Would You Believe? The 20th MBSR Children’s Charities Golf Classic! by Rod Eide
Yes, the kickoff meeting of the 20th MBSR Golf Tournament Committee was held at the Eide home on Monday evening, August 16. Joining Tournament Chair Nan Eide were Rod, Martha Hoffmann, Neil Burns, Cyndi Elders, Penny DiCaro, Marsha Prentice, George Rendon, and President James. Ellen Turnbull and Al Soley were unable to attend that evening. The objectives of the meeting were to select a Venue, set a Date, and assemble a Team to make the event happen. Prior to the meeting several members of the Committee had visited local Golf Clubs and obtained cost and date information from them. The Committee also had financial reports from several recent past MBSR Golf Tournaments to review. Following a couple of hours of discussion, the following decisions were reached: 1) The San Juan Hills Golf Club was selected because of the excellent cost and availability opportunities. The course is also in great shape and conveniently nearby. 2)
Efforts to maximize the number of players, and thereby the NET from the Event, will involve special “partnering” with the Marines from Camp Pendleton. The plan will be to promote payment of Tournament registration fees by sponsors, some sponsors likely playing as well. Our Club’s relationship with the 5th Marines Support Foundation (meaning Terry Rifkin) made this arrangement possible.
The Tournament will be held in early January 2011 to accommodate the availability of the Marines. The specific date will be announced shortly.
3) Formation of the Golf Tournament Leadership Team Organization is in process and will also be announced shortly. Of course every Club member becomes a member of the Team. We have plenty of time to make this event a real winner! Please start thinking about how you can help.

President’s Message
The Program Corner
Well, our 2010/2011 Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary is off and running! Our Avenue of Service Chairs are in full swing getting their committees and their schedule of events together. Lisa Wilson held a great meeting at her home for Community Service and has a full list of community activities that we all can be involved with (Service Above Self).
SCTNOW Attacks the Issue of Child Trafficking
Vocational Chair Nancy Bauman has gathered up almost twenty of us to attend the 2010 District 5320 Business Rotarian of the Year in support of our club nominee, Mitch Jackson. No matter what happens, Mitch, don’t forget you are Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Business Rotarian of the Year! Nancy has also reminded us that right around the corner on November 10th is our Career Day for High School seniors from Dana Hills and Aliso Viejo High Schools. This is a special day for us as professionals to be a mentor for a half a day to these seniors in high school and to give them a glimpse of a future career they might be interested in. Please inform Nancy as soon as possible so we can have strong support for this event.
According to UNICEF, an estimated 2.5 million children — the majority of them girls — are sexually exploited in the multibillion dollar commercial sex industry. Predators seek out vulnerable victims and attract them to the industry through deceitful means. The industry thrives because there is a demand. As a result, victims are left scarred for life.

To explain the issue of child trafficking, one of the fastest growing crimes in the world, Robert Owens, the West Coast Coordinator for SCTNOW, spoke at Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary in August.
Child prostitution and domestic child trafficking are not only global issues, but have a strong local presence. According to the FBI, San Diego is the 8th highest child prostitution area in the nation. This is higher than Las Vegas, Miami and New York City. San Diego is reported to attract human trafficking because it is a large metropolitan area with a high percentage of child runaways and, disturbingly, many paying customers. While most organizations are focused on rescuing the victims of child trafficking, SCTNOW has a different focus. The organization is focused on identifying the predators before the crime is committed. This requires the use of Special Operative Teams represented by the best military, federal and state intelligence and investigative organizations. These teams take on high risk assignments in order to provide authorities with intelligence to locate predators. Their reward is the satisfaction that victims are taken off the street. The message Robert Owens shared was difficult to hear but needs to be told. Going forward, Robert hopes to share this message with high schools, educating teens on how to protect themselves and prevent more victims. For more information, visit sctnow.org.

Ramblings by Neil Burns

MBSR is off to another great year of service, fundraising, and fellowship. We like to emphasize the fellowship which often means good times, good friends and good wine, so for those of you who missed Sharon Baltzell’s Social Committee planning party, you’re already way behind on all three. I could be prejudiced, but whenever you put me in close proximity to several of MBSR’s stunning ladies and a good bottle of wine, I’m rather pleasantly consumed by fellowship. Don’t miss the first social event of the year, Saturday evening September 18th under the stars on Sharon & Dean’s spectacular deck, and if you really want some fellowship, come join the committee, ‘cause the more, the merrier. Welcome back to Joe Fitzgerald who was busy taking one son to start school at Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, and another son to play in one of the finest youth sports tournaments in the world held annually next to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Cyndi and HB (Handsome Bob to the uninitiated) rediscovered some of their youth over the weekend following Martha around the bike paths of San Diego. All had a great time seeing the city from a different perspective, but Bob had to admit that after 2-1/2 hours of non-stop riding, he may have approached a wall. Nevertheless he hung in until they reached C-Level on the bay at Harbor Island and stopped for good food, spectacular views of sailboats and aircraft carriers and, of course, that wine thing again. Hope you all have a great month. We’re off to celebrate Mitch’s nomination as the Business Rotarian of the Year. See you soon. can about our new Avenue of Service, New Generations, and will be attending the President’s meeting this month to receive more information. I’m sure he will update us when he has more information about this Avenue of Service. Thanks John for stepping up as a fairly new member in our club to take on a leadership role! Speaking of members it seems like every week we have potential members attending our weekly meetings. Thanks Linda Hess for getting us all pumped about bringing in potential members! Don’t forget about our South County Rotary Mixer on Thursday, October 7th at Salt Creek Grille from 6 – 8PM. Last year we had a great turnout so let’s make it even better this year! And one last thanks to Kathy Flores and members for supporting her in getting us great speakers for our weekly meetings. They have been awesome! So until next month let’s not forget that we are “Building Communities & Bridging Continents” for the year 2010/2011.
Save these dates! Saturday, November 13: Saturday, November 20: Friday, April 29, 2011: May 21-25, 2011:
