introduction

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the places and the moments taking our breath away. This is why we decided to dedicate ourselves to the field of golf travel. We checked out the towns of Cascais and Estoril in the greater Lisbon area and travelled along the coast to Peniche, putting everything through its paces. We found perfect links and decent surf too in truly coastal conditions. W

W

However, all the rain and the mud did not manage to discourage us from spending five days back-to-back on five different courses. Furthermore we had the great pleasure to meet Paolo Quirici, Switzerland/s best golf player to-date and legend in his home club and town. He shared with us his passion for restoring original wooden 8

hickory clubs, the art of swinging with modesty and touch and how he plans to bring young Swiss golfers to the next level in the world of professional golfing. We were also provided with insights behind the scenes by young Swiss professional Olivier Gilmartin on his hard road through qualifying school as well as by the charismatic Jill Kinloch. She talks about choosing golf over tennis, her own approach to the game and how she even ended up in Switzerland. Last but not least we are very happy to print a beautiful bunker shot by Lorenz Holder. No less a figure than the overall winner of the 2013 Red Bull Illume, THE most wanted photo Award in action sports photography. We hope this is an inspiration to new shores in golf photography.

Lisbon, one of the most influential historic metropolises of the last 12

milleniums, has undoubtedly had bigger issues to deal with than the leisure-seeking BUNKER/S UP! crew. Boosting a wealthy selfesteem due to their influence on the new age revolution of golf, their appearance may not exactly be classified among folks like Vasco da Gama, who set sail to develop the fortune-bringing spice and ore trade in India and other distant places. In this ver y port the likes of us rather enjoyed a cold beer and grilled fish in the sunset instead of preparing for battles against pirates and enemies in the unknown. Nevertheless navigation is not only important in seafaring. Winds must be thoroughly considered on fairways near the ocean when approaching targets with golf balls and golf carts must be carefully steered not to spill precious drops of beer and whiskey over board.

There are more similarities between the new age golfer and the ancient monarchs in the aforesaid country, such as their penchant for games, narcotics and women. Take Ferdinand I. aka the handsome: Instead of marrying Leonora of Castile for the sake of peace with his fellow neighbours in Spain, he fell in love with the local prime specimen of a female and married her instead. Ferdinand paid the dues for many years to come as Leonora/s father Henry II. King of Castile paid revenge by plundering Lisbon every now and again. Battles have to be fought, and golf wasn/t golf if it wasn/t for the money. A well stroken putt tastes just better when it plunders your friend' purse. 5 Courses in 6 days was another tough schedule for the BUNKERS/UP team considering that an early morning surf in Peniche – one of the world/s prime surf destinations, a fresh bacaljau (cod fish) a la plancha and one or two late night drops of sweetest port wine must not be missed. Watching fishermen throwing their bait from the high rocks around the corner of Cascais as the big November swells hit and tower in fountains of 10 metres in the sunset releases a mixture of apocalyptic feelings and pure freedom. «Más, más Cascais!»

Peniche

16

Peniche is a little fishing town about an hour/s drive from Lisbon. Besides being the second largest reloading point in Portugal for sardines, the town is rather quiet and relaxed. In fall though, when the first storms hit, surfers from all over the world travel to town and one of the world/s greatest beach breaks offers the pros hollow barrel rides.

8 feet, 15 secs, offshore – this will raise any surfer/s heartbeat. The measurements refer to swell size, period and wind direction respectively and were the conditions we found the day we were to play the beautiful Golf links of Praia del Rey. Beckna and me just knew that we had to hit the water before the golf ball. The 10:30 am tee time was early and not changeable on the top ranked golf course in Portugal.

We organized boards and paddled out as the sun wasn/t even about to rise in the cold November water. Life is tough but nice when you don/t give yourself the choice. But some things in life you just can/t buy‌ The other two boys chose to nap two more hours in the van. Nice as well, maybe not so tough.

17

That image of a surfer crossing the fairway during a European tour event had been in my mind for ages and I felt even happier to do two of my greatest passions in the same place the same day. This truly makes the Peniche region so special, and even more when you are served a fresh Bacaljau a la prancha (grilled Cod fish) and a sweet drop of port wine for dessert after a fulfilled day.

