Ride into it like a Decade (you must be able to do these already), and as your front wheel reaches the top of the ramp pull up on thebars and do the decade, the same way as you would on the ground. Then put your left foot on the frame, by the seat post, the other on the pedal and simply ride out. ln case you're wondering why there's no number 4, THAT'S on page 9.

lHead Protecti on lf you ride and push your riding by learning and improving, lometime you're going to Grash. lt could be FACE FACTS:

out on a traik, on a jump. or halfpipe or quarter

pipe' Some crashes are simple, and you may only land on your hands or knees, which can be easily protected by gloves or pads. But some crashes are biggies, MAJOR slams' Take itre guy riding on the Halfords Team at the Poole UKBFA National in 1986. He overcooked an air, tensed up, rose to about ten feet out and dropped like a stone onto his head' But his only injuries were that he knocked the wind out of himself, traâ tré not been wearing a Bell Moto 3 his injuries could have been far, far worse. A simple concussion can lead to complications. Racing also has a history of crashes,

in which thà rider has been uninjured due to wearing a helmet. Crashes may not always be the riders fault however, bike components can fail too. One time in Holland' Carlo Griggs' fiigtrt crank spindle broke mid air. Needless to say, hé was suitaUly protected' So, risk takers need protection, and crashes can happen at any time. But don't be put off buying a helmet by saying. 'Man, €50 for a lrelmet! tto-wày, that's far too expensive", if you crash

the Skyway or Haro ramp teams and you'll see a Moto 4. Both the Bell and the JT come in a range of colours and sizes. Full face helmets offer the best protection, but may restrict your view. They weigh slightly more than open faces. Prices for this standard of helmet are in the t100 range, not cheap, but these are the best helmets. Other full face helmets come from Dyno and Gt, as well as AGV and Yes Racing. Full face lids are the best for ramps and BMX racing.

AGV OPEN FACE

More common than the Bell, AGV make a good qualitY helmet at a

reasonable price. Again, higher visibi-

lity but less face Protection. One thing to note here is the Kite Mark sticker, a British Standards award

which means that the helmet has passed tests for safety. Look for this on helmets.

Haro bikes have long since repre-

sented The Freestyle Bike. The Master was the first ever freestyle frame

by Bob Haro, who used two top tubes for a platform, an old Torker influence. And this was years before the sport of freestyle had any organisation, before split groups, before 2 Hip contests, before freestyle was in the magazines. Noq almost a decade later, freestyle has come a loooong way, but has Haro also advanced and made, designed

kept up with the times? Yes.

Basically, if you want a bike that represents freestyle in the late '80s, then get a Haro bike. lt's as simple as that. A Haro is designed from the

tyres (Haro multisurface, 20x1,75) up. Wheels? Your choice of either Araya 48 spoke rims laced into alloy high flange hubs, or a pair of proven Skyway Tuff 2's. Next up, the drop

outs. The rear platforms are unique;

the drop outs are bent at 90 degrees, strengthened, gnurled and little traction studs, similar to DX pedals, are welded on, making a very tunctional rear platform. Rear pegs will increase this standing area

for flatland, but the whole platform is out of the way if you're into ramps. The lorks are cromo, tapered

and feature flip up pegs halfway up. More of a fork platform than a fork peg. At the headtube a wrap around

gusset looks clean and functional, strong. On the Master, the top tubes are the famous two tube variety, yet the tubes bend closer together near the headtube. The Sport has a two into one top tube pioneered by Haro,

a single tube is met by the two extended seat stays about six inches

from the seat clamp. The stays taper

down to the rear drop out. On the

chain stays, bosses

for

brakes are on the upper side of the tubes. This means the cable goes through the seat tube, with an adjuster for dialling in. Cable guides on the down tube direct the cable to the Gyro, a prime spinning device. Just above the Gyro, a Haro stem, with cromo shaft clamps the bars; Haro

Haro Unidirectional chainwheel, KMC chain and Suntour freewheel come on both Master and Sport. Sitting down, a Viscount Dominator seat, with a virtually unbendable Haro fluted post, and Peregrine seat clamp keep things tight.

And that's it. Riding a Haro is cake. The Master performs on ground, with it's sharper steering

and quicker all round handling. The top tubes provide an excellent platform, though here paint may fade from shoe contact, a problem solved by grip tape application. The Sport is more of a ramp bike, it's a little slow on ground, but U.K. Haro rider David Frame seems to have no problem. The longer wheelbase best suits vert, and the result is a smooth and clean ramp bike. The forks have

a good rake to them, and the fork pegs fold down to give a perfect platform here. All round, the Haro willplease.

