can impact yet because she hadn’t played in a year and her touch was tremendous straight away being back.”
2013 Season Preview Junior Hailey Vonasek is another defensive-minded center mid who will round out the Husky attack. DEFENSE The Huskies return nearly all of its backline from a year ago. Captains Lauren Kreglow and Kelsey Holtz played big minutes last year. “We’re hoping to move Kelsey to an outside back to get on the ball a bit more and involved in the attack,” Anderson said. “I expect both players to be big in terms of leadership roles. They’re two great players who are major factors in our game.” Senior Brooke Mohney started 12 contests with two goals last year and could convert from the forward position. Fellow senior Jessy Shober made 13 starts with a pair of scores and returns to play outside back. Anderson also praised the improvement of junior Nicole Updegrove. Freshman Carrie Kupferschmidt “has the size and intelligence to be really good” at center back Anderson assessed and will be able to learn from the senior leadership. Brooke Etter transfers from Mansfield after seeing significant time as a freshman two years ago. Another newcomer, freshman Shannon Cessna will also feature into the outside back picture. GOALKEEPERS
year. Victoria is coming in and has a couple inches on everyone and we were vulnerable to the high ball a year ago. All three are competitive players. We don’t know who’s going to win that battle. The competition is going to be tremendous. They’re all kids who welcome the competition; it will help them get to the next level. It will be a fun process to watch to see how they help each other become better during the year.” OVERALL With a new style fully embraced by the new and returning players, the Huskies aim to make bid for a return to the postseason. “The PSAC is notorious for playing a direct style of soccer,” Anderson added. “We are going to kind of flip that on its head. We’re going to add an element of possession coming from our center mids, our outside backs and our target forward. We’ll be a multi-dimensional team and a threat from several different positions. “We have the pieces in place. The goal is to not only get to the post-season but really compete once we get there.” Bloomsburg opens its season on Sept. 5 at Gannon before beginning its home slate by hosting Mercyhurst on Sept. 7.
Another battle will be forged in net this fall as a trio of net minders vies for time. Junior Danielle Fiorelli started 16 matches and recorded seven shutouts with 100 saves to go along with a 1.66 goals against average last season and returns this season. Also returning is sophomore Shelby Koch who saw time in a pair of contests. Freshman Victoria Albert also figures to be in the mix, adding a bit of height to the net. “We’re going to have a tremendous battle at the goalkeeper spot this year,” Anderson stated. “Danielle did well for us last

A native of Wallsend, England, Bannister was a member of the Northcumberland County U-18s, scoring a club-record 17 goals in two seasons, before coming to the United States to play collegiately at Division I Loyola University in Maryland. At Loyola, Bannister started 69 games while scoring 40 career goals with 29 assists for a total of 109 points including 13 gamewinning goals. He led all NCAA Division I freshmen in scoring during his first season with the Greyhounds in 2007, pacing the team with 13 goals and seven assists to earn MAAC Rookie of the Year and second team All-MAAC honors. Bannister earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors following his sophomore season and was named to the All-District II first team after his junior year. He was named a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Finalist in 2010 and was also named first team All-MAAC as well as captured ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America second team as well as All-District II first team accolades for his success on the field and in the classroom. He was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week for three straight weeks and was enjoying a stellar senior season before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Despite having his senior year cut short, he still led the Greyhounds in nearly every offensive category, including points (21), goals (10), shots (42) and shots on goal (21). At the time of the injury, Bannister led all Division I players in points per game. He finished his collegiate playing days standing eighth all-time on the Loyola goals list and ranks sixth in points. Following his college career, Bannister was drafted by the Colorado Rapids of the MLS. He then coached youth level teams in his native England.