The images in all the travel agencies of the famous golf course speak for themselves. Praia del Rey offers it all, Iberian links feeling at its best and a fresh smell of pine trees in the forests of the coast combined with a superb layout. No surprise that this course has hosted European Tour Events. Only a few drives further up the coast lies the newly opened resort Royal Obidos.

Seve Ballesteros himself drew the course layout - a splendid championship course. The resort offers it all: Oversize Mona Lisa like barock paintings, port wine in golden cups, a Roman like warpainted swimming pool and a majestic terrace overlooking the course, the ocean and the sunset. SPA good, all good – we treated ourselves to a single malt at the bar, sporting nothing but a bathrobe...

Estoril

20

Estoril has a long tradition as a retreat of the beautiful and rich in Portugal. The casino grande is the largest in Europe and was the inspiration for the Bond novel Casino Royal. The Palacio do Estoril is where Bond stayed on his secret mission. Staying here is still a throwback to the 1950s. An amazing entrance hall

reminds of all the celebrities who walked in here over the years. Just across the street lies the Casino and as not all members of the team were equally impressed, some tried their luck at gambling. Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.

reference

21

We better skip the rest of that night and talk about the following day. Thanks to the long tradition of the rich and wealthy in Estoril, the first fine golf course with an equally rich tradition can be found a few minutes up the hill. It is nestled among valleys and old trees, all within town limits so to speak. It is one of Portugal/s oldest courses with a history dating back to 1936. Opposite the clubhouse I discover 3 elderly men with wrinkled faces and heaps of character. Excited to hear interesting, passionate stories I make

my way over. They do not seem to bother much, and all I can get out of them is that each of them has his own number, and that they rather refer to themselves by numbers rather than by names. Of course they have their own rankings and championships, and apparently number 8 used to be a great player. Well. I leave them in their self-chosen tranquilibrium and head over to the ball. New day, new skins, and as we know: Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.

22

Another superb Golf facility lies behind Estoril/s neighbouring city of Cascais. Following the steep cliffs along the Atlantic coast one finds Oitavos dunses very soon. Paving its way through the characteristic umbrella pine trees one soon finds the ocean view towards Cabo de Roca, Europe/s westernmost point. With the BUNKER/S Up boys, we really spent a perfect summer/s day on Oitavos Dunes in late November. A little nap in the sun on the perfect grass and some cold beers on the back nine made our trip complete. Have a look at the footage, Beckna killed it!

Lisbon

24

The city of the seven hills has overcome more ups and downs than most cities. Wealth and prosperity through international trade followed by disease, plunderings and new reigns. In an era of tranquility that had lasted for quite a while, one of the largest earthquakes in history hit the town in 1755. Two thirds of the city were destroyed and death tolls rose up to 60/000, putting Lisbon back to square one. The reconstruction shaped today/s inner city

called the Baixa, the true definition of «downtown». It is sprawled with cafés, old cable cars, street artists and the famous Castanheiros, the chestnut roasters. Hipsters can get a nice beard cut for a few euros, the hatlover his tweed and the fancy one any kind of haute-couture design. We went for some chestnuts and a Super Bock beer next to the castle and watched the street lights turn the lanes and houses into a festival of colours.

Summing it up, we especially want to thank Thomas Bächler and Golf and Travel for making this trip real. Just have a look at the footage: This is what you can get when booking your next golf trip with them. Book your Portugal experience at www.golfandtravel.ch

Paolo Quirici — the art of class

«I don/t know where it all came from, but as long as I can remember I was always interested in old stuff». Paolo shows me his favorite club, a «mid-mashie» or 3-iron as the clubs were to be numbered in later days. Finding the club was a lucky punch, «one in 500». You see the club on eBay and you may get a hint of who the manufacturer was. In this case Tom Stewart had produced the club for Ted Ray, an Open Champion in the early 1900s, as the carvings in the shaft and grip showed. «It/s not about perfection. It/s about the feel, it/s your relationship to the club and the story behind it. Either you like the club or you don/t.» – Strong words from a man of this caliber in a modern golf world where the latest headlines are about distance and control achieved through high-tech.

