Neighbourhood Plan consultation launches

RESIDENTS in Glenfield are being urged to have their say on how they want to see future development in the Parish.

The Parish Council have submitted the Glenfield Neighbourhood Plan to Blaby District Council for it to be taken through the final stages before it is ‘made’ – ie adopted as an official planning document.

Once the Neighbourhood Plan is made it will form part of the development plan in terms of informing decisions on planning applications and what areas of land have value in historic terms or green space.

However, before this, local residents have the chance to make their views known, helping shape the future of their own Parish. Those who work in the Parish and anyone else with an interest are also invited to comment.

This formal consultation stage is run by Blaby District Council and will last six weeks from Tuesday 31 January to Tuesday 14 March. All comments must be sent to Blaby District Council and not the Parish Council.

Councillor Ben Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Planning Delivery and Enforcement and Corporate

Transformation, said: “We are pleased to receive this latest Neighbourhood Plan which demonstrates how our local communities are continuing to work with ourselves as the Planning Authority and make their views known on how their neighbourhoods should be shaped going forwards.

“We’d urge everyone who lives and works in Glenfield to take a look at the plan and have their say. This has been produced by the community, so public involvement is so important to make sure it’s shaped for a local view.”

Western Park Golf Course and the Glenfield Neighbourhood Plan

THE GLENFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN CLOSES ON 14TH MARCH.

This is an important opportunity to make your views known on the future of Glenfield.

A crucial aspect of the Neighbourhood Plan is the preservation of green spaces. Around a third of the City owned golf course lies within Blaby.

This Blaby section is clearly under threat judging by this extract from the Leicester Local Plan: “4.24 The Local Plan identifies 52.1 ha of land in the western part of the city within the Leicester city administrative boundary. This land forms part of a larger area which lies within Blaby District Council but is owned by LCC. The two councils plan to work together in bringing the wider piece of land forward for development.”

Therefore, I ask all of you who value green spaces in Glenfield to express your views, particularly with regards to the former golf course. The Glenfield Neighbourhood Plan can be found on the Parish website under Planning. The relevant pages for green spaces and biodiversity are: 9,16,27,31 to 43,48,54,55,64 & 65.

THE GLENFIELD COUNTRY MARKET is a weekly event held in the centre of Glenfield. Producers cook, craft and grow, displaying their wares at this popular market held each Friday in St Peter’s Church Centre, Glenfield (LE3 8DP) from 9am-11am. We continue to welcome new customers having heard about us through the Glenfield Gazette.

We are aware that people are tightening their belts but it is worth saying that we still offer good value for money across the craft, bakes and preserves and plants displays. We are also currently reducing some of our prices to enable our producers to make room for new creations. Why don’t you give us a try? It’s a friendly, informal and free event and we will be very happy to see you. There are refreshments available as well as a wide range of hand-crafted goods to buy. Business Start-Up Development

THE FINAL UNIT in a development of seven commercial buildings within Glenborough Court, Glenfield, Leicester has been sold by specialist land development and property consultancy Mather Jamie on behalf of Lagan Homes.

The units have been designed and marketed as suitable for new business start-ups in order to meet a much needed gap in the market for small, high quality owner occupier investment opportunities. Occupation of the seven units has also created several new employment opportunities in Glenfield.

The site was originally occupied by Glenborough Engineering. When this business closed, having built an adjacent business park, Cawrey Homes purchased the land and self-funded part of the build. Construction was completed in 2021 and Cawrey Homes was subsequently acquired by Lagan Homes.

The seven two storey units vary in size from 1,238 ft2 to 1,560 ft2 and the businesses occupying the units include professional advisers, electricians, distributors and a wholesales trading business, whilst one of the units is being fitted out to let as an office.

Established in 1983, Lagan Homes Group is at the forefront of high-quality homebuilding, with a range of commercial schemes across the country. An award-winning developer operating in three divisions (England, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland). Other advisers on the deal included Emma Ali from Shakepeare Martineau who provided legal advice to Lagan Homes.

Letter Happy Birthday to an inspirational fundraiser

MY PARTNER Donata Del Grosso of Glenfield will be 54 on March 7th.

I want to wish her a very happy birthday and add that she is an avid fundraiser who has raised many thousands of pounds for the University Hospitals of Leicester,where she has worked for many years starting as a nurse and now a general manager.

Among her many fundraising events have been running the London Marathon,running The Great North Run, a hundred mile bike ride through the night, abseiling off the hospital roof and walking the Three Peaks Challenge.

