«...let/s DO this!» a mail conversation

ANDREAS AHLM // Yo Mo, what/s up this weekend? Some boring golf event? I/m leavin/! :-)
The shooting turned out pretty nice I think. Golf matters, but so does style! Or what do you think?
MORITZ FREY // Well, I guess there is that other event we should show up… but to be honest, I/m not really keen of going there! Actually I don/t really see the point to cover it! What do you think?
M // Style is an essence of golf! But golf and travelling is definitely the best thing to do! I think we/re on a good way to give out the right message with our contemporary golfing magazine. Let/s get it done and get it out into the golf market of Switzerland.
A // Last week Morocco, next San Sebastian – I prefer to be abroad! What about you, work for the mag or work for chicks? M // I/d love to go for the girls but as it looks right now we/ve got to work on the upcoming magazine… remember next Monday we/ll be shooting the fashion story and you/d better be back from San Sebastian! But I know you love to travel as much as I do, and all these courses all over Europe are just simply amazing!
A // Damn, you/re right, we have to get the mag finished. New layout, loads of stories, I/m excited und ver y curious about the feedback. SanSeb was amazing – a vibrant town, good food and party, good surf and some great courses in the Basque countr y. We have to take that one on our bucket list as well!!
A //Yeah we should! But it/s hard to say if they are ready for us. However, swing is swing, style is style and passion is passion. And if you have the passion, ever ything else doesn/t matter! That kid in Peru – I have never seen a natural like him. You watch him play and you just want to give him the chance to live it to the max. I feel like that is our mission, spread the passion for the game to as many people as we can and infect them with the virus. Or as Kelly Slater said it «It/s like the mafia. Once you/re in – you/re in. There/s no getting out!» I don/t know if he meant golf or surf ;-) M // What else can I say!? I guess we explained pretty good what our mission with the Bunker/s Up! Magazine is! But remember to keep your head over the ball!

a square foot of grass
The story around the first public golf academy is definitely one of the most memorable in my short golfer life. Walking down the fairway that was marked with white colored rocks, with the two boys that had started golfing only a few months ago in this dry, barren surrounding 10
on an old airfield definitely felt special. Only few rules differ from the game on real grass: Inside the white rocks one is allowed to place the ball on the square foot of artificial grass that one carries along. Watching Andres swinging his club in one of the most elegant ways I have witnessed and hearing him explaining that he would love to play every day unless his parents would ban him because he damaged too many shoes, made me feel that we aren/t too far from giving everybody the chance to exercise this wonderful game. Seeing the boys walking ahead of me, polos stuck in the pants, bags lined up and carrying the grass squares in one hand, I knew that the world should know!

two Moroccan brothers leaping from one scissor blade to the other
I met Assiz randomly on the souk, a large Maroccan market, in Agadir – a middle age man with a humble but radiant expression on his face. He was interested in the honey we had bought, so we got into a conversation. My eye caught a glimpse of a golf club logo on his cap, so I asked him about it. His eyes caught fire and proudly he started telling all about his sons, Jamal and Karim, playing among the best juniors in the country. He absolutely wanted us to meet them and invited us to a tagine for dinner. A few days later we headed for the address he had given us with slight suspicion but very excited. Our surprise couldn/t be bigger:

a provisory hut with corrugated roof, a bed room, a tiny kitchen, a living room with no windows and finally an 8 headed family waiting for us. In the middle of the living room stood a set of clubs and along the walls medals and trophies. Assiz did not hesitate. A short prayer and then he cut straight through the throat of one of the cute rabbits the family owned. «You are special guests!» he said and two hours later his wife served an amazing tagine that everybody gathered around and ate from with their hands. We slept on the floor and on the next day I set up for a first game with Jamal and Karim.

«Pressure is playing for ten dollars when you don/t have a dime in your pocket.»

