President’s Message by Ellen Turnbull, MBSR President

I want to congratulate Russell Kerr, our MBSR Business Leader of the Year who has been awarded the District’s Business Leader of the Year! Our heartiest congratulations to Russell for he truly exemplifies the Rotary Four Way Test in his actions and deeds though his many contributions to our club and our community. Among Russell’s many contributions is Lobster Fest — it was his inspiration that brought our major fundraiser to our club. Not only has Russell served as our Club President, he has been the president of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce these past two years. And on top of that Russell actively recruits and mentors new members to our club … we are truly fortunate to have Russell!! Indeed, the leadership opportunities through Rotary’s Avenues of Service and Rotary’s influence in our communities and the world are abundant. Every Monarch Beach Rotarian is a leader and each lead in their own unique way. As President, I feel humbled and awestruck by our many Rotary leaders who selflessly serve and make Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary the District’s “Award Winning Club.” Just look at what we are accomplishing right now! • Membership Growth: Kip Horney, our Membership Director, igniting our membership to recruit new members … 3 new members so far this year, Anna Bryson, John Heldman and Heather Gillon … we welcome our new members! Thank you Kip, our membership recruitment goal is right on track! • Annual Golf Tournament: Kip Horney, our Golf Tournament Chair along with his committee members, Cyndi Elders, Rod Eide, Marsha Prentice, Paul Lehrich, Keith Regan and James Littlejohn diligently recruited golfers, gathered silent auction items, sought sponsorships, coordinated registration, etc … this committee did an awesome job!! Plus, all the golfers had fun, the food was great and a beautiful day was had by all at the Talega Golf Course. Remember, through our fundraisers, we can serve our communities locally and internationally!! • Vocational Service: Gary Maxwell, our Vocational Chair is in the midst of organizing our District award winning Career Day scheduled for November 7. Committee members, Penny DiCaro and Bonnie Myers are the “backbone” of this important day with their recruitment and coordination of students, business mentors and drivers! This is a big job providing a great service to our Dana Hills High School students. Vocational Service Committee member Zohreh Behbehani is actively working with Dana Hills High School with the “Student of the Month” awards. Bonnie Myers heads up the Scholarship Committee. She recruits, evaluates and recommends Saddleback College students for scholarship monies to assist in continued on page 2 MBSR meets on Wednesday mornings at 7am at the laguna cliffs marriott in dana point • monarchbeachrotary.com

supporting their college education.

There will be a changing of the guard at the end of 2012 for the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group. Terry Rifkin, Charter Member and Past President of Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary, was elected to become President of the Military Support Organization for 2013. Founding Father of DPSG (and Honorary Rotarian, Pete Hammer) was voted to stay on as Chairman of the Board.

Terry’s inspiration is continually fueled by her great respect for the selfless sacrifices of our Warriors and their families. With continued support from MBSR, and many other patriotic friends in the community, her mission is simple; in the spirit of service, continue to raise funds and create opportunities so that the community can play a role in demonstrating appreciation for the remarkable sacrifices our American Military families are making for our freedom.

• New Generations: John Coffman, our Chair has recruited Cyndi Elders and Jessica Timberlake to join in his leadership of the Dana Hills High School InterAct group. Expect to see many of our InterActors at our Dana Point Senior Center Thanksgiving Luncheon. • International Service: Margarita Martin, our International Chair and her committee including Mark Cruz, Jeannie Hankins, Ricardo Beas, Zohreh Behbehani, Al Soley and Bonnie Myers have identified many worthwhile international service projects and recently awarded $500 to the International Orphan Fund. • Community Service: Linda Hess, our Vocational Chair has organized a great committee including James Littlejohn, Jeannie Hankins, Jessica Timberlake, Keith Regan, Kip Horney, Lisa Wilson, Mike Killebrew, Cyndi Elders, Nancy Baumann, Paul Lehrich, Penny DiCaro, Terry Rifkin and Margarita Martin. Through Community Services, a food drive benefiting South County Outreach was recently completed. Our club donated 103 pounds of food and $385 towards the purchase of food. Our club efforts benefited 22 families of 4 (88 people) for a week! Outstanding!! Thanks to Cyndi Elders and Lisa Wilson for heading up our Annual Dana Point Senior Center Thanksgiving Luncheon scheduled for Saturday, November 17 … this is a another opportunity for all Monarch Beach Rotarians to get involved! • Foundation: Jeannie Hankins has stepped to the plate as our new Chairperson. She comes with much Foundation experience. Roger McGonegal, the District Foundation Chairman will to speak to us on November 14 regarding the Foundation. Linda Hess and Gary Maxwell are serving on Jeannie’s Foundation Committee. • Club Service: Alan Wickstrom, our President Elect and Club Service Chair is updating our website, continually updating our Facebook page and keeping us in the news! Plus, Mary Jeffries is planning a fun Halloween Party and soon to be announced Holiday Party! A big thank you to our Newsletter Editor, Bill Palmer for this newsletter! Penny DiCaro, our Fellowship Chair continually recognizes and sends thoughtful cards to our fellow Rotarians in their time of need. It goes without saying … MONARCH BEACH SUNRISE ROTARIANS ARE AWESOME!

Monster Bash

Tailgate Chili Cook-Off Party at the Annual Angels Rotary Night to End Polio Now Game On Saturday, September 8, on a hot summer afternoon, over 150 Rotarians from throughout Rotary District 5320 gathered under the “Big A” at Angels’ Stadium to tailgate before the annual Angels Rotary Night to End Polio Now game for a Chili Cook-Off. Over a dozen clubs, including our great Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club, gathered to compete for the best chili and to earn the most money in support of Rotary’s End Polio Now program. Our own president-elect, Alan Wickstrom, and his bride, Liz, cooked up Alan’s famous 3-meat chili and our club members served tastes to over 150 Rotarians and their guests. The competition was fierce, but we did not win this year. Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Long Beach, who won the competition. We’ll get ‘em next year. After the tailgate chili cook-off part, we all attended a great Angels baseball game vs the Detroit Tigers that the Angels won. But the real winner was our district’s support for the End Polio Now campaign. This event raised $84,000 to continue the fight to end polio. If you like devilish eggs and decomposed salads, if baked ribabony tickles your ribs and entrails are your entrée, if a Zombie is your cocktail of choice, if I scream and devil’s food cake is your desert, then you HAVE to make it to MBSR’s Halloween party. Bloody Mary Jefferies has organized this feted fete and feast and all are invited. For $20 and a pot luck contribution you can don the costume of your choice, howl at the moon (or moon at the hall) until daybreak (or the police arrive). So Saturday, Oct 27, between the hours of sunset and sunrise, get in touch with your inner ghoul and crawl, fly or creep to Monarch Hills Clubhouse at 58 Corniche Drive in Monarch Beach. We’re all going to have a devilish good time!

Right: Margarita Martin, Liz Wickstrom and Mary Jefferies
