inFluenced by // Jeanette Ingberman, Co-Founder and Director of the NYC alternative space, Exit Art. I worked for Jeanette for five years, starting a year after I first moved to New York City. Exit Art was really a crazy place, one of the last old-school alternative art spaces and it reflected both the positive and negative connotations of “alternative.” Jeanette championed an incredible array of artists and taught me that if you are passionate about what you are doing and truly believe in it, you will always find someone to help you actualize your cause.
Future Plans // I’ve been researching the possibility of presenting a retrospective of the artist Gretchen Bender for over two years and I hope to make that exhibition a reality within the next year or two. I am also working on a project with the artist Matthew Day Jackson for a different kind of exhibition format dealing with the recurring compulsion towards the figurative in contemporary art. Artists are such amazing beings—in the face of so much adversity, they continue to create even if they don’t know the meaning or direction of their making or whether it will be a success or failure. I find inspiration in that every day.

influenced By // My father. He made it clear to me that you must love what you do. We spend so much time working— we’d better like, if not love, what we do. For me, being creative in business is what I love, and I’ve already tried to do new things at work, or outside work, that could eventually become part of my job. I remember my father venturing into his study after dinner; working into the wee hours of the night, writing his books (on the psychology of teenagers), and talking about his work with so much passion. He wanted to make his own unique mark on his field. He has, and it’s a daily inspiration.
futuRe plans // With Sofar Sounds we want to enable the most talented new musicians to get a global audience overnight because we can expose what they do to a live and online audience in multiple countries and continents. I want our brand to stand for respect for the music/musician, innovation, and most of all, a good magic evening with new friends in a secret house location. I’m focused on this at the moment, but always happy to meet with others who share similar dreams to do what they love and make a career out of it. It’s good for them and for the world.

InfLuenced By // Two people have influenced my current occupation. Tinker Hatfield, the footwear designer who has designed classic and timeless sneakers for the greatest basketball player ever: Michael Jordan. I was always in complete awe at how he designed a shoe that the greatest athlete trusted, which was then worn by so many fans. The thought of that happening from an idea really captured me and I wanted to know how I could do something similar but in my own way. The other influence is my father; a first generation immigrant from Panama who didn’t have a pair of his own shoes until he was 12 years old. Now I design and make shoes. He made it possible.
future //
We plan on taking Android Homme to the next level with multiple retail store rollouts, international distribution,
and the introduction of Android Femme. We are making Android Homme and Android Femme into globally recognized, influential brands. We are a futurist company so we don’t see any limitations. We only see possibility.
