Exceeding Expectations...

“Builders Warehouse” Builders Warehouse was started in 1977 in Kearney, NE, under the name Payless Building Center. Its concept was a 50% balance of pro/retail with all of the pro business coming from Andersen Construction, a related company. It was a 2,000 sq. ft. retail/office space with 8,000 sq.ft. of lumber buildings. The first year’s sales were $150,000 with 4 employees. Sales continued to grow until 1985, when the business was moved to a new 40,000 sq.ft. retail location by a new mall. The name was changed to Builders Warehouse to better reflect the changing customer base. A pro LBM operation and truss manufacturing division were added in Grand Island, NE in August of 1995. The Denver office was opened in 2008, adding a pro lumber operation along with a truss & wall panel manufacturing plant. Builders currently does approximately $40,000,000 in total related sales in it’s 5 divisions. 1 Pro and Retail division in Kearney, NE 2 Pro Lumber and Building Materials in Grand Island, NE 3 Countertop shop in Kearney, NE 4 Truss and Wall Panel Manufacturing plant in Grand Island, NE 5 Pro Lumber dealer with truss/wall panel plant in Denver, CO All 5 divisions are tied together via the Activant Falcon ERP (enterprise resource planning) system with 6 database servers, multiple file servers, and our own Exchange server. Builders Warehouse is member of Do it Best Corp., a world-wide buying group with more than $3 billion in purchases. Builders Warehouse is 100% owned by Myron Andersen.

changes in merchandising

Accomplishments Builders in Kearney initiated some important changes in merchandising strategies. End cap and drive aisle programs for value-added merchandising were put into place, as well as the introduction of a full service garden center. The garden center is a growing segment of our market, and every effort has been made to improve product selection and quality. Traeger wood-pellet grills and other BBQ accessories, were added to outdoor living as well as new patio furniture lines.

Power tool sales continued to be strong as Kearney focused more than ever on great tool promotions and events throughout the year. We had one of the most successful sales years ever. Operationally, we focused more time and effort into increasing the efficiency of our delivery, and achieved some impressive results in loading and delivery times, with decreased expenses that can be passed on to our customers.

Initiatives

Looking forward, the Kearney store will continue to focus on re-merchandising areas that have the highest potential for return. The plumbing department is undergoing significant merchandising changes with the addition of high-end bath accessories and Kohler product lines. The flooring showroom will be enhanced with new displays to make a more family and female friendly shopping environment. Kitchen displays are being updated to reflect new trends in the market, and our garden center will be expanded again by more than 30%. Improving service levels to even higher standards is a major focus in all departments, with special attention to our loyal pro customers.

Accomplishments The team at the Builders Warehouse Design Center in Grand Island offers more than 130 years of combined experience in windows, doors, drafting, kitchen design and estimating projects. We offer residential design services, kitchen and bath design, and professional estimating using state of the art tools. Our goal is to improve our ability to better serve the customer with technology and the latest in merchandising, displays and products in our Design Center.

Our most recent changes have been dramatic. We added an 1100 square foot flooring department with all the major brand names, and created a 700 square foot bathroom design center with incorporated lighting design center. Our conference rooms allow our clients to see their projects coming together in real life and in 3-D on our 42� LCD screen!

Increased Sales...

Accomplishments Spelts Shultz Countertops increased sales 35% in the last 2 years, and increased our customer base by 50% in that same time. We now have dealers west into Colorado, south to Kansas, north to South Dakota, and east to York, NE area. We pride oursselves on putting out a quality product, on time and at a competitive price.

Initiatives Our goal is to sustain our previous growth in this down market. We are adding a thermoforming machine to our solid surface area to open up new avenues of creativity with those product lines. We are currently an authorized fabricator of 3 quartz lines: Staron by Samsung, Zodiac by Dupont and Silestone by Cosentino. We have also added the “HiMacs� surface by LG to our solid surface line, joining Staron, Corian, Swanstone, Wilsonart and Formica.


Always Growing!

Accomplishments The truss plant finished up a 1.5 million dollar expansion. This expansion included an upgraded floor truss machine, a new wall panel line, a new computerized Omni Miser II linear saw, two horizontal auto truss stackers, 48 more feet of truss table with computerized truss jigging on it, and 355 lineal feet of four tiered lumber racking. To deliver that additional product, we purchased one semi, two new stretch roll-off truss trailers, and three drop deck trailers. We added a truss estimator, a wall panel estimator and designer, joining our existing two truss designers, all of whom will service both the Nebraska and Colorado truss and wall panel plants.

Initiatives Our goals this year are to be more efficient and profitable and grow our market in these challenging times. We are continuing to expand our customer list and are looking into the Lincoln and Omaha markets. Our wall panel line is still new in our market but continues to grow with word of mouth and by our great salesmen. Spelts Schultz engineered trusses and wall panels will continue to grow while the competitors will continue to fall by the wayside because of our great team members - they are second to none!

Accomplishments • Assembled top-flight sales, design, estimating, support, and management team with over 125 years combined experience. • Opened lumberyard operation in June, followed by state of the art manufacturing plant for trusses and wall panels in September. • Established critical relationships with all major building materials vendors in the region enabling us to compete successfully on price and product assortment.
