Bunnings ambassadors Ian Jones and Ruby Tui, plus players from the Counties Manukau Rugby Football Union and team members from the local Manukau store, recently set out to raise smiles on the faces of tamariki at Edmund Hillary School in Papakura. The event supported their breakfast club, which ensures students start their day fuelled for learning. After sharing kai with the kids, the rugby legends conducted a skills workshop, while the Bunnings team donated rugby gear – and started planning a return trip to help the school with their garden!

Snip dead flowerheads once roses and other bloomers have put on their first show. Do this before they set seed so they keep flowering throughout summer.

CAFE AU LAIT

This highly coveted dinnerplate dahlia has stunning, large blooms that range in colour from blush pink to creamy beige.

Plant heat-loving basil so you can make pesto. To stop it bolting to seed, cut off flowers and pinch back main shoots, or sow seeds 3 every few weeks. Heading off on holiday? Prevent hanging baskets and pots drying out by adding water-storing crystals to the potting mix.

BRISTOL STRIPE

Large, variegated blooms in raspberry-pink and white paint splatters and speckles make this a must-grow dahlia.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. Brighten a patio or entranceway by planting up pretty pots. Keep it simple with just one type of plant or play with 5 textures and colours by combining flowers with grasses or heucheras. here are lots of simple ways to transform your deck from boring to beautiful. Start by taking a good look at your space. Has it had a style bypass? Is the layout impractical or does it feel less than welcoming? Perhaps it’s short on privacy, bakes in the sun or has an aspect that’s not so appealing. All of these issues can be overcome. Check out these nine ideas to help give your deck new life and purpose.

Create a quiet corner for tackling small garden jobs

“Ensure they’re stretched out to prevent sagging and flapping and avoid attaching to wobbly fences, gutters or downpipes, or directly onto roofing.” Each corner requires a solid anchor point to the house wall or posts that have been secured to the ground. “For smaller, ready-to-hang kits, run ropes to an established tree, a stable fence or posts,” says Natasha.

Screen it

If you want privacy or to obscure an ugly view, try a screening panel or two. They come in a range of materials and colours, often with proprietary fixing kits, and if you’re handy on the tools, they’re a straightforward DIY project. They need to be attached securely – bolted to an exterior wall, screwed to a solid fence or fixed to concreted posts.

Bring in a border

Engage your inner stylist

A style lift might be as simple as rearranging the furniture. Position your lounge seating so it overlooks a pretty garden view or arrange it so your sofa and chairs are facing each other, ready for conversation. Introduce an outdoor rug and add comfy cushions and cosy throws for cooler nights. Bring in side tables to make the area functional and stock the space with solar-powered lanterns for ambience after dark.

Sun protection is a must for alfresco entertaining. Umbrellas are a quick fix but a shade sail with high UV protection provides a summer-long solution, says DIY specialist Natasha Dickins (littleredindustries.com). “Buy one with reinforced holes for faster and safer installation,” she says.

Design a garden corner

If you’re a green thumb, include a workspace in a convenient corner of the deck. It’s brilliant for sowing seeds, potting up seedlings and propagating. Park a ready-made potting bench – or repurpose an old table – in a spot undercover and out of the elements so you can use it year-round. Keep tools and garden chemicals out of the reach of children and be aware of potential watering issues – use pot saucers so there isn’t a continuous drip from your plants onto the timber boards.

Create a relaxed sense of enclosure with greenery, placed in adjacent garden beds or trough planters lining the deck edge, says horticulturist Tammy Huynh. “If you have the opportunity to plant a garden border, do it, as that will give you more deck space,” she adds. If placing planters on a timber deck, Tammy recommends using drip trays teamed with pot feet so if you do overwater (or there’s a big storm), water doesn’t pool under the trays.

Never underestimate the power of twinkly lights, says Marianne Zagaras, creative director of Lytworx. Help to climate-proof your garden by choosing new plants that are more likely to survive extreme weather conditions and nurture existing ones by protecting the precious soil in which they grow.

Tough stuff

Start by choosing plants that can take the heat. Barbara Wheeler, curator at Auckland Botanic Gardens, says a key way to identify suitable plants is to research where they naturally occur. “Plants from hot, dry climates will obviously cope well with those conditions in the home garden,” says Barbara. Mulch madness

Lock moisture into your soil by regularly applying a layer of mulch, rather than leaving it bare and exposed to the elements. Scott Bromwich of Daltons likens mulch to a blanket that keeps your soil moist and cool underneath. Don’t be stingy with it, either. “To achieve the best results, apply a generous layer of mulch, about 5-10cm thick,” he says. “Remember, it is a physical barrier so light layers will have little to no effect.” Scott suggests using a bark-based mulch-wood product – this breaks down more slowly than pea straw, which needs to be reapplied more often. is to water your garden well before applying it to lock moisture in. Use good-quality soil mixes as well. “Choose a garden mix that contains a wetting agent,” says Scott Bromwich. “This ensures uniform wetting of the mix when watering and improves moisture penetration to plant roots.”

