Meta Isæus–Berlin In the deepest recesses of the cave the darkness envelops the shimmering brightness of the stalagmites. A flowing painting style captures the smell of damp and minerals. At the heart of the mountain grotto water drips and light shines through an opening in the roof. Here new formations of shining crystals are formed. With an exceptional energy and a painterly sensuality Meta Isæus–Berlin has created a thoroughly unique visual language. Her creations are often based on the notion of mirroring, and on subtle shifts in reality. This generates a tension in her work and a vertiginous feeling in her compositions. Isæus–Berlin graduated from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 1993. The painting ‘The Cave’ was executed in the mid 1990s when the artist had begun to progress into painting after years of mainly working with installations. Since 2006, when a major solo show of Isæus–Berlin’s work was

shown at Liljevalchs Konsthall in Stockholm, painting has been her principal mode of expression. However, her ongoing exhibition at Waldermarsudde, ‘Nattlogik’ (5th October 2019 – 16th February 2020), sees a return to installation art, but in combination with new paintings. Meta Isæus–Berlin’s painting work has been described as intelligent and passionate. In Sweden her art has been exhibited at, for example, Bror Hjorth’s House in Uppsala, Borås Konstmuseum and Liljevalchs Konsthall. Martin Wickström Ahead of Martin Wickström’s last exhibition ‘Paradiso (Out of the Red)’, that took place during the winter of 2018, Galerie Forsblom described his work brilliantly: ‘From the breath–taking play of light across building facades to dizzying mountain passes, Martin Wickström combines paintings, models and ready– mades in intricate installations into presentations ranging from a personal

family album to the international political arena. In Wickström’s work, psychoanalysis and semiotics meet in an interaction between the documentary and private life. Previously existing cultural material – documentary photographs, portraits of film stars from days gone by, or fragments from a Spiderman cartoon – mingle with personal experiences and elements from recent history. Everything is skilfully combined in a balancing act between pop art and Swedish melancholy. Something seductive emerges from Wickström’s


process: in the colouring, highlights and brushwork. At times the shimmering sediment of the enchanting painting is shattered by sawed off and white– painted shapes, brutally screwed to the surface of the painting – a silhouette of a residential complex or a simple office chair. The sign occupies the foreground, though its information is greatly reduced. Meanwhile, these components demand to be anchored in a room other than the one depicted. The perspective shifts from signs to motifs, from mass culture to melancholy.’

Karin Broos Karin Broos is above all known for her photo–realist motifs, found in everyday life and her own environment. Her subjects centre on the home, the studio and the nature of Värmland. But with the series of paintings which the piece in the auction ‘Ny generation’ forms part of, Broos has also directed her attention eastwards towards Latvia.

Broos portrays women’s lives at different ages. By using photography as her template she examines differences and gaps between painting and photography. Broos finds her inspiration in contemporary artists such as Gerhard Richter, Edward Hopper and Ola Billgren, as well as late 19th century masters like Anders Zorn and Vilhelm Hammershoi. The figures in her paintings are often depicted with their backs turned to the observer or averting their eyes. The dramatic shifts between light and shade suggest an undertone of melancholy and dark thoughts in what are, on the surface, everyday scenes. Karin Broos’s major public breakthrough came with an exhibition at Kristinehamns Konstmuseum in 2008. During the winter of 2015/2016 a major solo show of her work, entitled ‘Karin Broos – Still Life’, was shown at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde in Stockholm. The exhibition subsequently toured the USA for two years. In 2019 and 2020 the exhibition, with new pieces added, will be shown in several locations around Sweden, including Linköpings Konsthall, Vandalorum in Värnamo, as well as Magasinet in Falun in conjunction with the Carl Larsson 100th jubilee.

Ola Billgren The photographic image has always played a significant role in Ola Billgren’s working process. In the 1960's, when his photorealist art sharply mirrored his own environment, the inspiration came from films and literature, the illustrated press and his everyday. During the 1970's Billgren developed a freer painting style. With a newfound sense of artistic freedom he was able to further investigate the possibilities of painting. He was now an established artist, exhibited internationally and chosen to represent Sweden at the Venice biennale of 1971. Billgren’s academic, almost scientific, approach to painting allowed him to continue developing. He sought out new challenges. In the 1980's he again broke away from his earlier motifs. The artist now gazed out across European cities and urban scenes, both from a street– level perspective and from the top of cathedrals. The colour red emerged and stretched out across the canvases, where previously it had only touched the surface, as in ‘Sagan (Snövit)’ from 1987. In the 1990's Billgren created almost monochrome paintings in which the motifs were barely visible beneath layer upon layer of paint. Photographs were still important as templates and inspiration, but the painterly quality of colour was given an increasing prominence and was what carried Billgren’s paintings forward. The piece ‘Män vid havet’, executed in 1995, is an excellent example of this period in Billgren’s artistic career. ‘– In 1995 we made a longer journey to Italy. We travelled, for example, to Pompeii, and visited Tivoli and Villa d’Este. Ola took lots of photographs

