Pbr ceo Welcome to the 2009 Built Ford Tough World Finals – it promises to be one of the closest finishes in our 16 years in Las Vegas. Kody, Guilherme and J.B. have absolutely dominated this year, and I salute them for an outstanding season. I salute all our great riders for what has been our most competitive year ever. The PBR is not for all bull riders, only the best – the ones who have the heart to excel. Through a system based on fairness, integrity and competition, the PBR continues to develop great talent. It makes our entire organization proud to see the level of ability and the professionalism in the PBR bull rider today. It seems like every season, all of our athletes – two-legged and four-legged – get better and better. So when you consider that the World Finals brings the very best of both together, it hits you – these two weeks in Las Vegas are going to be the best bull riding event in history. It’s because of the amazing talent of our athletes that we continue to grow, and that we can offer new formats to more fans. We’re heading back to New York next season for the fourth time. We’re staging a one-day, tournament-style event in the brand-new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. We’re taking the World Cup to new levels, and I’m excited to announce its new

location while we’re here in Las Vegas. We’ve been blessed with great success, and believe me, I know that the number one reason is you. The fans continue to astound me with their passion for this sport. And of course, none of this would be possible without our sponsors. Like you, our sponsors have come through for us in good times and bad, and we are eternally grateful. Every dollar spent on our sponsors’ goods and services is a dollar invested in the future of bull riding. Thank you for your support. Finally, as another season closes, I would like to thank the PBR staff and crew. They continue to amaze me with their devotion and hard work. Once again, welcome. Now settle back – or perhaps I should say move to the edge of your seat - and enjoy our closest title race ever! Very best regards,

2009
Welcome to the 2009 PBR World Finals- what an exciting year it has been! This is the closest World Champion race we have ever seen in our 16-year history. It really made it a fun season to be a fan of the sport-watching these guys slug it out and continue to trade and jockey for position right up until the start of Las Vegas. We have three very different guys who are the top contenders to be the 2009 PBR World Champion. All are riding at the very top of their game. Kody Lostroh’s form is as near text-book perfection as you can get. J.B. Mauney has a “never say die” attitude and can be a little wild or crazy-but that is when he makes some of his best rides. He doesn’t quit trying until his head hits the ground. And if you look at Guilherme Marchi, you have to call him Mr. Consistency. Just look at what he has done the last several years; there is no one who has been as consistent as Guilherme. He is the defending World Champion and on the verge of being the first guy to go back-to-back in PBR world history. What makes the World Finals so exciting to watch, and be a part of, is that it is the ultimate test for a bull rider. It is the ultimate test to become a World Champion-you are getting on more bulls and you are getting on the rankest bulls. The pressure is the highest and the media attention is the most intense. Kody, J.B. and Guilherme are all very, very capable. Whichever one winds up being the World Champion, I won’t be surprised.

It is a very evenly matched race. When youth and experience intersect, you are at your best. All three of these guys have that element. I’ve seen all three do well in Las Vegas before. They can all handle the bright lights and the pressure. The bull draft can play an important part in their success. The guys will need to make good rides to get themselves as high up in the bull draft as possible. The World Champion race will also be dramatic for the bulls. One of the things I really like about the PBR is that to be the World Champion Bucking Bull, you have to prove yourself in Las Vegas. It isn’t a popularity contest, it is an earned title. The bulls have to do well all season long to be in the running for World Champion Bucking Bull and then they have to close the deal in Las Vegas-just like the guys do. I feel like the PBR has the most passionate fans in the sport. Your enthusiasm and electricity really fills the Thomas & Mack Arena and it really fuels the riders. I can tell you from experience that it is your support that makes a difference to each and every rider. So let’s all sit back and relax-or stand up and cheer- and enjoy the experience. It is going to be a memorable World Finals!

Kody Lostroh rides Julio Moreno’s Troubadour for 94.5 points during the championship round of the 2009 Fresno Built Ford Tough PBR event.
JanuaRY 17: losTRoh seTs The baR fresno, calif. - it was one for the ages. He made it look effortless, but Kody Lostroh said afterward his 94.5-point matchup with Troubadour in the short go of the Table Mountain Casino Invitational in Fresno was a constant battle. “On that bull you’re not supposed to be able to make a mistake and get away with it,” said Lostroh, who takes home a $60,960 check for winning both rounds and the event. “He was kicking hard and getting it on. My hips kept getting shifted out there and I had to keep putting them back where they needed to be.” “It looked like he was in total control,” said Clint Adkins, a PBR in-arena announcer. “Was he having to work? Absolutely. You’re not just going to sit up there on a bull like that and say, ‘OK, I’m here. Let’s go for a ride.’ He may have been working, but it was a flawless effort.” The trip was not unlike the one Lostroh had a year ago in Portland when he scored 93.50 points. This time out, however, the 23-year-old from Colorado acknowledged it took second, third and fourth efforts to win out over Troubadour.

sacraMento, calif. - Strong words, tempered only by acknowledgment of his youthful naiveté, seem to be the overwhelming reaction to Kasey Hayes’ throwing his face mask Sunday afternoon. In Round 2 of the Sacramento Classic, the 23-year-old drew Blind Date. It was a bull he was expected to ride, but instead Hayes was bucked off in just 2.6 seconds, and reacted by throwing his facemask at the 2,000-pound bull. “There’s a big difference between someone who’s 20 or 21 and me, who’s 60, and been in the business for 40 years,” said Steve Katich, whose family-operated ranch in Washington
owns the bull. “I don’t disrespect Kasey. I disrespect the lack of judgment that he showed.” That lack of judgment took everyone by surprise. As a direct result of his actions, which were broadcast on national television, the Conduct Committee decided that Hayes will be fined $7,500 and will make a public apology during the PBR’s next VERSUS broadcast. Furthermore, he will have to enroll in an anger management program, and if he does not complete the program, he will be suspended for three Built Ford Tough Series events. “That’s justifiable,” Katich said. “I wanted something done and, like I say, you ain’t going to hurt that 2,000-pound bull, but the point is the lack of professionalism.” Hayes, who is in fourth season on the Built Ford Tough Series, was “remorseful about it and apologetic.”

JB Mauney and Tom Teague at the 2009 Winston-Salem Built Ford Tough PBR event.
Winston-saleM, n.c. - J.B. Mauney made no bones about it earlier this week when he said he wanted an opportunity to ride the reigning 2008 PBR World Champion Bull. In two weeks he’ll get his chance in Oklahoma City. The North Carolina native, who brought nearly 50 family members with him to Winston-Salem, was disappointed last week when Tom Teague said that he felt no one could ride his prized bull Bones, and challenged Marchi on NBC. Marchi had already been bucked off Bones twice, and Mauney thought that his current status as the No. 1 bull rider in the world coupled with the hometown crowd should have been enough to earn a shot. The Brazilian lasted only three jumps as the third time didn’t prove a charm for Marchi, who hit the dirt well before the 8-second whistle. Moments later Teague was interviewed on NBC and asked about Mauney’s comments from earlier in the week. When asked if he would challenge him to ride Bones, he said, “I’ll leave that to J.B., but I don’t think he can ride him.” Mauney, who was standing to Teague’s left, responded by saying, “That sounds like a challenge.”

JB Mauney becomes the first man to conquer Teague’s Bones for 92.5 points during the first round of the 2009 Oklahoma City Built Ford Tough PBR event.
OKLAHOMA CITY - It was a marquee heavyweight bout between a determined bull and one confident rider. In one corner, there was Bones, the undefeated Professional Bull Riders 2008 Bull of the Year. In the other corner, there was J.B. Mauney, the 2009 world title race leader who was out to shatter Bones’ perfect record. For the past two weeks, the showdown between Bones and Mauney has been one of the most highly touted matches in the PBR’s 16 seasons of pitting the world’s top riders against the toughest bulls on hooves. It created a buzz among fans when Bones’ owner, Tom Teague, claimed that no cowboy wearing spurs could stay on his star bull for the 8-second count. Mauney said he could conquer the beast, and Teague agreed to pay the superstar $20,000 if he could top Bones at this weekend’s PBR tour stop Oklahoma City. The match capped Friday’s performance of a Built Ford Tough Series show at the Ford Center where the NBC cameras were rolling, and the crowd was popping. After Mauney called for the gate to be opened, Bones exploded from the chutes and began spinning furiously to the right. But Mauney had taken a deep seat early in the ride and wasn’t about to let go. Bones was strong-willed. He spun faster than a nitrousfueled carnival ride, and made his usual toward-the-roof kicks. Mauney made precision moves and handled the centrifugal force. febRuaRY 9: poTTeR hanGs IT up Queensland, australia - “I’m going to hang my spurs up and call it quits.” Those were the words of Greg Potter, who, after 19 years of riding professionally, finds it difficult to say the word “retirement.” “It still puts a lump in my throat,” he said, “and fills up a tear in my eye when I think about it.” The popular rider was injured in Sacramento when he landed on his head after being bucked off his second round bull. Dr. Tandy Freeman had listed Potter on the PBR injury report as being out for an undetermined length of time. However, after the two spoke on Friday, Potter talked it over with his wife Jodie and the two decided it was better for the Australian native to err on the side of caution.

