PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER INSIDE

GLENFIELD

JULY 2022

MONTHLY NEWS, INFORMATION & ENTERTAINMENT FOR GLENFIELD ANOTHER HURDLE JUMPED

The Neighbourhood Plan is submitted to Blaby District Council BY COUNCILL0R ROY DENNEY

THE FINAL tidied-up version was approved by Glenfield Parish Council in June and formally presented to Blaby. The District Council now check it against the policies of higher authorities and unless there is something found incorrect, it will then be the subject of a further consultation organised by Blaby itself and then there is still to be a submission to an inspector and a formal referendum.

The Club will soon have a summer break and will recommence on 12th September but on 19th September we will be having a special free session to encourage people to come and see what it’s all about.

We would love to welcome you to experience this dancing along with us.

The plan can be inspected on request at the Parish Offices or online but it runs in total to 250 pages

For more information email Geoff at jennyandgeoffweston@ gmail.com or Sue at susan. hodkinson50@gmail.com

As I am a long-standing member of the planning committee at Blaby and the prime mover in creating this plan, I will of course have to step off the committee when this one comes before it. TURN TO PAGE 4 ...>

In support of the St Anne’s Mothers’ Union, the Glenfield Ladies Co-operative Choir gave a Spring concert on a truly glorious and glamorous evening. St Anne’s Hall was filled to capacity and lyrical music filled the air for this sparkling event. Concert goers enjoyed a tea and cake supper accompanied by romantic favourites and modern 20th century classics with an overall theme of rainbows and the sky. From old-time favourites such as Fly Me to the Moon to Eric Whittaker’s Seal Lullaby, the music ranged from jazz to old English folk songs, all melded together with piano and flute solos from virtuoso performer, Ruben. Piano accompaniment throughout was by the wonderful Mary Starie.

DID YOU KNOW that English Country Dancing takes place most Mondays at the Memorial Hall from 7.30pm until 9.30pm?

We have callers who tell us what to do for each dance and you don’t need a partner.

You may think this is bureaucracy gone mad and I don’t think I need to comment any further but we are one step closer to having some influence over our own affairs as far as planning goes

SUCH A ROMANTIC AFFAIR!

evening at 7.15pm on Monday 12th September in the Methodist Church, Station Road, Glenfield.

All ladies are welcome to come and sing with us.

In the second half there was a surprise audience sing-along to Henry Mancini’s Moon River from the film ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s‘ which raised the roof, whilst the finale of Bridge Over Troubled Waters brought tears to the eyes of quite a few concert-goers. “Everyone has put so much effort in and I’m so proud of them all!” said Choirmaster, Laura Freeman after an impromptu encore of Lullaby of Birdland.

After a raffle and cake sale to end the fundraiser, Choir Treasurer, Hilary Allen, thanked the organisers from St Anne’s Mothers’ Union and everyone who took part, sharing the tremendous news that the evening had raised in excess of £700.00. Laura added “We will definitely be back for another Concert. Don’t miss it!“ The Choir will be taking a break over the Summer but will be back for a recruitment

Pekin Robin may be colonising British gardens AS REPORTED in the Guardian, a brightly coloured subtropical songbird from Asia could colonise Britain’s gardens and change the dawn chorus for ever. The highly invasive red-billed leiothrix could threaten native bird populations, particularly competing with garden birds such as the robin and blackbird, researchers say. Early signs suggest this little bird – olive green with a bright red beak and yellow throat – may already be establishing itself in gardens and woodlands in southern parts of the country. The main cluster of sightings is around Wiltshire and Somerset, with a handful of reports coming from farther afield in south Wales, Merseyside and Kent, according to a new paper published in the journal Ibis. Also known as pekin robins in the caged bird trade, it is likely these populations have escaped from captivity, but it is not yet known if they are breeding. Despite having a loud and beautiful song (they are also known as the Japanese nightingale), red-billed leothrix populations are elusive and usually go unnoticed for years before they are discovered, and then tend to dramatically increase in number, research from Europe suggests. Unlike robins and blackbirds, which are territorial, red-billed leiothrixes nest communally so they can breed in high densities, becoming extremely populous in small areas.

Golf Course won’t be ‘rewilded’ says council

Wise Words

Concentrate your energies, your thoughts and your capital. The wise man puts all his eggs in one basket and watches the basket. Andrew Carnegie

AS REPORTED in the Leicester Mercury, a walker sent an email to the City Council to say thank you for leaving a disused golf course to become overgrown because it would help wildlife, only to be told it was only in that state due to a broken mower. Walkers over the Western Golf Course in Leicester had been enjoying its more natural appearance after the usual mowing of the grass stopped earlier this year.

for a fully fitted electric garage door. WAS £1,354 INCLUDING VAT.