during the entire trip. When we got back he developed the images and they inspired his painting work’, Anita Nilsson Billgren recounts. The result of the trip was a series of paintings with classical motifs. They attest to the importance of the trip and the extent to which it left an impression on Billgren’s work. In the artist’s abstract surfaces a classical idiom, architec– tural details and images of sculptures began to appear. The painting in the auction, ‘Antikstudie’, is clearly inspired by the artist’s visit to Italy a few years prior. What begins as an already distinct piece of painting is transformed by the artist’s hand and given a dream–like, evocative resonance. Cecilia Edefalk Cecilia Edefalk’s art always deals with the relationship between photography, painting and the existential qualities of the observing eye. She oscillates between portrait and mirror image, archetype and icon, and between original and replica. The motifs are repeated in order to give the images greater impact and highlight the distinctive features of each painting. As a result, ‘Venus II’ has several ‘sister’ paintings. Rather than any of the images being the first or last in the series they form an entity together, typical of Edefalk’s working process. Repetition of the same motif is nothing new in art. On the contrary, within Western art history repetition and appreciation of the ‘original’ has a long tradition, which is particularly true when it comes to religious art. This awareness of the sacred also emerges in Edefalk’s work. During the 2000s she became interested in the imagery of classical antiquity. Edefalk’s series often reference popular culture whereas here she reacts to art and religion from thousands of years ago: Venus – the classical female figure whose shape has inspired artists throughout time, from Botticelli to Man Ray, Matisse to Yves Klein. Edefalks light–coloured paintings play with daylight and the observer’s gaze. Edefalk is skilful in using the structure of the canvas,

combining rough areas with thin layers of light colours that give a weightlessness and luminosity to the motifs. At the same time, the sparseness of colour puts the focus on the practice of painting. Cecilia Edefalk’s suite of light–coloured paintings with classical motifs have been exhibited at, for example, the former Galleri Brändström & Stene in Stockholm, Gothenburg Museum of Art, as well as in the Kunsthalle Kiel, which showed her exhibition ‘Cecilia Edefalk, in der Antikensammlung der Kunsthalle zu Kiel’ in 2007. Edefalk’s video installation ‘24–Hour Venus’ (2009) was shown in the exhibition ‘Vita Lögner’ at Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm during the winter of 2011. The figure, a Venus sculpture, remained static, fixed on the screen whilst, depending on the hour of the day, light moved like brushstrokes across it.

Ola Billgren Ola Billgren has been called both a theorist and a sensualist and his work captures the historical and the contemporary in one and the same picture. Billgren’s paintings are characterized by duality and ambiguity, both in terms of expression and content, and the dreamy presence is unmistakable, from his photorealistic works of the 1960’s to the romantic touches of his later–period painting. In the 1960’s when non–figurative painting still dominated, Ola Billgren, driven by his interest in history, began to produce realistic and representational art. In Billgren’s paintings from the 1960’s and 1970’s the inspiration came from contemporary, urban life, from literature and from films, and from the illustrated press. He attracted much attention and went on to represent Sweden in a number of exhibitions, including the 1967 and the 1971 Paris Biennales (celebrating young artists) as well as at the Venice Biennale in 1976. During the 1970’s he painted several portraits of friends and other persons that he idolized or found inspiring. This painting, depicting a female dancer sitting on a chair with stretched ankle, is part of a series inspired by docu– mentary photographs from the 1800’s. It has a dancing partner in the painting ‘Porträtterad I’ from the same year. That painting represents a man bowing down or inviting you to dance. Together they form a couple that brings to mind Picasso’s Blue and Rose periods in the early 1900’s. The whole series by Billgren was exhibited at Galleri Engström in March 1979.