character

Paolo Qurici himself is arguably the most successful player in Switzerland/s modest golf history. His father brought him to the sport as a 7 year old living close to the golf course in lugano. He turned Pro at the age of 21 and claimed himself on the European Tour between 1989 and 2001 and did so as a lonely Swiss wolf driven by his passion. From the first day he played with the old hickory clubs he loved the game even more. «I start to believe that the old clubs get the best out of the good players and the players love them because of that.» Great players like Vijay Singh used them for rhythm practice during the off season. «Modern golf is a very physical way of playing the game, the hickory equipment brings you closer to the spiritual side of this incredibly fascinating game», Paolo considers.

The nine holes with Paolo and hickory clubs were a mind changer also in my golf life. Immediately fell in love with the old fashion, the urge to let the club swing in its own rhythm and the intense, soft feeling that shivers through the body when hitting the sweet spot. I joke with Paolo and force him to a match. The 2013 hickory world champion laughs and a few holes later and another tap-in for par with his wooden beauty of a putter he states an impressive score of one under.

MORITZ FREY // Paolo, what exactly is your position with the ASG? PAOLO QUIRICI // My position goes under the name of «sports director». In France, they would call it «directeur technique». I am responsible for the development of the ASG/s sports sector and in particular for introducing new strategies that will help the ASG promote the game with the youths and deliver results.

We drive to Paolo/s home where he shows us his work bench and his large collection of clubs from all ages. He sits down, grabs an old persimmon driver that is awaiting restoration and starts by regripping the club with wild leather. The image is intense: A humble man with complete devotion to his handcraft. «I/m not sure if it is all good what/s happening with our world. Back in the days we were able to do so much by ourselves and sustainable products!» He has picked up knotting techniques,

M // What do you have in mind to get Swiss golfing to another level? P // The Swiss golfing community works like most businesses in Switzerland. There are four different cultural regions in our country, and this is where our great potential lies. At the same time, these four areas have different mindsets and different languages. I believe that the mutual respect between these

knowledge about the wood and materials on the road from the few manufacturers in the U.S. and Scotland that still try to pass on the art from generation to generation. Paolo pulls out another 100 year old club by the old Tom Stewart. Its modern-ish look was what struck me first. «Simplicity is ver y hard to achieve» Paolo muses. The glimpse in his eyes reveals that this concerns more than the aesthetics of a club, namely swinging it as much as the art of living itself.

different subcultures is one of the keys to success. I have decided to keep the juniors in their area where they continue to work with the best coaches available in that particular area. The coaches are selected based on their experience and their will to help juniors improve on every level. By using the PISTE test designed by Swiss Olympic, we rank and select our best players.

character M // Tell us more about Swiss Olympic/s PISTE test. P // The PISTE test is a checkup list allowing us to evaluate an athlete in different aspects of his or her development, such as results, capacity, age, physical development, social skills, mental strength, and so on. The whole list is a collaboration between the ASG and Swiss Olympic who taught us how to use this neat tool.

M // Why is your approach different to how it used to be?

34

P // Over the past few years, there has been a huge change when it comes to our juniors’ attitude and determination. We see a whole lot of young players boosting a much better work ethic, making them way more goal-oriented. We absolutely have to make sure that this mindset continues to be, allowing our players to constantly improve.

M // What was the biggest challenge over the last couple of years and how did you respond? P // The biggest challenge for a small country like ours is to allow more players to get involved and to offer them enough opportunities to gain the necessary experience so that they can eventually become tough competitors. We have some seven thousand juniors in Switzerland, but like most European countries,

we lose around 50% of them somewhere between the U14 and the U20. I believe that both our school system and our workoriented mindset draw away young players away from the world of sports. Not just from golfing, but from all sports in general. We try to cut down on travelling time in order to have more time on our hands for training and working towards a strong young team in every region of Switzerland. So far I have had a lot of positive feedback all-around, and I ask the coaches to constantly work towards success.

