LIVING A LIFE OF IMPACT

With Nikki Harrison

She stewards the vision of Christian creatives of color offering strategic planning, project management, and operations consulting to those businesses that are great at creating and having a vision for something.

But what they need is support when it comes to the logistics.

They have this big vision and a big dream but are wondering how they will get it all done and how will they manage all of the moving pieces.

That's where Nikki comes in.

She will help you clarify your vision, and create a plan for you to achieve that vision.

BuildingHerDream.com 9
HARRISON

Thank you for chatting with me today. I always like to start by asking if you could have the perfect dream life, what would it look like?

My dream life is a life of impact–that is truly my dream. I want to be fruitful. As a Christian by name and by deed, actually living the lifestyle of Christianity and of a disciple, I'm called to be fruitful. To use my gifts, talents, resources, and my time here on this Earth to produce positive results from those things. That is my Ultimate Dream.

I want to hear “well done” at the end of it all. I want to be able to hear “You did a great job with your challenge. I'm proud of you. Now come into my rest.”

So am I currently living my dream? I feel like my dream is ongoing. It's not fulfilled until I'm not here anymore because I'm never going to stop the work of making an impact and serving other people. I can’t say I’m living my dream but I'm moving progressively toward it for sure.

That sounds beautiful. What is your long-term vision for Thrive Business Support?

of color. Currently, I'm a team of one and I provide the strategy and management for my clients.

Managing everything their business has– the projects, the people, and the processes. In addition to building the strategy that that those processes, people, and projects are going to run on.

But eventually, I would also like to offer support at the implementation level. I would be building that strategy out, and managing a capable team to implement the plan on my end. Currently, I can serve clients that already have a team or that are willing and able to bring on a team. And I can help them hire and source the candidates. I want it to be all a one-stop shop.

It sounds like your work keeps you busy. Do you think it's possible to maintain a healthy work-life balance as an entrepreneur?

The long-term vision is to be a one-stop operation shop for creative visionaries

I absolutely think that it is possible to maintain a harmony amongst the roles that you are called to. Maybe not so much a balance because balance lends itself to equality. It means the different areas of your life are going to receive equal weight and I don't necessarily think that is possible. But I do think that harmony is possible.

COVER STORY: LIVING A LIFE OF IMPACT WITH NIKKI HARRISON
BuildingHerDream.com 10

Each responsibility carries its own note and then they come together and make something really beautiful and harmonious.

The way that I attempt to do that is by prioritizing my roles and responsibilities. I list them all out. Do a brain dump if I need to get everything out of my head. Then rank them or put them in order of what needs to be the most important and then form routines and plans around those priorities.

So if you build yourself a custom hierarchy of what needs and responsibilities must be met, and if you build your life around it, it won't feel

like this balancing act that you need to do.

The top priorities are getting the attention they need and the lower priorities are also getting the attention they need. And those things may increase or decrease depending on the season of your life that you're in.

You are a mom to young children. Many parents in your position struggle with mom guilt while trying to run their businesses. How do you prevent that?

The short answer is that I don’t. I be around here feeling GUILTY. I just lean on my hierarchy. I lean on the fact that I

COVER STORY: LIVING A LIFE OF IMPACT WITH NIKKI HARRISON
BuildingHerDream.com 12

have set my priorities out. I've ranked things and I'm giving the attention to my responsibilities in the order that they need that attention.

My kids are very high at the top of my list. When mom guilt is tapping on my shoulders asking where are your kids–I remind myself that my kids were poured into this morning and they will be poured into this afternoon.

Although I'm not in mom mode 24/7, I am in mom mode when I need to be. So I'm not missing anything. I'm not less of their mom because I'm also a business owner. I can be both and I am both. The God who assigned me Mom and business owner gave me all the equipment and the skills that I need to handle it all. But I don't have to handle them all the same way. I just remind myself that “Girl, you are doing a great job.”

We all know that entrepreneurship comes with lots of ups and downs. What’s a challenge you’ve faced along your journey?

fear, imposter syndrome, excuses, and quite frankly, laziness.

Me focusing too much on circumstances rather than my calling really delayed the start of this official business for years. I have overcome that now because I push past my fears. I understand that I can do it scared. I don't have to wait until I'm not afraid anymore or nervous anymore to move forward in my business. I can do it scared. It can be imperfect and it can still be good.

Do you believe being an introvert has affected your business?

Absolutely. Both when we’re talking about energy and when we're talking about boldness. Being an introvert has affected my business energetically because sometimes I am just too tired to do all of the socializing that entrepreneurship requires.

A challenge was simply starting the business and doing the thing that I know I'm called to do. That was a very big struggle for me having to deal with

It is a field of relationships with your peers, prospects and clients, partners, and vendors – there are so many relationships to form and nurture. It can be energetically very draining for an introvert like myself who needs quite a substantial bit of time to recharge. My relationship-building moves slower than extroverts.