Porter’s trip is being coordinated through a group called M.V.P. Sports. He will be gone a total of 11 days. “I always said if they needed me to go back for any reason I’d sure enough go back,” said Porter, who noted that to the surprise of many it’s mid-winter and the weather will fairly cold. “Last year, me and (Michael Gaffney were) looking out the window one night in the barracks and there was all this snow. While he’s enjoyed the experience, especially the process of working with a coach, the nine-time World Champion is used to the intensity of performing at a high level. Because of his focus on perfection and his determination to do his best, Murray admits maintaining that smile isn’t always as easy as it seems. In any case, the 39-year-old King of the Cowboys is hoping that all the years of having one chance to “step up” for 8 seconds at a time will benefit him tonight, and that America takes notice of his effort.

After four weeks of suspense and two previous postponements, the South Dakota stock contractor was outwardly relieved when the scores came in and he knew Big Tex had defeated Bones in the highly anticipated bull-versusbull challenge during the championship round of the Pike Electric Invitational. “I can’t hardly talk,” said Berger afterward. “I’m elated.” Both bulls were available in the draft for the short go, and it was Mike Lee who stepped up and selected Bones. Zack Brown immediately followed the former World Champion by taking Big Tex. After Lee took Bones, PBR Livestock Director Cody Lambert said, “He’s a World Champion and he wants to win the event.” Unfortunately for Lee, he only lasted 2.5 seconds, which didn’t give Bones much of an opportunity to showcase his talent. J.W. Hart, who was in the Versus broadcast booth along with McBride, said he thought Bones was “good around the first corner,” which may well have been what helped the reigning World Champion Bull score 45.5 points. Immediately following Lee and Bones were Brown and Big Tex. Brown fared only slightly better than Lee, lasting all of 4.7 seconds, but it was enough for Big Tex to score slightly better than Bones. Big Tex scored 45.75 points, giving him the edge by a quarter of a point. An obviously disappointed Teague later said, “The bull bucked. What can I say?”

billings, Mont. - Calling every day a gift, PBR entertainer Flint Rasmussen is just glad that he’s able to go back to work. The Montana native, who suffered a heart attack on March 11, is returning to his job of entertaining the capacity crowd after missing four events on the Built Ford Tough Series. Rasmussen, who noted the irony of the timing, will perform at The NILE Invitational in Billings, Mont., not far from his home in Choteau. News of Rasmussen’s heart attack was stunning. Not only was it emotionally taxing for members of the “PBR family” and his fan base, but Rasmussen himself is one of the healthiest people associated with the organization. Rasmussen, who can be heard in a new PBR podcast posted at www.pbr.tv, said that doctors recently told him that it’s a good thing he was in “such good shape. That heart attack I had would have killed most people.”

oMaha, neb. – Kody Lostroh, who broke his nose in Round 1 of the Bass Pro Shops Shootout when he was struck in the face Friday night by a bull horn, also hyperextended his arm, which in turn may have torn ligaments on the outside portion of the elbow. The 23-year-old Lostroh had a Monday afternoon appointment with a doctor in the Denver area. Instead of answers about his immediate future, the Colorado cowboy left with more questions about his left riding elbow. “Actually, they found a fracture in my elbow they really didn’t think would be there,” said Lostroh when contacted late Monday night. X-rays indicate that one of the ligaments that attaches the upper and lower part of his arm across the inside of the elbow, “actually pulled a piece of the bone off from the rest of the bone.” A disappointed Lostroh added, “But the outside of my elbow is the problem.”

The North Carolina native became the fourth PBR rider in four years to claim the top bull riding prize at the annual Calgary Stampede. “I guess it worked out,” said Mauney in what may well be the understatement of the summer. Mauney said he wasn’t at all happy with his results from a year ago. When he was invited back again, the 22-year-old had a chance to prove how good he can be on an international stage … and what a difference a year makes. Mauney competed as one of 10 riders in Pool A of the tournament-style event. He opened the first three of four qualifying rounds with scores of 81, 80 and 89 before failing to make the whistle in the fourth round. In spite of low scores in the opening two rounds, Mauney had positioned himself on the third day to take a lead he would not relinquish. “This is the only [event] I go to that’s like this,” said Mauney of the tournament format. “It’s pretty fun mixing it up like that.”

auGusT 3: Move oveR, MaRchI san antonio - It took Muhammad Ali three fights with Joe Frazier to solidify his status in what is arguably the greatest heavyweight boxing trilogy of all time. Fifty years earlier, Jack Dempsey relentlessly knocked Luis Firpo to the canvas 11 times in just the first round alone, in what has since been called the greatest slugfest of all time. But it was a daunting 49-round fight between Joe Jeannette and Sam McVey at the turn of the 20th Century that most closely parallels the season-long battle going on between the top bull riders in the world on the Built Ford Tough Series. This past weekend, 22-year-old J.B. Mauney put together a combination of rides that gave him his third event win of the season, propelled him to second in the world and – just a week after Kody Lostroh won his fourth event of 2009 – set up what is fast becoming a classic bull riding battle for the ages. Mauney was less than pleased with his effort in Tulsa, especially coming off the $100,000 pay day he had in Calgary in mid-July, and responded by riding all three of his bulls at the Bud Light Invitational in San Antonio. Mauney has qualified for the championship round more times (17) than any other rider on the BFTS. However, both Lostroh and Guilherme Marchi, the defending World Champion, have been more successful in the final round than Mauney. Initially it looked as though Mauney was going to come up short yet again, but a controversial call gave the North Carolinian the option of a re-ride. One of the judges threw a flag indicating the bull had caused a foul when it caught a horn in the chute gate. Mauney not only took the option, but he called for the same bull to be reloaded in the chute. With L.J. Jenkins looking on from the shark cage, Mauney made it look easy in his second attempt by making the 8-second whistle, earning a mark of 89 points from the judges and claiming the event win.

It’s been nearly 30 years since Al Michaels first asked that question when an undersized, less talented U.S. hockey team stunned the world by winning gold at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York. It would have been a fitting question Sunday evening in Barretos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, when the United States came from behind by one full score to defeat the heavily favored Brazilians in the 2009 PBR World Cup. “Their mothers aren’t as proud of ‘em as I am right now,” said an obviously elated U.S. captain J.W. Top PBR superstars will ride in the largest, most technologically advanced entertainment venue in the world on Saturday, February 20 for the Dickies 2010 Iron Cowboy Invitational presented by WinStar World Casino. In a one-of-a-kind format created exclusively for Cowboys Stadium, the Dickies 2010 Iron Cowboy Invitational will be the first true, head-to-head competition in the history of the PBR. A total of twenty-four riders will qualify to ride at Cowboys Stadium – eight riders will qualify based off of the 2009 World Finals standings after Las Vegas and will receive a bye in the first round; fourteen additional riders will qualify based off of the 2009 BFTS standings as of January 31; and the PBR Competition Board will award exemptions to two riders. The riders will be paired up and then will each take on the exact same bull with the winner moving on to the next level. The winning rider will be determined by who obtains the highest score. If both riders buck off, the rider who stayed on the longest will move on. In the end, the rider who rides their fourth and final bull for the highest total points will be declared the winner and will take home the largest payout for a one-day event in the history of the PBR.

