Transforming Spaces Sustainably

Our product is designed with consideration for the environment and society. The issue of vacant houses in Japan is severe, as the number of vacant houses continues to increase due to population decline. We focused on this social issue and started product design. The product utilizes the surplus vacant houses to improve the existing space. Specifically, we use the wood from vacant houses to create lighting fixtures. By using sustainable lighting products instead of the outdated lighting fixtures, we transform the stagnant modern space into a more beautiful one.

To solve Japan's problem of vacant houses, we have developed an environmentally and socially conscious product. We make lighting fixtures by utilizing resources that can be obtained from vacant houses. As a result, we can transform modern spaces into more beautiful and sustainable ones.

We offer two types of products in two different lengths. One is a mille-feuille type lighting fixture that uses 2mm acrylic placed at 10mm intervals to allow light to be emitted from the back. The other is a sandwich type that uses one 6mm acrylic sheet sandwiched between pieces of wood, allowing sharp light to escape. Our lighting fixtures emit soft light from sustainable wood materials, transforming everyday spaces into extraordinary ones.

Background

In 2025, the baby boomer generation, which accounts for 5% of the population, will be over 75 years old, and the proportion of the elderly will rise to nearly 20%. Based on this, referring to the fact that the average life expectancy of Japanese men and women is 84 years (announced by the World Health Organization in 2015), it is expected that the number of baby boomer deaths will increase at a stretch from around 2035. Therefore, the fate of the residential area depends on how the child generation (baby boomer junior generation) and relatives who inherit after the death of the baby boomer generation handle their parents' home. Although it depends on the location and size of the house, after the death of the baby boomer generation, the inherited generation has already left their parents' home and often has their own home, and the number of cases of living in the inherited parents' home is decreasing. increase. Therefore, if the sale and rent of the parents' house does not proceed, Japan has a so-called "time bomb" that the number of vacant houses will increase all over the city in the near future. According to Nomura Research Institute, if vacant homes are not removed or effectively used for purposes other than housing, about 8.2 million vacant homes will be vacant in 2013, and about 1400 in 10 years (2023). It is predicted that the vacant house rate will be 21.0%, about 21.5 million in 20 years (2033), and the vacant house rate will be 30.2%.