She is currently in training for this year‘s London Marathon and raising funds for the hospital again.

She is a hero and an inspiration, and myself, her family and her friends love her very much and wish her happy birthday and good luck in your marathon.

Also - thank you from all the patients and their family members for all you have done to improve their lives.

With walks from half a mile to twelve miles plus long, and a note of suitability for pushchairs and wheelchairs, everyone can find a walk to enjoy.

Good turnout for the Millennium Green AGM

THE GLENFIELD Millennium Green Annual General meeting took place on 10th February and it was great to see so many people there.

At the meeting the Chair read out his yearly report, followed by the treasurer, gardener and finally me with fundraising update. We had two trustees step down and two step up.

As you may know, the Glenfield Millennium Green trust is run by local people for local people. There is no council money towards running costs which means the trust always has to raise funds and ask for voluntary labour to improve and maintain the area.

How can you help?

By the time you read this article we may have already had our next meeting which was on 6th March at Morrisons‘ Community Room.

These meetings are held regularly to share ideas to help raise funds to keep this amazing space in our community.

Please come along to our next meeting (date available soon).

If you can’t make a meeting then come along to one of our events at The Green: please see our website and Facebook page for more details of these. Tell your neighbours, friends, family about our events & encourage them to come along too.

What are our plans for this year?

Funding available for ‘shovel ready’ nature projects across the region

SEVERN TRENT has funding available for communities who want to boost nature across the region.

The water and waste company is inviting individual land managers, community groups and businesses to come forward for funding for projects to improve nature in the local environment.

This offer is available FOR A LIMITED TIME to help support nature projects across the region that may have been put on hold because of the cost-of-living crisis.

The scale of each project must be over one acre (that’s roughly half the size of a rugby pitch) and must be completed by FRIDAY 24 MARCH 2023.

Graham Osborn, Principal Ecologist at Severn Trent, said: “What’s good for nature is good for water and we’re open to any ideas, but the more creative the better! For a bit of inspiration, previous projects have included hedgerow planting, wildflower meadow creation and habitat management for native birds and mammals.”

Graham added: “To qualify for this funding, the project must be completed by Friday 24 March 2023, so ideas and proposals need to be shovel-ready to ensure they are up and running by the spring to give the habitats and wildlife the best chance to thrive. We will also consider projects that have already started but weren’t able to be completed, perhaps because they ran into financial difficulty.”

The available funding is part of Severn Trent’s Great Big Nature Boost – an environmental commitment that is seeing Severn Trent revive 5,000 hectares of land, plant 1.3 million trees and restore 2,000km of rivers across the Severn Trent region by 2027, allowing the company to give back to the communities it serves while helping to improve the quality of the water it treats and supplies to its customers.

These have been obtained from the Police and Fire services and complied into the below table. These statistics refer to all types of crimereportedto the Police and Fire service over the 12 months of the year 2022. This includes stop and searches conducted by the Police as well as crime reported to them. There were 108,285 crimes recorded and reported between January and December and the outcomes of these are:

The Brown Hare

LATE WINTER and early spring is the best time to look out for brown hares, when their breeding season brings them out into the open and you may be likely to see them chasing one another in fields and meadows.

Sometimes they look like they are “boxing”, when two hares will stand on their hind legs and attack each other with their front paws, giving the impression of two boxers in a ring; this is actually the female hare hitting out at a male hare to ward of his advances!

Brown hares are much larger than rabbits, with distinctive large blacktipped ears and long, powerful hind legs. They are a golden brown colour, with a pale belly and white tail. A shy, alert creature the brown hare is equipped for life in open countryside where cold wind and rain is as much of a challenge to survival as predators. Large eyes, positioned to allow 360-degree field of view, provide the excellent eye- sight and hearing it needs to warn off danger. As well as acute senses, the brown hare relies on camouflage, phenomenal powers of acceleration and running speeds of up to 45 mph to evade predators, such as foxes. Hares live above ground, sheltering in ‘forms’, which are shallow depressions in the grass. They spend most of their day on or near their ‘form’, moving out to feed at dusk and dawn, mainly eating grass shoots and cereal crops. Hares are mostly solitary animals but will sometimes band into loose groups when feeding. During the breeding season, the female can rear up to three or four litters of two to four young known as leverets. During the first four weeks of their life, the mother will feed the leverets once a day at sunset; beyond that, they receive no other parental care.