M // How long does it take for the Swiss golf community to get to an international tour level? Is this even possible or will we never be a golf nation? P // This is a good question indeed. We managed to put a new structure into place which is running smoothly so far and will eventually lead to good results from our juniors. We are regularly competing on an international level all over Europe. We expect 290 playe rs to visit the numerous events this year. The juniors who gain international experience abroad have without a doubt the best chances to grow into strong international players. Stepping up from amateur to international professional comes down to the player/s dedication and determination.

In Switzerland, it is not very common to make a living as a professional athlete, but this may change. Players like Benjamin Rusch and Joël Girrbach are the living proof that it is indeed possible to make a smooth transition from amateur to professional. I believe they both have great experience, gathered with the ASG and individually in the USA. In my opinion we are already a golf nation. However, we have to deliver more and better results in order to be considered a strong golf nation. We must not forget that there are only 90 000 golfers with 7 500 juniors on 8 m people in this country. It is therefore not very easy for us to develop many champions. Take Germany for example: There are 660 000 players, yet not so many great players on Tour. Both Bernhard Langer and Martin Kaymer show that it takes a lot of commitment from the German golf federation as well as strong individual will and determination.

M // What are your goals for your first season as sports director? P // My first goal this first season is to get the 290 juniors to play internationally, to have them enjoy this experience and encourage other juniors opting for the same thing. The new system allows for more exchange between the visiting international players

character and those who mostly play in Switzerland. It is definitely one of my main goals to get the best international players talking to the ones of tomorrow. As usual, there are a couple of important events coming up such as the European Team Championship this July, a perfect test for our best players. Last year the Ladies finished 3rd , the Men 8th. We will try hard to again achieve strong results in this year/s event. There is the Men/s World Championship, where we finished 10th last year. A great result. And of course the World Amateur Championship taking place in Mexico next year. We will do our best to put together strong women/s and men/s teams. 36 M // Do you still play normal golf or are you completely obsessed with Hickor y? P // For me golf has become a part-time activity. I really enjoy the bigger challenges offered by Hickory golf clubs. Our courses over here are not very long, and some of the modern clubs and balls make them very easy to attack. The Hickory clubs I repair and restore myself have a nostalgic feel to them. It is incredible to think that those clubs were played 90 or more years ago, some of them by great players like Ted Ray or Harry Vardon. As a passioned golfer I feel I can only act as a sounding bord for a golf club that has survived and traveled through the time.

I feel priviledge to be able to enjoy this piece of art made by some great and skillfull worker back in the early 1900. My personal competitive set was first owned by Ernest Jones, a British pro who moved to the US and opened the first ever indoor in N.Y. This great gentleman lost half of his right leg in the First World War and still played round par. However, as a fitter for GIMAR golf, I still enjoy modern clubs. The perimeter weighted GIMAR heads and their forged blades are very performing and satisfy even my most demanding clients.

M // What is the stor y behind Hickor y golf? How would you explain it to someone who never played golf? P // Golfing is not a modern game but looks back on a 500-year-long history. Hickory clubs were only produced until 1935. In 1930, Bobby Jones took the last Hickory major win. Some of the clubs in my collection are 90 years old, but they still perform incredibly well once the player gets used to them. Over the years, I have lost some of my speed and length and needed a different challenge. To someone who just got into golfing, Hickory would probably not mean much. This is why I tend to only show them that the club, no matter how old it is, does not do any magic, but that the player does.

M // Tell us about your biggest success in golfing? P // I believe that the biggest success for any golfer who started as a kid is the ability to appreciate every game like it was the first day. Personally, I still enjoy a simple round of 9 or 18 holes, and this is truly a gift. I had 13 holes-in-one in my golfing career. The best one was hands down last April when I played a Hickory match-play with a good friend and student of mine. I managed to hole a 3 iron from 175 m! One of my best days ever was when I played a round of 60 (-12) on the June 25th 1989 at the Memorial Barras at CransMontana. That was the lowest round of my career.