So, who can give proof

to the

Haro's capabilities? How about the Haro Freestyle Team: ln the U.S., Brian Blyther (Sport) is leading the 2 Hip Vert series at the moment, Ron

Wilkerson is organising contests and ripping on a Sport also, Rick Moliterno (Master) is winning AFA contests on both flat and overall, Joe Gruttola (Master) is one of the top am flatlanders in the AFA, Dennis McCoy (Master) and Joe Johnson (Sport) still ride Haros despite being unsponsored by Haro, Dave Nourie (Master) is a seriously under-rated Pro flatlander, and Matt Hoffman (Sport), well what more can be said? At Arizona (one week after being out of his cast), he opened his AFA run with a Step Thru at an honest 12 foot. Sick. In the U.K., Jason Davies (Master) is taking home the money in Masterclass, David Frame (Sport; is dominating his age group on both flat and ramp, and Steven

Geall (Spod)

is

winning ramps at

Nationals after only six months competing in freestyle.

So, there you have it, the Haro team packs a hefty punch. And all riding Haro bikes. lf proof is needed about the quality of Haro Bicycles, just look at the Haro Team.

JASON: Yeah. ln America there's quite a few routines that are just lame to watch because it's all rolling, where the oustanding people have some type of hopping tricks, some good rolling tricks, a load of connections and links, and they're fast and smooth, it's like total variation, instead of just rolling around. Like some people will roll a trick, ride back up, roll, back up, and just keep doing that. Moliterno, he rolls all the hardest combinations possible, links, he's fast and smpoth, he

does everything. At the moment it's iust do as many rolling tricks hard, but it's affecting people's actual routines that they put together. But it will change round to a bit of everything.

MARK: Do you get nervous?

JASON: Sort of. I do, but then I'm not. I think "Man I gotta ride good", but then I think "l can pull it all off" and just go out and do it. Sometimes you can panic a trick, and you keep doing it faster and faster, and screwing it up, because you're rushing.

tons of original stuff. Scott MacDonald. Who else is there? MARK: Gary Neale?

JASON: He's good, but I don't dig him. Allyn Withington is cool. MARK: What about on ramps?

JASON: Greg (Guillotte),

(Jason)

Ellis, that's about it.

MARK: Who would be tough to ride

against if there were no age groups? JASON: For overall, Carlo and Can-

ning. So nent year when l'm going Pro; there's Canning, and Carlo will stay in Master. Anybody else? Not so much on overall, which I rate more, but individually, on flatland; there's tons of good people, like Fergus (Heron), Oliver Matthews in practise.

ilARK: Why do you rate getting the overall more than getting an individual group?

JASON: Because it's harder. You're a better rider if you can ride ramps to a certain standard and flat to a certain standard, instead of just flat or ramps. Like, if I had to ride one of the two I'd just ride ramps. Flatland's cool but you can get into a state of just doing the same tricks, but ramps is just a doss. MARK: Do you rate contests? JASON: Yeah, they're cool. They're fun. MARK: What about demos and tours and stuff?

JASON: Demos are rad, but getting

to them takes forever. Comps are

O.K. lor getting to, but you like want to get back as soon as you can, because you're miles away. IIARK: Had any bad slams?

JASON: I've bruised my kidney a couple of times, but that's mainly from mucking about. I've never broken a bone or anything. Scott Freeman's road is lethal. lt's real gravely I've got millions of scars on my legs and hands.

MARK: What about America, con-

tests and stuff, are they any good? JASOil: Yep. You get way nervous,

because everyone around you is like, god, because they're American, and their standard is so much higher. lt's not that bad, because if you go over there, and just do a good variety of tricks, and don't touch, and you're not sketchy, you place real good. You don't have to do all the new tricks, you can have a bit of old, whatever. You just ride to your potential.