The course has since been cut, much to the disappointment of those who use it as a green escape from the busy city. Steve Walters, who has walked the course every day for the last 26 years has long been campaigning for it to be kept as a wildlife haven. The course was earmarked for a 446-home development in Leicester’s draft local plan – a document which sets out the land that can be built on. Mr Walters told the Leicester Mercury he would much rather the course be left to nature than subjected to this regimen of mowing. “We had a touch of [mowing] during January or late last year and then nothing,” he said. “And we thought ‘great!’ “I think it’s a small thing to ask to be honest. If you’re going to build all over it at some point, okay we’ll lose out, but at least nature would have been able to enjoy it for a few more years without it being mown to death.” However, a city council spokesperson said they will not be rewilding the site, saying they have ‘a duty to maintain it’. He added that the council strives to balance necessary maintenance with the need for natural habitats.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN: from page 1 Councillor Nick Chapman also provided local knowledge in the production of this plan and sat in on many of the meetings with our consultants so he has a similar problem in that he is Vice Chairman of Planning at Blaby Despite neither of us likely to be able to vote for this plan I am happy that it will stand up to scrutiny and be accepted by our colleagues I often get asked about planning matters and residents are often upset by decisions, but the room to be flexible is very limited and there is a presumption that applications will be approved unless they fall down on a narrow range of issues. Sometimes a case will fall foul of one policy but be okay under another, as there are situations where local policies conflict with each other. In those cases, it is down to us on the planning committee to balance all the considerations before deciding. Our officers always advise as to whether to approve or not, but we not infrequently disagree with their view and on balance decide not to follow their advice. The rules are complex but there are a few basic tenets which might help you form opinions. We cannot take into account matters which are sometimes raised but are not planning issues, like the perceived loss of property value, ownerships, potential loss of trade or increased competition or the strength or volume of local opposition, loss of a view or opinions about the applicant. Petitions cannot We can though weigh everything from a remarkable wide range of issues all of a similar nature. For example, loss of light or overshadowing, loss of privacy, adequacy of road access/parking/loading/ turning/waste collection, highway safety and traffic generation, noise and bad smells and disturbance resulting from use, contaminated land, destruction of trees, effect on listed buildings, conservation area or archaeological interests, layout and density of buildings, design, appearance and materials, landscaping, local, strategic, regional and national planning policies, nature conservation and biodiversity issues. Then there are issues which are not necessarily material considerations such as disturbance during the construction stages. We cannot turn things down for that reason but if other considerations are finely balanced such matters might tip the balance and one thing we can do is approve, with conditions attached about such matters As you see it is complex and where there is a neighbourhood plan in place, we also have to consider that. From a resident’s point of view though it does mean having a Plan might just tip the balance your way.

PCC Rupert Matthews calls for tougher QUIZ TIME legislation on the use of ‘E-scooters‘ He said: “E-Scooter incidents are rising, presenting a possible danger to pedestrians, users and motorists alike. “That‘s why I am calling on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland‘s MPs to work with me to tackle the problem. “The government continues to relax the rules surrounding the acquisition and use of e-scooters. I would like to see tougher rules surrounding the acquisition and use of e-scooters. We need to safeguard road users. “Leicestershire Police has a robust policy toward e-scooters that aims to prevent incidents and accidents, for which I am grateful. But we cannot become complacent, and we must ensure that the government keeps e-scooters off public roads before more incidents occur. “This is about public safety and road safety. We need to ensure that the upward national trend showing more and more collisions and casualties involving e-scooters cannot be allowed to continue. “I have written to all of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland‘s MPs, urging them to use their influence in Westminster to obtain assurances from the government that action will be taken to minimise the potential dangers of e-scooters on road users, all while benefiting from the accessible and environmentally friendly mode of transportation they offer. “Locally, I want to see MPs join me and Leicestershire Police to ensure that the public and retailers know the risks around e-scooters and how to use, buy and rent them safely and legally.“

Exogenesis: Hybrid Humans By Bruce R. Fenton and Daniella Fenton EXOGENESIS: Hybrid Humans offers a deep dive into the strongest ever scientific evidence that supports the popular belief that Earth has been visited in prehistory, but goes even further, concluding that there is also compelling evidence of alien involvement with the human genome. The broader history of possible extraterrestrial contact is explored alongside a look at current events in the subject of alien disclosure with the result of highlighting evidence of a contact continuum that has continued since the dawn of humanity. The data brought together suggests that the next stage in human evolution may involve the manifestation of full open contact with the visitors in our lifetimes. Exogenesis: Hybrid Humans explores: •

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

FOR PART OF OUR Jubilee Celebrations, the children all got together to share a whole-school picnic, followed by music and fun on the field! It was a lovely way to celebrate this monumental occasion. It was wonderful to see the children dress ‚posh‘ for the day and to see all the art work they created.