COVER STORY: LIVING A LIFE OF IMPACT WITH NIKKI HARRISON BuildingHerDream.com 14

In terms of the boldness of it, I'm shy by nature. When I'm doing an interview like this or speaking, people can't tell that I am very shy.

Needing to be so visible for my company is difficult; it is challenging. I enjoy being in the background. Needing to be in the spotlight can sometimes hinder me from even pursuing specific opportunities. I'm pushing away from that but it is a thing that exists.

Nikki, if people want to work with you, how can they do so?

There are a couple of ways to work with me. The first way is a one-on-one VIP day where I give you the clarity of your vision. We go over what you want to be true in the world, what you’re doing about it, and how you’re going to move as you tackle it.

The step after that is project management. We've plotted out your projects and clarified your vision, now let's take one of those projects and actually get it done. We work together for 90 days just to get it done. We're not creating a new plan. We're not messing with the one that we already have. We are implementing and I'm able to manage your team and keep track of the strategy that we devised.

The most comprehensive way to work with me is just where I come full time into your business as a strategic partner to you and I manage all the people, the projects, and the processes that in your business according to that original strategic plan that we form. So those are the three ways to work with me at this moment.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us, Nikki.

INTROVERTS
CAN HAVE A COMFY

INSIDER

Overflowing workload

You can’t manage your task list. Things are not getting done. You’re losing clients and turning down work. Failure to meet deadlines is a sign that you indeed require a helping hand.

If you find that you no longer have the same enthusiasm to wake up early and hit the ground running due to the mountainous tasks at hand, then it is time for you to seek help. Instead of risking your business reputation with the notion that you are the only one who can get things done, hire an assistant who will help you free some time for you to concentrate on other demanding business operations.

No growth

Your business is stagnant because you don’t have time to focus on growth. If you’re doing all the things, you can’t do the most important thing. You’re spending the majority of your time on nonrevenue generating activities. For every business to continue running smoothly, money is required. As a solopreneur, you are not an exception. You got rent, bills, as well as other operational costs for your business It is paramount to spend quality time on tasks that will bring more revenue to your business

Increased complaints

You might be receiving customer complaints and bad reviews. The quality of your products and services are at risk.

BuildingHerDream.com 18

6 SIGNS YOU SHOULD MAKE YOUR FIRST HIRE ARTICLE
Running your business on your own is the most fulfilling part of solopreneurship. You are working without supervision, you have flexible working hours, and the best part–the profit is all yours. However, as the business grows, you realize that things are becoming more demanding. Keeping up with tasks that you once enjoyed becomes a daunting task. You want to build a team so that you can have a business that runs without you. But you may be wondering at what point in your business you should start. Here are six signs that you may need to hire someone:

This is a tale-tale sign that you are not up to the game. While a bad product review from your customers can hurt, it should be your wake-up call that you need to delegate.

Customers require consistency, and delivering to their expectations is the only thing they need from you. However, with your business growth, you have gotten overwhelmed, and you no longer give your customers the expected satisfaction they were used to before. You need not hurt your business anymore; hire some support.

Skill gaps

You’re missing an essential skill needed to perform a role, and you don’t have the time to learn it Even with the internet, sometimes it isn’t easy for one to master all the skills. Due to time constraints, an attempt to grasp them will be at the expense of your business. If you find it difficult to operate your daily business activities due to technical and skill gaps, it is the ripe time for you to find support.

No vacations

As a solopreneur, it is hard to take a break for a day or two. You are constantly terrified of losing customers, business falling apart, and the anxiety of not having cash in the bank account upon return. However, with the burnout of working without rest closing in, there is a need for you to find a replacement to stand in for you when you are gone.

Finding a suitable replacement for the right tasks will help you a great deal Reaching out to people with the same business can help you in outsourcing the right candidate.

Financially stable

Many solopreneurs experience financial strains especially, at the start of their businesses. Therefore the need to seek an extra employee to help them out becomes a scary thought. As the business grows, more profit is made, and you may find that you have enough money to sustain wages. If that is the case, it may be the right time to expand your business and seek the endless benefits that come from expansion.

While it may bring contentment to run your business on your own, it is essential to know when the work on your plate is too much for you to handle alone. Sourcing for an expert or a virtual assistant will allow you to grow a more sustainable business

MAKING FRIENDS AS AN ADULT: IT'S

Making friends as an adult can seem like a daunting task, especially for us introverts who may find it difficult to put ourselves out there. We often hear people say that it was so much easier to make friends when we were kids. But guess what? It's not as hard as you might think! In fact, with a little bit of effort and an open mind, you can build a strong social circle in no time. So, let's dive into some tips on how to make friends as an adult

Join groups or clubs related to your interests

One of the most effective ways to make friends is by joining groups or clubs that share your interests Whether you're into hiking, painting, knitting or playing board games, there's likely a group out there for you. Not only will you be able to bond with others over your shared passion, but you'll also have a great time doing something you love!