M // Does Swiss golf community need a BUNKER/S UP magazine and the BUNKER/S UP Golf tournament tour? P // I have seen this magazine and I really like the idea behind it. Its format and its outstanding quality have immediately attracted my attention, and the story about the Moroccan brothers was a very inspiring read. I believe that the Swiss golf community appreciates a different magazine. When it comes to events, I personally have not had a BUNKERS/UP! experience yet, but I can imagine that it boosts a very friendly and pleasant atmosphere.

There are not many Swiss professionals out there tr ying to go all the way. It is not an easy path as Switzerland/s talent pool is still in a ver y early stage. Young players basically have to do it all on their own. Olivier may be a dreamer, but he certainly is one of the most dedicated Swiss golfers. However, this does not stop him from goofing around. He is always up for anything freaky and spontaneous. We had the pleasure of spending a day with him on last year/s BUNKER/S UP! tour stop at Limpachtal. After a difficult start, he found his recipe for the day, left his shoes dr ying in the sun and scored even par on the back nine with no shoes on – pretty decent.

ANDI AHLM // Olivier, what/s up? Thanks for having us at the Olivier Gilmartin supporters’ day at your home club Interlaken last year and sharing a few holes with us. You scored 8 birdies…golf is a ver y easy sport, right? OLIVIER GILMARTIN // Easy?! We all love this game for different reasons. Personally, I love the game for its unexpected twists and outcomes. One day I feel like I am on top of the world, the next day the hole could not look any smaller. Neither my swing nor my clubs have changed, it is all about controlling your mind! To put it in the words of Tiger Woods: «Who can control his mind can control his world.» 40

O // Most of my tournaments are either 3 rounds or 4 rounds between 210 and 280 shots. A split second of not concentrating in a couple of rounds could easily cost me 5 shots a tournament, that is either making the cut or contending for the win. For me it is a constant battle, managing my thoughts around the course. At my level everybody can hit the shots, it is about showing the same consistency over a round, a month or a year.

«The Q-Schools are brutal, at the beginning of the week there A // How important is the support you get from back home to are 100 players you? competing for O // At the end of the day golf is still a game. After four 20 spots» years as a professional travelling all around the world trying to make a living from golfing, I find it very nice to have family and friends who support me in every way possible both on and off the golf course.

A // From what I have seen following you, your game was really solid last year, but you missed various qualifying school cuts by just one or two strokes. What is this last missing puzzle piece?

A // Do you have a strategy how to put it together this year? O // I do quite a bit of bookkeeping over all my tournament rounds. My statistics boost averages of my drives, iron shots, short game, bunker play and putting. Month to month I can see where I am improving and what I have to work on. I had an average of 32.3 in putts per round last year, a real clear indicator of where I can improve the most.

That is an easy fix I think, but it will make the putting green my 2nd home for 2015.

A // I think our fellow readers do not know much about the life of a golf pro. You have salmon and champagne ever y day, you only choose 5 star suites and have girls in ever y larger city, right? O // When I first turned pro, I thought I would gradually improve, play in bigger tournaments and get a couple of sponsors. I had to learn the hard way that this is not how it is done. I have improved every year, grew longer with the driver, calmer on and off the course, developed a better time management and prepared myself more thoroughly for tournaments. The thing with golf is that it does not always follow the principle of «What you put in is what you get out». Professional golf can sometimes be cruel, and just one good tournament or season can change things drastically. Us mini tour players spend more money than we make. The tours we play on are called developmental tours. We spend the money to pay for tournament-related costs like entry fees and transportation as well as on golf lessons, mental and fitness coaches. But I can already taste the champagne after my 1st win on tour…the BUNKER/S UP! crew might be pouring it over me :-)

42

O // First thing in the morning I head to the gym. I try to mix things up every day. Even before tournaments I go to the gym, but focus more on warming up and stretching. Afterwards I head home to have a rather large breakfast before heading to the range. I usually hit about 120200 balls, 40% will be with my LW, SW and PW working on my distance, control and touch. Some players call the one between 50 and 120 meters the «money shot. After that I usually play a game against other good players, always playing for a cold beer, 5 dollars or something else.