Sea Life Centre Visit

Outdoor theatre experience at Fosse Meadows SEE TALES from Beatrix Potter and William Shakespeare come to life in a one-of-a-kind family theatre experience at Fosse Meadows Country Park coming this summer break. Theatre in the Park brings the magic of the theatre out into the open air, with two special performances to choose from running on Thursday 21 July. A brand-new adaptation of two of Beatrix Potter’s most popular stories - The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny - will begin at 2.30pm, the perfect event for families during the summer break. Tickets for this production are £12 per adult and £8 per child. William Shakespeare’s classic, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, will then begin at 6.30pm, running into the evening. Tickets are just £15 for an adult and £10 per child. Visitors can expect a range of local food and drink stalls, including Fosse Meadow’s very own Mason’s II Cappo Del Caffee Coffee Van. Active Arts will also be putting together activities for children to enjoy during the afternoon. Councillor Sharon Coe, Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing, Community Engagement and Business Support, said: “Theatre in the Park is an exciting new way to bring arts and culture to the district and we can’t wait to welcome people to the experience. It’s the perfect summer holiday event for the whole family.”

THE YEAR ONE children visited the Sea life Centre on Tuesday. They saw rays which we have been learning about and even had the opportunity to stroke a starfish! They had a wonderful day and we were very proud of the children‘s behaviour.

With tickets selling fast and a limited number available, make sure to book in as soon as possible. Find out more about each show hosted by Quantum Theatre. Parking in Fosse Meadows’ car parks will also be free for attendees across the event day.

African Drumming Performance

CHILDREN FROM Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 took part in an African Drumming assembly, performing for friends and family to celebrate their musical achievements at the end of the year. The children’s determination and effort was clear to see as they provided a wonderful performance, demonstrating real concentration. Well done Drummers!

Year 6 Police Visit

YEAR 6 WERE visited by PC Burton - a member of the Metropolitan Police force in London. She explained her role as a Police Constable and talked about the day-to-day life of an officer. The children were surprised to discover that some of the key characteristics needed to be a PC were the same as the values that we work hard to demonstrate in school every day, such as: teamwork, cooperation, respect and integrity. At the end of the talk, children were able to try on PC Burton’s equipment including her hat, protective vest and belt (complete with baton and handcuffs)!

CHUMS How a Tiny Caste of Oxford Tories Took Over the UK By Simon Kuper BORIS JOHNSON, Michael Gove, David Cameron, George Osborne, Theresa May, Dominic Cummings, Daniel Hannan, Jacob Rees-Mogg: Whitehall is swarming with old Oxonians. They debated each other in tutorials, ran against each other in student elections, and attended the same balls and black tie dinners. They aren’t just colleagues - they are peers, rivals, friends. And, when they walked out of the world of student debates onto the national stage, they brought their university politics with them. Eleven of the fifteen postwar British prime ministers went to Oxford. In Chums, Simon Kuper traces how the rarefied and privileged atmosphere of this narrowest of talent pools - and the friendships and worldviews it created - shaped modern Britain. A damning look at the university clique-turned-Commons majority that will blow the doors of Westminster wide open and change the way you look at our democracy forever.

Focus on vehicles and not just their lights, as fraudsters often disable brake lights.

Know the signs of a ‘Crash for Cash’

‘Crash for Cash’ scams that involve innocent drivers are typically carried out by fraudsters who slam on their brake at busy junctions and roundabouts so the driver behind cannot stop in time. Sometimes this is done with an accomplice in a second vehicle driving erratically in front, so they can divert the victim’s suspicions by saying the driver in front (who has since fled the scene) caused the accident.

The driver or their passengers appear to be unphased after the collision.

They are also known to encourage other drivers to pull out of side roads or wait until they creep forward for a better view, only to crash into the side of them.

