84 Lumber Rolls Out Big Plans

After opening 23 stores so far this year, 84 Lumber Co. will break ground in November on l2 more pro yards.

Over the next | 2 to 18 months, 84 Lumber plans to open at least 25 additional stores and five new component manufacturing plants in the Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Indianapolis and Chicago markets.

84 Lumber's Production Builder Services will also expand this year with a second plant in Indianapolis and a new facility in Atlanta. The division provides component manufacturing, installation and an on-site contractor service rep, and other services to large-scale homebuilders.

The latest new store opening was August 27 in Conroe, Tx. Headed by manager Mark Olivani and co-manager Doug Vail, the 28,000-sq. ft. store carries more than 8,000 products and also has an on-site door hanging facility.

84 Lumber also opened Aug. 16 in Columbus, Ga., and in April in l0 states, including Tx., Ok., Al., and Md.

S.C. Growers Urge l-P Investigation

The South Carolina attorney general's office is investigating allegations by small state timber growers that International Paper is engaged in unfair market practices. reports the Vancouver Sun. The attorney general's office asked the state's chief forester to investigate the claims.

The growers allege that I-P has restrained trade, set timber prices and utilized its size to kill competitive bidding. They also claim I-P has used "veiled threats" to cut off timber suppliers who do not supply accounting information.

U.S. Forest Landowners Association president Kevin Larson said there are "pockets" in the South where large companies restrict the forces of the open timber market.