To find these groups, you can start by searching online platforms like Meetup or Facebook. You can also check out local community centers or bulletin boards at your favorite coffee shops. Remember, the key here is to be proactive and not be afraid to put yourself out there.

Attend social events

Even if socializing isn't your favorite activity, attending social events can be a great way to meet new people. This could be anything from a friend's birthday party to a networking event or even a local festival When you're at these events, remember to be open and approachable. Smile, make eye contact, and engage in conversations with those around you.

Don't be afraid to take the initiative and introduce yourself to others. A simple "Hi, I'm [Your Name]. How do you know the host?" or "What brings you to this event?" can go a long way in breaking the ice and starting a conversation.

Volunteer

Volunteering is not only a great way to give back to your community, but it's also an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people. Choose a cause that you're passionate about and find local organizations that need volunteers. This could be anything from helping out at a food bank to walking dogs at an animal shelter.

When you volunteer, you'll be surrounded by people who share your values and interests, making it easier to form connections and friendships. Plus, working together towards a common goal can create a strong bond between people.

Take a class or course

Taking a class or course can be a great way to meet new people while also learning a new skill. Consider taking a cooking class, language course, or art class. These types of classes often provide opportunities for group work and discussions, making it easier to connect with others.

Join online communities

In today's digital age, there are plenty of online communities and forums that have opportunities to connect with others Joining online groups related to your interests can provide a chance to connect with others who share your values and passions. These online communities can also be a great way to find local events and meetups.

ARTICLE BuildingHerDream.com 23

Be yourself

It's important to be true to yourself when making new friends. Trying to impress others or fit in is tempting, but true friendships are built on authenticity and trust. Embrace your quirks, your passions, and your unique personality. Focus on being authentic and genuine. After all, the best friendships are formed when we can be our true selves with one another. The right people will appreciate you for who you are

Take the initiative

If you happen to meet someone you really connect with, don't be afraid to take the initiative and suggest hanging out or getting together. I know, it can be a bit nervewracking to put yourself out there like that, but always remember that the other person is probably feeling the same way. They might be just as eager to spend more time with you but are too shy to make the first move.

So, go ahead and propose a fun activity or a casual get-together It could be something as simple as grabbing a coffee, going for a walk, or checking out a local event. The important thing is to keep it low-pressure and relaxed.

If they happen to say no, don't worry and don't take it personally. People have busy lives, and sometimes the timing just isn't right. Keep in mind that this one "no" doesn't mean they're not interested in building a friendship with you. Just be patient and try again another time.

The key here is to keep trying and putting yourself out there. Making friends as an adult might take a bit more persistence, but it's definitely worth the effort. It's important to have a supportive network of friends to share life experiences with and provide emotional support. So, don't be discouraged, and keep reaching out to those you connect with. Before you know it, you'll have a solid group of friends to share your life with!

"It Starts With I" Affirmations Book Author

BUILDING HER DREAM LIFE INTERVIEW

With Sutton C. McCraney

Sutton C. McCraney is the creator of The Offer Mastery Academy. She lives in Morocco and has been in business for two years.

At BHD, we believe in building businesses that provide us with the life of our dreams. Sutton, what does your dream life look like?

My dream life looks like being healthy, surrounded by my family living comfortably, and being able to share that comfort with others through charity work. I'm still working on achieving a level of comfort to where I can give more to others.

Tell us about the work you do.

I love working with Mama CEOs and coaches to help them grow their businesses whether it's through my signature coaching program or my virtual assistance agency.

What inspired you to start this business?

Life is a series of meandering paths. After I separated from the United States Air Force in 2019, as a certified personal trainer I wanted to open a women's fitness boutique in Morocco.

Well, money was funny and when the pandemic hit, that delayed my dream even more Although I was disappointed, I realized that wasn't the path for me I decided to pivot into the coaching and consulting space.

My "why," whether it was opening a fitness boutique or coaching has always been to help women achieve what once seemed difficult and be an example for my 4 children while building a social and financial legacy

Speaking of children, do you suffer from "mom guilt" and if so, how do you handle it while running your business?

INTERVIEW
BuildingHerDream.com 33

I'm in a new season in my life. I don't really suffer from "mom guilt" in my entrepreneurial space. In fact, I had chronic "mom guilt" when I was in the military But now that I'm home with my children 24/7, they are homeschooled and I make a point to involve them with the business so they feel included Also, I have mental check-ins with myself, like, Ok, Sutton. Close the computer and play PS4 with the kids and just sit and talk with them.

It's all about balance and prioritizing what is truly important.

Do you think being an introvert has affected your business?

Wow, that's one reason it took me so long to actually do anything in my coaching business

I was so worried about being seen by other people. I'm a very private person and do not like social media. I felt like I would be losing a part of myself by sharing parts of myself with the world. I eventually got out of my own way and hired a business mindset coach to support and hold me accountable while I

did the scary things.

What has been the most rewarding experience for you as an entrepreneur?

