Appeal granted for 49 homes in Thornton

Brownies’ Jubilee party

AS REPORTED IN THE LEICESTER MERCURY, residents of Thornton have been defeated in their long-fought battle to protect a field in their village from development. Hundreds of locals have opposed plans to develop greenfield land at the end of Beech Drive, since a proposal was first lodged in 2014.

Concerns were raised that it would damage an area of countryside and increase congestion in the area. Councillors have turned down three proposals for the site, filed by Barwood Homes and J H Hallam & Son Limited, but the latest scheme, for 49 homes, has now been granted on appeal. The Planning Inspector said in their decision report that the houses “would not stand out as a dominant feature in the local landscape” and that a suggested traffic calming scheme would mitigate the traffic impact of the development. The original proposal, filed in 2014, was rejected by the council as it was deemed that the area did not have the infrastructure or services to support the new homes. An appeal was filed but the inquiry was then delayed, so the council invited a revised application from the developer in advance of the appeal inquiry. A new scheme was lodged in April 2016, reducing the number of homes from 49 to 48, but this was also turned down over concerns about the impact on the countryside. The latest application, filed in 2020, said that the increase in Thornton’s population would increase footfall and revenue for local shops. Cllr Andy Furlong a member of the Planning Committee, who voted against the application, said: “As a Thornton resident for over twenty years, I have to say that I feel desperately sad for my friends and former neighbours in the village. One of the driving factors behind my decision to move was the limited access to local services. This new development can only make matters worse. This is the harsh reality of the government’s ‘Build, Build, Build’ agenda. The elected councillors in Thornton must be open and honest about this.”

The Jubileethemed games, tombola and of course cakes were all very successful and helped to raise over £230. We would like to thank Alyssa and Sofia for organising and also all the relatives and friends that came to support us.
