ROB ALTON is a relatively new guy on the scene, in terms of contest success; only recently has he won a major title, 17 Plus World Flatland Champion. A short character analysis would reveal an intense rider striving to be faster and smoother, an apprentice green keeper, a jujitsu fighter, a manic driver, and to finish with an age old cliche, an all round good egg. We had to talk to this guy, but this is no normal interview; rain put off any hope off riding that evening, LoZ needed a lift to a party, Rob had his car, so . . . MARK: Right, this is Rob Alton's inter-
view, and we're doing it en route to LoZ's party, as we're giving him a lift. ROB: You're doing the interview now? LOZ: I hate this stereo. turn it down a bit.
MARK: Anyway, what do you think of this concept of giving LoZ a lift to this parly?
ROB: I think it's dead funny, because I don't know where the hell I'm going. LOZ: How long have you been riding? ROB: About sax years, well, that's
all I can say really because I'm trying to concentrate on my driving. MARK:We go left here . . . anyway, so how long have you been driving for?
ROB: I passed my test on February ninth. Wellsmart. MARK: You've been riding for six years? ROB: About six years. Started competitions in 1986, the lirst National
series. MARK: You haven't done very well in Nationals though?
ROB: No, ldon't want to talk about that. liust blew out. I had an attitude

don't take competitions so seriously now. MARK: What do you mean? ROB: I don't get all worked up, and if I lose or don't really ride very well I don't get all worked up about it now. Like belore if I didn't practice well or anything I'd get really annoyed; I just go there and have a good time now. MARK: Do you find you ride better when you're relaxed or when you're hyper?
ROB: When l'm relaxed,

worry about it now. MARK: So it's very much a relaxing thing to ride? ROB: Yeah, you can't help a bit of adrenalin and that sort of thing before you do your run. MARK:We take the right exit out here . . . so what do you think of this Peugeot Estate then? ROB: I think it sucks because it's been in front of me and I can't overtake it. I might hit it. MARK: Yeah, we almost got in the boot then.

and progress, is it the contest win or just learning new tricks? ROB: Just learning new stuff and riding a lot, it's just good fun. l'd still ride if there weren't any comps. MARK: Do you feel contests are important?
ROB: Oh yeah, they are important,
they're a good chance to get together and ride with people. With contests you've got something to work for, like doing well, and practice more and get routines dialled, that kind of stuff. I'm going to have to turn my windscreen wipers on hyperspastic now. MARK: Hyperspastic mode for the windscreen wipers there. We have to go straight on here, take the last exit out. Here comes the roundabout, we're just passing the roundabout. Wellsmart. ROB: That was third gear there.

blown away. Out there flatland is so far ahead.
MARK: ls that overall standard or just a few of them?
ROB: I reckon it's overall standard. There are obviously riders out there
who aren't that good. MARK: Right at the lights. ROB: When we went to San Morano there were PeoPle like StePhan Schulz doing rolling Stubble Ducks and Dump Trucks to Frontside De' cades, and this was last October.

Not mony skoters there ot this time, they were still oll shocked up in vorious B&B houses. By the woy, my B&B cost gl50 for two people fortwo nights. The holfpipe looked pretty good, o ply surfoce on top of o steelfrome, ond with onother section on the bock of one side with o spine. As for street obstocles, the locols hod constructed o huge curved woll, o bit like two quorterpipes moking o corner with o curved veriicol joining piece, You could orc o woll ride from one quorterto the other, it olso hod coping on top of whot wos obout Aft of vert. lt wos ten feet toll in oll. Other stuff in this oreo were other quorterpipes set bock to bock with spines, ond not o greot deol resembling ony street I know of. Skoters who revel in o contest with simuloted street obstocles looked of the set-up in voin; but the romp skoters hod o better chonce of doing well here with oll these lorge tronsitions obout, No roilslide bor for exomple, Street ond Romp quolifiers were being held on this first doy. Street entronts hod one run eoch, in order to cut to 25 for the finol. ln romp everyone hod two runs, counting the best run only, 20 romp finolists would skote on the next doy. Crowds? Well, for Soturdoy it didn't look too good, ond most of the Euro skote contest

Does this sound familiar? Over 5ft 8 tall, and starting to find expert sized frames too small. Racing at most meets, and doing pretty good, but could improve and make more mains. Likes quality built cromoly framesets engineered to race. Likes a strong bike that will not only race well, butwilltake typical jump/street/thrash abuse. Wants a class bike. lf that roughly describes where you're at then take a good long look at the Zeronine Pro XL. lt's just over an inch longer than the Expert frame we tested April '88, and is well proved in getting the right people to the winner's circle. Quick out the gate, smooth over the speed jumps, not squirrely over doubles or triples, a good carve to be enjoyed in the turns. lf you want further proof of the Zeronine's capabilities then watch the team at EBA events this season. They'll be winning, but will you?