Avoiding ‘Crash for Cash’ scams KEEP A GOOD DISTANCE - Always keep a good distance from the vehicle in front. According to the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) the time required to safely stop is: 2 seconds in dry conditions. 4 seconds in wet conditions. 20 seconds in icy or snowy conditions.

The driver or their passengers appear to exaggerate injuries. Pre-written insurance information is handed over.

Reporting ‘Crash for Cash’ scams Note as much information as possible about the driver, passengers and circumstances of the collision. This can include written info, pictures, dashcam footage and noting CCTV in the area. Make sure to exchange insurance details as legally required and never confront the other driver and/or their passengers as it could place people in harms’ way. If you have evidence of a ‚Crash for Cash‘ scam, it should be reported to the IFB’s confidential Cheatline service at insurancefraudbureau. org/cheatline or 0800 422 0421. It should also be reported to the police via Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040.”

America Before: The Key to Earth‘s Lost Civilization By Graham Hancock

WAS AN ADVANCED civilization lost to history in the global cataclysm that ended the last Ice Age? Graham Hancock, the internationally bestselling author, has made it his life’s work to find out -- and in America Before, he draws on the latest archaeological and DNA evidence to bring his quest to a stunning conclusion. We’ve been taught that North and South America were empty of humans until around 13,000 years ago - amongst the last great landmasses on earth to have been settled by our ancestors. But new discoveries have radically reshaped this long-established picture and we know now that the Americas were first peopled more than 130,000 years ago - many tens of thousands of years before human settlements became established elsewhere.

In the process, from the Mississippi Valley to the Amazon rainforest, he reveals that ancient ‘New World’ cultures share a legacy of advanced scientific knowledge and sophisticated spiritual beliefs with supposedly unconnected ‘Old World’ cultures. Have archaeologists focussed for too long only on the ‘Old World’ in their search for the origins of civilization while failing to consider the revolutionary possibility that those origins might in fact be found in the ‘New World’? America Before: The Key to Earth’s Lost Civilisation is the culmination of everything that millions of readers have loved in Hancock’s body of work over the past decades, namely a mind-dilating exploration of the mysteries of the past, amazing archaeological discoveries and profound implications for how we lead our lives today.

Worried more about money than Covid FOUR IN TEN of us are now more worried about our energy bills than about catching Covid.

That is the finding of a recent study by University College London (UCL). Dr Daisy Fancourt, of UCL’s Institute of Epidemiology and Healthcare and the lead author, said that as the cost-of-living crisis takes hold, “Concerns about money have been increasing, with people now more concerned about finances than about Covid-19. This suggests that new psychological stressors are becoming dominant for individuals.” The study found that there has also been a drop in happiness and life satisfaction levels, with fewer than half of adults saying they felt in control of their mental health, as compared with 54 per cent six months ago. Depression and anxiety symptoms are the highest they have been for more than a year, on a level with when the first lockdown was eased in 2020.

The Glenfield Community Food Hub wins a Platinum Jubilee Community and Business Award The following letter, informing the Glenfield Community Food Hub of the award, was written by Mr Michael Kapur, Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire:

T

O CELEBRATE Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, you might be aware that I instigated my own Community and Business Award for seventy deserving organisations within Leicester City and the County of Leicestershire. The purpose of the award was to recognise and celebrate the achievements of those organisations which have done something exceptional and positive for our communities. I am therefore writing to you to inform you that your organisation has been awarded one of my awards. I am sure over the coming weeks you will be receiving many messages of congratulations, to which I would like to add my own personal message of congratulation, which I hope you will be able to pass on to everyone within your organisation.

Sunday 10 July 2.30 pm A TOUR OF BARDON PARK AND CHAPEL A chance to see Leicestershire‘s oldest Nonconformist chapel and the sites in Bardon Park, once Leicestershire‘s largest deer park.

A significant number of organisations were considered for my award and your organisation stood out as one which was deserving to be one of only seventy to receive the award. You deserve your award and should be extremely proud. Over the next few weeks my office will make the necessary arrangements for either myself or one of my Deputy Lieutenants to present you with your award. Once again, many congratulations and thank you for everything you do. Yours sincerely