A // Tell us a bit more about the qualifying schools, they are tough mental tests as I hear? O // They are brutal, at the beginning of the week there are 100 players competing for 20 spots. There are three of these stages. I start at the first stage in Bogogno, Italy. The players who show up can all make it. Over the four rounds, there is no room for any big mistakes. It is a marathon really, you have to stay organized and fit throughout the week up to the 72nd hole. Only then you can let yourself go. I have learned a lot during the last couple of Q-schools, I am confident that I am a couple of steps

closer to making it than at my first Q-school. I remember being super nervous at every single shot and never getting into a rhythm back then.

O // Those two were definitely memorable moments, but the best one was the trip to the GANT Open in 2013 in my last week in Sweden before heading back to Florida. The tournament took place in Turku, Finland, and I decided to take buses, trains and ferries to get there. Traveling on public transport with golf gear and a big suitcase is never easy. I started off in Helsingborg, Sweden, took a train and a bus to Malmo airport, flew to Stockholm, slept at the Ferry building because it left at 7 am the next day, forgot to book a cabin so I was at the bar for 11 hours, slept an entire week in a single person tent on a campground overlooking the water, a couple o black crows stole my dinner one night and my sleeping bag got stolen before the last night. But I had an amazing week, met great Finnish people and played some golf. On the way back I headed straight to Copenhagen airport and the luggage I left behind in Malmo

O // You would think that it is either a result or my ranking at the end of the season with merit, but for me it was my supporters’ day tournament in Interlaken. The weather was gorgeous and all of my supporters and friends were so grateful to help me out! Everybody really enjoyed themselves. I do not get a lot of chances to personally thank people and spend some time with them, but I did that day and that was truly the highlight of the year.

A // I saw some pics of you at a fashion week. You did a good job at looking fresh, do you not want to switch fairways and catwalks? O // (Laughing) We are really lucky to have a bunch of awesome clothing companies in golf, and that there are no limits to colors and styles. I used some funny one liners for golf like “Dress to impress” and “Every day is a fashion day”. The fairway is the new catwalk, at least for me!

A // Thanks for the chat. all the best and we hope to pour champagne over you one day!

Thanks to the Americans we are blessed with birdiebooks. The OPEN is the oldest major tournament and the only one in Europe. After a long and tiring trip across the pond, American players repeatedly felt discriminated for not knowing the low-key Scottish links courses and threatened to withdraw from the competition without any accurate course description. This is why Strokesaver Ltd Scotland, founded by the R&A in the 1970s, developed a standardized way to measure, illustrate and document any golf course. Thanks to their handy size, they fit in every pocket and even withstand rain if both your dog and your caddy stayed at home and technology failed on you. True Scottish fashion.

2015 brings the digital revolution. The Strokesaver is now available as eBook, iPhone速, iPad速 and Android速 app. Free of charge on iTtunes and Google Play. The app features illustrations, it also boosts local rules, EGA ratings, scorecards and further details on every club, ready for you to be checked out wherever you are, be it on your daily commute, at the pub sinking a few or debating with your mates.

Heads up, it/s golf time in the world of action sports! Drop your decks, shelve your skis, and sack off the surf ‘cause on the 28th of July 2015 the third edition of Oakley KING OF GREENS kicks off in Berlin! The Oakley KING OF GREENS is the only international golf contest for the crème of action sports. In it the rough and tough of the snow, surf, dirt and ‘crete set aside their sweeping generalizations of each others‘ sports and set about each other like gentlemen over 18 holes of quality golf.

by Europe/s most successful Ryder Cup player, Sir Nick himself, it has been the reputation of being the most demanding course in Germany. It/s therefore no surprise that it/s in the running to host the 2022 Ryder Cup.