PLANTS THAT CAN HACK THE HEAT

Instead of giving established plants a light sprinkle of water often, opt for long, deep waterings a couple of times a week. This will encourage plants to send roots deeper into the soil and make them more resilient during drier spells (veges and flowers will need more frequent watering). “Check by putting your finger into the soil and see if the watering has moistened the soil to a decent depth (up to the first knuckle). If not, keep watering,” says Barbara. “Water in the early morning or late evening, or even overnight using a weeper or soaker hose. This will prevent all that water you’ve spent time applying being wasted, as it evaporates fast in the heat of the day.”

Carex Native New Zealand grasses have evolved to cope with hot, dry and cold conditions. They look sensational planted en masse or spilling over pot edges.

Shrubby tororaro (Muehlenbeckia astonii) A wind-tolerant wiry native groundcover that can be clipped into hedges, topiary or left to ramble.

Aeonium ‘Schwarzkopf’ This sculptural succulent, with black-purple rosettes, looks magnificent in a pot and hardly ever needs to be watered.

Zinnias With colourful blooms that keep going for months on end, this low-maintenance flowering annual will attract beneficial pollinators.

Oioi (Apodasmia similis) This blue-green wetland rush can also cope with periods of drought, so is an indispensable plant for most garden situations.

New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax) Our native harakeke can cope with windy coastal conditions and its flowers provide nectar for tūī and korimako (bellbirds).

Coprosma These hardy, glossyleaved natives can be grown as sprawling groundcovers, clipped into dense green hedges or used in borders and rockeries.

Pelargoniums Perfect for plots, pots or hanging baskets, flamboyant and fragrant pelargoniums come in an array of bold colours and thrive in sunny spots.

Rosemary This Mediterranean herb thrives in hot, dry conditions. Prostrate varieties can be used as groundcover and upright varieties clipped into hedges.

Create shaded areas by planting the ultimate sun umbrellas: trees. “There is really good research* showing street trees lower the ground temperature beneath them by several degrees and make cities much more pleasant places on hot days,” says Barbara. Trees also have a process called transpiration where they sweat water vapour through pores in their leaves, decreasing the overall temperature by cooling down the surrounding air. Grow shade-tolerant plants beneath them such as ferns, clivias and renga renga lilies. When temperatures rise you’ll have a green oasis where you can sit back and cool down.

e all know the value of putting your best face forward, and the view of your home from the kerb leaves an indelible first impression. Continue the warm welcome with an engaging stroll from footpath to front door that will leave your guests surprised and delighted, and make coming home a joy.

Start at the beginning

The first step is to clearly mark where the journey begins, says landscape architect Brayden Murrihy. “Having a clear transition from the footpath to an entry path is essential,” he says. “This is usually achieved through the transition of materials and by using structural elements, like letterboxes, gates and hedges.” There are so many options here: a pair of pillars, a freestanding letterbox or a matching pair of shrubs. Larger features, such as an archway, can look beautiful in the right setting, as long as they don’t detract from the house. Horticulturist Tammy Huynh suggests softening the effect of an archway with a lush climber. “Look for something evergreen so the arch is always covered with some form of greenery. Star jasmine, pandorea, Chilean bellflower, orange trumpet vine and mandevilla are ideal candidates, or passionfruit if you’d like an edible choice. If you’re willing to have bare branches over winter, then wisteria and climbing roses are well worth it.”

On the right track

Do you want to take guests on a scenic route to the front door or a direct line from A to B? The question of straight versus curved paths largely comes down to the style of your home, says Brayden. “With a classic freestanding home, we would prefer a straight path that runs directly towards the front door, whereas in an asymmetrical house you may have more of a curved or staggered path that can lead differently through the front garden,” he says. When deciding on materials, draw inspiration from your house – its style and era, and the colours and materials. “For example, bluestone paving traditionally pairs well with a redbrick home, whereas lighter granite can be more suitable for a lighter home,” says Brayden. Gravel looks lovely and gives a satisfying crunch underfoot. Water features evoke a wonderful sense of calm

A solid path is the most common choice, but pavers with plants between them can make a path look more organic, says Tammy Huynh. “Using different hardscaping materials can also help navigate the journey through to the front door, such as stepping stones to a solid tiled landing to help give a sense of arrival.”