Today, two years later, we set up again for Morocco. This time to get some good footage for the new Bunker/s Up issue. Jamal and Karim are both playing in the national team in the meantime. We meet Karim in Marrakesh in the middle of the main piazza, the Jemaa el-Fnaa, one of the maddest melting pots in the world, where snake charmers meet story-tellers, gamblers, beggars and grapevine snails are among the delicacy. Hundreds of tents and trailers feed the consumption lust of people from all over the world till late at night, only to be all gone in the morning before being rebuilt again towards afternoon. Same madness every day. Karim seems tired but relaxed from last week/s trainings camp with the national team – a weird picture as he walks over the Arabic market with his golf clubs on the back. He – the kid we first met in the simple shelter – sure enjoys our company with a shisha, a few drinks and a visit to the posh finest nightclub in
Marrakech. He doesn/t leave an opportunity to let the cyber world know what he is up to. Remarkable how he already manages to switch between the worlds – home where his father struggles every day to come up with food and money for the children/s education and the luxury world on the golf clubs with expensive cars, watches and royalty.
After four hours of sleep we head to Samanah Golf, a prime Golf destination in Marrakesh, the brothers favorite in the country. Karim is a gambler, the guy who loves to play for money even though he doesn/t have any in his pocket. Just like Lee Trevino said:
«Pressure is playing for ten dollars when you don/t have a dime in your pocket.» Of course I won/t miss a match of golf. Karim is tired and out of focus. To my surprise I/m three up after six holes. Karim laughs at me with an irritating selfconfidence: «After nine we will be even, I swear!» Three holes and two birdies later his prophecy comes true. He kisses his putter: «This one is money!» Karim has the self-evidence of a champion. He believes to be the Moroccan Tiger Woods, at least that is the impression he gives you. Time will prove whether his selfesteem serves good or bad. I give my best in the battle, but arriving on the 17th Karim claims the victory with another birdy. I give him the money with joy, a little bit of disappointment though as Karim would have cooked dinner for us if I had beaten him. «You know, on the course we are enemies, no laughter and friendly jokes, no matter if you play your fiercest competitor, your brother or the press», he sais with a large grin.

A two-hour drive takes us to Agadir and the Allali family/s home that hasn/t changed. Jamal is already waiting and opens the door to the yard. «Welcome to the farm!» he shouts out with a big smile. As every time the whole family awaits us with hugs and kisses. The Allalis openheartedness and kindness and their loving colloquial among each other touches me every time I arrive here. The fact that everybody is sleeping in the same room and that everyone must contribute for the well seems to bind them even more. Jamal picks up his little sister Aziza, kisses her head and fools around with her. He is busy finishing school, that/s why golf is only second priority at the moment. His father Assis wants it that way for a good reason. Education is a big topic for Assis. He wants his
children in half private school since class sizes in the public ones are up to 60 pupils. As he can only afford three kids in school at a time they have to teach each other. Overwhelmed they accept the used laptop we have for them. The old one was already missing keys on our last visit.
Jamal takes the next morning off for the photo on his favorite golf course in Agadir, «L/ocean». He is the thankful and modest guy, the oldest of the
kids and has to manage many responsibilities. «Another week», he says, «and I/m gonna be finished!» For the summer he has three months planned in France with a tough tournament schedule. It/s a privately sponsored trip – some lady that wants to help him on the path. But the biggest chance to get out there, he says, is to find a golf college in the first world. That is his biggest dream. And then prove it to everybody... «I/m gonna be playing on the tour, I will!» The two brothers couldn/t be more different. «Jamal is still better than me» Karim says. But I have two years to go. He smiles. To have their fiercest competitor in the family seems to push them to new heights. At the same time they quarrel and battle, they haven/t lost the brotherly loving, caring and pride.

Cyprus text / Andreas Ahlm
Mythological heavyweight lies on the grounds of southern Cyprus: a beautiful piece of land of golden rocks and deep blue water where Aphrodite, the goddess of love and lust, chose to step out of the water and let her beauty attract our senses and distract us from our daily duty. The tales talk about Kronos and how he cut 22
off his father Uranus/s Phallus on the advice of his mother Gaia, the goddess of Earth. She had become sick of her husband – and son/s – immoral usage of his Phallus. Where Uranus/s genital fell in to Cypriot Ocean Aphrodite arose from the foam caused by the mixture of sperm, blood and the salty water. Aphrodite/s spirit still shines in the warm hearts of the Cypriots: they overwhelm us with hospitability and kindness. Honestly, I have rarely witnessed a more genuine and laughter towards strangers. It is in midst of this Mediterranean terrain of valleys, vineyards and olive trees man has created a still hidden pearl among golfing destinations: four courses of totally different character that have the quality to attract the travel golfer as well as the top golfer who is looking for a new challenge.

As far as to write about the Bunker/s Up journalist team, it had a tough schedule to fulfil – nothing with tanning at the pool and investigating bikini girls. Yet how about starting the trip in a pub watching the final day of the US Masters, smoking cigars and drowning the night in whiskey sours and hoping for the Amen corner? Knowing Spieth would be struggling and Bubba be too solid may have saved a few hours of sleep. But how could one know?

Apart from golf the region offers rich culture reaching from splendid food, to wine tasting on organic family driven vineyards, to clubbing in Pafos – the capital of the region. All of this is being experienced with the still authentic Cypriot Mediterranean touch that the locals more than happily share. Let us hope that Cyprus doesn/t loose its soul to only money driven mass tourism.