© Sami Tuoriniemi

After the success of last year/s battle in London, the 2015 event will set up camp at the Faldo Course Berlin, A-Rosa Scharmützelsee resort. Designed

In last year/s contest English pipe Olympian Ben Kilner beat a robust field of superheroes from 10 different action sports from around the world, including French surfer

Alain Riou and Norwegian freeskier PK Hunder. The finals were fought over a splendid «NIXON x KING of GREENS watch» and a wild card to play alongside Euro Champ Rafa Cabrera-Bello in the Pro-Am at the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth. They culminated in a head to head play-off between Alain and Ben, with Ben chipping out of the rough to beat Alain by a single stroke, leaving PK Hunder in third. Ben and Rafa went on to win the Pro-Am in Wentworth, Ben admitting he was more nervous teeing off there than he was dropping the Olympic pipe. It was a great moment in the history of Oakley KING OF GREENS, proving not only the credibility of the contest but also the high standard of golf played by many in the world of action sports.

49

This year there will be 30-odd international contestants from across the spectrum of action sports - including Ben - vying for not only the contest throne but also for the glory of their sport/s team. Eric Koston is already confirmed as Skate Team captain and confirmation is pending for Devun Walsh to head up Team Snowboard. Both have handicaps in single figures, as do many of the athletes playing, and will be frothing to prove both their worth on the greens.

Whatever the results of this year/s showdown two things are sure: all involved will have a killer time on Sir Nick/s German fairways and there is certain to be some world class golf played. See you in Berlin on the 27th and 28th of July 2015 for the third Oakley KING OF GREENS – 100% stoked golf.

The BUNKER/S UP! Golf Tour Series is one of a kind. Launched four years ago, it continues to breathe fresh new life into the Swiss Golf community. The main difference between The BUNKER/S UP! Golf Tour and other tournaments you might play lies in the nature and the attitude of the participants you get to play with. Not only are you guaranteed to have a shit load of fun playing with interesting people of all ages and from all walks of life, but we focus on making sure that golf

always wins. Still, your score is important, but secondary to an amazing day out on some of the most amazing courses on the planet. Regular participants include bankers, restaurant and club owners, professional sportspeople, celebrities, musicians, lawyers, builders, bakers and candlestick makers. Their skills range from incredibly high to average to beginner. As it is all about participation on whatever level you are at, The BUNKER/S UP! Golf Tour follows all the rules of regular tournaments, but encourages players to show

support of good golf with the introduction the unique Par Shuffle, the Birdie Dance and the rarely seen Hole In One Run. There are rumours that some players occasionally partake in a couple too many ‘Handicap Saver’ refreshments, regularly available on Tee Boxes during the round, and it has been known for playing flights to send up the odd smoke signal or two during a round. One thing is for sure: It is not forbidden to have a laugh here and there. Our goal is to deliver the ultimate golf experience in a contemporary way to you and your friends!

For this year, we tried to put together a tight tournament with some tasty new courses for regulars to the tour while heading back to a number of tour favourites. The rookie on tour is the High Alps weekend: Playing golf on the majestic mountain courses of Sedrun and Andermatt, two of the most insanely picturesque and manicured courses, allows for a truly unique golf experience. Breathtaking high alpine golf at its very best!

The 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course of Andermatt Swiss Alps AG is nestled between the mountain villages of Andermatt and Hospental, an area surrounded by awe-inspiring alpine nature, boarded by the serene powerful Reuss river. As of 2014, the golf course is open on a pay-and-play basis to all Andermatt Swiss Alps property owners, local residents, second-home owners, guests stayingovernight in the AndermattUrseren Valley tourist area and the commune of Tujetsch, hotel guests from Disentis, and members of

the Realp and Sedrun golf clubs. (minimum HCP of 36). The course is set to open to the general public in spring 2016. There is, however, one single exception. Yes, we are talking about the BUNKER/S UP! Tour players! We will have the unique opportunity to play the championship course when the BUNKER/S UP! Golf Tour rolls into Andermatt for the weekend! Your chance to play the exclusive course a year before it opens its doors to the general public! The Andermatt stop is hands down the jewel in the crown of this year/s tour – one not to be missed!