Green scene

As with any part of the garden, hardscaping is only half the story. You can soften path edges with greenery, explains Tammy. “A traditional home lends itself beautifully to tightly clipped box hedges, but the formality can also be softened by mass-planting ornamental grasses, which provide a sense of dynamism to the garden,” she says. Strategically chosen border plants along path edges can add a new dimension to the garden experience – grasses rustle in the breeze, while a row of lavender releases an inviting fragrance. Consider what can be seen from the path as well. The front garden is a fantastic place to create a scene, whether it’s a blowsy bed of flowers or a statement tree. 36 bunnings.co.nz |

Light the way

Safety is paramount, so good lighting should be high on the list of must-haves, but Brayden Murrihy advises not to overdo it. “We like to use low-level path lights along an entry path and on key travel areas, such as steps leading to the house’s entrance,” he says. If stronger lighting is needed to navigate a tricky path, consider sensor lights. Solar lights are an easy DIY option, but make sure they won’t be triggered by anyone walking past on the footpath outside your gate.

Sensory additions

To make the stroll to the front door a truly immersive experience, outdoor speakers are an off-beat inclusion that you can use to pipe relaxing tunes or even birdsong. Working in a water feature is another way to add aesthetic and auditory delight. “Water helps create a visual feature as you walk in and when you’re waiting at the door. If you have moving water, the sound can help diffuse traffic or other surrounding neighbourhood noise, too,” says Brayden.

Spring clean

Begin with a deep clean. Andrew Miller of Hy-Clor suggests scooping out large debris, brushing the walls and floor, then vacuuming. “The process should also involve emptying the skimmer and pool pump baskets and checking if the filter needs a backwash, or if the cartridge element needs cleaning,” says Andrew. Inspecting the plumbing for leaks or corrosion is also a good idea. For steel-framed above-ground PVC pools and spas, which may have

been packed away over winter, Mark Rushton of Bestway advises giving the liner a gentle scrub with soapy water and rinsing before assembly.

Level up

If the water level has dropped, top it up to help filtration and circulation systems work properly. The pool design will often influence the optimal water level but, as a guide, Andrew says aim to keep it between halfway to two-thirds up the opening of the skimmer box. “To take the bunningswarehousenewzealand |

guesswork out of refilling and topping up above-ground pools or spas, which often don’t have built-in skimmer boxes, the Bestway range has a recommended water level line on the inside of the liner or in the instruction manual as a reference,” adds Mark.

Test the water

Before taking a dip, test the water and balance the chemicals. “Hy-Clor test vials are available in the pool aisle,” says Andrew. “You can also get the

water tested at the Hy-Clor kiosk‡ and receive a list of the chemicals and dosages your pool requires.” Another option is to use Hy-Clor test strips with the Hy-Clor water testing mobile app. “This enables you to complete the water test at home and take the list of required chemicals into your nearest store,” says Andrew Miller. If using a saltwater chlorinator, test your salt levels with salt test strips. For an endless summer of swimming, test the water (adjusting as necessary) weekly to fortnightly, depending on usage.

Check the pump

The pump is the workhorse of the whole operation, so inspect it for cracks, leaks or damage to the housing, lid and fittings. Andrew advises listening for unusual noises when the pump is running. “Grinding, screeching or rattling could indicate mechanical issues,” he says. “If the water flow seems weaker than usual, it could suggest a problem with the pump’s impeller (rotor) or motor, or clogged pipes.” If beyond repair, consider upgrading the pool pump.

Filter update

Look for signs your filter may need upgrading. If there’s a high pressure reading on the gauge after cleaning or backwashing, Andrew says it may signal a clog, in which case you should consider replacing the cartridge element or media. Similarly, if your pool water lacks its usual clarity after chemical treatment, it might be your filter, as cartridge elements only have

a life span of two to three years. To protect against leaks and efficiency loss, Andrew recommends regularly inspecting the filter housing. “Make sure to tighten all unions and lube up O-rings with silicon-based lubricant,” he says.

Safety audit

If your pool area has been dormant over winter, give it a comprehensive safety check. Survey the fence to make sure the gaps comply with government standards and that self-latching gates close and lock properly. Check the nonclimbable zone of the pool fence is maintained (see your local authority’s regulations); remove objects that could be used by children to climb over the pool fence (such as furniture, pots) and prune back tree branches that could also aid climbing. For a safety refresher, consult your local authority for a compliance checklist.