Per Kirkeby When Per Kirkeby passed away in May 2018, at the age of 79, he left behind a fantastic legacy of paintings, sculptures in brick or bronze, graphic art, drawings, texts and video works. Kirkeby was an incredibly creative and brave artist. He is considered Denmark’s most prominent artist of the 20th century and holds an indisputable place within international art history as one of the most important painters and sculptors in Europe. Early on in his career he veered towards pop art, but later progressed into a more abstract expressionist painting style. In the 1960s his performance art associated him with famous Fluxus artists such as Joseph Beuys and Nam June Paik. His big breakthrough came in 1978 when Kirkeby participated in the Venice Biennale and his work caught the attention of an international audience. In his youth he had studied geology and his interest in that subject is visible in all of his artistic modes of expression. He found his motifs in the landscape and in nature. The paintings all share a strong structure; forceful brushstrokes, layer upon layer of forms and lines coming together to create their own

topography. Kirkeby’s brick sculptures have a direct connection to the Danish soil. Using burnt clay he created large spatial installations on the border between sculpture and architecture. A great example of this is the sculpture ‘Wanås’, created for the Wanås Konst sculpture park in 1994. The smaller sculptures he kneaded out of clay himself, the traces of his fingers still visible in the heavy bronze casts. During Kirkeby’s five decade long artistic career he has been exhibited at well–known institutions such as the Tate Modern in London, Museum Kunstpalats in Düsseldorf, at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art outside Copenhagen, as well as in numerous galleries around the world.

Bjarne Melgaard Bjarne Melgaard was born in Australia in 1967 to Norwegian parents. He was educated in Norway and the Netherlands and is currently living in New York. His career began in the mid 1990s with paintings, sculptures and installations executed in a striking neo–expressionist style. In Melgaard’s art we encounter a highly personal poetry mixed with chaotic and provocative messages. He is an artist whose vibrant paintings often linger on subjects that border on social acceptability. His art repeatedly explores subcultures and has through the years dealt with shocking and provocative issues such as drugs, sex, violence and death. Yet, the searching and tender side of humanity and above all our desire for love and intimacy is just as often the focus. Melgaard’s art is based on fundamental human needs. It is often difficult for the observer to determine what are wild fantasies and what are actual personal histories – from the artist’s perspective very private ones. Recurring themes are sexual experiences and homosexual love, his characters often representing one of the artist’s many alter egos. The two bronze sculptures look like adult males but with the body proportions of children. They come in pairs and are designed to stand close together in configurations that radiate protection and solidarity rather than representing sexual positions. Melgaard’s work is represented in many important public collections, for example at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Moderna Museet in Stockholm and in the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen.

Lena Cronqvist Childhood. The moment when life is fresh and exciting and you learn something new everyday. Hours spent in make–believe worlds. Days of skipping–ropes endlessly swinging round and round during break times and afternoons. Lena Cronqvist tenderly captures this magical time with her sculptures. Her girls are brave, playful and strong–willed. Since the 1970's Cronqvist has been one of Sweden’s most celebrated artists. With a unique artistic confidence, great intimacy and a tangible sensuality she has portrayed her experiences of growing up, being a mother and of family life. Her childhood continues to be a recurring theme, explored in depth by Cronqvist in both paintings and sculptures. It was in the 1990's that Cronqvist began to explore sculpture as an art form in earnest and during the last decade she has stood out as one of the most interesting sculptors of our time. The early sculptures, some of which were created during times spent in New York with her writer husband Göran Tunström, were mostly small.

As the years passed her smaller terracotta figures have been replaced by increasingly large bronze sculptures, yet the subject matter has remained the same – young girls. But the girls are different. They are bigger, almost life–size, more ‘open’ and seem to have discovered new aspects to life. And because they are cast in bronze, a lasting material, there is now the possibility for them to play outside and live forever. Cronqvist’s bronze sculptures can be found in many public collections. A group of five girls, similar to the present object, is located on Södermalmstorg in Stockholm, offering a slice of everyday joy to people passing a part of the city currently undergoing transformation. This spring the painted sculpture ‘Stående flicka med paraply’ was unveiled in Linköping’s ‘Seminarieträdgården’ park. Other public sculptures include: ‘Hand i hand’, installed in the park of the Rackstad Museum in Arvika, ‘Flicka i balja’ in Norre Katts park in Halmstad and ‘Flicka som räcker ut tungan’ on Brunkeberg square in Stockholm. In Karlstad ‘Två flickor’ is standing outside Värmlands Museum. It is also possible to view ‘Flicka i balja’ at the Sven–Harry Art Museum in Stockholm.