However, Karma was once again on our side to help getting the job done: seeking souls find seeking souls: Stelios Patsalides, Vice President of the Cypriot golf federation, turned up at the bar and soon he and his close friend Angelos receive us on the organic family driven winery Tsangarides – one among the 70 small quality vineyards on the island. Investments ten years ago enable the farmers to cease their fruits now. «A wine tastes as good as the company you share it with is» says Angelos candidly and disappears in the cellular to bring his favorite bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from 2005. We spend an unforgettable evening in the tavern – a must for every wine lover! «In vino veritas» is an ancient wisdom that Dionysos, the god of wine, taught the people already 2000 years BC.
And there she stood: Aphrodite in person. Eirini Zinouli, Marketing and Sales director at Elea Golf Club. Breathtaking, charming and yet focused on her job to bring Elea Golf on the world golf map. Eirini connected us with Chris Hopkins to master our last task: finding Aphrodite walking out of the water and bringing the beauty of golf to us.
Chris, ancient owner of nine radio stations in the UK, explains why life is much more worth living on Cyprus than in the UK. «I used to finish work on Friday, get up on Saturday for the weekly radio show, then straight to the pub only to start it all over on Monday again!» The wheel had spun too long and he decided to become photographer on the sunny island giving Cyprus a face and play as much golf as he could. The beautiful Natalie in company of Chris, the Aphrodite Rocks in the evening sun and a couple of beers made the opening shot for the story a matter of form.

Aphrodite Hills the resor t
26
Luxury is not everyone/s business. Though hardly anybody will say no to it. Aphrodite Hills is the first resort of its kind in Cyprus. Anything is thought of for a golfer, who wants just to golf, eat, drink and leave the stressful life behind for a few days: spa, pub, pool, a huge buffet with goodies three-times each day and a world class golf course in walking distance. Of course allinclusive luxury has its price. Yet Aphrodite Hills has alternatives in the means of apartments and villas along the course. A great affordable alternative for the one who wants to explore what great culture the region has to offer. How about renting a villa with your best golfing buddies and wake up each day with the most astonishing view over the ocean and the course and maybe jump into the pool for an early wake up call? And maybe finish the day in the sunset with a glass of whiskey and a smoke before heading to the Pafos nightlife‌

Ap h ro d i t e Hi ll s Go lf – It/s all about that hole No 8
28
Aphrodite Hills is one of these courses that don/t leave your mind after you/ve heard about them. There are those holes you do not want to fail on and if you do, you/ll have the urge to return until you succeed. Hole No. 8 is one of them. Hitting that second shot wedge to the pin, walking down the fairway and setting up for the birdy putt: a moment everything in the world loses importance. Stepping up for the Drive from the back-tees on No. 3 is another one: 230 meters carry over the canyon to reach the fairway – a moment of truth, whether you/ve been cheating yourself on your driving distances or whether all the workout during the winter finally is paying off. Take it or leave it – but you better believe it!

E l e a Go lf Co u r se – The olive tree, the smell of lavender and a hundred bunkers
Elea – olive tree in Cypriot – is the second course on the island and the first one to have the class to host larger amateur tournaments. An elite society around Nick Faldo from the rainy island developed the codex in and around the club in old british fashion. To measure distances in yards is one of the leftovers that remind the visitor of the old days. Meanwhile Elea has evolved to one of the leading sustainable courses in the area, where water savings have a high priority and all players are warmly welcome. Eirini is arguably the hottest golf manager on the planet. Respect for the man who is not distracted. Mo standing over his 3-foot-putt on the fourth green, looks up and says: «these highheel leather boots just killed me!» Of course he missed the putt. The large marcelled greens have the smoothest grass on the island. Many large strategically positioned bunkers are a joy for the golfer eye and make the course a real challenge. No wonder that this is the course most Pros want to come back to. And last but not least: don/t get caught up to deep in the game and put your nose for a deep breath in one of the many lavender bushes. There is a reason why lavender is used in natural medicine, solving stress and ner vous tensions.

Minthis Hills – The hills, the monaster y and the tavern
32 Minthis Hills is the oldest course in Cyprus. It lies 550 meters up in the hilly Mediterranean country. While it cannot challenge the sophisticated architectures of Ahprodite and Elea, Minthis Hill convinces with its charming, friendly and peaceful ambience. It will make every golfer/s day: the average golfer not having lost a ball all day if he makes it past no. 13, the island green, and the more advanced player with challenging tee-shots on the narrow hilly fairways. Highlight is for sure the elevated tee-shot on the 12th. A reachable Par 4 with a canyonlike snake valley along the left side. The 12th century monastery, carob and olive trees scattered all over the course, make the game here an unforgettable experience. It is one of these trees that made Mo/s golf
day even more unforgettable. A branch in the backswing, a missed ball and a belly full of anger made him pack his stuff and leave. Beckna and me found ourselves battling laughter till the last putt. Watch all of it on www.bunkersup.ch. Anger soon passed as Stelios Patsalides, the manager, invited us to a nearby wine tasting. The Tsangarides vineyard is a family driven business and Angelos the passionate driving force: great joy to listen to all his tales around wine. The Tsangarides vineyard is a must and if you are really lucky he will serve you a drop of his greatest wine, a price winning 2005 Cabernet.