PROTECT AND PRESERVE

Pool covers are a great investment as they shield against debris, minimise evaporation and help the water retain chemicals and heat. To keep the cover in good condition, regularly remove debris or dirt with a broom or blower vac and inspect for signs of fraying, wear and mildew, as well as discolouration or brittleness, which can indicate UV degradation. “It can be helpful to use a torch to examine the cover closely for any punctures or tears,” says Andrew Miller. “If your pool cover uses hardware like straps, buckles or clips, inspect these components and when in use ensure the cover is properly tensioned or secured according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.”

ust like fashion, paint colour trends change with the seasons. While no-one wants to repaint their entire house every year, small changes can keep your home looking current for little effort and outlay. Here’s what we’ll see this summer and beyond, and how to work the colours into your home.

The overarching theme is warmth as we seek nurturing spaces, says Dulux colour expert Davina Harper. “The colours are more muted this year, with palettes dominated by rich, warm neutrals like reddish browns, brown-based pinks, olive greens and muted blues,” she says. More than ever, we’re romanced by the natural world. PPG Paints colour specialist Fiona Dawson says the biophilic trend is emerging. “To ‘bring the outside in’, play with different shades of green, plus blues and dusty pinks reminiscent of sunsets and sunrises,” she says.

New heights

White has long been considered compulsory for ceilings, but painting the ‘fifth wall’ in colour can transform a room. “Go with a lighter colour on the ceiling and darker on the walls, or one colour on both,” suggests Davina. “The beauty of ceilings is they mainly only get diffused light, so even if you use the same colour, it will still look a little different.” Take it further by painting all woodwork the same shade. ‘Colour drenching’ is where you apply one colour to multiple surfaces, explains interior designer Charlotte Minty (@charlotte minty_interiordesign). “It’s a cost-effective way to get a high-end look,” she says. “It can be used to great effect in smaller spaces.”

Starring stripes

The antithesis of colour drenching is the feature wall, but there’s still space for this decorating staple, especially if you give it a stripy twist! “Stripes look amazing and add such a fun element to a room. Using a good-quality painter’s tape, you can set up the wall and paint alternating shades of colour,” says Fiona. “This is especially loved for kids’ bedrooms.” bunningswarehousenewzealand |

Lovers of white needn’t dive straight into the boldest hues. Charlotte Minty advises a move towards warmer whites as a gentle transition. “Explore tones of taupe, ivory or sand,” she says. “The change might be perceived as subtle, but the results can be transformational.” As you gain confidence, Davina Harper suggests starting in more private rooms: “The bedroom is a personal space – people won’t be going in and judging! If you want to use a darker colour, the fact that you’re mainly in there at night makes this an easier choice.” Your home’s architecture can also influence paint decisions, with the style of your home inspiring a particular interior palette – such as retro tones in a mid-century house or nautical blues in a Hamptons-style build.

n outdoor lighting plan should be as well-considered as an indoor one. Garden designer Claire Talbot of Auckland-based Sculpt Gardens (sculptgardens. co.nz) says it’s helpful to think about different layers of lighting, using a range of sources. “Look at ambient lighting to create a mood, such as soft overhead lights on a pergola; task lighting for activities like cooking; and accent lighting to highlight specific features, for example stairs and sculptures,” she says.

It’s important to set a budget, advises Jane Wright, Bunnings trend and design manager. “Outdoor lighting can be more costly than indoor lighting, particularly if you want to use brass or bronze to withstand the elements.” Consider practical lighting first, such as low-level or inset lamps for pathways, and spotlights for the barbecue. Decorative wall sconces echo their indoor counterparts, and go beyond function to provide a soft, summer evening cast.”

Interesting textures, such as brickwork, rock walls and screens, can be lit from the top or bottom so the light floods down over the surface, says Claire Talbot. “Wrapping large feature trees – trunks and branches – with builtfor-purpose fairy lights can create a real focal statement.” Also consider the colour of your fittings. “If the walls are warm and earthy, look at bronze or gold detailing,” says Claire. “If the walls are colder colours, then black or pewter would be better suited.”