Rirkrit Tiravanija & Tomas Vu Rirkrit Tiravanija (b. 1961, Buenos Aires) is without doubt one of the most influential artists of his generation. His work continues to explore the possibility of creating spaces where people can meet, even in today’s modern technological society. This is particularly evident in his now iconic perfor– mance, begun in the 1990s, where he cooks food in the gallery for the visitors. Neiman Center for Print Studies. He has executed and overseen a number of collaborative print works with, for example, artists such as Kiki Smith, William Kentridge, Jasper Johns and Kara Walker. Marie–Louise Ekman Signed Marie–Louise De Geer Bergenstråhle, like all her work during the 1970's. It represents an especially productive period in her life. She predominantly used two painting techniques: oil on canvas or gouache painting on silk. In both cases she employed, as a rule, black outlines similar to comics. The paint had to dry before the outlines were added using a very fine marten–hair brush. If it was made with oils the drying period could be as long as three weeks before the outlines were painted on. Gouache paints dry quicker and the outlines could be applied after a day or two. ‘Staden I’ has an unusual story behind it. Ekman had participated in an art fair in Paris with her then gallerist Jan Runnqvist, who ran Svensk– Franska Konstgalleriet and Galerie Bonnier in Geneva. Two large oil paintings by Ekman were amongst several works of art destroyed in a fire at the art warehouse where they had been stored. As a result Ekman decided to redo the painting ‘Staden I’ from memory. She did this using gouache painting on silk and in a slightly smaller scale than the painting destroyed in the fire. The style is wonderfully precise. The underlying colour of the silk emerges in the surface of the street. The motif is typical of Ekman at the time. She employs the same ‘street idea’, with absurd scenes visible through windows, in her films ‘Hallo Baby’ from 1975 and ‘Mamma, pappa, barn’ from 1978, as well as in many of her paintings. The sculpture in the middle of the street is also typical of her 70s period. It is an absurd anti–style, mocking of culture. The colour pink has been, and continues to be, a favourite right through her artistic career. In her latest exhibition at Galleri Bohman–Knäpper in October 2019 pink is everywhere. During a long artistic life, including periods as the director of the Royal Institute of Art and the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, her desire to shock has abated and been replaced with a distinct sense of melancholy. But what endures is her remarkable and individual perspective on the world. She observes our civilisation, our lives, our homes and our streets as if she was a sharp–sighted spectator from outer space. The present painting is a striking example of this. Nathalie Djurberg Nathalie Djurberg is one of Sweden’s most internationally sought after artists. She is continuously working on new projects together with her partner Hans Berg, who makes all the music that accompanies her pieces. The relationship between humans, animals and forces of nature is the constant, vibrant theme that occupies their shared universe. Stop motion animations using clay figures, spatial installations and sculptures form the foundation of their work. In their world the viewer comes face–to–face with instances that many would try to avoid: that which is ugly, difficult to explain and offensive. But what makes Djurberg’s art bearable is the humorous undertone that runs through the exaggerations and the excesses. The work has shocked, fascinated and surprised the entire art world. Yet their intention has never been to provoke, rather by mixing darkness and humour they want to examine suppressed feelings of shame and fear by calling attention to things that are heavy and difficult, having the courage to feel, and by discussing tough issues such as violence, disgust, desire and taboos. This is their driving force. Last summer the largest solo exhibition to date of Djurberg and Berg’s animations, sculptures and music, ‘En resa genom träsk och förvirring med små glimtar av luft’, was shown at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Over the last decade they have had a strong presence on the international art scene, previously exhibiting at the Venice Biennale, The New Museum in New York and the 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai as well as at the Lisson Gallery in London, Zach Feuer Gallery in New York and with Gió Marconi in Milan.

Jim Dine The heart has been a central subject throughout Jim Dine’s artistic career and is a recurring feature in his paintings, drawings, sculptures and graphic art. His use of this universal, uncomplicated symbol enables both himself and the viewer to apply their own emotions and ideas to the form. The heart becomes a blank page that can be filled with content and meaning. Dine began his career at the end of the 1950s as one of the youngest in a generation of

artists that sought to move away from abstract expressionism. With his legendary happenings in New York he challenged the prevailing ideas of what was art at the time. At the Judson Gallery he exhibited, together with Claes Oldenburg, ‘assemblages’ made from objects he had found on the streets of New York. Painting, however, was the medium that Dine felt most at home with. He has described how his painting is a kind of process of

correction where he repeatedly reworks the image. Colour is added, removed and revised until a result is finally achieved. Dine’s art has been strongly associated with his range of subjects – he has worked on each series of motifs, including hearts, bathrobes and tools, in a number of different techniques and made them his own. They never involve a simple repetition. Each work is a unique interpretation in its own right. Due to his use of seemingly everyday

objects and the time of his breakthrough Dine is often portrayed as a pop artist. It is a description that is only partly fitting to describe his work, and far from encompasses his entire long and productive career. Inspiration from abstract expressionism never quite left him and he has called himself both a romantic and a maximalist.