Mr Michael Kapur Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire

Railway Stories BY TED COOK

AMBERLEY STATION on the mid-Sussex line where I worked as signalman from 1968 to 1970 is all still there with certain changes. Bert‘s house - the last signalman to live there - has long gone. The signal box and booking office is boarded up and the signalling is controlled from Three Bridges Signalling Centre many miles away. When I was at Amberley there were many incidents. In one I nearly got the sack for stopping an express to put our best passenger on. Mr Giles was our only 3-month season ticket owner and had his own firm in London. This one morning he missed his train to London and told me he had an important meeting he had to get to. Was there not another train? I told him there was an express due but he would have to drive to the next station up the line to get on and he would not be able to do it in time. So I told him to go over to the other platform and if the train stopped and I gave him the tip to jump in. The train did stop because I had to caution the driver for sheep on the line. Was that good for Mr Giles! I reported stopping the train to control but the driver never saw any sheep! I thought that was the end of it until Mr Carter the Station Master turned up a few days later with a letter from the General Manager at Waterloo wanting to know why i had stopped a train to allow a passener to get on! I told the Station Master that was not the truth and explained the train was stopped to caution the driver about sheep on the line. How did I know this? I said a car driver had reported them - check the control reports. I do not think the Station Master believed a word but he could not prove otherwise! Later Mr Giles arrived at the station and I asked him if he knew the general manager. He replied: 'Yes - George. After that meeting we met up at my club in London and I told him about you and how he should be looking at promoting you!'

‘Promotion?’ I said. ‘You nearly got me the sack!’ He offered to have another word with George but I told him to say no more as I had sorted it!

Growing Old A Poem by Paul Tuff When do we change from who we were To who we have now become The image in the mirror is looking old The good looks have now long gone. Two eyes that used to sparkle Look tired and weary now. A face that used to light up Many lines now cover its brow. The skin is no longer supple Crows’ feet are here to stay Hair once dark and curly Has thinned and turned to grey.

The body has started to lose its shape All that was firm isn’t anymore Aches and pains are now invading Places they never invaded before. The mind is still in working order Though it isn’t as it used to be Instead of stimulating thoughts of love It’s more a question of what’s for tea.

GLENFIELD PARISH NEWS The official newsletter of Glenfield Parish Council

Positive response to our Platinum Jubilee celebrations

THE PARISH COUNCIL held two community celebrations to mark the Queen‘s Platinum Jubilee. On Thursday June 2, a Beacon was lit within the Memorial Garden at Ellis Park to mark the start of an extra-long celebratory bank holiday weekend. Grateful thanks to our piper who learnt the specially composed music Diu Regnare. THE SECOND EVENT on Friday 3rd June, was the Big Jubilee BBQ Lunch which was held in the car park in front of Park House, Stamford Street and the Glenfield Memorial Hall. It was great to see so many local residents out and about, enjoying themselves with friends and families. We’ve received many positive messages from residents and here are a few examples to share:

“We would like to thank you and everyone else involved for organising such a wonderful Jubilee event in the village yesterday! We absolutely loved it.” “I just wanted to convey my most sincere thanks for such a wonderful day today. Today we took my daughter and grandson to the celebration at the park and had a fantastic day. We were overwhelmed with the generosity, organisation and kindness of the Parish and volunteers. You have certainly helped create many happy memories for so many residents. My grandson absolutely loved the face painting, circus tricks, balloon modelling - not to mention the fresh strawberries and cream. Then, he ate a lovely ice lolly which was handed to him. “My husband and I enjoyed a chat with locals, whilst listening to the marvellous jazz band in the background. It really was a perfect day and I can’t think of a single way it could have been improved. Therefore, I really do want to say thank you so very much and please pass on our appreciation to all the volunteers, the planning committee and the Parish Council for, what my family and I believe, was an absolutely amazing afternoon.”

Meetings of the Parish Council are open to the press and public and all meetings are publicised on the Parish Council’s notice boards and web site (www.glenfieldparishcouncil.org.uk). There is an opportunity for members of the public to raise any comments or queries that they have with the Parish Council. It is helpful if you contact us prior to attending the meeting so that the Council is better informed and able to help you.