Two experiences have been the most rewarding. Seeing my children's curiosity grow as Mama does her business on the computer and has clients Hearing them talk about having their own business one day is what keeps me inspired and for me is the real meaning behind leaving a legacy.

Seeing the growth within myself. Doing things and challenging myself in ways I didn't think were possible. Accomplishing certain things when you're in the rat race is different because it's forced on you. When you're out there on your own making moves, it says more about your character and who you can become

What have you learned about yourself and your business throughout your journey?

I've learned that I'm capable of more than I allow myself room for. I've also learned that I have to set boundaries for myself because I tend to get obsessive about things

What advice would you give to other introverted women who are just starting their own businesses?

Do the scary things. Lean into the fear and do not seek perfection. Flirt with wreckless abandonment not caring what others think

From day 1 in your business really think about who you are now and who you need to be to accomplish your goals. Start operating in that new version of yourself I call her the "future successful self. " Put yourself in alignment now for the future.

If someone is interested in working with you, what's the best way to do that?

The Offer Mastery Academy is my signature program designed to help new Mama CEOs craft their unique offer and sell it without compromising family time. They can reach me via Facebook.

BUILDING HER DREAM LIFE INTERVIEW

With Jorita "Cuenique" Smith

Jorita "Cuenique" Smith is the creator of The CueNection. She lives in Chicago and has been in business for 20 years.

At BHD, we believe in building businesses that provide us with the life of our dreams. Cuenique, what does your dream life look like?

My dream life is one where I never have to want for my needs and can continue spending quality time with my family. I am living part of my dream as I spend quality time and have open communication with my family.

Tell us about the work you do.

I am a Digital Media Production Artist/DJ and aspiring motivational speaker. I help those who may have gone through life experiences they feel they could never grow from. As a person who comes from a background of no nurture and limited amounts of love, I want to let them know it's possible to grow from it and be your best self

That’s wonderful. What inspired you to get started?

My inspiration came from growing up in Chicago in the 90s. There was a lack of love and nurture in the home. It showed in our everyday lives. We were latchkey kids. We had to grow up fast and danger was literally on every corner

The more I continued to grow up and have my own child, I realized the problem comes from not having a nurturing parent/guardian. I poured my soul into the arts and made sure I strived to see a better day where I could tell my story through my medium choices to help others overcome past traumas and live their best lives

Do you suffer from "mom guilt?" How do you handle it while running your business?

Having been raised by a workaholic mother, I made sure to not adopt the same behaviors so that I would not develop

"mom guilt". I handle not developing it by making sure I spend time with my son doing things he likes and carving out mom/son time for him to just be able to talk freely

The best way to combat mom guilt is to make time. That's what they will remember the most, not how much work you put into your passion or "the roof over ya head, clothes on ya back, and food ya belly!"

They need more than that, they need YOU

Has being an introvert affected you as an entrepreneur?

Being an introvert affected my business because I don't like to be out at functions. To be honest, most functions feel stuffy and I feel out of place. I use this to my advantage as it puts me in the position to meet the right people

I have learned that doing business and having a successful partnership truly depends on the vibe If we aren't vibing in the first minute of meeting each other, it just may not be a fit.

introverted entrepreneur needs to develop?

COMMUNICATION! I may not like to go out all the time That is expressed in communication Even if I never make it out to a formal event, I have to be able to effectively communicate with the people I choose to do business with

Introverts are already looked at in a light that makes us seem difficult to work with. Being able to communicate will quell any thoughts one may have about working with us

How do you balance your need for solitude and alone time with the demands of your work?

I look at the day ahead and plan accordingly. This may require me to wake up earlier than everyone just to catch two to three hours of quiet time or even stay behind from a family outing.

It takes sacrifice to make a business grow, however, we shouldn't sacrifice our physical and mental health for it

What I have learned about myself and my business throughout this journey is that I'm stronger than I really knew Failure isn't failure to me I tried something and it didn't work. I look for another way and that way makes THE way. I may think or even feel like quitting, but the Chica-GO in me won't let me stop

What advice would you give to other introverted women entrepreneurs who are just starting?

Don't be hard on yourself

Don't give up on yourself. Take time to grow and make mistakes. Communicate effectively and do it with confidence You got this, Sis!

Better Brain Health What Every Brain N.E.E.D.S.

My great grandmother used to say, "I may be small, but I carry a BIG stick!" Our brain could have the same mantra. It's about the size of two fists but uses 20% of your body's energy. Your brain doesn't rest like we rest. In fact, it's actually quite active when we're asleep. It's a workaholic that we pay little attention to, unless it starts sputtering. That can be a big mistake.

Poisons in our soil, water, air, food, and cleaning products are toxic to our brains Still, our brain is expected to handle its business. And it does. But how well and how long depends on if it's given what it N.E.E.D.S., what I call the "5 Keys to Brain Health: Nutrition, Exercise, Engagement, Destressing (which includes detox), and Sleep.”