Just another ScooteJt

Nlnl Screamer Text: Kris Photos: Mark t{oble

With GT-ish bars, ACS Rotor, ACS 55 Stem, ATB adjustable levers and

Hey, this is a test. No stories about going off to school on your new wonderful scoot and all yo' mates having a fun time on it, then after school impressing the best piece of toast with endos so she goes to the end of year party with you, no. So, we tested the Ninja Screamer and this is what we thought of it. Well, the scoot was collected from Ninja

for the competish. The scooter we

co-ordinated colours the front end

along with the other five boxed ones had to test was already fully built up

รง

once. Perhaps it would have been better if it had come in a box because seeing it all in one go, fully glowing in it's clashing colours was sickening. Well, at least you'd get noticed riding the thing. After recovering from the initial shock and my eyes adjusting to the dayglo pink/green paint job, it became apparent that the Ninja people had

done their homework on the Screamer. Working up . . . the tyres are the

famous 'snakebelly' type patterns and can take a lot of pressure. 55 psi in a scooter tyre is a massive advantage when it comes to riding the thing. The wheels are normal 12 % inch jobs. The frame is a lot like the Pacer in that it had two tubes and square cross pieces, but it is slightly different. Different in the fact that this baby is TIG wetded, which means that the joins are MUCH stronger and inevitably will last longer. Other brands of scooter use a CO2 method which is cheaper in every sense of the word. The des-

t, i

i

igner, Anthony Brereton, wanted the frame to be engineered, not chucked

ri

together by a robot. Mmmm. The platform is the besi t've seen on a stock scooter, a lot wider than normal ones. The brakes aren't anything special, but are drilled and colour co-ordinated. The graphics all over are HOT. An ACS Rotor is the chosen detangter, but we have found that they don't work very well. An ACS 55 Slanted stem holds the GT type bars in place. Longer freestyle type levers operate the brakes while your hands hold Mushroom copy grips. Oh, I forgot the screw in

I I

I

footstands front and rear.

ffi#

@## r#&*

One thing you'll find in the box but won't bolt onto the scoot is the guarantee. lt lasts a whole year and covers the frame and components, and you won't find it on any other scooter today. THAT'S how good the Screamer is.

After Mark had taken a few shots of the unused scooter we set about thrashing it. The HP tyres result in FAST scooting with no wash-out or spongyness. The screw in pegs result in hurt ankles so removal took place. The head angle is just right for airs, plants, and flatland tricks, not too snappy and not too slow. Everyone easily adapted to it, and I loved it. With all the extra components it was a touch heavy after riding my Variflex without front brakes n' Rotor, but it's no worry. The front fork standers (when put back in) are just fine for ground moves, but I prefer axle extenders on the back for easier backyards etc. The Rotor didn't work too hot especially when the bars are reversed, so the grip on the tyres came in handy for shuffling Backyards. lf

apply different grips (A'mes, Jive Handles etc) or perhaps some donuts. The wide plafform is such a good idea, providing easy replacement of feet after no footer jumps and boosty type stuff. lt could do with reinforcing on the kicktail as an

awkward landing by fat Mark cracked it a bit, but it's nothing to

worry over.

This is not just another scooter, it's the one I recommend as a stock machine for this price range. With a little dialling in this is a really nice piece of chocolate; so go to your nearest store now and ask for one, and if they don't have one reward the nice shop assistant with a good sound slap. Or, enter the comp in this ish, or send for one. Don't thank me for recommending this great scoot to you, just send me money. ha.

Kris remembers the one year guarantee and simply executes a ramp to ramp Manual Boll.

I WAS IN WESTON was for the first BFA National of 1988, when during breaks in the contest people were outside the sports hall riding round the track, jumping and going back to their roots. The track was a little primitive then, with ruts and bricks all over the place. This time round the track was in prime condition for the BB National. A very technical track, spiralling round in a big clockwise THE I-AST TIME

CONTEST ROUND UP Central And Wales Regional. Saturday 4th June. Rhydycar Sport Centre, Merthyr Tydfil.

ln the 16's, David Castledine and Brian Willis were equal 2nd. David with 5ft airs and various lip tricks

including a Backside Boneless, Brian however crashed doing a one footer, his front wheel boned off the side of the ramp and would certainly have won this section but for that mistake. His 7ft airs, No Handers and one

Over 40 riders took part and with plenty of local support this must have been one of the noisiest regionals for a long time. Under 13's produced only one

rider, that being Simon pearson who for his age pulled some

excellent ground

tricks, Squeakersons and Funky Chickens being his best. 13 Plus saw Rick Coombes

to

trying

dislodge Mark Atkins and

although Mark prefers

more competition it did not prevent him

from coming out on top

once

agarn.