Secret Valley
Secret Valley was the last course on our tight schedule. Another warm welcome in deep Scottish tongue by the Marshall makes our day start with a smile. This short, narrow and tricky course
is the newest creature on the island. Located in the valley just below Aphrodite Hills this course has a totally different character than the previous ones. Trees along the river and loads of water hazards give the visitor a welcoming escape from the heat during the summer. Just carefully place your steps when missing the fairway: the valley is also a popular escape for the local rattlesnakes. Secret Valley is a very strategic course where an iron of the tee can save a lot of strokes. The author/s favorite is the long Par 5 No. 9. A double dogleg where the tee-shot and second both have to be placed carefully to get a good chance for the green. The moment of the day once again by Moslinger:
first in his life chance on the last whole. The ball lips out and the remaining 3-footer as well. Beckna with a sheepish grin: who/s the eagles best friend!? Another beer and the catch of the day for lunch make another happy ending of the day – again, golf was the winner, as Beckna loves to claim. An experienced soul for sure knows.

It/s a wrap Let/s just reveal it: Cyprus is still a hidden pearl on the world golf map. Yet only a few, but wide ranged golf courses: from simple and charming to world class challenges. Ten more courses are being planned. Furthermore Cyprus offers a beautiful Mediterranean landscape with amazing beaches and a hilly backcountry. The authentic and picturesque villages leave no signs of mass tourism yet and offer an extraordinary food and wine culture. No wonder, as the fish on the table is the catch of the day, olive oil and grapes grow in the backyard and the whole island carries the odour of rosemary, thyme and lavender. Adding that Aphrodite left her traces will make every visit fulfilled: beautiful and charming people crowd the island. Their welcoming and outspoken spirit shines beyond their borders. Yes, it did not take us long to fall in love with the place. It is not self-evident that a bunch of freaks like us is being respected on and off the courses. Yet again karma brought us to the right people and places: an unforgettable evening in the Tsangarides vineyard with Angelos and Estelios that ended in a brotherly drop of exquisite Cabernet. Lovely lunches and dinners with the charming Ladies Eirini and Maro Kapezi just to give us a hint of Aphrodites heritage.
And least but not last an amazing set up along the beautiful coast with breathtaking golf holes and the sun setting smoothly in the ocean: the ideal place for the production of images that make the golfer/s heart bleed. Remains to spread the thanks to everyone making it another unforgettable trip: Thomas Bächler from Golf and Travel Agency in Switzerland, Aphrodite Hills Resort for splendid hospitality, Maro Kapezi from Greek golf tourism and the managers from all the golf resorts. We will give our best in spreading the word – our mission goes on. VIMEO CHANNEL vimeo.com/channels/cyprus

4 months / 4 continents / 4 golf stories text / Andreas Ahlm photography / Lena Steiner, Andreas Ahlm

The mind aching, the stomach cr ying and the heart bleeding is when time is ripe to pack your seven things and to put on the sevenleague boots for new adventures. Not only should the purpose of travel be pure fun. Touching hearts, a widened mind and inner growth are nice side effects that ever y journey brings within. No matter if you lie in bed for a month with stomach ache, the reef kiss of your second surf keeps you out of water for the next and in the third month your rented car is left with broken windows and none of your belongings – ever ything that doesn/t kill you makes you stronger. Here are four stories from four continents that inspired me. Four shades of golf, which have one thing in common – a great passion for the game.

