SUNRISE ROTARY ON THE CALIFORNIA RIVIERA

President’s Message

Interact Celebration

by Alan Wickstrom

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES… As the old saying goes, time sure flies when you are having fun! This past year as president of your Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club has been more than fun… it has been a blast! I’m proud to have served our club and the charities we support. This year our club won 3 Rotary District 5320 awards for our service to others. 1st place large club for Community Service (Anita Houston), 1st place Club Service (John Coffman) and 2nd place Vocational Service (Gary Maxwell). WOW!! What a great accomplishment. Thanks to each of you and those that helped them achieve this. As President Elect John Coffman prepares to take the reigns for “his year” as president starting July 1, I want to thank John for all he did to support “my year” as president. YOU ROCK!! Your year as president is going to be fantastic. A big thank you to Gary Maxwell (VP & LobsterFest chair), Michael Maxwell (Sec), Ellen Turnbull (Past Pres) and my dear friend and Rotary sponsor, Nancy Baumann (Treasurer) for her support, wisdom and guidance during this past year. Thank you all!! I want to thank Anita Houston (Community Service), Margarita Martin (International Service), Gary Maxwell (Vocational Service), Linda Hess (Foundation & Orientation), John continued on page 3

On Tuesday, May 27, we held the 1st Annual Year-End Celebration of our DHHS Interact Club. Over 100 members and guests, Interactors and family, and other special guests were in attendance at the Dana Point Senior Center. The event was catered by Ricardo’s Place. As always, the food and service were outstanding. Our thanks to our great member Ricardo Beas for his great support. Prior to the Interact program, a check from our Club to SOCSA was presented to representatives from that organization. The main program included opening comments from Interact President Kate Fulton, a year-in-review video, and a presentation to the Shea Therapeutic Riding Center from the Interact Club. Allison Peterson talked about RYLA and then introduced the Interactors that our Club sponsored for the RYLA camp this year. Each student talked about what attending RYLA meant to them. Jessica Timberlake announced special awards including the Interactor of the Year, which went to Colin Hicks, and the Rookie Interactor of the Year, which went to Rachel Clark. The Interact Club had a great year and participated in over a dozen projects and fund raisers. They raised over $500 for Water for South Sudan and almost $700 for the Shea Center. There were over 80 members on the roster and the Club regularly had over 50 members in attendance at meetings. Our thanks to our Rotary Advisors, Jessica, Allison, Cyndi Elders, and John Coffman for their work with these amazing kids. We also thank Mike Sullivan as the Faculty Advisor who generously turns over his classroom to the Club twice a month.

Rotary Clubs all over the world sponsor Rotaract Clubs and Interact Clubs. Rotaract Clubs are directed toward young people between ages 18 and 30 and can either be college or community based. Interact clubs target middle school and high schools kids to involve them in a service based organization. The Rotary Clubs of Orange County will be celebrating these great organizations of young people in a special event on June 8, 2014. The venue will be the Outdoor Education Center in Irvine and the day will be filled with many fun activities, workshops, and a great speaker. Everyone who wants to show support for these great clubs is invited.

It’s Time for Our Annual Transition Breakfast!

Welcome Back, Penny DiCaro!

The transition breakfast celebrating Alan’s great year will be June 25. Don’t miss this great meeting. Next year’s leadership team will be introduced at the breakfast, but we wanted to give you some advance notice regarding Committee assignments. One of the objectives for next year will be to have every member participate in at least two committees, either as the chair or as a committee member. Rotary has long believed that one of the best ways to retain members is to ensure they are having fun and they are engaged. Committee participation is a big part of this. Committee chairs will be contacting members about joining their committees, but it is equally important that members become involved in things that interest them. Things they even have a passion for. We are hoping that you will consider joining at least one, but hopefully two, of our important committees. Our Board level committees will be (chairs shown in parenthesis):

Presidents Message,

• International (Margarita Martin)

• Vocational (Stephanie McCormick)

Coffman (Club Service & Youth Services) and Carl Linhardt (Membership) for their time and devotion to our club’s success this past year. Thank you to Allison Peterson (Programs), Zohreh Behbehani (Scholarships) John Heldman (Golf Fundraiser Chair), Mary Jeffries (Social), Stephanie McCormick (Newsletter), Russell Kerr (Fine Master), Paul Lehrich (Sergeant of Arms) and John Rose (Attendance).

• Foundation (Mitch Jackson) • Community Service (Anita Houston) • Membership (Allison Peterson) We also have several committees that aren’t Board level, but they are equally important. They will be: • Program (Lisa Sakai) • Attendance (Mike Soliman) • Fellowship (Penny DiCaro) • Info and Orientation (Linda Hess) • Social (Mary Jeffries) Please consider joining one or more of these committees if you have not already done so by contacting the Committee Chair directly.

You were missed! Happy to have you back among your rotary family!

I want to thank each and every member of our club, but we don’t have enough room in this message to do it justice. We are a team and each of us puts in so much of our own time to see the results we all want, to serve and help others. Last, but not least, I want to thank my dear wife and best friend, Liz Wickstrom, for her support this year. Without you honey to lean on this year, I would not have been able to serve our club as much as I did. Thank you for being the best wife and friend a man could hope for. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES… I won’t soon forget what a great year it as been.

Happy Rotary Anniversary! May

The 4-way test of things we think, say or do… Is it the truth? • Is it fair to all concerned? • Will it build goodwill and friendships? • Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