Sixteen rookies made it onto the Built Ford Tough Series in 2009. Five made it to Las Vegas. One will be crowned Daisy Rookie of the Year. The man leading a pack of hungry talent is Cody Nance. The Paris, Tenn. cowboy has won two Built Ford Tough Series events and over $125,000 on his freshman year on tour. “After my first three events on tour, I walked away with one win and was leading the rookie race,” recounted Nance. “So it has been a good season so far – unless Skeeter [Kingsolver} catches up to me.” “Cody is riding really good. But if I ride to my capability then it shouldn’t be a problem (to win the title),” said Kingsolver. “It is going to be a really good race. I grew up watching the PBR Finals on TV and just to be here is a dream come true for me, but my goal is to be Rookie of the Year.” Kansan Kingsolver trails Nance by $55,000- a sum easily made up when you consider the Finals event winner can leave with $300,000. Kissimmee, Florida’s Caleb Sanderson has $60,000. Aussie Pete Farley has won over $57,000. Elliott Jacoby has a little over $51,000. Nance, Kingsolver, Sanderson and Farley all easily qualified for their first PBR World Finals and Jacoby just made the cut. That means a full 12.5 percent of the Top 40 bull riders in the world are rookies. These men may be green, but it is also green that got them to Las Vegas. The amount of money these men have won is proof that they do indeed deserve to be here competing against the sport’s best. But despite Nance’s monetary lead heading into the Finals, there is so much cash to be won in Vegas that any rookie has a shot at taking the prestigious Daisy Rookie of the Year title and the bonus that comes along with it. There is absolutely nothing that Nance can take for granted.

Cody Nance gets help from reigning World Champion, Guilherme Marchi.
Kingsolver has yet to win a Built Ford Tough Series event, but he did put together a string of 10 consecutive rides this season – a consistency that is crucial to succeed in Las Vegas. Sanderson has a riding percentage of nearly 46 percent. Farley’s average score is above 86 but he has had injuries this season. Jacoby has the talent but possibly not the experience. In other words, any of these rookies could win enough money in Vegas to steal the title but the Rookie of the Year title really is Nance’s to lose. Kingsolver’s plan is to pick the bulls he can ride who will give him the most points. “I’m going in there to win,” stated Kingsolver, “so I’ll pick the bulls I can win on. It has to be a business decision. There are so many bulls to ride and so many rounds that I have to think like a businessman. Put it this way – I won’t be picking Uncle Buck.” “It will come down to what happens at the Final,” affirmed Nance of the battle to be the No. 1 newcomer.” My plan is to just ride as many bulls as I can.” That plan has worked for him so far. He has a 42 percent riding average, but when he makes the whistle he averages a big 87 points. He has already made it to 8 seconds aboard Super Duty (twice – for a 90 and a 91.5) and The Game (for a 91). Winning one of the last events of the regular season in Columbus, Ohio, not only added to Nance’s confidence- it added to his wallet. That win boosted him to 10th in the qualifier standings.
After riding in just 11 Built Ford Tough Series events, the young cowboy who was born in Kentucky cracked the Top 10 in money won for the season. Nance’s plan to win is also turning into a wise financial plan. But that plan does not include playing it safe at the bull draft. “It isn’t an ego thing for me (picking the rankest bulls). I have always enjoyed riding the rankest bulls- those they call unrideable. I believe there is no such thing. I do it for me- I know I can do it. So when it comes to the draft I’ll pick the bull I can get the highest score on because there isn’t a bull anywhere that I don’t think I can ride.” That belief in himself will be crucial for Nance. He has won big events on big bulls but he hasn’t come up against that many of the true greats yet – but not for a lack of trying. “I always wanted to get on The Game, but Brandon (Gasper) told me I had to wait until I was on tour and then pick him in the draft.” Nance did exactly that in Columbus. The bull is kept just 10 miles from Nance’s home and he’d been wanting to try to ride him for years. Nance comes off as confident but not cocky. And that unshakeable confidence may be key to winning the race. He’s never been to Las Vegas, but the 21-year-old is confident he can conquer the big city. “I know what I have to do. I’m not focusing on anyone else. I’m focused on what I’m doing,” he shared, “but if other people want to focus on me and what I’m doing- that’s fine.”

Tommy Lasorda admits there was a time when he wasn’t even aware of professional bull riding. But the Hall of Fame manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers said that all changed after a photo opportunity with several riders, and a chance meeting with Bo Derek. The 81-year-old ambassador of baseball didn’t say whether it was the toughness of the athletes or the sex appeal of the movie star, but what he thought would be a quick trip to an arena in Anaheim, Calif., turned into an experience that has since become a passion. “That is when I began to like professional bull (riding),” Lasorda said. Lasorda – who paid Justin McBride the highest compliment he knows by calling the two-time World Champion the Sandy Koufax of bull riding – has not only attended several events in the years since, but last year he invested in Deja Blu, a bull he coowns with Tom Teague. Lasorda is but one among a growing list of celebrities to have invested in bucking bulls, including athlete Chad Pennington, and horse trainer Carl Nafzger, comedians Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvall and Ron White, and musicians Bernie Taupin and Moe Bandy, among others.
“From the time I went to my first PBR event I just caught the fever and fell in love with the sport, the intensity and the competition.” said Pennington, who attended that event with several former teammates from the New York Jets. What separated the 33-year-old athlete from the others was that in the ensuing weeks and months following the Uniondale, N.Y., event, Pennington began researching how to get “involved in the bull business.” He subscribed to both Pro Bull Rider and Bull Pen magazine, began researching the sport via the Internet, and read everything related to the cattle industry and the cowboy lifestyle. “Now I’m really deeply involved in it,” said Pennington, who for the past two seasons has quarterbacked the Miami Dolphins, “and I love it.” Cody Lambert eventually introduced Pennington to J.W. Hart, who now handles all of his bucking bulls. His calves and cows are kept by Red Edmonds in El Campo, Texas. Pennington continues to immerse himself in the breeding side of the industry while still competing in the NFL, and said that following his football career he looks forward to purchasing a ranch of his own and taking a more hands-on day-to-day role. He did say that initially he’ll continue to use Hart and Ed-

monds while he makes the transition. Pennington, a self-described outdoorsman, relates to the cowboy culture. Larry the Cable Guy relates too, but for a very different reason. “I grew up a fan,” Larry explained. “My whole life existence from the time I was 5 years old until I was 15 was spent loading and unloading cattle trucks at the cattle barn next door. “But, yeah, I probably would not have gotten into the PBR without Tater (Porter), because Tater brought me in. Me being able to sponsor Tater, I learned the ins and outs of what was going on. “If it wasn’t for Tater,” he continued, “I probably wouldn’t be involved as much as I am now.” One is a famous comedian and the other remains one of the more popular professional bull riders. Together the longtime friends come by their friendship honestly. It started years ago, well before Dan Whitney created his now-famous character Larry the Cable Guy or anyone even recognized Tater Porter as one of the top bull riders in the world. Porter, a Florida native, was living outside of Orlando and Larry, a Nebraska native, was a radio personality for a morning show on a local Orlando station – WDIZ – and was hosting a remote special at Club Rodeo, a Central Florida country bar, when the two first met. “We kind of hit it off,” Larry said, “and we remained friends.” Larry and Tater even teamed up in 2008 to co-sponsor the Git-R-Done Invitational in Orlando. Meanwhile, Later that year, Lasorda was in Las Vegas when
Deja Blu made his Finals debut, and he told a story of asking Teague if he could talk with the bull beforehand. He said he wanted to tell the bull not to worry about all the fans, and that he thought he’d be better than Bodacious. Lasorda, long known for his motivational personality, said the bull seemed to nod his head. “So I said, ‘I’m reaching him,’” he said, “he’s understanding me, so I told him, ‘Your job is to throw that bull rider off, and your job is just beginning, but I got a good feeling about you. I believe, in my mind, you’re going to be better than Bodacious.’ And his eyes opened wider when I said that. Of course, he went out and threw the rider in two seconds.” While most celebrities are involved only from afar, Pennington is one of the few whose investment is on a daily basis. He plans a PBR career after his NFL run. But he noted that he’s a family man with three sons and wife to look after, and bucking bulls can be dangerous, so he’ll likely focus his attention more toward his breeding business. “I am over-analytical sometimes,” he said, “but that’s one of my strengths. I can retain a lot of information and remember a lot of different things, and then try to apply those things. “I ask a lot of questions because I want to know. I like to know why. I don’t want to just know an answer. I want to know the why about the answer because I’m trying to learn.” “I think it’s intriguing, for me as an athlete, to learn more about these other athletes, these bovine athletes,” he continued. “Learn about their nutrition, learn about how you take care of them, and learn about the breeding process – the different types of breeding programs – and there’s so much information out there for me to learn. I haven’t been able to even apply that in the field yet.” His pen is highlighted by the likes of Cat Man Do and newcomers Red Ranger and Space Cowboy, and he said he’s also learning about when and how much to buck his bulls, especially when it comes to Built Ford Tough Series events. While he admits to pursuing a few bulls that didn’t turn out as well as he hoped, he’s already had a good deal of success, which he attributes to the first bull he invested in: Cat Man Do. It would strain the imagination to claim that bull breeding is just like acting, or playing football, or managing a baseball team. It’s not. “Ah,” groaned Ty Murray into the phone. After a long pause, he finally said, “I don’t really know what to say. I’m probably the wrong guy to ask.” The question: Why has it been so difficult for any reigning World Champion in the PBR to win back-to-back titles? Jerome Robinson, who was inducted into the Ring of Honor in 1999, smirked when he was asked the same question at a Built Ford Tough Series event in Reno, Nevada. “What’s so difficult about it?” he quickly responded, with a question of his own. “It’s not easy, and it probably takes a little bit of mental toll, but a lot of it’s having to concentrate and dedicate yourself.” In 15 previous seasons, no rider has ever managed to win the title in consecutive years. Adriano Moraes won three, but the first two were spread out by seven years (1994, 2001) and then he won again five years later in 2006. Chris Shivers won in 2000 and again in 2003, while Justin McBride won his first in 2005 and needed two years to claim his second title in 2007. “It’s a big relief that I don’t think (anybody) understands about winning the world in bull riding unless you’ve experi-

