CASE STATEMENT CAMPAIGN

-St. Catherine of Siena

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

High schools are living organisms, always evolving to meet the varying needs of students and the ever-changing demands of current educational standards. From its inception St. Pius X High School has sought to meet the needs of its school community—originally mostly the children of Italian, Czech, and Polish heritage of the near Northwest side of Houston; today, a geographically diverse student population which also embodies diversity in cultures, learning styles, and socio-economics. Through more than six decades, our mission has been constant: to educate young men and women to be what they should be and set the world ablaze in the Dominican tradition. Today, St. Pius X High School must embrace the first words of St. Catherine’s challenge: to be what we should be. To remain the premier coed Catholic high school in Houston, we must meet the expectations of a 21st century college preparatory school. In order that students be prepared to meet the rigors of today’s college curriculum, they need not only fundamentals of science and technology but also the challenges and experimentation that can only be gained in modern, well-equipped classrooms and labs. To continue to attract highly-qualified and talented faculty, we must provide teaching environments which compel students to perform at their best. To fulfill our commitment to educational diversity, we must continue to grow our Learning for Success program by providing additional space for testing and program development.

The Set the World Ablaze campaign will enable St. Pius X High School to be what we should be in this, our sixth decade. The undertaking is the most ambitious in the history of the School, a campaign not only to create the learning environments in science and technology that our students deserve, but also to expand our Learning Center as part of our continued commitment to diversity. Our success will rely on the financial endorsement and generosity of the leaders of our community As we strive to be what we should be, will you partner with us to Set the World Ablaze? In Veritas, Donna M. Pollard, O.P. Head of School

PRIORITIES AND CASE STATEMENTS Throughout its history St. Pius X High School has been acclaimed for its athletic and fine arts programs. Over the last two decades, the School has also earned recognition for offering innovative programs to its diverse student body in order to provide the opportunity for academic and personal excellence. Midway through our sixth decade, we continue to address the challenge to be who we should be—in our commitment to our students, their parents, our alumni, our faculty/staff, and our larger community. To be what we should be, as the premier Catholic coed high school in Houston, our students must be prepared for the demanding curriculum found in 21st century colleges and universities. And, as one of the few private college preparatory schools in the Houston area that accepts students with learning differences from wide-ranging socio-economic backgrounds, we must continue to fulfill our commitment to educational diversity.

THE NEW SCIENCE BUILDING Preparing our students for 21st century colleges and universities Attracting talented and qualified faculty The New Science Building will replace the aging science classroom facilities of St. Pius X High School and will house two levels of multi-purpose science laboratory/lecture rooms and meeting space. The design elements of the building will marry construction materials to its use, as contemporary products such as striated metal reflect strands of DNA, and sleek metal panels convey cutting-edge technology. Within the seven flexible, spacious state-of-the-art science laboratory/lecture rooms, students will both experiment at lab workstations and study course work in a classroom lecture setting—all in the same space. The lab/lecture rooms will be connected by shared storage/preparation areas. The 24,000 square foot facility will feature equally advanced technology and also house an additional large classroom/meeting area, as well as two conference rooms/classrooms. This new learning environment, which simulates that found in new construction on college and university campuses, will equip our students for their higher education and attract and retain accomplished teaching professionals. New Science Building Cost………..$4,500,000

PEOPLE MAY ASK WHY—why should I give to St. Pius X now? The children in our elementary and middle schools will soon be walking the halls of St. Pius X. I could not think of a better investment than in the future of our School. St. Pius X created a legacy of caring for the Babin family. Thanks to the nurturing, competent faculty and staff, Matthew ‘97 is a successful entrepreneur, loving husband, and wonderful father, and Patrick ‘01 is an attorney and teaching CCE to elementary school students.”