Coming up short in any of these areas causes deterioration and accelerated aging.

Berniece Hunt is a certified Brain Health Professional and founder of Keep Your Brain Sharp She lives in California with her husband, Oliver, who was an unexpected catalyst for her journey into brain health Her 30 years of teaching has equipped her for "such a time as this", as she presents sustainable lifestyle changes that support a better brain Connect with her at

And within each of these areas are subgroups. Say what? I know, it's like peeling an onion. But the good news is that whatever you don't know, you can learn, and whatever you're not doing, you can start doing.

And, just so you know, it's never too early or too late to start Here's a question: If you had to climb over terrain, and you had a choice of walking over a rolling hill or hiking up a steep mountain, which would you choose? Changes in your brain start a lot sooner than you think. Babies are born with over 200 toxins already in their blood. Researchers have found visible damage in 20-year olds, even though they don't have symptoms

A steep mountain takes a lot more effort, time, and diligence than a rolling hill. The sooner you start, the better

So let's start with nutrition. You've heard of eating from the rainbow. Take that to heart Colors represent nutritional variety

get the majority of their meals from less than 20 plants, with nearly half their calories from just three

Do you know how many edible plants are available on God's green earth? Over 20,000! I've created an acronym (Yep, I'm the acronym queen), to remember the variety of foods you should be eating regularly. My word is "C.AM.B.O.W.S" (think of Campbell's soup, with a twist). Each letter represents a group of foods:

And sunlight-our best source of vitamin D3 is something a lot of us go out of our way to avoid. Supplements, to the rescue! I'm talking about vitamin D3, vitamin B-complex (especially B12), Omega-3s, and a quality, whole-food supplement. Get what you can from food but know that there's a strong chance you'll need supplements to get you over the hump.

Pigging out on only one or two colors inevitably causes nutritional deficiencies. White, brown, and pale yellow are the predominant colors on too many plates. Most Americans

Meat/Mushrooms/Meat substitutes

Berries/Beans-Legumes/BVitamins

Omegas/Healthy Oils

Water SeedsNuts/Spices/Supplements.

Eating from these groups gives you a whole lot more than 20 plants and the nutrition your brain needs. You can get a detailed list of C.A.M.B.O.W.S foods by signing up for my free Resource Library

Depleted soil, agricultural issues, food deserts, sensitivities, manufacturing processes, and budget concerns make it extremely difficult to get enough nutrients from our food. And

I can't leave nutrition without talking about water. It transports our nutrients and helps convert them to energy Our brain is about 75% water and can't function without it. Just 2% less than what it needs reduces its efficiency. Best practices are to: 1) Drink one glass when you wake up in the morning, 2) Avoid being thirsty by sipping water every 20 minutes or so, 3) Eat lots of water-rich fruits and vegetables, 4) Try to daily drink half of your body weight in ounces and 5) Reduce or eliminate alcohol, caffeine, and caffeinated teas - they're stealing your water!

Do you remember what the first "E" stands for? Exercise. It's the fountain of youth. So why don't we see adults exercising more, instead of less, as they age?

Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your brain.

It creates BDNF, what experts call Miracle Grow for your brain. BDNF increases the production of new brain cells Cardiovascular and strengthening exercises top the list, but there are actually 5 types of exercise that your brain needs: cardio, strength (weight training), stretching, balance, and coordination (eyehand or eye-foot). For added benefits, do them outside whenever possible.

Next is Engagement It's moments of discovery, learning, problem-solving, pleasure or satisfaction. We give it to our kids but forget about ourselves as we age. But it's what our brain thrives on Doing the same things, the same way doesn't challenge your brain. Trying new recipes, making repairs, observing nature, working on a hobby or new skill, singing in a choir, traveling, calling a friend, volunteering, etc. challenges your brain. Get into the habit of asking 2 questions at the end of each day: "What did I learn today?" and "Who did I love on today?" Both are signs of engagement.

keeps you stressed so, if that's you I hope you hear me when I say, "Make time for yourself." Running yourself ragged, regardless of the reason, is not good for anyone. Your loved ones want you around, with your brain intact. If your brain breaks, it will change your role from bearing the burden to being the burden Learn to close shop at a reasonable hour and find time within your day, to relax, breathe easy, and destress.

Now for Detox Slowly start to address toxic food, environments, and commercial products. Rome wasn't built in a day. Get familiar with Dirty Dozen/Clean 15 foods, use oldschool cleaning products (baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, etc.), and look for nontoxic versions of skin and hair care products.