Dog fouling and the law IT‘S A PROBLEM that gets on lots of people‘s nerves - the scourge of dog owners who don‘t clear up after their pets. The signs are easy to spot - the flattened deposit bearing the imprint of a shoe, the anxious parent quickly steering their offspring to one side, the man repeatedly wiping his foot on the verge as if kick-starting a decrepit motorbike. Few things irritate people quite so much as the abandoned deposits produced by the UK‘s eight million dogs. Under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, any person who permits a dog that is in their charge to foul any area to which the public has access is committing an offence. Blaby District Council can serve a Fixed Penalty Notice of £75 on any offender found not cleaning up after their dog or littering their dog waste bag (that includes throwing the dog waste bag into the nearest tree or hedge!), or can seek to prosecute through the magistrates’ courts where the maximum fine is £1,000 What the law says you can do if someone lets their dog poo on your drive • If you keep finding dog poo on your lawn or driveway you should report it to the Blaby District Council - not the police. You can usually do this online via the council website. (https:// www.blaby.gov.uk/environmental-issue/animals-and-pests/ dog-fouling/ • A dog warden should then respond as soon as possible

Call for residents to cut back overgrown trees and hedges

RESIDENTS are being urged to cut back any of their hedges or trees hanging over into paths or footways which could be putting pedestrians and road users at risk. Leicestershire County Council’s highways team have received an increasing number of reports of pavements being obstructed by overgrown trees and bushes. Landowners and occupiers have responsibilities for trees and hedges on their property (Highways Act 1980). They must make sure these do not obscure road signs, reduce visibility for road users or prevent people from using the road or pavement safely. They are also responsible for removing dead or decaying trees and other growth, removing branches that hinder high-sided vehicles or block light from a street light, and making sure roads and pavements are clear of debris from cutting work. Cutting back should be done to a minimum width from the highway of 1.2m (or to your boundary which is the central growth line) and to a height of 5.2m (roads) or 2.5m (verge/ path). Please cut back overhanging vegetation now rather than wait for an official reminder! Please also check the condition of your trees and hedges and seek professional arboricultural advice if required.

Enjoy our green spaces

WE HAVE A good network of footpaths and many wonderful open areas so why not take advantage of them rather than jumping in your car to look elsewhere. All the green spaces and many suggested walks are on the Parish Website. We have planted thousands of trees which are great for improving our air quality and fighting climate change but they have also encouraged many rarer species to come into our village. Long skies, green backgrounds and birdsong are all known to relieve stress so escape the pressures of life these days and go and chill out in one of our green oases

Neighbourhood Plan

THE PLAN has now been passed to Blaby DC for checking against the policies of higher authorities and then they will carry out a further consultation on it. It is a long-drawn-out process but this is another step along the road. The Plan has been uploaded to the Glenfield Gazette website and can be viewed in page-flip form. Extract from the Parish Council’s Annual report for 2021/2022

WELCOME to this year’s Glenfield Parish Council Annual Report. The past year has been interesting, to say the least, very busy and in many ways different from previous years. Understandably, the pandemic has had a major influence on the work of the Parish Council. The Annual Parish Meeting was held face to face but to my surprise no members of the public attended. I only take from that, that residents were completely satisfied with what the Parish had done on their behalf? I am now into my sixth year as Chair of Glenfield Parish Council (a record in its own right) and I would again like to offer my thanks to all Councillors and Staff for their efforts throughout the year and those members of the public and other agencies who have assisted with projects and initiatives that we have undertaken during this time. The Parish Council would also like to thank the members of the Glenfield Support Group, the Glenfield Community Food Hub and all the volunteers who made coping with the pandemic easier. As we look forward to this coming year, we hope to welcome more residents onto the Council. where they can become involved with all our plans, expectations and aspirations. (We are allowed 16 and currently have two vacancies) I wish everyone good health for the coming year.

Sign up now for free kids’ holiday clubs and meals this summer PARENTS AND FAMILIES are being encouraged to sign up for free holiday activity clubs running across Leicestershire over the summer holiday period. Leicestershire Holidays Together is a Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme funded by the Department for Education, for children aged five to 16 who are receiving benefits-related free school meals. Leicestershire County Council is working with Active Together to deliver the summer programme, which will be held at venues across the county by schools, voluntary and community organisations, childcare providers and sports clubs. Children and young people can access up to 16 holiday club sessions over the summer – totally free of charge. The sessions will offer a variety of fun activities, including sports, music, arts and other exciting opportunities to learn and develop new skills, alongside a nutritious meal each day.

Councillor Deborah Taylor, deputy leader and cabinet member for children and families, said: “We’re looking forward to the launch of another enriching programme of holiday activity clubs, which will be accessible to families across each Leicestershire district this summer. “By working in partnership to deliver the programme, we will be ensuring that physically and mentally beneficial activities are in place for those most in need. Applying is quick and easy – head to our website to get started.” As well as the summer HAF programme, the council is continuing with measures to tackle the rising cost of living and help residents most in need of financial support over the summer months. These are to include vouchers worth £15 per week to help the families of 14,000 children in Leicestershire who are eligible for free school meals to buy food over the six-week holiday period.