Whispers on the street tell us that the course offers a challenging but fair game for leisure and ambitious players alike off regular tees. Play it in championship tournament length from the rarely seen Gold Tees – set a solid nine iron behind the Whites – and your heart sure will be pounding, bringing out a cold sweat. There is nothing that will make you appreciate just

how pants-dropping good the pros really are than playing a full length championship course! Make sure you have the bragging rights of saying that you have played a championship course (sort of) like the pros! The steep winding road to the beach in the Arrifana bay is as picturesque as you can imagine. Stay in one of the small houses in this rough terrain facing ocean and sunset and you will never want to leave. Arrifana lies in Southern Portugal on the exposed Atlantic coast. The surf camp is just a five-minute stroll from the beach. With various surf beaches nearby, the beach of Arrifana itself is the top spot of the region even for advanced surfers. The variety of spots make the place ideal for beginners. So if you are off to your first surf adventure, this is the place to be!

character

We met Jill on a golf trip to Cyprus in November 2014. The trip was organised by our Travel Partner Golf & Travel AG and it was a so called tournament week which this year will be co-hosted by BUNKER/S UP! Cancel anything from November 27 through to December 4 2015 and note the date in big, fat letters in your diar y. Long stor y short: Jill has a ver y unique character. She has plenty of deep and interesting stories up her sleeve, and we find her a ver y charming and highly skilled lady with a lot of experience. If you wish to work on your golf game, you should definitely check out her course offers.

character

Moritz Frey // Jill, tell us who you are and what makes you special! Jill Kinloch // Born in Scotland, the home of golf. I live and breathe this great game. Played Augusta National at 21. Was selected as golf professional to accompany 70 golfers on a unique Concorde World Golf Tour over three weeks, visiting twelve countries. Managed to persuade the pilot to allow me to practice my putting on the wing, an experience never to be forgotten and never to be repeated.

M // Where did you start and learn to play golf and why? J // I started off as a 14 year-old on the local golf course in my village in Scotland, mainly seeking a break from playing tennis as the No 1 player in Scotland. I managed to reduce my HCP in one week from 30 to 17, which is what really got me hooked. At the age of 21 and with a Handicap of +2, I turned professional.

M // What is your best and worst experience from playing on the tour?

J // The best one would have to be when I shot my lowest round of 68 in the final round of the Italian Open. The worst one hands down when I was leading the Australian Open and played the wrong ball. I was in shock for the rest of the tournament and of course never made the same mistake again.

M // What made you come to Switzerland to teach golf? J // It all began when I was Melanie Mätzler/s coach, at the time Switzerland/s No 1 female amateur golfer from Bad Ragaz. Her family then wanted to bring me over again to help Melanie achieve her goal of becoming a European tour professional - mission accomplished!

M // Do you have a box hidden somewhere on a course in Switzerland? Where can peeps find you? J // There/s ‘Johns Golf’ in Sirnach close to Wil (approximately 25 mins from Winterthur). They have a new driving range with a short game area.

M // Are there any differences in your way of teaching compared to other pros?) J // Thanks to my female intuition, I would say that I have a high level of pedagogical skills, pay a lot of attention to small details and can count on 38 years of golfing experience from all over the world.

M // How important is the mental side of things for a player? J // The mental side plays no doubt a huge part in understanding the game and performing well. My six years as a European Tour player allowed me to gain valuable experience in this part of the game. However, fitness also plays a major role in modern golfing, and with the assistance of Switzerland/s former discus champion and European medal winner in two-man bob Karin Hagmann (nowadays a personal trainer) we developed a ‘fit for golf’ program to assist golfers in getting stronger, more flexible and improving their balance in order to prevent injuries and inevitably make them hit the ball further. www.jillgolf.com

perspective

To be honest, I am not into taking photos of people golfing, but a professional snowboard photographer with a passion for golfing. At last year/s Oakley King of Greens, a golf tournament for action sports athletes, I wanted to connect these two worlds through the lens. I put up a set of lights mainly used to shoot snowboarders and skateboarders around one of the greens. My main goal was to introduce a new look into the world of golf, a way golfing has not been shot before. I enjoyed my new approach so much that I decided to shoot a whole series and I hope you dig my slightly different photo!
