The sale again features a wide variety of wares and categories within the field, all reflecting the Swedish collectors keen interest in the subject through time and spanning China’s rich 4000-year old history of remarkable craftsmanship. Standing pratyalidhasana, holding a vajra in his right hand raised, fierce attitude, angry face with bulging eyes, a third eye on the forehead, open mouth showing fangs, eyebrows and bushy beards, the hair erect behind a crown five pointed heads with skulls, a plump body covered with jewels inlaid with turquoise and a snake as a necklace, the hips dressed in a tiger skin whose head is visible on its right flank and held by a belt of heads. The central knob rising from an ornate quatrefoil within a square enclosing twelve small nipples alternating with twelve characters representing the Twelve Branches, the main field with somewhat abbreviated TLV patterns as well as eight nipples. 452. A bronze circular mirror with animas and inscription, Sui/early Tang dynasty (6th –7th Century). The thick mirror finely cast in high relief with four lively animals racing around the knob within a sawtooth border below the circular ridge that separates the main field from an inscription set below a sawtooth band in the deep sides of the outer rim. 454. Two bronze mirrors, Ming dynasty or older. The larger one with an inskription that translates as ....? The smaller one depicting Lao Zi with servant, crane and turtle. Diameter 7,5 cm. 455. A bronze figure of Buddha, Thailand, 17th Century or older. Cast, seated in sattvasana on a lotus base placed on a plain pedestal, his right hand in bhumisparshamudra, his left resting on his lap, wearing a samghati, his face with serene expression, his hair worked in tight curls rising to the ushnisha surmounted by a flame. Traces of gilt and paint in the face. Height 45 cm. Provenance: The Collection of Axel and Nora Lundgren. Axel and Nora Lundgren made several important bequests to Swedish Museums. They left important works of art to Moderna Museet, Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities and an extensive collection of Chinese porcelain and Works of Art to the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm as well as founded Axel & Nora Lundgrens Art Foundation. Axel R Lundgren (18?-1939) was a co-founder of the ‘Kinaklubben’ in the early 1900 in Sweden. He had a significant collection of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, he did exhibit 44 pieces at the Nationalmusum exhibition in 1928. His advisors were Orvar Karlbeck and Hans Öström. Bo Gyllenswärd writes about his fantastic collection in the catalogue from the Exhibition at the time of the significant bequest. Mr Lundgren married Eleonora (Nora) Augusta Nydqivst (b 1891-?)in 1917 who kept the collection intact until it was donated to Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities.

Bukowskis December 2017 461. A pair of faux bois bowls, Qing dynasty, Qianlong (1736–95). The shallow rounded sides resting on a short tapered foot rising to an everted rim, painted on the exterior with swirls of chest and ochre browns in imitation of wood, the interior painted gold. Diameter 12 cm. Provenance: The Collection of Axel and Nora Lundgren. Literature: R.L. Hobson, The Eumorfopoulos Collection, vol. 5, London, 1927, pl. LXXI, no. A slightly larger example of slightly shallower form. A Qianlong bowl of this form and decoration is illustrated in Ming Qing ciqi jianding, Hong Kong, 1993, pl. 149, where it is noted that these bowls were made in imitation of wooden bowls used by Tibetan lamas which were often lined in silver or silver-gilt. Compare three related bowls sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong rooms, 5th October 2011, lot 2005, 9th October 2007, lot 1530, and 31st October 2004, lot 224.

470. A gilt copper alloy figure of Akshobhya, Tibet, 16th Century. Seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base with a vajra before him, his right hand lowered in bhumisparshamudraand his left hand in varadamudra, wearing a flowing sanghati with the borders incised on the outside and stippled on the inside, his face with heavy-lidded eyes and a benevolent expression flanked by long pendulous lobes, richly gilt overall. Heigth 17,5 cm. Provenance: From the Collection of Carl Leijonhuvud (1885-1961), married to Anna Sofia Clara Helena Elisabeth Wrede af Eliminää (1896-1987) in 1919. Carl had a diplomatic career and came out to China in the early 1920’s as a member of the Swedish Diplomatic corps. Chargé d’affair in Peking from 1924. He returned to Europe in 1930 when he was posted in London. The pieces were acquired during the period he was posted out in Peking.