America — delivering Pizza on the 17 most exclusive golf miles in the world
Sure, every golfoholic/s dream is to step onto the holy grass of «The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews». Strange since being humbled by wind, weather, barren grass and impossible, huge greens is not all that much fun. The Americans were the first to understand this and designed some of the heavy weights in golf course design on the Monterey peninsula. As Jack Nicklaus would say: «If I had only one more round to play, I would choose to play it at Pebble Beach. I/ve loved this course from the first time I saw it. It/s possibly the best in the world.» His words sat deep in the back of my brain as we steered towards the holy 17 miles a few hours south of San Francisco. A few hurdles were yet to be mastered: 40
Our unique Chevi campervan and its crew didn/t correspond to match the average client on the elite peninsula. «Are you delivering Pizza?» was the friendly greeting as we entered the gate. The Concours d/Elégance – the most renowned gathering among oldtimers – was held at this same weekend. To make clear to the staff that I had an important mission to fulfil for the most progressive golf magazine in the world, I had to tell them a pack of lies. Last but not least it would have been a shame to dent the lined up caroches along the fairway with slices from the tee.
As I was granted a tee time for the next day I discovered the aerified greens. I decided to crawfish and invest the $500 in more meaningful things. I booked a tee-time on the close-by Spyglass Hill Golf Course. The last one also being a heavyweight on the US PGA Tour, where it is ranked as the hardest course. Another quote by Jack Nicklaus turned out too true: «Golfers have a tendency to be very masochistic. They like to punish themselves for some reason. A lot of them like tough courses.»
I was assigned to two flight mates that were similarly megalomaniac as me. They challenged me into a game from the back-tees. Meanwhile the two former college mates, Hunter and Kyle, had in the meantime become seasoned Americans. Hunter was Head of Sales for a truck leasing company with a fleet of «less than 150/000 truck» and Kyle had become an engineer in a spaceship agency with few weeks under 60 hours of work. The only one amused was the caddy of the two friends: a former Pro who put everything on one card and never made it through qualifying school to the moneymakers. Fed up of playing, his best option was to carry the clubs of the wannabes and provide them with meaningless advice to strategic playing. As if the struggle we had against the course wasn/t enough, mist settled over the fields of Monterey, a phenomenon that appears on 200 days a year after midday on the peninsula. Nothing with bluebird and golden green shining grass as found in all the catalogues, that make millions of golfing hearts beat faster. However, a masochist withstands, he loves pain. The fog permeated playground transformed into an enchanted forest, where every single grass culm is designed to perfection: links golf at its best on the front nine, where the waves for the evening surf roll smoothly into the Spanish Bay in the background. The following nine holes lead through deep pinewoods where no even area can be found. There are days in a golfer/s life, when one has to dig deep into the pocket to access holy grass. Though golf nerds like me rather sleep in a camper van for two weeks with nothing but pasta and tomato sauce and camping in quarter streets in order to save up money. Others gamble away their holiday budget within an hour in Vegas. My flight companions struggled like myself. With my score of 89 shots I was even quite happy. Bitter only the insight, that Phil Mickelsons course record of 62 shots was more than a few hours of practice away.

New Zealand — the bleeding heart of a green keeper
Kiwis are very nice people and at first glance they appear to be quite similar to us. It is the second impression that makes you understand that they actually live on the other side of this globe. 42
That golf came down to this wonderful country is understandable, since the modern culture was built on strong British influence. That the golf codex would be a lot less complicated than in our latitudinal lines is also comprehensible as a lot of the immigrants from Europe were wailers, sealers and mariners. The author supposes that this mixture with the local settlers from Polynesian Islands known as Maoris and their «no f..k around» attitude made the classy game of golf pure again on the island. Beautiful landscape imposes breathtaking golf courses. Links courses can be found in every little cost town and not seldomly they are run on a very low budget. Smart to use sheep as green keepers on the fairways as they do two in one: feed themselves and cut the fairways to the pleasure of men. Of course the grass quality can be improved using machines, but it still does not take a lot of working force to make a high quality golf course as the story of Leon proves: Leon had worked as green keeper on several good clubs around the country. As former scratch player he knows the game to various extents. He had though become tired of his job and needed a break.
It was during this time he came by the southern end of the 90 miles beach in the very north of New Zealand and discovered the Kaitaia Golf Links. It stretches smoothly along the ocean and the dunes giving it the real links feel. It hurt his heart to see the course in a very bad condition. He decided to stay and make the course «what it is supposed to be». Within two years Leon and his assistant Arthur made the greens to some of the best on the island. Leon in his usual understating manner: «it just takes a little knowledge about grass. Don/t use fertilizer when it wants to grow by itself!» He masters course changes in the architecture by hand and his dream is to build another couple of holes along the ocean. The land carries all that beauty in itself. «Nature more or less designed the holes by itself, you just have to build them.» Of course Leon talked me into a money game. «It ain/t golf if it ain/t about the money!» Leon opened his can with bourbon and coke. It is that extra pressure that makes you hurt for real when you lose. We all want that to a certain extent. I agreed and we battled to the bitter end. Not rain, storm nor darkness could withhold us. I sunk a 5 meters for par on the 17th to keep my two shot lead and break Leon/s spirit. Lucky end and my mind was tempted to imagine the feeling walking down that 18th in Augusta.