Some holiday clubs will also The vouchers are available through the council’s offer fee paying places for £3.2 million Household Support Fund, which has children and young people not been funded by the Department for Work and eligible for free school meals; and families who are eligible for Pensions. Remembering holidays The Glenfield Gardeners’ Association in Chapel St Leonards WITH SUMMER now in full swing, we should all take a few moments to enjoy the colourful blooms and fragrant flowers such as Roses, sweat peas and mock orange. The vegetable garden will be rewarding our hard work too with delicious picks for the kitchen. New potatoes, beetroot and peas should all be ready now. At our last meeting of the Glenfield Gardeners, the well respected garden designer Nick Turrell spoke to us about ideas to incorporate into our gardens. He described how to create visual impact by planting in odd numbers and placing them in symmetry and repeating them throughout your border. Controversially for some, he suggested ripping out the lawn which would allow for far more planting opportunities. Our annual garden show on 20th August is fast approaching. There is still time though to grab yourself a show schedule from Park house or the library and get crafting. We’d still like to see

your gardening themed bunting and you can be practising your quiches, Queen’s puddings, cupcakes and trifles for this year’s baking competitions. Everyone is welcome to enter and if anyone would like to help out, setting up or on the day, then please do get in touch. We appreciate any help from our local community. Our monthly meetings will resume in September with a talk by John Gibson on ‘making the most of your bulbs’. All are welcome to come along to our meetings. You don’t have to be a member. We meet at 7.30pm on the fourth Tuesday of the month in St Peter’s Church Hall. Yearly membership is just £14 or you can come for the evening for £2.50, an absolute gardening bargain and there is always tea and biscuits. Check out our facebook page for more details at www. facebook.com/ggaglenfield or ring us on 07791 488784 or 0116 2313732 or 0116 232 1120.

IF, LIKE ME, you are of an advanced age, the mention of Chapel St Leonards may bring back fond memories of summer holidays of yesteryear, when the ‘Happy Days’ and ‘Robin Hood’ caravan sites were invaded by Leicester folk during the July fortnight. The excitement started with the loading up of the car for the two and a half hour journey. landmarks along the route were greeted like old friends - passing the always-flowing waterpipe at Croxton Kerrial - stopping for a drink at the Prattinton Arms - passing the impressive Tattershall Castle - the not-so-impressive rickety bridge over the River Witham - the amusingly-named Cobblers Corner Garage - calling at The Plant Lovers roadside garden centre - and finally the turning into Trunch Lane, which meant you’d almost arrived at the seaside. You then had to locate the caravan that you’d rented for the week and settle in with a nice cup of tea. In those days, Chapel St Leonards provided just two forms of entertainment for grown-ups: they could either go for a drink - in the caravan site’s clubhouse or The Smugglers Inn, or play bingo. The intervals between these two activities were spent walking to and from the ‘front’ (it was always too cold or wet to actually sit on the beach), or snoozing in the caravan. For kids, though, there were loads of things to do. Job One on the list was to hire a Social Cycle - a weird combination of two bikes welded to a park bench - and ride down to Chapel village. You hired the cycle for an hour, so by the time you reached the village, it was time to come back. Second on the list was a visit to the Griftville Cinema - a converted Nissen Hut-type building in the middle of the caravan site - to see their latest film offering. Next, a tour of the arcades to check out any new machines, and to work out a winning strategy. (By day three of your holiday, with all of your own money spent, these visits took place less frequently.) You were attracted back to the arcades by the offer of a free game of bingo twice daily, and once there, you and your bingo-mad mother stayed for ‘just one more game’ until it was time for a fish and chip dinner. At the end of the week, there would be the agony of deciding which prizes to exchange your bingo wins for. And if you were a couple of vouchers short of the prize you really wanted, it meant press-ganging the family into playing a final session. Then it was all over for another year, and you’d set off back home, passing all the landmarks again, and letting out a big cheer as the Leicestershire border was crossed. Nowadays, many people seem to prefer a week away in a hot foreign country, or a cruise around the Caribbean, but it’s not the same is it? DO YOU have happy memories of summer holidays at Chapel St Leonards? Did you enjoy a Knickerbocker Glory at the Marina Cafe? Tell us about it. Explore hidden walks and public footpaths this summer with this map WALKERS AND RAMBLERS are being invited to use an interactive map to explore Leicestershire’s 1,800 miles of public footpaths. The interactive map allows people to see right of way footpaths across the county as well as highlighting over 150 specific walks. The map also allows users to filter by routes distance and elements of interest, such as historic locations or family-friendly walks that pass play areas. The walks can also be seen by their difficulty so people of all abilities can know which ones they can attempt. Leicestershire County Council is encouraging people to use their public footpaths over the coming months while stressing the benefits which include improved health and getting around without adding to carbon dioxide emissions. Research has shown most county residents going walking, cycling, or riding at least once a month and many residents have said they see access to the countryside as important. Leicestershire’s public footpaths make up 40 per cent of highways in the county and are also used regularly in both town and rural locations for practical travel and leisure. https://www.choosehowyoumove.co.uk/walks/