The four-armed deity seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base surrounded by waves, the main hands in anjalimudra, the others holding a lotus flower, wearing an elegant dhoti incised with scrolling borders and beaded jewellery, the face with a serene expression and head crowned with an elaborate tiara surrounding the hair swept in a topknot, the base sealed and incised with a double vajra. 474. A large Nepalese gilt bronze buddha on a throne with mandorla, 18/19th Century. The buddha is shown seated in a meditative pose, eyes cast down on a high double lotus throne. The figure is centered on a large raised throne flanked by two buddhist lions. To the center a carved image of Ganesha. The mandorla is three dimensionall and has traces of beeing gilded as well. Bukowskis December 2017 477. A copper alloy temple lamp, Nepal, circa 1900. The upper section is portraying the sun god Surya pulled by his seven horses and with his two consorts, Saranyu and Chbaya within a mandorla. This on top of a tall cylindrical and ribbed central column standing on a large round tray. Height 97 cm. Provenance: The Bengt and Lilavati Häger Collection of Indian Collection of Indian, Southeast Asian, Chinese and Japanese Art. The Bengt and Lilavati Häger Collection of Indian Collection of Indian, Southeast Asian, Chinese and Japanese Art. . Lilavati and Professor Bengt Häger’s art collection was culturally significant and vast. It is clear that it was founded on the couples cross cultural experiences. Lilavati was a leading exponent of Indian dance and Bengt one of the most important European Impresarios of his day. Multitalented and highly regarded Bengt Häger (1916-2011) worked inexhaustibly throughout his life to promote dance as an independent art form and field of research. He founded and managed the Swedish Dance Museum, the University Collage of Dance and Circus in Stockholm. He worked actively to bring international guest performances from world leading dance companies. During the years 1946–59 he lived in India and Nepal and acquired many pieces for National Museum in Denmark, The Royal Library, the Moesgård Museum and himself. He set up a scientific center in Kathmandu, Nepal and later in Denmark where he organized all the material and information he had gathered. In 1940–45 he was employed by the Danish National Museum, in 1961 he became Museum Director for the Ethnografic Collection. 1963–78 he was the head of the information and educational Department at the Museum. Each elephant is modelled standing foursquared with its head turned to one side, the hide naturalistically coloured and painted. Each wears colourful and gilt trappings, the saddlecloth is decorated with lotussscroll and the Chinese character for good fortune, and each saddle bears a yellow ground flanged vase decorated with flowers. Height with wooden stand 38 cm. Provenance: From the Collection of James Keiller. James Keiller (1867–1962), a Swedish Businessman. Studied at Chalmers tekniska institute and Polytechnikum in Zurich. Italian envoyé from 1910 and Cabinet Chamberlain at the Royal Court from 1922. His interest were stirred early on, and only enhanced by the masses of porcelain that he and his brother in law brought up 1905–07 from the sunken Eastindiaman Gothenburg. His wife Alice accompanied him regularly on trips to buy Chinese porcelain and antiques. His collection comprised more than 2500 pieces. In 1910, he and Alice traveled to China to acquire more pieces. His adventures are documented in a handwritten journal by Alice. The elephants are mentioned in an article as bought by the Couple in Paris in 1908. Exhibitions: A similar pair of elephants dated to the 18th–19th century, also bearing flanged gu vases, was sold at Christie’s New York, 21–22 March 2013, lot 1563. Also a smililar pair of elephants dated to the Qianlong period was sold at Chrisites, May 9th 2017, lot 95.

A pair of slightly smaller caparisoned elephants belonging to the Edward T. Chow Collection, bearing unflanged gu vases dating to the 19th century, were sold in Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 19 May 1981, lot 598. Literature: An article of his home in Svenska Hem i ord och bild, 1921, depicts some of his collection. See page 89–101. The elephants depicted on page 93. Compare with an elephant in the Palace Museum, Beijing, attributed to the Qianlong period, decorated in the same palette save for the saddle is illustrated in Yinliuzhai shuoci yizhu (Commentary on Porcelain from the Studio of Drinking Streams), Beijing, 2005, p. 450, fig. 9–43. A pair of closely related elephants can be found in the Copeland Collection, in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, is illustrated in W. Sargent, The Copeland Collection – Chinese and Japanese Ceramic Figures, Milan, 1991, pp. 196–97, no. 94. David Howard & John Ayers; Compare a another pair in China for the West, page 610. Other: The imagery of an elephant carrying a vase represents the rebus taiping youxiang, which may be translated as ’may there be a peaceful reign’. This auspicious theme can be seen not only in porcelain like the present lot, but also in other media such as cloisonné enamels, metalwork, jades, and paintings.

Of rectangualar shape, square section with four sides and canted corners, supported on a high flared foot, and surmounted by a waisted neck of the same section, brilliantly decorated in bright cloisonné enamels on a turquoise-ground, the four sides alternating design with phoenix birds and five clawed dragon in pursuit of a ’flaming pearl’ amid swirling multi-coloured clouds and above foaming waves crashing against rockwork. The corners decorated with stylised lotus blooms, archaistic scrollwork and bats, the foot with archaistic scrolls enclosing lotus blooms, and the neck decorated similarly with archaistic scrolls and bats. Height 40 cm. Exhibitions: Compare a similar vase sold at Sothebys, Hong Kong, October 9th 2007. Lot no 1324. This single one was decorated only with dragons. Literature: These vases is likely to be inspired by a Ming cloisonné enamel vase of the same square form but decorated with the phoenix design, from the Qing Court collection and now in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Enamel ware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1971, pl. 14.

