ThisprojectaimstotransformHartIsland-amass burrialsiteintheBronx-intoasafehaven,whereNew YorkCityresidentsandvisitorscanexperienceloss, remembrance,andhealingthroughspiritualandphysical connectionswithbothlandscapeandarchitecture.In additiontoengagingwithburials,thesiteisvulnerable tosea-levelrise.So,ourprojectreimaginesthepractice ofburialsonHartIsland,bothecologicallyandspiritually. Referencingtheancienttechniqueofburialmounds, wearerestructuring/elevatingtheexerciseofmass burialsontheislandwhileprolongingthetimethatthe islandtakestoreconcilebackintothewater.Througha spatialperformancebetweendelicatespaceframesand earth,thesemoundscontinuouslymorphtorespondto thechangeintime/burials,variationsofgrief,human/ non-humanloss,andtemporalityofmodelsofmarking life<>deathofthatloss.Andthus,wewanttoreinterpret Hartisland’snewidentityasapublicsanctuary.

ThisproposalisaninterventioninTeatroVerde,anopen amphitheaterbuiltin1954andlocatedinthehistorical siteofSanGiorgioMaggiore,inVenice-Italy.

TheCiniFoundation,whichownsthesite,wascreated in1951byVittorioCiniinhomagetohisdeceasedson, GiorgioCini.TheFoundationhasanembeddedarchival identity,oncesinceitscreation,theyarecommittedto archivingandpromotingarthistoryinVenice.Therefore, democratizingthearchivesbyembeddingthemintothe newinterventionisawaytohighlightthelegacyand missionofthefoundation.

TheDesigncreatesaninterplayofpresentandpast, performanceandspectaclethatareintendedtoenhance theexperienceoftheTeatroVerde.Bydressingand undressingpartsofthesite,thenewspacescreate suggestivepathsthatonecantake,andineach procession,onewillorganicallylearnaboutthehistory oftheaterandreflectonwhatishappeninginthe present.Thereforeunarchivingthepastistheprimary meanstohistoricizethepresent.

Thedesignaimstoprovidesanctuaryfor undocumentedfamiliesthroughtheexpansion ofthesite’sexistingcampinginfrastructure, referencingthehistoricalaxialqualityofFreedonia lane-whichoncewasthemainstreetintheguinea towncommunity.
