FOR YEARS, I HAVE DABBLED IN SHOPPING AT ANTIQUE STORES, consignment shops and full-service refurbish design studios (the 21st-century’s modern answer to vintage-meets-rehab) it started while working at a magazine and it was fashionable to be eco-minded. For myself and many of 20-something friends, it was the reduced cost that made vintage shopping appealing, but owning a one-ofa-kind statement piece was a bonus. Over the years my knowledge has evolved with education through upholstery classes and experimenting with eco-friendly painting and furniture restoration. It has become a natural part of my design process. This issue features a diverse group of people who are earth-friendly and sociallyconscious for an array of reasons. For those of us who flirt with the idea of greenliving, it is our reminder to be mindful of our environment and how we treat it.

N
icole and Taylor Stark are as obsessed with quality, functionality and charm as they are eager for a challenge. So, when a friend decided to list his 1940s bungalow in the highly coveted M Streets neighborhood in East Dallas, the couple was quick to seize the opportunity. “We loved it from the start,” Nicole says. “What the house lacked in modern amenities it made up for in character.” No couple was better equipped to upgrade this cottage to a fitting home. Taylor’s background and experience at his family’s local design and build firm and Nicole’s passion for beautiful, livable interiors allowed them to oversee every detail of the full-scale renovation. “Because the work was so extensive, the most challenging part of the process was the demolition,” Taylor says. “Once we had a blank slate; however, we were able to really see our plans begin to take shape

and our vision come to life.” The Starks reconfigured the once-cramped kitchen into a room filled with natural light. The likable space—complete with a farmhouse sink, Shaker-style cabinets, stainless steel appliances, an oversized butcher block island, and white marble countertops—is perfectly situated for both casual entertaining and culinary adventures. The home maintains its character with original doors and hardware. The couple added recessed lighting and molding and renovated both bathrooms. They also transformed a dated, enclosed porch into a warm sunroom that now serves as a favored home office. “We added windows and hardwood floors to the space but kept the original tongue and groove ceiling,” Nicole says, “and now, the sunroom is one of our favorite spots in the house.” An oversized lot made modern conveniences possible on the property. The space is large enough to accommodate outdoor entertaining areas as well as a new, two-car detached garage that features custom built-in cabinetry and exterior details that seamlessly blend the new structure with the original style of the house. “I love older homes,” Taylor says. “And I love improving them for today’s lifestyle while maintaining the character qualities that make them unique.”

auren and Breck Woolsey share an affection for one-of-a-kind pieces, “we love the hunt,” Lauren says. A determination that gratefully led them to each other—the couple first met at Again and Again, a Dallas spot noted for vintage furniture and old-to-new makeovers. Since they said, “I do,” their 1943 Stevens Park bungalow, near the Bishop Arts District has received assiduous attention.“We gutted everything,” says Breck, an awardwinning interior designer and creator of his own furniture line, Collective III (exclusively sold at Mecox). “From the floors and windows to the kitchen and bathrooms, every inch of the house has received a facelift.” For the Woolseys, the transformation of their home was destined for stunning results as much as every detail of the process was sure to be carefully considered. “When you’re both in the design world, everyone has an opinion, which is a great thing even though decisions are inevitably reached
slowly,” Lauren says smiling. Working in client development for a global lighting firm based in Charleston, South Carolina, Lauren’s affection for gorgeous lighting (from antique and family heirloom to innovative new fixtures) can be found throughout the house, as well as her tendency toward interiors that marry traditional, clean, feminine styles. “We sit on everything, literally and figuratively,” Breck says, whose taste veers to modern, masculine looks. “We weigh our options to make the best choice for both of us.” A myriad of styles and pieces in the home create an unexpected—yet exemplary—assembly in each room that has been sourced from around the country or bespoke especially for them. Breck and Lauren’s classically inspired interiors in shades of blue, lavender, and white feature cool, clean contemporary accents mixed with pieces from notable design periods. The home shows off a Louis XV sideboard and an eye-catching metal chandelier from the Brutalist movement of the 1960s by designer Tom Greene, both in the dining room. “Our rooms are constantly evolving,” says Breck. “Our mantra is to never buy anything we don’t absolutely love, so we’re willing to wait.”
BRECKINRIDGE TAYLOR: Breck founded Breckinridge Taylor, his boutique-style interior design firm, in 2011. He is well known around the country and highly sought-after for his ability to blend traditional styles with modern, 20th-century sensibilities, resulting in understated, elegant spaces.

’J Perkison is an architect and her husband, Brannon, a builder, were living in the tight-knit neighborhood of East Dallas when a neighbor told them about a possible “project home” a few streets over. The home, named “Pecan Tree” (evident by the walnut and pecan trees that shade it) was a 1955 midcentury modern in need of a lot of love and a refresh. After peeling back the layers of the home and discovering years of neglect, the Perkisons decided to gut the home down to the studs. D’J, lead architect of Studio Perk, wanted to maintain the integrity of the original design and create a family space that was eco-friendly—down to the refurbished furniture left by the original owners. Taking on the difficult task of an eco-friendly home is not for the faint of heart. Across the design process they took risk with material and made meticulous design choices. “This was a chance for me to experiment and try different things,” D’J says. Reused light fixtures, salvaged glass and installed white-oak flooring reclaimed from a 100-year old barn support the spirit of green-building. Sometimes ecochoices made a visual statement as well such as the wood clad drop-down ceiling that holds the HVAC in attic space and the impressive bar in the kitchen,

fabricated with the paper product, Richlite. Now that construction is complete, the light-filled home appears deceptively larger than its 1,727 square-foot-size. The Perkisons’ work, varies from raising the roof to adding windows and integrating visible and non-visible storage through a wall of book shelves, art nooks or exterior storage (not a garage, as it may appear to the passerby). Whilst design decisions served a function, they frequently coincide with thoughtfulness for the family and the environment, including a screened-in porch patio that connects the home to the outdoors and little details such as a front parking area for bikes, the stock tank herb garden and steel cattle tanks that function as a sandbox where play can be monitored from the kitchen. From the beginning, the Perkison family made a decision to build green and the results have paid off. Upon completion of the renovation they were able to certify the home as LEED Gold. “Eco-friendliness and sustainability are core to both our personal and professional values,” Brannon says. “We don’t just design and build it, we live it as well.” To learn more about Green Building go to www.usgbc.org. aula Minnis, first related to her Preston Hollow bungalow because of its connection to the outdoors. “The main family room has a wall of windows facing the backyard and pool area, which is like an oasis, Minnis says. “You don’t really feel like you’re in Dallas, but more like you’ve escaped to a little hacienda in Mexico.” The same is true for her outdoor room, which is Minnis’ favorite place to retreat. The founder of GAIA Empowered Women says her outdoor refuge embodies her love for travel, approachable style and social conscience. Memories and reminders are displayed throughout. Kuba throw pillows bought during her honeymoon in Africa, a Tuareg rug from Morocco and pillows sewn by refugee women she employs. Atmosphere is important for Minnis. “I definitely feel that our physical surroundings influence our happiness, so comfort is always top priority. And lighting. I must have good lighting,” she says. In spite of being a personal haven, the room still allows Minnis to connect with her family. “I love heading out there after work with a glass of wine and a magazine while watching the kids play on the slide and sandbox right outside. And if I’m able to finish the entire NY Times curled up on the porch on a Sunday, then it was a good day,” she says. 86