enced it,” Shivers said. “You just let a big breath of air out and kind of relax a bit. “I don’t know why, but there’s not many people who put the effort out every single time and stay healthy that many years. It’s a hard way of life as far as you have to ante it up every time and do whatever it takes every single time. There’s very few guys willing to sacrifice everything, every ride.” Seven other greats of the sport – Tuff Hedeman (1995), Owen Washburn (1996), Michael Gaffney (1997), Troy Dunn (1998), Cody Hart (1999), Ednei Caminhas (2002) and Mike Lee (2004) – were not even able to win a second title, much less contend for back-to-back gold buckles, which begs the question of whether or not last year’s winner Guilherme Marchi has what it takes to become the first. Murray and Cody Lambert both said they think he’s capable of it. Shivers and Gaffney think so. “If there is a guy, it’s him,” Gaffney said. In fact, Gaffney went on the record in late September with his prediction that Marchi would become the first to accomplish the feat. As of press time, Marchi had just surpassed J.B. Mauney by 11 points for second place in the World Standings, but still
P BR WO R L D F I N AL S 2 0 0 9
Row trailed Kody Lostroh by 1,107.5 points with three BFTS events and the World Finals still to come. “Guilherme’s the type of guy that should be able to do that,” Shivers said. “He never really gets hurt. I don’t know what his technique is for staying out from under bulls, but I’ve never seen him get mucked out. I’ve never seen him get hurt in a bad way. “That’s one thing that will show in the long run, whether he gets his egg broke and really totaled out—how’s he going to recover? How’s he going to come back? How’s he going to react to the next step?” In 2008, after three consecutive years of finishing second in the standings, Marchi cruised relatively unchallenged to his first title when he won five events by riding 74.75 percent of his bulls, collected 16,841.5 points (including 3,572.5 at the Finals) and earned more than $1.5 million. During the past five seasons, he has been the most consistent rider in the world. Now in his fifth full season on the Built Ford Tough Series, only one year has Marchi ridden under 60 percent, and even then – 2006 – he covered 57.14 percent of his bulls. “Guilherme can put a bunch of good rides together in a

as Gaffney pointed out, “Over the past couple of years he’s just been phenomenal…and if you see him falter you’re aghast.” “Again, it’s our expectations,” he continued, “from a spectator’s or a fan’s point of view. … When you see Guilherme ride that many years in a row and that well, of course we’re going to put him on a pedestal and we’re going to expect great things.” “I do think it is ridiculous,” said Shivers, with regards to Marchi having an off-year. “I’ve been through that myself. You ride 20 in a row and then you buck off four, five and then you’re in a slump and you need to retire and you’re never going to be worth a (crap) for nothing and all that good stuff.” However, earlier this year, Moraes remarked that he didn’t
“over the past couple of years he’s just been phenomenal…and if you see him falter you’re aghast.” — Michael Gaffney Americans, who made it two Cup wins in a row. The Reno event came two weeks later, and afterward Marchi admitted that he felt fatigued. The admission probably explains why he had such a poor showing in the middle of two second-place finishes and an event win in Springfield, Mo. Robinson said that “He’s been a little hit and miss.” But as Murray said, “It’s not like he’s come back in his bid to repeat and has had an off year or a bad year.” It’s been quite the contrary. For any other rider, Lambert said, gaudy numbers like Marchi’s would be a “career year,” but

think Marchi thought about bull riding during the week, and that although the 27-year-old from Leme, Sao Paulo, Brazil has an opportunity to become the greatest bull rider the PBR has ever seen, he could be that much better if he had a coach. Murray agrees. Well, sort of. What the nine-time World Champion means is that to win back-to-back titles, it’s going to take someone “who wants more than one, and I don’t mean more than one later. “The guys who have won it up this point never said, ‘I want to be the greatest bull rider who ever lived.’ They said, ‘I want to be a World Champion.’”

row, and that’s what it takes to succeed,” Shivers said. This year he’s ridden in all 28 BFTS events and covered 48 of 80 bulls for a 60 percent riding average. He’s won two events – down three from a year ago with three events remaining – but he has 16 Top 10 finishes, including 12 in the Top 5. Only once this season has he gone two consecutive events without making the Championship Round. However, in Reno he went 0-for-3 in three long rounds for the first time in more than two years. To this point, his only disappointment came in Brazil when the heavily favored Brazilians lost the World Cup to the

“For me,” Murray continued, “my goal wasn’t to win a World Championship. My goal was to win more than anybody had ever won. … … I just remember that when I won my first world title…it just felt like one down and six to go.” Murray added that it’s about mentally conditioning yourself for the challenge of winning multiple titles in successive years, as opposed to merely being a Champion. In other words, “if they’re prepared for it” a professional athlete can make the mental adjustment to achieve “what they want to do.” Bull riders often talk about try and guts, but, at some point, as Shivers said, it’s about “desire and determination” to overcome a series of obstacles over an extended period of time. But there are those who talk of injuries, the mental toll, a shift in personal priorities and the fact that once a rider wins a title and the $1 million bonus that comes with it, chances are they’re no longer driven by the need to feed their family—it’s just not the issue it once was. Some even say that although in past eras riders had to compete more and spend longer stretches of time traveling from one dusty rodeo to another, the bull pen is deeper these days than in years gone by. Robinson, who qualified for the NFR 11 times, only partially agreed. He added that it’s probably more so a “coincidence” that no one has done it. “You can make up all those excuses and whine all you want,” Murray said, “but nobody cares. … It’s something that is going to happen. I can guarantee you it’s going to happen.” 8/28/09 10:02:59 AM

The value of pRepaRaTIon foR baTTle:
It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin.Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected. -Sun Tzu Bull riding is one of the most dangerous sports on earth. Lack of physical or mental preparation can equal disaster. And the 2009 season has been particularly brutal - taking its toll in broken jaws, femurs and ribs - lacerating scalps, ears, hands and faces. The men of the PBR are true athletes who train relentlessly. Those in the top physical condition can recover faster or ride through injuries that would defeat a lesser man. Lostroh has been doing everything he can to recover, but he has had a nagging shoulder injury that may make the non-stop toll of riding the toughest bulls difficult to handle. Marchi and Mauney are healthier, but a misplaced hoof or face-crushing horn could quickly change things. Injury not only sidelined Brown in the past, it also played into his decision to retire from the sport. He overcame his physical and mental obstacles and is now riding like a man ready to be king, but his final charge may have come too late in the season. Proof that Lostroh, Marchi and Mauney have been training