Fiji — following Vijay Singh/s traces
Fiji is not primary known for it/s golfing culture, yet there is one outstanding man in the game that grew up right here: Vijay Singh. 2004 remains as one oft he greatest achievements in the history of the game. He won nine tournaments in the same year on the US PGA Tour and claimed the World No 1 title of Tiger. Vijays story is one of the more remarkable one/s. Carrying the reputation of a cheater still follows him to these days as well as struggling against prejudice towards the Indo-Fijian Hindus. Concerning his cheating it is still not clear if it was a trick played against him. Where better than in Fiji to find out more about the life of this remarkable golfer. There was very little that had come to my ear about Vijay/s background. It wasn/t until I stepped into a taxi from Nadi town with three drunken Kiwis. Surf was bad so we decided to play a round of golf instead. The taxi driver seemed a little curious about our golfing equipment and even more as I told him I was a pretty decent golfer and had been to all sorts of nice places. He was a solid handicap 4 senior, though back in the days, he explained, when he was battling against Vijay, those were the good days! Just like Vijay he had claimed the club title in the Nadi Airport Golf Club, a barren course wedged between the ocean and the airfield, proudly showing his name right next to Vijay/s on the champions board. They had grown up together next door. Vijay, his siblings and parents in one little room and the taxi driver – I forgot his name – and his family in one room. Together they would climb the fence to the golf course on the other side of the airport to hit balls. «Vijay had a talent from a different planet and no one worked as hard as him! He/d spend afternoons on his own on the course.
When he started winning he was so confident that he sold his prizes before the tournament.» Vijay/s father, a poor aircraft mechanic, taught them the basics. Having trouble to afford balls they made their own do with coconuts. At the age of 19 Vijay rebelled the will of his parents and went off to Australia to qualify for the Asian tour and only two years later he claimed the first victory in the Malaysian Open. The rest is a story about a path to the hall of fame of golf. Standing in front of the clubhouse it seems that time has stood still here for the last 50 years. The few visitors are mainly Kiwi and Aussie surfers that swing the clubs with bourbon and coke in one hand and rather aim at the landing planes on the nearby runway. The same did we and when some heavy rain hit us on the 7th hole, there were only two of us remaining in the game. The other two had lost all their balls. We decided to rather go for a game of pool in the clubhouse, where the floor was completely under water. The reception girl just laughed at us and brought us a few more bourbon and coke: «water comes, water goes!» Yet that aura of purity and love for the game hangs over Nadi Airport Golf Club – a story that has the calibre of «Tin Cup»! Vijay came back to Fiji many years later to give back a little to his citizen people. The result is a masterpiece in course design in the Natadola bay, easily the best course in the pacific. The ride takes you along the coral lagoon up to beautifully embedded holes in the hills. The nearby village has increased its gross national product by factors: kids walking along the course and yelling: «Pro Vs, Pro Vs!!!»

Peru — waiting for Godot
Chicken on stereoids serving the Peruvian hunger of three chicken per person and week, rapidly increasing wealth through copper mines and industrialized fishing creating greed and criminality, traffic chaos where the weak one better stays home, fenced ghost towns where the rich hardly dare to put their feet on the outside, cops gilding their teeth with bribe. Peru has challenges to master in order to make the next step towards welfare. Right there in the southern outskirts of Lima in this deserted, barren land a bumpy dirt road gave me an uncomfortable feeling whether this really was the right place. I had been looking for golf fields on Google Maps. This one was weird: the whole campus was brown except for one little green piece of land. My curiosity had taken overhand and finally at the end of the road I was able to perceive a sign: «Cruz de Hueso Golf Club» – Cross of bones Golf Club, odd. Driving into the parking lot I could already see about 40 kids swinging clubs, hopscotching and fooling around. There only grass area was filled with cones, hula hoop rings and a bunch of kids hitting balls from small artificial grass squares. A mid age man came walking towards me and laughing out: «we just don/t have water for more than one!» The man was Luis Villegra – director escuela de menores – the man behind the first public golf academy in Peru. «It/s a pilot project, the government wants to bring Peruvians to western schools through scholarships. In two years golf will be Olympic!» I was amazed.
«The kids have to learn all the skills, strength, balance, coordination and in the end, most important they need to have fun!» The academy started only 18 months ago and Luis is very proud of his two best pupils, Andres and Victor. Andres is 13 and has played Golf for a year and a half. He is easily the most talented kid I have witnessed. A natural rhythm and elegance in his swing, that may even exceed Tigers. He loves golf and whishes to play every day to someday get a scholarship for an American college. He just needs an English teacher and somehow a little money for all the shoes he trashes so his parents will let him play every day. Andres ends up beating me by a shot and is more than overjoyed over the buffalo bill balls I have for him. I leave the academy with a mixture of feelings. Inspired by the passion, joy and dedication these young kids bring up for the game, just like I did and still do, and that binds me so close to them and puts us on the same level. On the other hand the powerlessness I feel, that the big majority of these kids will never get a real chance to leave their dreams and passion and make it all the way. I leave the place convinced that I want to help, deliver them shoes, balls and clubs – a tiny drop and a huge burning stone. Andres and Victor step onto the putting green for another practice session on the only grass area for miles. Here they can prepare for the national tournaments, the few chances they get to prove their skills and open the doors to a different world.

Swiss Golf Cup
62
With the Swiss Golf Cup a variety of tournaments & tournament series will be summarized for the first time in a single national annual ranking list. Due to complex calculation the handicap is more and more in the centre of interest, while the pleasure of playing golf and getting good personal results have become less important. For ambitious golfers, regardless how good they play, there is today no opportunity to compare several tournaments played on the basis of results. This circumstance the Swiss Golf Cup wants to improve giving every participant the opportunity to either compare throughout Switzerland or with people who have a similar handicap.
There is the intention to inspire as many golf clubs in the ASG for participation, so the Swiss Golf Cup can create a unique club ranking based on the played results over the whole season and not just a single Championship. And the long-term aim is a European Golf Cup, uniting the best club golfers in a European final. The Bunker/s Up Tour 2014 is proud to be part of this years Swiss Golf Cup.

Calvados Équipe Golf
64
Golf is not yet the most popular sport in Switzerland and hence it is a bit of a mission to find a public place to celebrate the great events in our sport like The Open, The Master or The Ryder Cup with our friends. One of them is the charming Calvados Sports Bar at Idaplatz in the heart of Zurich. As Linus, the man behind the bar, lost his soul to the sport, soon his fellas followed – all what one could call a bit of characters. Party management is their business, golf their passion. The foundation of an association was the logic consequence: Calvados Équipe Golf. Few rules steer this elite society. They take only 18 members, the front 9 and the back 9. Becoming one of them is not all that easy. One thing is for sure: Who asks will not. I had the pleasure to gather them at a table and elicit a few interesting opinions from them:
Golf or football? Difficult question… (The majority with a sheepish grin) Calvados or whiskey? Well, in the hip flask whiskey for sure! (the mob agrees with their leader) 5 or 6 iron? Naa, hybrids I would say. Irons aren/t really my thing (Beat looks around his mates for affirmation) GC Zumikon or Dolder? Dolder for sure, Dolder is Zurich! (They all agree on that one)
Tiger Woods or John Daly? John Daly? Never heard of him, but that haircut, I go for John! (Justin has made his decision. Linus disagrees...) Mike Shiva or Christoph Blocher? All theses chicks working for him on Shiva TV. For sure Mike Shiva, he made it!! Made Millions out of nothing! (Agreement again) Dolly Buster or Angelina Jolie? Well, that one/s an easy one!! (Mischa with a smile. To the reader to interpret…)

Engadine Autumn Golf Week
Longest-DriveChampion
28th International Engadine Autumn Golf Week & 37th Seniors/ Golf Trophy, Samedan and Zuoz-Madulain Golf Course / 4 — 7 September 2014
Golf Club Arosa (1850 meters above sea level) 19 — 21 September 2014
When the light plays on a multitude of colors amid the mountains of Upper Engadin, it is time for the International Autumn Golf Week. This hard-fought tournament is played over several days in a convivial and cultured atmosphere. Only serious golfers stand a chance of taking the overall title, but merely taking part is enough to guarantee every golfer that incomparable Engadin autumn feeling. The soughtafter Seniors/ Golf Trophy is contested in tandem with the International Autumn Golf Week. This separate category is reserved for seniors aged 55 or over (men) and 50 or over (ladies), and the victor has the honour of being presented with a traditional Swiss chair hand-crafted in pine.
The altitude of the Golf Club Arosa (1850 meters above sea level) makes it a bit easier to hit the ball longer than usually. Due to the lower air pressure the small ball flies up to 10 percent longer than on golf course set at the seaside. The best of the best long hitters match from September 19 to 21 2014, at Graubünden Longest-Drive-Championship.
FORMATS AND RULES The formats are strokeplay for categories 1 and 2 and Stableford for category 3 and the Seniors category. The exact handicap requirement for the International Autumn Golf Week is 36.0. Five days of golf and four nights in a partner Hotel from CHF 908.– all inclusive – meals, refreshments and player night/s dinner. Match and green fee only, CHF 520.–. www.engadine-golf.ch
QUALIFICATION You can qualify for this unique final event at more than 50 tournaments throughout Switzerland, among them the Bunker/s Up! Golf Tour. Check www.bunkersup.ch/tour2014 for details. As per 31 August 2014, those 20 men and 20 women who are listed on top of this Longest Drive Ranking List, are qualified for the Championships. You are also qualified if you have won the Longest Drive at one of the 32 Golf Journal Tournaments in Germany.

Nothing in the world can one get prepared on the arrival at the PURAVIDA RESORT Jardin Tropical: a multi-storey oasis with vaults, domes, balconies, pools, lounges, terraces, golf lounge, incredible restaurants and much more, held in bright white as typical for the Moorish architecture. With 4 stars given, this hotel beats everything, and seriously: it/s hard to imagine what or how they need to improve to get 5 stars or more. After a quick check-in getting surprised went on. With regard to price there are affordable deals and seasonal specials for anyone who plays with the idea to fly to Tenerife. We can highly recommend this island –offering 8 different golf courses, a beautiful volcanic landscape with kindly climate all around the year and with the PURAVIDA RESORT Jardin Tropical your own relaxing oasis!