Provenance: From the Collection of Paul Butler (1892-1981), Chicago Illinois, thence by descent. Paul Butlers family fortune came from papermaking, that dated back to the colonial era. He was an accomplished horseman, poloplayer and photographer, and served during WW1 with the American expeditionary forces as a cavalry officer and reconnaissance photographer. After the war he returned to the family business and served as President of Butler Paper Company, from 1930 to 1965, but soon noticed a business opportunity in private aircrafts. The business expanded after WW2, and soon Butler Aviation opened facilities In Chicago, La Guarida, Palm Beach etc.

These chairs were aquired from Paul R Wedendal as Ming dynasty in the early 1980's. There were originally 4 chairs. Two from the set was sold at auction in Hong Kong.

Provenance: From the Estate of a Swedish Noble Family. Lingzhi or ‘divine fungus’ is amongst the most revered and interesting plants in China. Also called ‘Auspicious Plant’ or ‘Immorality Plant’, lingzhi is believed to be a magical substance and Daoist alchemists claimed that by taking lingzhi man could attain immortality and even a dead person could come to life again. Lingzhi has been a popular motif in Chinese art for two thousand years. Many imperial porcelains of the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties are painted with the lingzhi design, often in a stylised or simplified form. It is extremely rare, however, to find porcelain lingzhi modelled in its naturalistic form like the present pieces. Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, a regal figure with a gold turban is seated on a raised dais facing musicians and a dancer, set on a terrace overlooking a moonlit lake, numbered 68 in the horizon, cropped with added red margins, the reverse with an ownership inscription in an early hand and the outline in red of a preparatory drawing, mounted, framed and glazed. Measurement painting 25.8 x 32.8 cm. Provenance: The Bengt and Lilavati Häger Collection of Indian Collection of Indian, Southeast Asian, Chinese and Japanese Art. Lilavati and Professor Bengt Häger’s art collection was culturally significant and vast. It is clear that it was founded on the couples cross cultural experiences. Lilavati was a leading exponent of Indian dance and Bengt one of the most important European Impresarios of his day. Multitalented and highly regarded Bengt Häger (1916-2011) worked inexhaustibly throughout his life to promote dance as an independent art form and field of research. 659. A pair of famille rose caparisoned elephants, Qing dynasty, Jiaqing (1796–1822). Each elephant is modelled standing foursquared with its head turned to one side, the hide naturalistically coloured and painted. Each wears colourful and gilt trappings, the saddlecloth is decorated with lotussscroll and the Chinese character for good fortune, and each saddle bears a yellow ground flanged vase decorated with flowers. Height with wooden stand 38 cm. Provenance: From the Collection of James Keiller. James Keiller (1867–1962), a Swedish Businessman. Studied at Chalmers tekniska institute and Polytechnikum in Zurich. Italian envoyé from 1910 and Cabinet Chamberlain at the Royal Court from 1922. His interest were stirred early on, and only enhanced by the masses of porcelain that he and his brother in law brought up 1905–07 from the sunken Eastindiaman Gothenburg. His wife Alice accompanied him regularly on trips to buy Chinese porcelain and antiques. His collection comprised more than 2500 pieces. In 1910, he and Alice traveled to China to acquire more pieces. His adventures are documented in a handwritten journal by Alice. The elephants are mentioned in an article as bought by the Couple in Paris in 1908. Exhibitions: A similar pair of elephants dated to the 18th–19th century, also bearing flanged gu vases, was sold at Christie’s New York, 21–22 March 2013, lot 1563. Also a smililar pair of elephants dated to the Qianlong period was sold at Chrisites, May 9th 2017, lot 95. A pair of slightly smaller caparisoned elephants belonging to the Edward T. Chow Collection, bearing unflanged gu vases dating to the 19th century, were sold in Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 19 May 1981, lot 598. Related content: Chinese wall paper were first ‘discovered’ by the French Jesuits and introduced to Europe by the East India Companies. The fashion for them reached its peak in the latter half of the 18th Century and persisted long in to the 19th Century. Chinies wallpapers were used to decorated window frames, overdoors, panelling, cabinets, foldingscreens, fire screens, chimney boords and complete rooms. Bukowskis December 2017 688. A set of three famille rose covers, Qing dynasty with Qianlong mark. Decorated with mythical beasts in a continous lotus scroll. Diameter 9,5 cm. Provenance: From the Collection of Wilhelm Montelius (1852-1918), thence by descent. The Montelius family had a long family tradition of being lawyers, Wilhelm however became the Director of Swedish Telephone company Ericsson from 1901–1916, and his brother Oscar Montelius (1843–1921) became archaeologist and member of the Swedish National Heritage Board. Wilhelms passion for collecting oriental ceramics and works of art was aided by Ericssons business in China at the time. Before World War One he managed to send out his staff to acquire several important pieces.

In the auction room Once registred for a paddle you are welcome to bid in the salesroom. The auctioneer will announce the bids. If the object and price is right, raise the paddle. Continue until you are the only bidder remaining.

Absentee bidding If your are unable to attend the auction, simply place an absentee bid at least 1 hour before the sale and we will bid on the item for you. It is easy. Just submit your maximum bid online.

If you prefer to bid by phone, we will call you from the salesroom and bid on your behalf.