It is the briefest of battles, but for the combatants it is grueling. Victory can only be claimed at 8 seconds. To be 7.9 seconds is to leave the arena defeated with no rewards or glory. With seven days of competition, the winner of the PBR World Finals will be the man best prepared for battle. The amount of points available in Las Vegas means that statistically there is a field of 10 bull riders who could win the title 2009 PBR World Champion. But odds are in favor of Kody Lostroh, Guilherme Marchi or J.B. Mauney - the men who have battled the most valiantly all season long. However, Valdiron de Oliveira, Zack Brown, Sean Willingham, Ryan McConnel, Renato Nunes, Robson Palermo and Wiley Petersen are also prepared to fight for every point. The greats of the sport will tell you that talent will only get you so far. A big part of this sport is mental preparation, planning, practice and strategy. All the men in the Top 10 have already proven they have the talent; the question now is who has what else it takes to endure eight of the rankest bulls in the world - and fellow competitors who are among the toughest men on the planet. The Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu’s classic “Art of War” has been used by men looking to win battles for over 2,000 years. The top gladiators of the PBR would be wise to heed some of the advice of the great strategist if they want to be the last man standings-rewarded with gold, accolades and a treasure of a million dollars.

for this final battle all season is in the numbers, they have the top three riding percentages of all the men- 62, 61 and 58 percent, respectively.
The value of expeRIence: It is only one who is thoroughly acquainted with the evils of war that can thoroughly understand the profitable way of carrying it on -Sun Tzu
“this is a sport where if you do not know what you are doing, you can get killed” —Marchi Experience counts on the battlefield and the PBR’s biggest battle occurs in the Thomas & Mack Arena. This gives the advantage to the top three men: Marchi, Mauney and Lostroh. They have all already proven they can handle the pressure of Las Vegas. Marchi is the reigning champion and did exactly what he needed to do last season to accrue enough points in Las Vegas to clench the title to claim the title. But it was Palermo who was able to rise to the occasion and become the Finals Event Champion last fall. Petersen was also able to capture the World Finals Event title in 2007. Of the top men, McConnel has the least experience while Willingham is now one of the tour veterans. Brazilian power houses Nunes and Oliviera have enough years of competing at an elite level that neither man can ever be disregarded
The value of sTRaTeGY: Now the general who wins a battle makes many calculations in his temple ere the battle is fought. The general who loses a battle makes but few calculations beforehand. Thus do many calculations lead to victory and few calculations to defeat: how much more no calculation at all!It is by attention to this point that I can foresee who is likely to win or lose. –Sun Tzu Ty Murray has said many times that to be a great bull rider you have a countermove for every move the bull makes. When it comes down to be a text-book perfect bull rider, no man is as good as Lostroh. But the cowboys must not only be able to make split-second calculations, they also must have an idea of where they stand P BR WO R L D F I N AL S 2 0 0 9

in the points race at all times. A re-ride taken or denied could literally cost a cowboy a million dollars at this stage of the game. Marchi has proven that he understands the importance of strategy. After finishing runner-up year after year, by 2008 Marchi fully understood what he needed to do to win. Every bull he chose last year at the Finals was deliberate; every reride taken or denied was part of his master plan. Not only did he win the gold buckle, he almost won the Finals event.
The value of knowInG YouR eneMY: If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle. -Sun Tzu
“i’m going to do my jobride bulls. both kody and guilherme are rank riders and it is going to take a lot to beat them. but last year i was second; third the year before that. i’m ready for first.”
When the bull draft was introduced into the World Finals last year it changed the playing field. No longer was a cowboy’s opponent a random draw. Now a man could substantially increase his chance of victory by knowing his opponents strengths and weaknesses and choosing a bull that best fit his own riding style.
“i know what i need to do in las vegas to win”
—Mauney
The top men know they have to have a plan of attack going into the draft and they will have needed to familiarize themselves with each and every bull that has been hand-selected by PBR Livestock Director Cody Lambert. In order to win, a cowboy must choose the bull that he has the potential to receive the highest possible score on. But he must also choose a bull he believes he can ride. Having two rounds of Classic bulls adds to the drama. These animals, the top 3 and 4-year-old

The he wa waRRIoRs bulls from ABBI (American Bucking Bull, Inc.) competition are all formidable opponents. What makes them difficult to conquer is that they are not bulls the top cowboys have seen as much of this season. Look for the top gladiators to choose the Classic bulls that have already proven themselves this season and who they know score big points- animals like Black Pearl, Crosswired and Top Notch.
The value of knowInG whaT can anD cannoT be conTRolleD: “i battle the bulls, that is who i compete against” —Lostroh To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself. Thus the good fighter is able to secure himself against defeat, but cannot make certain of defeating the enemy. -Sun Tzu Bull riding doesn’t directly pit rider against rider. Each man can only make sure that he is physically and mentally prepared for the grueling seven days of competition. But there are things that can shake a weaker man’s mind and another rider’s success or failure can get inside the head of his opponents. As the regular season wound down, Lostroh, Marchi and Mauney battled to get into the short go at each of the final events. Uncharacteristically in Portland, none of the three could do it.The pressure may have finally gotten to them, but by the next weekend in Columbus they had returned to form with both Marci and Lostroh making it into the short go. There is no bigger treasure to a bull rider than the title PBR World Champion. The march toward Las Vegas has been soaked with blood and sweat. What may ultimately decide who next ascends the sport’s throne could be the most important attribute of any warrior-heart.
“i focus on the process, not on the outcome. there are a lot of points at the finals, and the finals will determine who wins. i can only control what i do. regardless of if i win or lose, i am honored to compete against men of this caliber” —Lostroh

P BR W ORL D F I N AL S 2 0 0 9
The Ring of Honor is more than just a physical ring. It is a fellowship. The actual ring is handcrafted of diamonds and gold, and features the PBR logo, recipient’s name, and the year he was honored. The concept behind the ring is even richer than the materials it is made from. The tradition began in 1996 by the PBR Board of Directors who wished to bestow laurels on its legends. They wanted a way to recognize the unique individuals who—through blood, sweat, heartache and handshakes—were instrumental to the past, present and future success of the sport. The PBR Ring of Honor Award is given annually to individuals who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the sport of professional bull riding, both in and out of the arena. Deciding on each inductee is no easy task. There have been many great competitors in the sport, but talent alone doesn’t earn the Ring. Some recipients hold multiple world titles while others have never known the weight of a world champion gold buckle. But in and out of the arena, all have devoted themselves tirelessly to the sport they love. They are all men of character and distinction—the rock upon which bull riding is built. Adriano Moraes, Justin McBride and J.W. Hart are the newest inductees into the Professional Bull Riders Ring of Honor. They were honored in the PBR’s hometown of Pueblo, Colo. earlier this year and now share an unbreakable bond with 27 other remarkable men.
J.w. haRT
When the PBR was founded over 16 years ago, one of the first cowboys to make a name for himself was J.W. Hart. Over the next 13 years, The “Iron Man” Hart earned his nickname one bull at a time. In a sport where athletes are plagues by injuries, Hart was tough and talented enough to keep going. He competed at 197 consecutive events, setting a PBR record that stood until 2007. Hart was just 18 when the PBR started but he was already wise beyond his years. Hart had a clear vision of what his sport could become and what a group of dedicated cowboys could accomplish. From the very beginning, Hart was an ambassador for the sport. Hart was always a PBR fan favorite, but he was also a cowboy’s cowboy. Seemingly cut from a cloth of an earlier era, Hart truly embodied the concepts of “heart” and “try” each time he entered the arena. “J.W. always brought pure cowboy toughness to the sport, and that is something I think is essentially important to our sport,” related Ty Murray. “You can have the greatest athlete in the world; you can have the besttrained guy in the world; you can have the guy who is the most technically correct—there are all these other attributes that someone can have. But I think the most important attribute is cowboy toughness—never say die, never quit. That never-ending determination is the single most important element. And to have a guy who embodies that, to help perpetuate our sport in each generation, is so important—and J.W. was one of those guys for his era.” After having to take time off for a serious injury, Hart unofficially retired in 2008. Hart rode his last bull on May 23 at the PBR event in Decatur, Texas. Appropriately enough it was a superstar from his own breeding program- Cat Man Do. Hart again served as the