John Chamberlain Abstract expressionism was the art movement that cemented the reputation of New York as the new post–war capital of contemporary art. Characterised by its emphasis on intuition, movement and spontaneity, it was epitomized by leading artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Joan Mitchell. John Chamberlain became the first artist to develop abstract expressionism in earnest from two–dimensional painting into physical objects. His catchwords whilst working were ‘fit’ and ‘choice’ – two constants that in combination with Chamberlain’s natural ability allowed him to turn metal automobile parts into avant–garde artworks. He had begun working with metal and automobile parts towards the end of the 1950's, material that in the USA of the fifties and sixties was both easy to find and cheap. In 1960 Chamberlain had his first real gallery show at the legendary Martha Jackson Gallery. Despite hardly selling any pieces the critics loved him and the following year he was included in the exhibition ‘The Art of Assemblage’ at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His sense of detail, his compositions (‘choice’) and combinations (‘fit’) of the chosen metal parts created sculptures that merged movement with strength, raw edges with shiny surfaces. They are intuitive and expressionistic objects that despite their weight possess a great deal of elegance. During the 1980's, when ‘Le First’ was executed, Chamberlain mainly worked in ambitious, vertical lines, which the present sculpture is an example of. Here the artist has managed to transform the colours of abstract painting into soft folds and rounded shapes. Chamberlain insisted that the most important part of being an artist was to know when to stop. Chamberlain’s ambition (and talent) for stopping at the right moment demonstrates a sense of humility towards his materials and the work. He did not seek to merge the different parts into a tightly coherent whole, but rather wanted the chosen components to still be distinguishable. This is the reason why he left visible the joins where the parts had been welded together, and why he never painted or reshaped the parts once they had been assembled. John Chamberlain is today considered one of the most important artists of the post–war period. David Hockney David Hockney (b. 1937) belongs to that highly distinguished but rare group of artists that can claim to be living legends. As an important representative of the pop art movement in the sixties Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. Hockney’s early move to the USA, which was his principal home between 1964 and 2008, inspired many of his now iconic motifs, for example sun–drenched swimming pools, as in the piece ‘A Bigger Splash’ (1967, Tate, London). Hockney continued to work on this theme in the monumental (2x3 metres) composition ‘Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)’ from 1972. It is considered the most expensive painting by a living artist after it was sold for a staggering price of 90.3 million US dollars at Christie’s New York on the 15th of November 2018. Hockney’s artistic greatness resides in the uncompromising way in which he constantly challenges and continues to explore new ways of expressing himself. All in his own unique way. As an artist Hockney has worked in varying techniques including painting, drawing, graphic art and photography. But, he has also impressed with outstanding scenography for major productions at the Royal Opera House in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York etcetera. His 1980s photo collages (where sometimes hundreds of photographs were joined together to create compositions influenced by a Cubistic sense of space) and his ‘fax art’, where he simply sent art works through a fax machine, are all examples of Hockney’s never–ending experimentation. In his seventies (!) Hockney began to explore new techniques again when in 2009 he got an iPhone for the first time. The project resulted in a series of innovative works executed on his iPhone or iPad and exhibited across the world. As if this wasn’t enough Hockney is also the author of a number of serious texts

on the history of art including ‘Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters’ (2001) and ‘A History of Pictures’ (2016), written with Martin Gayford. The always current and eternally energetic Hockney recently left the USA (having had California as his main base for more than five decades) for Normandy in France. The unrelenting heavy smoker apparently, according to himself, prefers the lifestyle there and aims to continue to work until the day he dies (‘I’d like to work and paint and be able to smoke and eat in a restaurant… thank God for Normandy. The French know how to live. They know about pleasure’). Hockney’s latest work, ‘La Grande Cour, Normandy’, was shown at Pace Gallery in New York during September and October 2019. This autumn’s Contemporary Art & Design sale presents ten graphic works by Hockney. The department is crowned by Hockney’s double portrait ‘Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy’ from 1976. Additional works include prints such as ‘Tulips’ from 1973, and ‘Flowers, Apple and Pear on a Table’ from 1986.