The brown hare is part of our folklore, its energetic leaping and wild chasing has given rise to sayings such as ‘mad as a March hare’ and ‘hare-brained’, and we all know the character of the March Hare in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. However, they are actually a non-native species; it is thought that they were first introduced to England during Roman times or by people of the Iron Age. Look out for brown hares at Rutland Water Nature Reserve.

Did you know that “Putting domestic refuse in public bins constitutes fly-tipping”?

CAN RESIDENTS please be reminded that using local street refuse bins for their own domestic use is classed as fly tipping and the bins may then be removed by the District Council.

Photo ID will be required for voting in May 2023

NEW GOVERNMENT rules mean voters will be required to show an accepted form of photo ID if they want to vote at a polling station in this year’s Parish and District elections on Thursday 04 May.

An extensive list of acceptable forms of ID is available, including passports, driving licences, bus passes and blue badges. Check the Electoral Commission website to see which forms of photo ID are acceptable at polling stations: https://www. electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter/voter-id/acceptedforms-photo-id

The ID does not even necessarily have to be in date – as long as the photo still looks like the resident who wants to use it and the name on the ID is the same name used to register to vote. However, only original versions of the ID will be accepted, photocopies or images will not be allowed in order to cast a vote.

Voters who do not have an accepted form of ID can apply for a free ‘voter authority certificate’ - a VAC - to allow them to cast their ballot. Apply online on the government website: Apply for photo ID to vote (called a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’) - GOV. UK (www.gov.uk) The VAC will be valid for 10 years and must be applied for by 5pm on Tuesday 25 April.

Parish Council is helping towards the cost of 20 Coronation street parties

GLENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL is offering £50 to the first 20 validated applications to LCC for a road closure for a street party to commemorate King Charles III Coronation.

The Community Committee at Glenfield Parish Council has discussed what residents may want to do to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III. Some of you may decide to have a street party to enjoy the event with neighbours. You know how to do this but the cost may be prohibitive.

The Community Committee has agreed that 20 groups can each receive a donation of £50.00 to help with the organisation and planning. We hope that this will help you to enjoy the occasion. Please email The Administrator at admin@glenfield-pc.gov. uk at Glenfield Parish Council with your requests.

Meetings of the Parish Council are open to the press and public and all meetings are publicised on the Parish Council’s notice boards and web site (www.glenfield-pc.gov.uk). There is an opportunity for members of the public to raise any comments or queries that they have with the Parish Council. It is helpful if you contact us prior to attending the meeting so that the Council is better informed and able to help you.

AT THE FEBRUARY meeting we were joined by Richard Warren to talk to us about the life and times of Thomas Cook.

Thomas was born in Melbourne Derbyshire in 1808. Sadly, his father died when he was only 3 years old. As was the way in those times his mother remarried. At the age of 10 he went to work at Melbourne Hall as an apprentice gardener, subsequently he completed a further apprenticeship with an uncle becoming a cabinet maker. He was brought up within the Baptist church spending much time travelling the neighbourhood evangelising and distributing leaflets. He went on to become a Baptist Preacher, he also became involved in the temperance movement although not as fervently as his wife Marianne whom he married in 1833.

As most of the miles he travelled were on foot it is not hard to imagine how attractive the idea of travelling on the latest invention of the railways was. He arranged a group trip between Leicester Campbell Street railway and Loughborough to a temperance rally. Thus began his first organised escorted excursion selling it for a shilling return.

In 1845 there was no direct link between the English and Scottish railways so he organised for 350 people to travel to Scotland by rail to Liverpool then boat to the West coast of Scotland and further by train. This could be described as the first package tour.

He and his wife went on to arrange for 150,000 people to travel to the Great Exhibition in 1851. This was followed by their first excursions abroad when they took two groups on the grand tour through Belgium, Germany and France ending in Paris when it held its Great Exhibition.

For these tours they created guide Books which were another world first. These booklets recommended places to go, to stay and to avoid. Another innovation was the equivalent of traveller’s cheques. During this time he had overstretched himself by booking a journey and paying for all of it in advance but the tickets were not taken up and he was declared bankrupt. Rather unusually he subsequently paid all of his creditors in full.

The company became Thomas Cook & Son as John Mason Cook joined. As the business grew the two men did not always agree and they eventually became estranged. Thomas retired in 1878 and lived quietly in Leicester until his death in 1892 in Knighton. An excellent talk which all members thoroughly enjoyed.