RInG of honoR American team captain for the 2009 PBR World Cup competition in Brazil. In 2008 under his leadership, the Americans were able to beat Team Brazil, Team Canada, Team Mexico and Team Australia. Despite the overwhelming odds against them, Hart led his team to victory again this season. Hart’s talent helped him accomplish many impressive feats over the years—1994 Rookie of the Year; 2002 World Finals winner; thirty 90-point rides; six event wins; and 2004 U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Challenger Finals event winner. But it was his no-nonsense attitude and straight talk that helped him this season as he transitioned into the TV broadcast booth. Paired with his extensive knowledge of bucking bulls, due in part to his own success as a stock contractor, Hart continues to reach and educate fans about the sport he loves.
JusTIn McbRIDe
Two-time PBR World Champion Justin McBride has always been as American as apple pie. From a long line of cowboys and bull riders, his chosen profession came as no surprise, but his enormous success did. Despite roughstock events being in his blood, no one is born a great bull rider, and McBride excelled at the sport through hard work and gritty determination. He earned over $5 million during his 10-year career in the PBR., the most of any man in history. “Justin is the kind of guy I wanted to put my gear bag next to in the locker room,” shared Murray, “because he didn’t whine or make excuses. He did things the cowboy way—being tough and laying it on the line each time.” McBride’s talent was so immense that no one was surprised in 2005 when he won his first PBR World Champion title, and no one was surprised in 2007 when he shattered countless records. He broke the single season event wins record with eight event wins—the previous record was six. McBride eclipsed his own record set in 2005 for the most money won during the regular season. In 2007 he earned $835,321 and then went to Las Vegas and earned a bonus $1,000,000 for being the World Champion. He also surpassed Adriano Moraes’ record of 28 career event wins by chalking up 30 event wins to his credit. Before he retired, he won another two events. What did surprise many fans was his retirement last year at age 29. A bull rider as skilled and experienced as McBride could have had another decade in the spotlight. But McBride was ready to move
88 RInG of honoR
on—he had a country music career just taking off and a knack for being in the PBR broadcast booth. True to himself and his cowboy ideals, McBride would never just ride for the fame and fortune and knew it was his time to hang up his spurs.
aDRIano MoRaes
There is no bull rider as decorated as Adriano Moraes. The PBR’s only three-time World Champion (1994, 2001, 2006) Moraes is also the two-time Challenger Tour Champion and the second-highest money earner in PBR history with over $3.5 million won. But the real value of Moraes’ accomplishments can’t be measured in dollars or buckles. “Adriano is a true legend and has rewritten the history books on professional bull riding,” said PBR CEO Randy Bernard. “He took a chance and flew over here from Brazil in the late 80’s not speaking any English, very poor, but with a passion for riding bulls. His ability along with his passion helped him become one of the greatest, if not the greatest, bull riders of all time.” Last year at 38 years of age, Moraes retired. He had been the oldest man competing on the elite Built Ford Tough Series and qualified for the PBR World Finals more than any man in history. Moraes paved the way not just for himself, but for every young man from Brazil who came to America with a dream. Ednei Caminhas and Guilherme Marchi would not be PBR World Champions if not for their fellow countryman. Besides blazing the way, Moraes also served as mentor, friend and father-figure to dozens of Brazilian bull riders competing in the U.S. over the last 15 years. 1997 PBR World Champion Michael Gaffney (and fellow Ring of Honor member) reflected on Moraes, “He was a major player in building the PBR up to where it is today. His talent and charisma attracted so many fans to the sport. From the start he has been approachable and positive. He has such a strength of character and strong moral conviction that people have always really looked up to him.” “He’s won about everything you can win as far as a bull rider goes,” stated Cody Lambert, PBR Livestock Director, co-founder of the PBR and Ring of Honor member. “When we had the first PBR Finals he was there and he was our first PBR World Champion. In the couple of years that he competed in rodeos professionally, he went to the National Finals (Rodeo) twice and rode 19 out of 20 bulls; he was the National Finals Champion both times. When they talk about the all-time greats, he’s right up there at the top of the list.”

PBR co-founder Lambert was not only an exceptional bull rider, but a top-tier saddle-bronc rider as well. He qualified for the NFR seven times in bull riding and three in bronc riding, and appeared in the PBR World Finals every year through 1996, when he retired.
Branger was the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association bull riding titlist in 1985, and then turned pro. Despite that auspicious beginning, he retired in 2000 without a world title. His peers agree that he may be the greatest bull rider never to wear the crown.
Nuce qualified for the NFR 14 years in a row — an unmatched record. He was the 1985 PRCA World Champion bull rider, finished second in the world four times and won the 1994 PBR World Finals.
Cathey qualified for his first NFR in 1976 and his last in 1991. He qualified for the NFR 14 times, a record he shares with Ted Nuce.
daryl Mills 2002
jiM shoulders 1996
Mills’ bull riding career was relatively brief but undeniably brilliant. The 1994 PRCA World Champion bull rider was also the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association bull riding champion in 1990 and 1992.
Shoulders had 16 World Champion buckles to his credit — more than any other cowboy, ever. His 15th World Championship title was earned in 1959, at the first NFR.
harry toMPkins 1996
ty Murray 2002
Over the course of a dozen years, Tompkins managed to win five bull riding titles, two bareback titles and two all-around world titles. His first win came in 1948 and his last in 1960, cementing his place in history.
Murray is the greatest all-around cowboy who has ever lived. His seven PRCA all-around titles, his two PRCA bull riding titles and his remarkable career in the PBR earned the PBR co-founder the appropriate moniker “King of the Cowboys.”
donnie gay 1997
denny flynn 2002
Gay holds eight World Champion bull riding titles, a record yet to be broken. His dynamic personality and enthusiasm for the sport endeared him to fans and fellow competitors.
Flynn qualified for nine straight NFRs, from 19741982, and he shares the record for most NFR bull riding average victories with three. Flynn earned a score of 98 points on Red Lightning in 1979, the second-highest score ever awarded.

cody custer 2003
Mahan won six all-around World Championships with the PRCA and took home the PRCA World Champion bull riding title in 1965 and 1967.
jeroMe daVis 1998
Davis was the 1995 PRCA World Champion bull rider and a top PBR athlete. He is now a top bucking bull breeder, and mentor to a new generation of PBR stars.
tuff hedeMan 1999
Hedeman, the 1995 PBR World Champion, won three PRCA World Champion bull riding crowns, and was the NFR average winner in 1987 and 1989.
lane frost 1999
Frost was the 1987 PRCA bull riding World Champion and made history in 1988 when he was matched up against legendary bull Red Rock. His untimely death at the 1989 Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo changed the face of bull riding.
jeroMe robinson 1999
After qualifying for the NFR an impressive 11 times, Robinson eventually became involved the business side of the sport. He realized that traditional rodeo was using archaic ideas and systems, and helped to modernize the sport.

As a World Champion, family man and spiritual leader, Custer is a true role model. In 1992, he won the PRCA World Champion bull rider title, and after a long and successful career, retired from the PBR in 2003.

It’s hard to imagine that there was a time when skin color determined if a cowboy could enter an event. But Dightman persevered, and in 1957 got his PRCA card. He qualified for the NFR in 1964, and finished third at the event in 1968. He won both Cheyenne Frontier Days and the Calgary Stampede.
aaron seMas 2003
Semas is one of the founding fathers of the PBR and served on its board for over 10 years. When he retired in 2003, it was as one of the most consistent and toughest bull riders the sport has ever seen.
charlie saMPson 2004
Sampson was the first African-American ever to win the PRCA World Champion bull rider title. He qualified for the NFR in 1981 and won the gold buckle in 1982, 18 years after his mentor Dightman competed at the NFR for the first time.

troy dunn 2005
Dunn is the only Australian to ever win the PBR World Champion title and the only man to ever win the PBR World Finals event twice. Dunn served on the PBR’s board and was instrumental in the eventual formation of PBR Australia.
Michael gaffney 2005
During his career, Gaffney amassed thirteen 90-points rides and successfully rode the legendary Little Yellow Jacket twice in 2004, for 93.75 and 96.5. Gaffney was the 1997 PBR World Champion and retired in 2005 to bring his expert analysis to the PBR’s television broadcasts.
bobby steiner 2005
Steiner is respected for the way he played the game. In 1973 he won the PRCA World Champion bull rider title — and then retired. He was passionate about bull riding, but he recognized that it was just a game and retired when he reached his goal.
cody snyder 2006
In 1983 Snyder made history by becoming the first Canadian to be crowned the PRCA’s World Champion bull rider. He qualified for the NFR three additional times, and was the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association’s champion in 1986.
bobby delVecchio 2006
DelVecchio is proof that being a cowboy starts in your heart, not your zip code. DelVecchio grew up in the Bronx, but developed a passion for riding bulls. He qualified for the NFR six times, and in 1981 and 1982, was runner-up to the PRCA World Champion bull rider.
Phil lyne 2007
Two-time World Champion All-Around Cowboy Phil Lyne of Cotulla, Texas, was more than just a great bull rider. Lyne has the distinction of being the only cowboy to win the NFR average titles in three events: Bull Riding, Calf Roping and Steer Roping.
carl nafZger 2007
Nafzger is one of only 18 horse trainers to have won the Kentucky Derby twice. What people may not know is that Nafzger was a world-class bull rider — qualifying for the NFR three times in a 12-year career.

Ty Murray is a co-founder and former president of the PBR. His seven PRCA All-Around world titles and two bull riding World Championships, along with a stellar PBR career, earned him the nickname “King of the Cowboys.” The most decorated cowboy in history now serves as a television commentator and board adviser. Earlier this year he gained mainstream prominence when he participated on the hit CBS series “Dancing with the Stars.”

Cody Lambert has had as big an impact on the PBR as anyone. Aside from his distinguished riding career – he qualified for the NFR seven times in bull riding and three time as a saddlebronc rider – he played a significant role as co-founder of the PBR, a member of the Board of Directors, a former judge, and the architect of the protective vests worn by all bull riders. He is currently the livestock director for the PBR.
J.W. Hart was both a PBR Rookie of the Year (1995) and a World Finals Event winner (2002), and earlier this year was inducted into the PBR Ring of Honor. Hart is sixth on the list of all-time PBR money earners, and set the original record for most consecutive events attended (197 over 9 years). Known for his candid opinions and wry sense of humor, J-Dub now serves as a television commentator.

I think the injuries – the shoulder and the elbow – are going to be the big question mark for him.” Cody Lambert: “Kody’s strong and fit, and has ridden well all year. He does things technically correct and doesn’t get too excited about a win or a loss. The only weakness I see is that he has an injured riding arm. It started out with a serious ligament injury to his elbow in Omaha and now it seems like it could be his shoulder and his elbow.”

He’s tough enough to pull it out, but what a tough time it is to have a limb going bad on you right now. He seems mentally strong enough and determined, above all, to make it work.”

2. J.b. He was so talented and so physically and mentally tough, he was right up there at the top even though he did some things I didn’t think he should. This year I’ve seen J.B. really mature and he’s more focused on winning than he was in the past.” J.W. Hart: “I wonder if he’s going to crack just a little bit under the pressure the way he has the last couple of years. Do I think he will? I think he’s got the best shot he’s ever had. Not just because it’s as close of a run as he’s ever had, but I think he’s more mentally prepared. It’s going to be real fun to see if he can hold it together when we get to Las Vegas.”

By his standards it hasn’t been that great of a year. By any other bull riders’ standards this would be a career year. He’s a dangerous man to have following you if you’re trying to win the gold buckle.” J.W. Hart: “He knows what it takes. He’s been there more than anybody. He has more experience at it and he’s the only one in this race this year who has the experience and came out the winner. When it all boils down to it, I think, he may be the guy to beat, at the end of the day.”

He could be one to contend for a World Finals (event) title.”

bones I think that the reigning World Champion, Bones, is definitely in the running again. J.B. Mauney is the only man in the PBR to ever ride Bones. He rode him at the match-up in Oklahoma City for 93.5. Bones was definitely the best bull last year.

There were a few days where we were wondering if Chicken might be losing it. Then we realized the problem was that the gateman wasn’t opening the gate fast enough for him. He’s such a big bull and he had him bending so close to the chutes that he wouldn’t have time to spin. Since we’ve got him opening the gate faster, he gets out into the arena farther and hasn’t had an off day since. He looks just as good as he has ever been.

Voodoo Child is a two- time champion in the PRCA. This year he has bucked exclusively in the PBR and he’s as tough as they get. No one has ridden him this year, and the one time he was ridden in the PBR it was by Justin McBride. Everybody else has been bucked off. He still looks like he has what it takes and can get the job done, but I haven’t heard as many guys talking about him as I have some of these other bulls. But Voodoo Child is definitely as tough as any of them.

Big Tex is a way better bull than I thought he was. I didn’t think there was a chance I’d be talking about Big Tex this way a year ago. He’s so good he could win the whole thing. When they had the matchup between Bones and Big Tex, I think it could have gone either way - judging score wise. But Mike Lee got bucked off Bones so fast that you couldn’t see what he was going to do. But the shocking thing to me about that match was that they were matching Bones against Big Tex. Because, at the time, I didn’t think Big Tex deserved to be there. He was a relative unknown at the time and hadn’t proven himself. Bones was the World Champion and Big Tex hadn’t done anything. He was an unknown bull, but now he’s in the category of World Champion contender in my mind.
TRoubaDouR They’ve ridden him quite a few times, but he looks great. Troubadour probably doesn’t belong on this list of rank bulls, but as a great bull he deserves to be alongside the best of them. He does his job every time and always bucks harder at 8 seconds than he is at 4 - and he is plenty tough at 4 seconds. He has such perfect timing that the best bull riders in the world love to get on him.

Spit Fire is big and strong and the bull riders don’t really like to draw him. They can win on him, but he is a little dangerous because of his bucking style. As big as he is, he has to swing his head back and forth to get momentum when he’s spinning. He’s not big like Chicken on a Chain where he is tall and has long legs; he’s a shorter, thicker bull. For as heavy as he, is he’s not that tall. To get around as fast as he wants to spin, he has to swing his head from left to right to gain momentum and get faster as he goes. He also hits with his front legs stiff and likes to back up when he’s spinning, and this tilts the rider forward. So when they come off, if they are in the wrong place, his horn will hit them and he’s got pretty big horns. He knocked out Matt Bohon in San Antonio breaking his jaw - and then he stepped on him and broke his shoulder blade when Matt was going down. He’s not trying to hurt people because he’s not that mean; it is his bucking style that makes him dangerous.

Uncle Buck is really strong. He’s not that big of a bull if you look at him in the pens, but watch him buck and you’ d think he was a giant. Sometimes he has problems clearing the chute. He wants to turn back to the right so fast that sometimes he doesn’t always leave himself the space to do it. When he clears the chute with enough room to spin to the right, he kicks so high that he has to take an extra step with his front feet to keep from tipping over. Add a hard corner to the right to that, and that makes him so hard to ride that only Guilherme Marchi has been able to do it. Teague Bucking Bulls, LLC 4 1,425 lbs. The rider hits the dirt like a sack of wet concrete. The bull feels it. Turns. Searches for The Man—the small, two-legged thing who insulted his dignity. Sees him. The Man is hurt. Slow. He charges. From nowhere, two human streaks flash by his wild eyes. Their names are Joe Baumgartner and Shorty Gorham, and this is their job. They’ve drawn his attention. He turns to chase them, forgetting about The Man on the ground. Frank Newsom comes in from another direction and the bull turns to him. The rider is up. Limps to the gate. Survives. The Dickies DuraBullfighters are the guardian angels of the PBR. They spend 6-9 hours every weekend keeping the top 45 bull riders in the world alive. On a good day, they’ll simply need to distract the bulls long enough to get the rider to safety. But when hang-ups happen, they’re leaping in to free the tangled hand. They’ve been known to shield
downed riders with their own bodies. “I think the bullfighters save my butt more than I even realize,” says PBR rider Kody Lostroh. “Bull riding would end pretty quickly without them,” adds Wiley Petersen. The bullfighter’s uniform has changed over the years. The oversized clothing which once lent itself to the “clown” role has evolved into a loose-fitting jersey and shorts, which allow for maximum movement. The size of the garments serves another purpose: it makes the bullfighter a bigger target. In the words of Frank Newsom, “The bull might think he’s got you, when he’s just got your shorts.” The vest is notably different from those worn by the cowboys. For one thing, since the vest is worn under the outer clothing, fashion plays no part. Another difference is that the bullfighter’s vest features hard plastic outer shells on the front and back, while the rider’s does not. Both types of vests feature break-away construction in the event of a hooking.

four judges - Bill Pacheco, Lane Foltyn, Jim Bob Custer and Chuck Lambert - have been chosen by the riders of the PBR to officiate the 2008 Built Ford Tough World Finals. It is not an easy job. From four different perspectives, they’ll be asking: How hard is the bull to ride? How high does he get in the air on the front end? Does he kick every jump? How high? How many revolutions does he spin? Does he have direction change? How well does the rider handle the bull? Is he in control? Does he spur the bull? And they’ll have just 8 seconds to answer those questions.