This month we're featuring iust one trick, and a pretty hard one at that too; the Reverse Trolley. Like the name says, it's a Trolley, but done backwards, and it takes quite a while to get completely down. For a start your going to need decent rear pegs, but that's fairly obvious anyway. The first bit is ultra snappy, and involves getting the bike from horizontalto vertical, with the intention of ending up straddling the head tube. This is done like a Perverted Decade (peg to peg), but stall it at the top. By the way, your bars need to start off backwards as in picture 1. By picture 2 you're already in the vert position, and the half-Decade motion will turn you round a bit. Hop about a wee tad, and when the balance point is A O.K., then you can start squeaking or scufling with a foot. Let go of the bars whilst squeaking, and use those arms for balance. Squeak lor as long as poss. At the end you grab the bars and use the back brake to stop, hop about a bit (if necessary) to gain balance, and then reverse the procedure of getting into the trick, you'll find that the exit part is slower than the entry part. Ride off. When you've got this down, try going faster. That way you can rollthe Trolley with both feet on the pegs. Then you're leaving lntermediates behind and breaking into the Advanced category.

heavy competition, attentron to detail and aggressive marketino rave remained amongst the top threg .orpanies involved with BMX And from time to time, all would agree that GT have occupied the No.1 spot A Little History; Gary Turner has been perso,rally making GT bikes ever since the ccnception of GT BMX. At the very sta( cl BMX, back in the late 60's, Gary sta(ed making stronger frames for krcs rn the neighbourhood, who used to race bikes on the local motorcross track. Then, when BMX became a sport and
started officjal racing, Gary was

there with the first frames. a cng with Schwinn, GJS, Webco and a few more. Through the 70's BMX in the U.S was picking up pace at an astonis.rng rate;
THE bike to have was a Bt"4X bike. Other companies started uo and flourished, yet GT was stitt maxrng big footprints in a fast growing spo(. Come
early eighties, some riders started doing tricks on these bikes and began branching off into a division, called f reestyle. GT saw a need for a specially designed frame to cope with this new demand, but they were not the first, Haro beat them to the post by launching their Haro Freestyler, with a design inspired by Torker. The GT was quite different; it did not have Haro's double
top tubes or a head tube gusset. lnstead, the GT Performer had a frame platform and a curved downtube. Through the eighties both Haro and GT have unveiled new frame designs each year in order to keep ahead of the Joneses. Platforms, geometry, tubing, chainring guards, stickers and other subtle changes have been made over the years. So in particular, what have GT come up with now? The Bike; Enter the GT Pro Tour Performer F/S complete bike. Second in GT's freestyle range to the
Pro Team model, but nevertheless a blinder of a bike. Cromo frame and forks, top quality components, geometry and looks to match. A closer look is what's needed. The Frame; The GT Pro Performer frame looks like no other. For a start, the down tube is

s-shaped to create extra space where required, at the head tube for feet on the front wheel, and at the BB to add a bit of a platform there. There's the platform at the seat clamp, which has remained pretty much unchanged over the years, and has just been flattened
out with the top made flush. Lugs for centre pull brakes are under the chain stays, with cable routing going through the down tube. There are no platforms at the rear drop-outs at all. GT feel that it's up to you whether you want platforms there or not; a bolt on set comes complete with this bike. Seat stays are curved at the drop-outs. The Forks;
Cromoly, leading axle, and no bolt in fork pegs. Again, the GT policy of 'bolt
on is better' applies here too. Bolt on GT fold up fork pegs come with the bike, and means you have ultimate choice of personal positioning. The Bars and Stem; GT bars have remained unchanged for years. Lowered crossbar and cromo is all you need to say. But, they're fairly wide at the stem area. The stem is the new GT freestyle stem, replacing the
old bulky one; it's narrower
and sleeker, with the allen bolts underneath. A little plastic cap covers the main stem bolt. 39