Our next meeting is on March 2nd and the talk is entitled “Women who would not say no”. Sounds intriguing!

Severn Trent offers free trees to landowners across its region

SEVERN TRENT is offering free trees to landowners of between 2.2 and 5 acres across its region.

The water company is asking interested landowners to get in touch BY THE END OF MARCH to access the exciting offer, which will see Severn Trent assist with pre-planting planning and maintenance costs over 10 years.

Severn Trent, who was the Official Nature and Carbon Neutral Partner of Birmingham 2022, will provide a desktop assessment of the land, and will draw up a tree planting plan which will include trees that are in keeping with the area that they will be planted in.

The trees planted will contribute to the 2,022-acre Commonwealth Forest that the company committed to planting following the Games.

At Warning Zone children hear real life stories and experience learning through interactive zones led by our volunteer guides. The centre is split into two. There is a general safety zone –fire, arson, railways, personal safety, water, electricity, road safety to name a few! And E-Safety - topics include online phishing, cyber bullying, sharing and use of inappropriate images, online grooming and more. Both areas explore themes such as peer pressure, criminal responsibility and consequences, the importance of talking to a trusted adult, being a good friend, and mental health and wellbeing.

Warning Zone wouldn‘t function without the generosity of our wonderful team of volunteers who deliver lessons and experiences to the children from Monday to Friday throughout the academic year. Each day is split into a morning and afternoon session. This equates to 10 sessions a week that we require volunteers. Each session needs approximately 10 volunteers, so that is around 100 volunteers a week! Some of the volunteers stay for the day, while others just come for a morning or afternoon session. The minimum requirement is just 5 hours per month (2 sessions).

Volunteers range from 16 to 80+ years old, from all walks of life. The day at Warning Zone is ideal for parents with children at school, fitting in with school drop off and pickups. It’s also great for people that have retired and are looking for a way to use their extensive, valuable skills and experience. It really is a rewarding volunteering opportunity and a great way to give back to the community. There is a dedicated space for volunteers where appreciation is shown from biscuits to days out and achievements are celebrated with certificates at various stages.

EMBROIDERY is beautiful and fascinating. It has so many different forms. It can be detailed or bold, colourful or monochrome, magnificent or miniature. It’s a great aid to mindfulness in anxious times. It can be a record of happy places and events. It can be wonderfully intricate, or it can be very simpleand still really effective.

For forty years, Jennie Fox has been teaching a superb range of hand embroidery skills to many happy embroiderers from all around Leicester. Students come saying they couldn’t ever do beautiful pieces like hers - and surprise themselves with what they create. Jennie is as skilled at inspiring people as she is at showing them actual techniques. Sometimes Jennie suggests a design, but everyone chooses different colours or size or detail. Sometimes each person just brings their own project. Looking at fellow students’ work is part of the enjoyment and the learning of a class. The classes are so friendly and encouraging and supportive as well as full of lovely work!

THE NEXT TERM of Jennie’s classes begins after Easter. There are a few places available on Wednesday evenings at the Church Hall in Syston, so if you think this might be for you, give Jennie a ring on 0116 260 7585.

THE INHABITANTS of the Inventor’s Housing Estate keep themselves to themselves. There are the friendly ‘Hellos’ when commutes coincide and the odd cheeky eye roll when the wine bottles clank in number 7’s wheelie bin, but it’s not exactly Ramsay Street.

The dilapidated community centre is no longer the beating heart of the estate that Becky remembers from her childhood. So the new pottery class she’s helped set up feels like a fresh start. And not just for her.

And as the soft unremarkable lumps of clay are hesitantly, lovingly moulded into delicate vases and majestic pots, so too are the lives of four women. Concealed passions and heartaches are uncovered, relationships shattered and formed, and the possibility for transformation is revealed.

Clare Balding is broadcasting royalty – and her own royal connections are pretty impressive too…

To millions of TV viewers, Clare Balding is the charismatic presenter of Crufts, which returns to the NEC Birmingham this month (9th-12th March). Clare has hosted the show since 2004 (for both the BBC and now Channel 4). So, does she have a favourite moment throughout her time presenting Crufts? “Having puppies with me on the sofa is always a joy, as you never know what’s going to happen. If I can have a dog on my lap or at my feet for every link, I’m happy.”