Last but not least is Sleep Your goal is to not use prescribed or over-the-counter sleep aids. Sleep experts say to allow at least 10 consecutive weeks of a lifestyle strategy before throwing it out with the bath water. It may not take that long, but be prepared.

times more active while you sleep. Not giving your brain the "nightshift" time it needs is like firing the clean-up crew at a busy restaurant That "A" rating won't be there for long. Over 90% of us need 7-9 hours of practically interrupted sleep every night (one bathroom trip is okay)

I've got a list of 10 things that I call "non-negotiables" regarding sleep. One is not well-liked but extremely important. I call it "screens-off " Turn off all bluelight screens (ex : computer, cell phone, smart tv, etc.) for at least 1-2 hours before you get into bed. During that time go "old school" with real books or magazines, board games, hobbies, chores, talking in person or on your landline, etc. Implement this strategy ASAP and your brain will thank you.

"D" is for Destressing, which includes detoxing since toxins create stress that definitely damages your brain Being overworked or a workaholic

Settling for poor-quality sleep is one of the worst things you could do for your brain Your private immune system is 10

So there you have it A dose of what every brain N E E D S I know it sounds like a lot and we've only touched the surface. But what's the alternative? Not good. On the other hand, if you learn what to do, come up with a plan, and work that plan, you can age gracefully. And know that It's easier and your chances of success will be higher if you have an accountability partner. Not too many good things happen in the back, in the dark I'd love to hear from you.

In today's hyperconnected world, where technology infiltrates every aspect of our lives, finding moments to unplug and recharge has become increasingly important. Continuous exposure to digital devices and constant connectivity can take a toll on our well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life. Here we’ll explore the significance of unplugging, the benefits it brings, and practical strategies to embrace moments of disconnection and recharge in our hyperconnected world.

The Importance of Unplugging

In a world of constant notifications, information overload, and digital distractions, carving out time to unplug is essential for our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Unplugging allows us to detach from the demands of technology, create space for introspection, and rejuvenate ourselves.

Here are a few reasons why unplugging is crucial:

Unplugging and Recharging in a Hyperconnected World ARTICLE BuildingHerDream.com 48

Mental and Emotional

Restoration:

Continuous exposure to screens and the digital world can lead to cognitive overload and heightened stress levels Unplugging provides an opportunity to clear our minds, reduce anxiety, and restore mental and emotional balance.

Enhanced Focus and Productivity:

Unplugging allows us to eliminate the distractions that arise from constant notifications, emails, and social media. By stepping away from technology, we can regain focus, boost productivity, and engage in deep work.

Strengthened Relationships: Being present in the moment without the constant urge to check our devices fosters deeper connections with the people around us. Unplugging creates space for meaningful conversations, quality time with loved ones, and cultivating genuine connections

Strategies for Unplugging and Recharging

Establish Tech-Free Zones. Designate specific areas in your home or specific time blocks in your day as tech-free zones. For example, create a rule of no devices at the dinner table or

allocate a portion of your day for screen-free activities such as reading, hobbies, or spending time in nature.

Practice Digital Detox Days. Set aside dedicated days where you completely disconnect from technology. Use this time to engage in activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, such as meditation, exercising, pursuing creative endeavors, or simply enjoying leisurely moments

Set Boundaries. Establish clear boundaries around your technology use. Define specific times when you will check emails or engage with social media, and avoid mindless scrolling during designated work or relaxation periods Communicate these boundaries to friends, family, and colleagues to manage expectations and encourage respect for your unplugged time.

Create Rituals for Unplugging.

Incorporate rituals into your daily routine that signal the start and end of technology use. This could include meditation or journaling in the morning before reaching for your devices or engaging in a winddown routine that excludes screens in the evening These rituals help set the tone for

intentional unplugging and recharging.

Engage in Mindful Activities. Explore activities that promote mindfulness and presence

This could include practicing yoga, taking mindful walks, engaging in deep breathing exercises, or immersing yourself in a hobby that allows you to be fully absorbed in the present moment.

Unplugging and recharging in a hyperconnected world is not only beneficial but necessary for our overall well-being and productivity. By consciously creating boundaries, establishing tech-free zones or time blocks, practicing digital detox days, and engaging in mindful activities, we can create an environment that supports our health.

Unplugging every now and then is important to our overall well-being both physically and mentally.

Set realistic goals. It's important to set achievable and realistic goals. Realistic goals can help you stay motivated and avoid frustration. When setting goals, consider both your personal and professional life. For example, if you're balancing a full-time job with raising a family, your plans include spending quality time with your children and meeting your work-related deadlines. Remember to manage your expectations. Many of us hope to achieve many things; if we fall short, we spiral into disappointment. Initially, setting the correct expectation avoids this problem; if we exceed our goals, we are on cloud 9

Prioritize your time. It's essential to prioritize your time based on what is most important to you. Make a list of tasks and decide which ones are urgent and can wait. Allocate your time accordingly, and schedule breaks and time for self-care.

Create boundaries. Establishing boundaries between work and personal life can help you maintain a healthy work-life balance. Boundary creating may involve setting specific working hours and disconnecting from work during your free time. For example, create a designated workspace you use only during working hours if you work from home.