The higher the hind legs and the more vertical the body angle, the higher the score. Spin is the speed at which a bull is rotating or moving laterally. A bull is judged not only on how quickly he spins, but the number of jumps it takes to make those rotations. A bull that can go 360 degrees in just two jumps will receive more points than a bull who needs four. Intensity is a measurement of the effort of the animal athlete. Just as a champion cowboy must have heart, so must a champion bull. A bull will have a high score for Degree of Difficulty automatically if he performs well in the buck, kick and spin categories. Other elements that may add to difficulty include drop, direction change and belly roll. Some bulls are harder to ride than others, and the judges award them with higher scores.

A cowboy is judged on his ability to match the bull’s moves, stay in control of the ride and his form. A bull rider typically wants his hips squared atop the bull and to remain as vertical as possible. A cowboy hangs on with his riding hand; his free hand must not touch anything or he will be disqualified. If he does everything perfectly he could score as high as 50 points. A cowboy will spur to show the judges the amount of control he has and to draw attention to his legwork. A great cowboy can make a difficult bull look easy to ride, while a less-skilled athlete can make a lesser bull look very hard to ride. The judges understand the difference. While it may be exciting to see a cowboy barely hanging onto a bull at a precarious angle at the 8-second mark, that lack of control is going to cost him points. Half the score the cowboy receives is based on the bull’s performance. Judges score bulls on a scale on 1 to 50, with a 50 being a “perfect” bull. PBR judges are watching for several elements of a bull’s performance: Buck, Spin, Kick, Intensity and Degree of Difficulty. Buck is the height a bull achieves with his front legs and
spIn
equIpMenT Invented by PBR Livestock Director Cody Lambert, the protective vest the cowboy wears absorbs shock and dissipates blows to the body, helping prevent injuries to the internal organs. Made of leather and thick foam, the vest is surprisingly lightweight, and is built to tear away in the event of a hooking.
Leather chaps protect the cowboy’s legs from both the bull and the unforgiving steel chutes. Custom-made and worth up to several thousand dollars, each rider has chaps with his own unique colors, designs and sponsor logos on them. The fringe on the sides — a traditional decorative accent — helps the rider bring the judges’ attention his legwork.
PB R W OR LD FINA LS 2 0 09
pbR 101 equIpMenT (cont.) The PBR leaves the choice of headwear up to the individual rider. Many choose to wear only a cowboy hat out of a sense of tradition, or because they feel helmets interfere with balance and vision. Often, cowboys will wear a helmet and/ or mask after a particularly nasty face or head injury. The helmet is similar to those worn in hockey, with some adaptations.
Spurs help the rider maintain his balance by giving him added grip with his feet. Bull riding spurs have dull rowels (wheels) that are loosely locked into place — unlike a horse, a bull has loose skin that has a degree of “roll” to it. The spurs do not cut a bull’s hide, which is seven times thicker than human skin. The bull rope is wrapped around the bull’s chest, directly behind his front legs. Custom-made from nylon or grass, the flat rope has a leather handle braided into it that the cowboy grips. The tail of the rope then passes through the palm, behind the hand, and back through the palm. The metal bell on the bottom of the rope serves as a weight which helps the rope to fall off once the rider has released it.
Rosin is a sticky substance that provides extra grip. It comes in powder and rock form. You’ll often see cowboys rubbing it into their ropes before riding.
A single glove protects the riding hand from the intense pressure and friction of the bull rope during the ride.
The flank strap is positioned around a bull’s flank, in front of his hips. It is designed to give him a sense of timing when he bucks. A bull without a flank strap could lose his rhythm, and his bucking will become very unorthodox. The flank strap does not irritate the animal’s genitals in any way. Bulls, like people, aren’t very enthusiastic about moving around if their sex organs are in pain. And with breeders paying as much as $5,000 a straw (vial) for genetic material, it would make no sense for a stock contractor to risk the reproductive health of his animal.
scoRInG The woRlD fInals Points at the Finals are awarded just as they are at regular-season events: Riders receive a score for each ride, a bonus for placing in the Top 10 of each round, and another bonus for placing in the Top 10 of the event as a whole (the “average” or “aggregate”). The difference is that there are more bonus points available in Las Vegas – a lot more. Theoretically, a perfect performance could net 6,500 points. The closest to perfect anyone’s ever come was Mike Lee, who earned 4,821.75 at the 2004 World Finals.

For decades, one thing has been just as integral to Western lifestyle events as the dirt itself – the sponsorship of Copenhagen Bull Riding. Since 1996, the company has been involved as a national sponsor of the Professional Bull Riders. Copenhagen Bull Riding celebrates the cowboy way of life and the Western spirit with multiple PBR sponsorship components, including a title sponsorship of both the Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenger Tour and the 90-Point Club; sponsorship of official PBR After Party events, and sponsorship of bull riders J.B. Mauney and Chris Shivers. The Copenhagen Bull Riding Tour features rising PBR stars competing at 35 events held across the United States, culminating with a tour finals event Nov. 20-22 in Atlanta. The company annually contributes to the prize money for the Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenger Tour Finals — in 2008, that included half a million dollars for the winner alone. Copenhagen Bull Riding is pleased to be a part of the continued growth of the PBR, and we look forward to bull riding’s bright future.

During the season, each PBR contestant who scores 90 points or more at a Built Ford Tough Series event will proportionately share $90,000 in bonus money. This bonus is distributed upon the conclusion of the PBR World Finals. The portion of the bonus money each contestant receives is based on the number of 90-point or higher rides he has for the year. In addition, for each 90-point ride that a stock contractor’s bull makes, the stock contractor receives $1,000 courtesy of two sponsors — $500 from Copenhagen and $500 from B&W Hitches.

Enterprise is proud to once again celebrate an exciting season as the Official Rent-A-Car of the PBR. Since the relationship began in 2003, Enterprise has been proud to support the PBR in a variety of ways including the Enterprise RIDE WITH THE BEST® challenge and title sponsorship of The Enterprise Tour. The 2009 edition of TEAM ENTERPRISE included some of the PBR’s best riders including Kody Lostroh, Renato Nunes and Brian Canter, three legends of the sport in Michael Gaffney, JW Hart and Tater Porter and one world renowned, entertaining barrelman in Flint Rasmussen. Today, Enterprise is the largest rental car company in the United States, with more than 6,000 locations. So the next time you need to rent a car, truck or van, please contact Enterprise, the Official Rent-ACar of the PBR. Visit us at enteprise.com or call 1-800 rent-a-car.
enTeRpRIse RIDe wITh The besT® For six years, the Enterprise RIDE WITH THE BEST® challenge has been an institution on the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series. The rules are simple, but the ride won’t be. It’s bull rider versus bull in a fight to the finish. If the previous long-round winner can stay on the bull he’s drawn for 8 seconds, he wins $5,000. If he can’t, the bull takes home the prize. Be it man or beast, winner takes all.

offIcIal pbR sponsoRs Natural talent plays a big part when the chute gate swings open. But so does the right equipment, and so does practice…year after year after year. Because a Daisy airgun is often a person’s introduction to shooting, it’s only appropriate that we support the PBR Rookies with the Daisy PBR Rookie of the Year Award. For over 120 years, Daisy has been making airguns. We like to think practice makes perfect. Take Pride. It’s a Daisy.

The Toughest Sport on Earth has an equally tough tire partner. Cooper Tires has taken center stage at every BFTS event this year, and will continue to be the Official Tire of the PBR next season. At Cooper, when a fraction of a second really matters, you can count on Cooper Tires to make a difference. When a fraction of a second really counts at PBR, bull riding is at its best.
Montana Tractors is proud to serve as the Official Tractor of the PBR. We look forward to our relationship with the PBR as a time to connect with people who have a passion for their lives, whether it is in the bull ring or riding one of our Montana Tractors. Montana Tractor owners are a special breed of people who have chosen a more rugged outdoor life, full of fresh air, hard work and the simple joys. We build our tractors with the quality craftsmanship our customers expect, and we combine that with a new breed of design our customers deserve.