Clare, 52, who lives in West London with her radio presenter wife Alice Arnold, was the recipient of an unexpected CBE in the late Queen’s Birthday Honours for 2022. Already with an OBE in 2013 for her services to broadcasting and journalism, Clare was given the title in acknowledgment of her services to sport and charity.

Sport has always played an important part in Clare’s life. Not only has the BAFTA-winning presenter, who joined the BBC as a trainee in 1994, led the coverage of sporting events including the Olympics and Paralympics, the Grand National, Wimbledon, Royal Ascot and the Commonwealth Games to name but a few, Clare became a champion amateur jockey in her early twenties and dreamt of winning the Grand National, or riding at the Olympics.

Clare has two other great passions in life –animals (especially dogs and horses) and writing. Her childhood was unconventional. Home for Clare and her brother Andrew was Park House Stables, 1,500 acres of land adjoining Watership Down. Her father, Ian Balding, was the Queen’s racehorse trainer. Rather inevitably, Clare took easily to horses, learning to ride almost as soon as she could walk. Her first mount, Valkyrie, a

sweet-natured Shetland pony, was given to her parents by the Queen shortly after Clare was born. Valkyrie had taught Princes Andrew and Edward to ride.

Her long association with the royal family is through her grandfather, Peter Hastings-Bass, father Ian and uncle, the seventeenth Earl of Huntingdon, with all serving as trainers for the Queen’s horses.

Reflecting on their connections back in 2017, Clare said: “My dad trained for the Queen so growing up, she would come and see the horses…about once a year and sometimes he’d forget to tell us that the Queen was coming.”

“So, you’d have that situation where you came back to the house, the Queen was there for breakfast, that was really odd.”

“She loved coming to the stables because it was the one place that didn’t smell of fresh paint, it smelt of horses.”

Clare is also a best-selling and award-winning author of numerous books and children’s novels. Her first book, My Animals and Other Family was published by Penguin in 2012. Her second book, Walking Home, was published in 2014, while her first children’s book, The Racehorse Who Wouldn’t Gallop, a witty book with a horse-mad heroine, followed in 2016. To date Clare has a further five books to her credit.

LOROS LADIES’ SINGERS fundraising raises £30.000 for the hospice

WE ARE A small lady’s choir which has been in existence since 2005 We originally consisted of staff, volunteers, and friends. Staff started to leave or retire, and now it consists of former staff, volunteers and friends’ staff and volunteers. We liaise with LOROS fundraisers and have raised over thirty thousand pounds since 2005

We have sung at over 140 events singing for LOROS on many occasions, including on the ward, in Day Therapy, at volunteers’ parties, the 25th anniversary picnic, LOROS shop opening.

- We have sung at many concerts and fundraising events, also weddings and funerals and in various settings including churches, halls, care homes, hospital ward, pubs, gardens, parties, shops

The first is about a group of women, waiting for a bus, who indulge in gossip to pass the time, revealing their differing views on life.

The second is about the ‘The Little Grimley Amateur Dramatic Society’ who are in trouble, and need to sell tickets fast, and the only thing that will sell tickets, argues Gordon, the Chairman, is ‘Sex’!!

is appealing to the public to help find their longest staying dogs - Ernie, Doug, Otter - loving and responsible homes. The dogs, who are all male aged 3 years or under, have been with the Leicestershire-based re-homing charity for several months, and despite appeals on social media they are still being overlooked.

Finding the right home is a bit like matchmaking because new owners must have a lifestyle that is compatible with their new best friend. The Charity is seeking owners who have experience of the animals’ behaviour quirks, which may be one of the factors causing a delay in finding the right home. All three dogs are looking for a new home where they are the only pet and will be living with adults only. The dogs have had some interest, but they haven‘t found their perfect match yet. Could their quirks be what you are looking for?

Maybe you, or someone you know could offer them the right environment to thrive.

Ernie, is a cheeky and funloving British Bulldog, who loves football. He will play with his new owner(s) all day once he trusts them, and he does need help learning to share his new toys. Doug does need a very patient owner who is experienced with his breed. Doug also is very possessive of his toys and needs a patient owner who can manage his behaviour within the home when he feels overwhelmed.

Otter, a handsome and cheeky chap, is also unsure of new environments. He is an Akita, a

unique breed. The kennel team at LAA say he has grown hugely in confidence, and they are hoping to find an owner who can continue helping him with this. Otter would be best with someone who has lots of time for him and who will be understanding of his needs. He would make a great walking companion if heading somewhere quiet and rural. CONFIDENCE. Some of us have it, some of us don’t. Or rather, we are all confident in something, just not necessarily ourselves!