Creating significant boundaries is typically tricky, so start with micro boundaries. Micro boundaries are small boundaries you begin to work up to the substantial boundary An example of this is keeping your phone out of your bedroom. Putting your phone away allows you to create a boundary around not checking your phone for emails and social media at bedtime and as soon as you wake up.

Take breaks. Regular breaks can help you stay focused and maintain energy levels throughout the day. Schedule breaks into your workday, and use this time to do something that enables you to relax and recharge For example, you should walk outside or meditate for a few minutes

How to Create a Work-Life Balance ARTICLE
Managing things like family responsibilities, exercising, personal time, housework, and going to work can be overwhelming, but you can create the balance you desire with a few minor changes.

Learn to say no. It's important to say no to commitments that do not align with your goals or values. For example, if you're already overwhelmed with work, decline an invitation to a social event. Saying no can help you avoid overcommitting yourself and reduce stress.

Practice self-care. Practicing self-care is essential for maintaining your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. Take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and engaging in activities that make you happy. Self-care may include hobbies, exercise, or spending time with loved ones.

Stay organized. Staying organized can help reduce stress and increase productivity. Use tools such as file organizers, planners, or apps to help you prioritize your tasks Make sure to keep your workspace and personal space organized as well.

Make time for hobbies. Pursuing hobbies or interests outside of work can help you unwind and reduce stress.

Make sure to schedule time for hobbies and activities that you enjoy. Hobbies include reading, listening to music, or pursuing a creative outlet

Communicate with your employer. If you're struggling to maintain a work-life balance, it may be helpful to communicate with your employer.

Discuss your concerns and see if any options are available, such as flexible working hours or working from home

Be present. Whether at work or spending time with loved ones, try to be present in the moment. Try focusing on the task and avoiding distractions if you're at work. For example, if you're spending time with your family, put away your phone and converse with them. Living in the present can help you reduce stress and increase your overall happiness.

Remember, creating a worklife balance takes time and effort. It's essential to be patient with yourself to find the right balance. Remember these tips and adjust to find what works best for you.

INTERVIEW

BUILDING HER DREAM LIFE

With Lauren Rose

Lauren Rose launched the “It Hurts to Mom” podcast in 2022 It focuses on parents living with chronic pain and has listeners in 9 countries. Lauren’s dream is to have a successful podcast and blog bringing community and encouragement to other people living with chronic pain

What inspired you to launch the "It Hurts to Mom" podcast?

1 out of 5 people lives with chronic pain, and 1 in 12 people lives with chronic pain that significantly affects their daily lives. I’ve lived with chronic pain for nearly 30 years, and it’s been a very lonely journey. When I had to stop working in 2017, I felt like I had lost my purpose in life and went into a deep depression for two years. As I joined forums and Facebook groups and connected with other people with chronic pain, depression, anxiety, or trauma, I felt joy from commenting on their posts and trying to help.

I started my blog and then my podcast as ways to show people

that even though we have to live with chronic pain, we don't have to suffer from it.

What specific challenges do parents living with chronic pain face, and how does your podcast address those challenges?

Having physical pain means we can’t perform most tasks like we used to, and we usually don’t feel well enough to be a parent. The biggest challenges are trying to figure out how to modify tasks, and taking care of a child while we’re in pain

In my very first podcast episode, I discussed parenting with chronic pain and my top tips in that area. All of my episodes end with some sort of advice or lesson learned, so that my listeners can either find ways to manage their pain better or adjust to life as a parent with chronic pain and illness

Do you think it's possible to maintain a healthy work-life balance as an entrepreneur? If so, how do you do it?

I actually don’t believe in work-life balance. Balance is different for everyone A mom with 3 young children has different priorities than an empty nester or a widow

So, I prefer to call it “work-life integration” or “work-life coordination”. You can’t always have everything all at once, so you often have to set priorities and boundaries to get to

INTERVIEW
BuildingHerDream.com 61

a place where you feel content with both work and home life. That’s not easy, but if you try to be everything that both work and life need you to be, you’ll burn out quickly and not be able to be the best person you can be for either one

Looking back at your journey as an entrepreneur, is there anything you wish you had known or done differently?

I know now that my 2-year bout with deep depression was actually me grieving the loss of my job, my career, my functionality, part of my identity, and my purpose in life. If I’d realized I was grieving at the time, I would have embraced and honored that grief. I would have journaled, cried as much as I needed to, gone to therapy, and really felt my grief

Perhaps the depression wouldn’t have lasted so long if I had been more intentional about processing my emotions. How do you stay motivated and inspired when things don’t go as planned?

I am such a planner, so I thrive on things going as planned! But when they don’t, I have to remember the outcome I want and focus on doing whatever

needs to be done to accomplish that. Success is my motivation and inspiration because for me, failure is not an option.

Do you suffer from mom guilt? How do you handle it while running your business?