Who is Switzerland/s upcoming Ricky Fowler? What does it take to have a Paula Creamer in Switzerland? Do we even want a Henrik Stenson in Switzerland? It certainly takes a lot of practice and love for practice in order to get there. It needs the right environment – facilities, coaches, supporting parents. One might switch between golf and soccer and later become a baker – and still love golf. Migros Golfparks are pioneers in Switzerland giving young people the chance that golf becomes a part of their ever yday life. It is therefore not surprising that some talents walk out of their academies. I had the pleasure to talk to two of them.

71 Favorite club? Driver Favorite drill? At the moment I love to practice my short game Your hero? Paula Creamer, I love her game and style. And actually my dad, he was a good hockey player and cyclist. Now he would be a good golfer if it wasn/t for his temper ;-) Who brought you to Golf? My brother and my dad Against whom do you like most to win? Ever yone! What/s best about Golf? To be in nature, travelling and always meet new challenges How can we bring more young people to play golf? Bring them to the course and put a club in their hand! ;-) What else the world needs to know about you? I am a funny and ambitious girl who loves golf and follows her dreams! What are your dreams? To become a golf pro and that my family stays healthy and happy. Last word? GOLF
Favorite shot? That perfect 5 iron from 170 meter to the pin Favorite drill? Long drives and short putts. I practiced 3-footers so long that I made 99 out of 100! Your Hero? Rickie Fowler for style and Tiger for swing. Is style important? Well, score is more important ;-) But many out there should definitely work on their colors! Fiercest competitor? My brother, he is younger but better. I love to beat him the most and loosing hurts most. But we still love to play together. Golf or ice hockey? Hard question. I would probably pick ice hockey because it is a team sport. What/s best about Golf? The drives. And it/s a good balance to school and hockey. How can we bring more young people to play golf? We should loosen the dress code. It still scares off a lot of young people. What would you change about golf in Switzerland? The traditional clubs should finally open up to all the golfers! Last word? Birdie!

Windelsham Golf Club is a hushed, gladded oasis of carefully manicured fairways, nestled in Surrey commuter belt. Here Pimms is supped on the terrace by sunkissed gentile members, while music, if any, is of the hushed, harmonious kind.
Gjermund Bratten and Heikki Sorsa, base jumper Cedric Dumont and Swedish Skateboarder Erik Pettersson rocking up and rolling onto the fairways.
It is perhaps the most unlikely setting for a congregation of action sports heroes, yet on the 19th and 20th of May that is exactly what occurred: the Oakley King of Greens rolled up to disturb the peace. First a gas guzzling Red Bull DJ tank shouldered its way onto the sun terrace, sparked up a genie and sent club members scurry from its beats. Then came the hitters in dribs and drabs, with the likes of snowboarders Ben Kilner,
Day one was just a friendly knock about but come Tuesday the assembled athlete/s were divided into flights of three and four players, of which there were nine in total. Favorites to win were last year/s winner Cedric
Dumont, Norwegian freeski champ PK Hunder, snowboarder Konsti Schad and Tobi Tritcher; while there were also a handful of players, including British Olympic piper Ben Kilner and Olympic bronze medalist boardercrosser Konsti Schad who were also sporting single figure handicaps. Each flight would play eighteen holes of the Windelsham course, with a surprise game of «Beat the Pro» – getting nearest the pin – on the 14th, against guest two-time European Champion Rafa CabreraBello. Surprisingly, Rafa was beaten four times, by Andrew Eddy, Oli Walker, Gjermund Bratten and Cedric Dumont. As the 18 holes drew to a close the weather broke and the last flight to come in were soaked

to the bone. A glitch in the computer scoring lead to a manual recount, with the surprise result that Ben Kilner and big wave surfer Alain Riou were drawn neck and neck on 23 points, with favorite PK a single point behind in third. Thankfully, the drizzle lifted just long enough for a playoff between Alain and Ben on the par 5 18th. There was much to play for, as the winner would not only be crowned Oakley/s King of Greens but also receive a wildcard to the following day/s PGA European
Tour Pro-Am contest, in Wentworth playing alongside Rafa, and a priceless Nixon timepiece. Ben would later admit that he was more nervous teeing off than he was dropping into the Olympic pipe but, despite shaking with fear, he was able to chip out of the rough, onto the green and sink a fine ball to beat the visibly disappointed Alain Riou by a single stroke.
«It was a close shave!» he admitted later. «I never thought I would get that far, but then I became really ambitious and definitely wanted to win that thing. Now, I/m just super happy». The following day Ben went on to win at the PGA European Tour Pro-Am contest; it would seem that he can apply his natural talents to pretty much any sport. Living proof that the Oakley King of Greens isn/t just a season ender jolly but a great stage for actionsport/s budding golfers.