St Peter’s Church News THE OTHER DAY I was reminded of my final day at primary school. I was taking an assembly locally, with 5-year-olds sat at my feet and 11-yearolds at the far end of the hall. Looking at them, I realised firstly that they were the children who were sat at my feet in my first assembly there back in 2016 and secondly that I would never see them in an assembly again. Come September, they will be off on the bus into Anstey or Groby or further afield, to start again at secondary school. And it took me back to that final day of goodbyes and farewells at St Mark’s in Islington. When we stood awkwardly around, with squash and cakes on desks which had been covered in exercise books and pencils or fountain pens – never ever ballpoints – wondering what we were supposed to do. Most children in my school went to the local secondary. I, however, was off somewhere else. Having recently moved house, I was now living close enough to still walk to school each morning, but far enough away that I was in another catchment area. So while for most of my classmates this was a simple, ‘See you in September’ moment, for me it was the first, ‘I’ll probably never see you again’ moment I’d had. And I never did, except one of them. There’s something about final goodbyes. Something which is difficult to handle: something within us that rebels against that ending. Most of us face them at some point in life: whether it’s through the changing circumstances of life, or the conclusion of death. It’s not long since we marked again in our calendar the events of Easter and then his final ascension into heaven. That final goodbye in which Jesus – thankfully not as clueless as an 11-year-old me – knew exactly what he had to offer his friends: a purpose, to bear witness to the truth about life and God they’d found in him; and a promise, that though separated from him, he would never abandon them, that they’d always know God’s presence through the Holy Spirit. For all of us who face change and challenge this summer, God promises to be with us, wherever we go, however much changes around us.

Why are Charity Shops so important?

Shop local, reduce waste and support Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation By Alice Wright SHUTTLEWOOD CLARKE Foundation, a registered charity, have been supporting older people and adults with disabilities through the provision of support and friendship since 1990.

Based at Ulverscroft, near Markfield, the Foundation boasts two charity shops, stocking a wide range of pre-loved items, where you can find everything from clothes, books and homeware to homegrown plants and furniture. Charity Shops are becoming increasingly visible on our high streets and are estimated to save the local councils in the UK at least £31 million a year in waste reduction costs. ‘Fast-Fashion’ is on the rise and is thought to be harmful and destructive to our environment, due to the impact it has through carbon emissions. Reducing reliance on cheap throwaway goods and shopping for pre-loved or upcycled items, provides the perfect opportunity to shop sustainability and save money at the same time. If you live in Markfield or the surrounding areas, why not pop in and support Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation by shopping in their onsite charity shops at Ulverscroft Grange, Whitwick Road, Ulverscroft, Leicestershire, LE67 9QB. Open from Monday-Saturday 10-4pm, they would be delighted for your support. For more information, about the work of the Foundation, the charity shops or becoming a volunteer please visit their website https://shuttlewoodclarke.org/ , call 01530 244914 or email hello@shuttlewood-clarke.org

BUT THERE ARE LESSONS OUR CHILDREN WON‘T BE TAUGHT, UNLESS WE DO IT OURSELVES.

I

HAVE BEEN contributing to the education industry for well over ten years and it‘s become abundantly clear the system is totally unfit for purpose (IF the purpose is healthy, happy, independent and aware future generations that is) and it‘s progressively getting worse. So is the purpose of our schooling system really just to instill discipline, reinforce behaviour patterns and create a nation of narrow-minded, unempowered, conformists?

Lindzi Mayann

Well, our schools are rigid and oldfashioned. We use measures and blanket expectations to categorise and label kids, teaching them only what to think - not how to think - before testing them on a pile of useless knowledge, then expect them to choose a career path based on a couple of chats and some Internet research. Is it any wonder mental health problems are rife? Young people feel like their future is bleak and I am not surprised.