I was not a confident teen – bullied at school when I moved up to secondary, I spent most of my teenage years and well into early adulthood with a lack of selfesteem, even when achieving success I still couldn’t believe I was capable of it. I would avoid situations where I felt vulnerable to failure – I didn’t audition for the school play, try out for the college cricket team, ask anyone out. In fact one nickname I picked up at college was ‘Tre-who-he?’. Gaining self-confidence was a slow process, trying to ground myself in facts that I could remind myself of when I doubted. It’s something I still need to do from time to time.

And I don’t think I’m alone. My guess is that many people – not everyone, by any means – struggle more with self-confidence and self-image. More than we might imagine from appearances. Studies have shown this too – it’s not just my instinct. Many of us project more outward confidence than we think we do.

Interestingly the Bible has a different take on how we might gain confidence and assurance. It’s not in our own achievements – the problem being with this, as I’ve found, is that it only lasts as long as my next failure, and there’s normally one of those just around the corner. Instead, we’re encouraged to find our sense of confidence, that almost indefinable quality which allows us to step out and try new things, risk new encounters, in what God has done for us in Jesus. This is undeniable, unalterable: a sure thing, based on historical events and his interpretation of reality. Confidence comes from being sure of something. If we can’t be sure of ourselves, it’s good to know that we have a source of strength, of surety, in what God has done for us, and continues to do in us, through his unchangeable love for us.

Part Four of Roy Denney’s series on Glenfield Through the Ages Glenfield - Today

GLENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL was formed in 1894 and prior to that, such village records as there were should have been maintained in the ‘Village Box’ in the custody of the local Rector.

When the Council was formed and took over such responsibilities, the box was obtained without any key and had to be publicly broken into only to find that it did not even contain the Ordnance Survey map required to show the limits of the parish.

In 1901 permission was obtained for the parish of Glenfield to absorb the parish of Glenfield Frith to create the village as we know it today, although in those days it contained much more open land. Officially since then, the parish has been called Glenfields although the village retains the name of Glenfield.

Long gardens

One anomaly with an historic explanation is the number of properties with very long gardens. If you go back long enough the houses at the Leicester end of Dominion Road and the length of Sports Road were weekend retreats for Leicester people when the area was mostly open country. There were allotments and small weekend-retreat properties along the track with long gardens behind. Most of the properties have been replaced but a few still remain and some have been removed to create small closes of properties where back gardens used to be.

Back in 1909 the residents were circulated to assess the demand for allotments but the cost was prohibitive. However, in 1918 with assistance from the Food Production Department, land was acquired and there are now two allotment sites owned by the Parish; one off Main Street and another off Mill Lane.

The year 1900 might be taken as the start of the modern era but 50 years later saw a major turning point. Back in the 1950s, it was suggested that boundaries be changed and that Glenfield should become part of the City of Leicester, but this was strongly resisted and finally dropped. There is no discernible join between the village and the city to its east but fortunately, the Rothley Brook corridor helps separate us from neighbours to the north and west. The M1 and A46 keep us apart from those to the south although the green wedge in that area is slowly being infilled.

After the second world war ended it was proposed that a Memorial Hall should be built and it was finally opened in 1964 and extended in the early 1980s.

Housing development

Back in the 1950s, the Calverley estate was developed and the nature of the village changed with another primary school being required. County Hall became another important employer and with the population growing steadily more shops came along.

Optimus Point bringing the population to close to 12,000. This includes about 1,000 children of secondary school age, but we have no such school. More recently even more houses have been added and there is the threat of more still. The Parish Council where it can, is acquiring and developing green spaces to preserve the separation zones.

We have seen the creation of a large new commercial area largely taken up by distribution businesses but as part of that process have gained a number of new amenity areas and new footpaths, a new set of allotments and substantial amounts of money to improve existing facilities. We did lose green acreage but that had been monoculture with almost no access, so what we have now if smaller is far more attractive and available.

As the population grows and the Council takes on responsibility for more buildings and more open spaces, inevitably more staff are required and there have been alterations to Park House to accommodate these. That involved building new quarters for the grounds staff and their equipment and providing a detached garage for the vehicle.

Thirty years later Park House was built as the home of the Parish Council, and the Elm Tree housing development brought yet more people. In recent years a further housing estate has been built beside