14 Plus; Simon Bennet, Anthony Daley and Gareth Swan battled out the places here, and Simon Bennett with startling resemblance to Gary Neale pulled off his first win of the season. ln the 15 Plus section tan Coy with Forward Elbow Glides and Frontside Decades (ame third. Sebastian Lester with Hyperspastic Locomotives, Backwards Rubber

Rides and other tricks came a little undermarked was

second,

the general opinion. In first place

came Karl Denton with the

smooth ride and performance on a new bike and new sponsor. ln the 16 Plus several new names to the fore, Tonv Brewer and Andrew Lawrence in joint 3rd place, 2nd place went to David Castledine, not at his best, and

Liam Ward with some

Freak Squaks, Hang 5's and Marble Bags

came in first by 2 points.

17 Plus saw John yull with a host of original tricks, Frontside Unboomerangs, Roparonies and Whiplashes takes first place from Jason Hewitt. Jason came second and should be eligible for nationals, and if he keeps his mind on his riding and not waving to the crowd will surprise somé of the more well known riders very shortly.

Masterclass gave us 2

footers were very good. However take nothing away from the winner Glynn Green who rode smoothly to beat the two second place riders by one point. 17 Plus went to Chilly (David) Childs from Kettering. His 7ft airs (one foot), 5ft canyons, high Turn Downs and Ruff Hops were too good for the rest of the class. Phil Bevan body armour and all, - and was third Jason Hewitt pulling into second place to give him thè

overall Nol spot.

Masterclass

ramps saw Gary Neale give a fine performance with 3ft airs and Fakies about 1ft out. The Overall trophies went to: Mark Atkins, 13 Plus. Anthony Daley, 14 Plus. Karl Denton, 15 Plus. David Castledine, 16 plus. Jason Hewitt, 17 Plus. Gary Neale, Masterclass.

Text: Brian Castledine.

1/,

minutes of .Gary Neale's routine. Some say he's the tops, others disagree, bul he's always there giving-his best

even when there are no other Masterclass riders, are they afraid of something? Ramps . . . No Under 13 riders, and only Mark Atkins in the 13 Plus section, this

must be difficult to motivate

oneself when you know there are no other competitors. However, Mark made full use of the ramp

area, although the ramps were not as good as normal for

canyoning

etc. to give

a

comprehensive account of Step Thrus, Canyons, 5ft airs with plenty of style. 14 Plus saw a much improved Anthony Daley with good air and ramp work take first place 5 points ahead of Gareth Swan whosè local support couldn't improve his score.

Simon Bennett and

Simon

Rathbone were joint third. ln the 15 Plus all eyes were on

Karl Denton who together with his supporters gave the crowd a thrilling couple of minutes with 7ft airs, Lookbacks, 1 Footers and a very smooth 540 all too good for the others in his group. Ashley Wheatley was 2nà ana Daviâ Covedge third.

Simon Pearcon took Funky Chickens and suchlike to a good first on Under 13 Flat.

sponsorship able to carry it into the next level of competence, When this happens, then the newcomers to the sport must increase in numbers rapidly, and the clubs, tracks, and national body must be ready to develop the ground level input to the sporl, By this means, and I would guess only this means, will the sport develop to the level of a recognised sport to the general public. Freestyle magazine can onl;,do so much, it only reaches a tiny proportion of the youth of the country as yet, and the media (especially TV) see the sport as a kiddies pastime (and that goes for Freestyle BMX as

well!). Whenever

I am with the

media

people (who have this vision of BYX as little children on little bikes) I take great delight in presenting them with whole families who ride (and some freestylers are married men as well). Shock, horror crosses their faces as they realise (too late to help us) that they have ludged it wrong.

I

You will notice that have sneaked Freestyle back into racing discussionsl Well,

I

have done so deliberately, because in the public mind (small though it is, and with a very limited vision) they are the same thing. So, why not bring all three together under one umbrella in a way that does not remove the indivrduality of any of them as a first move? We could plan calendars together to avoid clashes. We could look at sponscrships together. We might even work together to

consolidate

on what now exrsts,

and

develop for the future. ls that too difficult a vision for all to see what could be downstream for us all?

I

pose the question

to

everyone who

sincerely believes in the development of the

sport (as

I know the other

organisations

already do), and ask, why not? PETER JW NOBLE Chairman, UKBFA