Strength wise, GTs have large d ameter tubing all round, strong platf orm and larger chain stays than most,
and wrth the whole frame made from cromo
rt will last. This larger tubing also reTlects in the bike's weight. it's a bit heav er than some others.
F oe it. and immediately you ll find a neutraL bike, a little on the short side if anyth ng. GT have stayed with the concept of making one frame for all, unlike Haro who have two sizes of frame, the Sport and the shorter Master. The head angle is neutral to slow; if you are used to something with sharp steering like a Hutch Trickstar then it will take a little 'linre to get used to. The cranks are in a comfortable position. nothing freaksh there. For flat it's very controllable,

everything else is equally fine too.
It should be pointed out that top bike manufacturers, such as GT, knowwhat they re doing when it comes to designing a frame. No company is going to
release a frame that won't ride well. lnevitably, all makes of frames will be drff
erent f rom each other. with different

The Drive Train,
One piece GT cranks here, named Power Series Cranks. GT also make excellent three piecers too, and they come on the top of the range Pro Tour Team Model. The OPC do the job and
stay straight. A GT compact disc (43 tooth). Shimano DX copies for pedals, which grip just great, but aren't quite as classy as the real thing. GT chain. GT sealed bottom bracket. The Wheels; Chrome aluminium 36 hole rims, racelaced (that's with allthe spokes coming from the outside of the hub flange) into
GT Superlace hubs. These hubs are sealed and spin forever, but why 36 spokes and not the popular and strong
48's? Shawn Buckley at GT told me why last October, "GT wheels are just as strong as 48's, and they're lighter 40

And that's no biased opinion either, GT Superlace wheels are excellent GT multisurface tyres, 20x1 .75. and good
overall performance. They do well on ramps, flat, tarmac and also grip well on dirt in case you're into jumping now and then. The Brakes; Odyssey levers operate a Dia Compe Nippon caliper on the front and a Dia Compe 4D990 on the back. A Gyro is

There may be other people in the same age group butthere's nobody in the same league as Mark Atkins in 14's ramps. Big nine foot airs, Manuals, big Disasters, Tailspin, and nice variations all packed into two minutes raked in Mark one of the highest ramp scores of the day. Sean Clarke beat Mark on ground with some ripping tricks. Elder brother Lee Clarke also took first, in 15's. Backwards Rubber-rides are hard enough, but when you do them with the bike

Here's a couple of faces you haven't seen for a while; Larry Bull, and Mason Smith. They were up against Jason Davies and Gary Neale in the four man Pro Flat section. Larry's been splitting his time between college and riding alone at home. And it shows;
rolling backwards they're darn near impossible: Lee does them that way. Simon Tabron over-rotated afew high 540's in practice, which must have put adamper on things for his run. He got second behind David Frame who pulled off his usual high stuff, Abubacas and the like.

Philwon today, with Rob in second. Maybe only having two hours sleep the night before doesn't help, eh Rob? Jamie Bestwick (Lookbacks, nine foot) and Brian Wills (No Hand to one footer, Nothing air) fought it out for the 17's ramps, this time Jamie won. Masterclass is a tough group to say the least. All last year's best Amateurs are riding Master this year. On ground it was Fergus Heron's day; he pulled off EVERYTHING. A perfect routine of Dump Trucks to frontside Decades, Backwards Whiplashes, switchfooted Elbow Glide to Side Glide to Steam Roller to Catapult, Chicken Whips (Funky Chicken Pinky Squeaks), Candy Man, hyperspastic Locomotives plus more could only be worth a first place and the highest score of the day. David Blundell may not be a famous name with a good record, so that's maybe why he only got third. He made hard tricks look easy and had masses of variation, with minimal mistakes. Reputation Karl Denton walked off his bike a couple of times, but somehow managed a second. Jason Webb wasn't perfect but rode fast and hard; include
Stephen Geall, Superchicken above banners. He deserved a higher place. National. One ramp was brand new, but unfinished and un-ridden, so therefore it hadn't been adjusted properly for verl. smoothness etc. lt was bumpy and very under-vert. The other ramp was the Bury club
ramp, was also bumpy, and had angle-iron as'coping'. Puncture City; Neville Potts had
six punctures, Howard Radcliffe had