Of course! There is a lot of guilt that comes with being a parent with chronic pain and illness. So I have to focus on the things I can do and the things I am doing, instead of what I can’t and am not doing

My daughter is very supportive of my podcast and is good about giving me the space I need to work. When I’m finished in the office, I immediately go say hello to her or give her a hug, so she knows I haven’t forgotten about her

How has being an introvert affected your work?

I debated starting a podcast for nearly a year because being an introvert and not a great public speaker, I doubted myself

But I’ve gotten feedback on how prepared I am for my interviews, and that I ask really great questions. So my ability to think deeply, which is part of my introverted personality, improves my podcast.

What have you learned about yourself and your business throughout your entrepreneurial journey?

I’ve learned that I’m pretty resilient and can make the best of a situation I have received feedback from some podcast listeners that has taught me that what I’m doing is important and appreciated. I believe my new purpose in life is to encourage other people with chronic pain and help them not feel so alone

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. Where can our readers find more information about you?

My "It Hurts to Mom" podcast is on Apple and Spotify You can also find me at www ithurtstomom com and @ithurtstomom on Instagram and Facebook.

We all know that being an entrepreneur is no easy feat, and it can be even more challenging when you're an introvert. Finding a work-life alignment that flows with your natural tendencies can greatly enhance your productivity, well-being, and overall success.

One crucial aspect of achieving this alignment is designing a schedule that caters to your unique personality, allowing you to be more productive and feel more energized throughout the day Let’s explore some tips on how to create your ideal work schedule, so you can thrive in your professional life while staying true to your introverted self.

Understand Your Energy Patterns

The first step in designing your ideal work schedule is to understand your energy patterns As an introvert, you likely have periods of high energy followed by periods of low energy We often draw energy from solitude and internal reflection, which means we may have specific energy patterns throughout the day To maximize productivity, it's essential to identify when you're at your best and schedule your most important tasks during those times.

Start by tracking your energy levels throughout the day for a week or two Take note of when you feel most focused, creative, and alert Once you have a clear understanding of your energy patterns, you can begin to structure your work schedule around them.

Embrace Deep Work

Introverts often excel at deep work, which involves concentrating on a single task for an extended period without distractions This type of work allows you to fully immerse yourself in a project, leading to higher productivity and satisfaction.

To embrace deep work, schedule blocks of uninterrupted time in your work schedule. This could be anywhere from 90 minutes to a few hours, depending on your preferences and the nature of your work During these blocks, eliminate distractions, and focus solely on the task at hand You'll be amazed at how much more you can accomplish when you give yourself the space to dive deep into your work.

DESIGN YOUR IDEAL INTROVERTED WORK SCHEDULE ARTICLE BuildingHerDream.com 66

Integrate Breaks for Recharge

As an introvert, it's crucial to integrate breaks into your work schedule to recharge your mental and emotional batteries These breaks can be as simple as a 10-minute walk outside, a quiet moment to enjoy a cup of tea, or even a short meditation session.

Schedule these breaks throughout your day, especially after periods of intense focus or social interaction. By allowing yourself time to recharge, you'll maintain your energy levels, enhance creativity, and prevent burnout.

Leverage Flexible Work Hours

One of the perks of being an entrepreneur is the ability to set your own work hours. Take advantage of this opportunity to create a work schedule that aligns with your introverted nature.

If possible, structure your workday to accommodate your peak productivity hours and allow for downtime when you need it the most.

Flexibility also enables you to adjust your schedule based on external factors or personal needs that may arise. For example, you might choose to start your day earlier or later than the typical 9-to-5 to avoid peak office hours and enjoy some quiet time at work

Alternatively, you could consider working from home or a quiet co-working space a few days a week, which can provide a more introvert-friendly environment. Just make sure to establish boundaries and communicate your schedule with your team and clients.

Prioritize Self-Care

Introverted entrepreneurs often thrive when they prioritize self-care activities. Incorporate activities such as exercise, mindfulness practices, hobbies, or time spent in nature into your schedule. These activities provide an opportunity for rejuvenation and can help you maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Consider Buffer Time

Introverts generally prefer more relaxed and uninterrupted transitions between activities. Consider adding buffer time into your schedule to avoid feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Buffer time is simply unscheduled time that allows you to catch up on tasks, process information, or decompress after a busy day. Allow for this breathing space between meetings, appointments, or projects to recharge and mentally prepare for the next task. This buffer time can help you maintain a sense of calm and focus throughout the day.

To incorporate buffer time, try blocking off 30 minutes to an hour at the beginning or end of your day Use this time to review your tasks, plan for the next day, or simply unwind and reflect on your accomplishments

Designing a work schedule that caters to your introverted nature can significantly improve your productivity, job satisfaction, and overall well-being. By understanding your energy patterns, embracing deep work, integrating breaks for recharge, leveraging flexible work hours, prioritizing self-care, and considering buffer time, you can create a work environment that allows you to thrive as an introverted woman entrepreneur.

Remember, finding the right balance is a journey of self-discovery and adaptation, so be open to experimenting and adjusting your schedule until you find what works best for you
