Giving Back at Bok The Holiday season is a great time to support organizations that give give back to our community—now, and year-round! Bottle Underground Bottle Underground is a communit y-base d recycling nonprofit dedicated to reducing waste and finding optimal end markets for postconsume r glass. To support their mission, you can donate directly on their website. They also have open drop off times on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and every other Saturday for community members to donate their bottles and jars.
Garces Foundation When the world feels chaotic and it’s hard to know how to help, we can still make life better on a local scale for our more vulnerable neighbors. The Garces Foundation is a community-based, nonprofit organization committed to providing Philadelphia’s immigrant population the healthcare, education, and support to empower them to fulfill their potential as citizens and enjoy the highest possible quality of life. You can serve as a lifeline for Philadelphia’s immigrant families by investing in food, health and education programs: $20 feeds a family of four for a week with fresh, healthy food, $60 covers medical and dental care for one patient, $200 pays for one student to go to school, and $3,000 pays for an entire health clinic. Every dollar makes a life-changing difference! garcesfoundation.org / @garcesfoundation
Visit their website to learn how to donate glass, become a sponsor, or volunteer at their events, where you can help them intake and clean bottles as they come into the facility! bottleunderground.com @bottleunderground
Girls Inc. Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey inspires girls and young women to be strong, smart, and bold. Each year they serve over 2,500 local girls ages 5-18 free of charge by partnering with schools and the Philadelphia Juvenile Justice Service Center, as well as corporations and social impact organizations to deliver programs. Since moving to Bok in 2021, Girls Inc. has been strengthening their community reach with a dedicated space to host programs, including annual summer camps. In 2024 they will be expanding their footprint in the building with a STEM lab and early literacy space. Through their initiative Project Accelerate, Girls Inc. supports their alumni through critical transitions— from high school through college, and from college to career. A key part of this project is providing young women with internships in career fields they are interested in—many of the 39 interns they placed in 2023 were with organizations right here at the Bok! To learn more about hosting an intern, as well as other group or individual volunteer opportunities, contact Lily Knoerzer, Partnership Manager at lknoerzer@girlsincpa-nj.org. girlsincpa-nj.org / @girlsincphilly
Art Sphere Inc. Art Sphere Inc., founded in 1998, is a non-profit using the arts to uplift underserved communities in Philadelphia. They offer free resources and interactive in-person and online programs for kids of all ages, turning any space into a classroom. Many of Art Sphere’s programs are in local recreation centers, making it possible for neighborhood youth to attend. Their mission is to engage youth and empower communities through creativity—really making a difference! Support Art Sphere’s mission by donating today! artsphere.org / @artsphereinc

DIY: Make Tinsel Pom-Poms with The Craftship There’s nothing more special than adding a handmade touch to your holiday party or giftgiving. We turned to DIY pro Steph Kimmel of The Craftship to teach us how to make the perfect pom-pom—ideal for a garland, New Year’s decor, or even festive earrings!
Supplies
thecraftship.com / @the.craftship
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Wrap pom-pom maker in yarn of choice.
Wrap coordinating tinsel around the maker just like the yarn.
Using sharp scissors, cut through the yarn between the layers of the pom-pom maker.
Tip: wrapping 2 strands at once goes faster! Use multiple colors for a more vibrant look.
Step 4
Step 5
Step 6
Tie a surgeon’s knot* around the middle of the pom-pom. Double knot tightly.
Remove pom-pom from maker.
Fluff and trim to desired shape and length.
*Surgeon’s knot: start like a regular knot to tie your shoe, but pull the end through the loop again. Pull tight, double knot.