Wright. Finally, do consider your neighbours. Avoid overlighting your space – shadows can provide an engaging contrast – and have your lights on a timer so that they switch off in the evening at a reasonable hour.

ummers are predicted to get hotter and drier. And with water restrictions a possibility in parts of New Zealand this season, capturing and making good use of water makes great sense. Collecting rainfall in a water tank is a smart first step in urban areas (and usually essential for regional zones), maximising every drop as well as easing your water bills. The benefits don’t end at your hip pocket, either – water tanks can help reduce run-off, which in turn protects stormwater drains and waterways. Water service professional Julian Fyfe says, while using rainwater for drinking is discouraged, a rainwater tank will more than likely allow you to replace all the mains water you use flushing the toilet and in the laundry. And tank water may just save your garden when the heat is on.

When choosing a new tank, match supply to your demand, says Julian. “There’s no point getting a 20,000 litre tank if you’re not going to use all that water,” he says. “Think about your climate (the wetter it is, the less you need to store), what you’re planning to use it for, and the roof area you’ll be collecting from.” Figuring out the best-size tank for your property requires a bit of maths. Horticulture and sustainability specialist Adam Woodhams explains, “One millimetre of rain falling on one square metre of roof is one litre of water. You will never collect 100 per cent of fallen rain due to splashing and overrun, but knowing this figure is useful for doing a rough calculation of how much you have the potential to capture.” Adam then follows with this equation to help choose the right size of tank. “The maths is simple: annual rainfall for your area, multiplied by roof area to be connected, equals potential annual maximum,” he says. “For example: 1000mm x 50sqm = 50,000L. This means that, even with regular use, a 5,000 or 10,000L tank would provide consistent supply as it would likely be regularly topped up.” To get bang for your buck,Julian suggests you connect the tank to bunnings |

your toilet and laundry. “That way, you have a constant drawdown of the water – you don’t want it just sitting there,” he says. “But if you’re also planning to use it for the garden and you’re in a drier area, then the bigger the tank the better.” The ideal tank material depends on its use and location. Plastic models come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but Julian Fyfe says steel tanks are more suitable for storing more than 10,000 litres. Underground tanks are usually concrete.

Where to put it

Slimline designs and colours can make new tanks a landscaping asset. However, Julian advises checking with your council for planning controls, such as the proximity to the street. Other factors to consider include not placing it under trees and sealing it to prevent animals getting in. “Lower temperatures help inhibit biological growth in the water, so tanks are better placed in the shade,” says Julian. Consider the weight, too: 1000 litres of water weighs one tonne. You need to ensure the tank has a level, stable and strong base, such as concrete.

to help prevent debris washing in. You may also require a pump, says Julian. “If you’ll be watering your garden with a watering can, the pressure will be okay, but you will need a pump if you’re connecting the tank to indoors,” he says. Julian recommends a pressure vessel (a cylinder that sits over the head of the pump), so when someone turns the tap, the accumulated pressure pushes the water through the tank, so the pump doesn’t have to constantly turn on and off. “This protects the pump and your pipes by reducing ‘water hammer’, and stops your pipes potentially leaking and breaking,” he says.

A gift for the garden

Plants and soil seem to respond better to natural water than town water, and Adam Woodhams says there are a few reasons why. The pH of rainwater is likely a better balance – though that can be changed by atmospheric pollution – and it is more likely to contain beneficial elements such as nitrogen, an essential plant nutrient. Your rainwater might pick up some less beneficial additions, however. “If you are in a built-up area or an area of high pollution, I would recommend that you have a basic filter attached to your tank to remove potential contaminants like lead, which may otherwise end up concentrated in the soil,” cautions Adam. “Especially if you are growing food plants.”

You’ve done the hard work to collect all that precious rainwater, now it’s time to make sure not a single drop is wasted. Adam Woodhams recommends adding tap timers to all your taps, tank or otherwise. “This is a simple way to conserve water,” he says. There are a few options to consider. Manual tap timer This low-tech option has a mechanical dial dictating how long the tap will run, automatically switching off the water at the end of that period. Digital tap timer A gadget that allows you to control both the duration of watering and when the water runs. This means you can schedule a dawn watering – to maximise absorption and minimise evaporation – without even getting out of your bed. Smart tap timer This is a digital tap timer with more. Connected to an app, it gives you control from anywhere, with greater precision, and can be linked to the local weather service, so your irrigation won’t switch on if rain is forecast. Even better, you can link it to compatible moisture sensors and smart weather stations, for a watering schedule that’s tailored to your garden’s unique needs.

Position cameras over key points of vulnerability. At the minimum, place cameras to cover the front and back doors, and garage. Then look for other potential entry points, such as ground floor windows or gates. Mount cameras out of reach, but low enough to ensure a good view. And watch out for bright light from sunlight, street lights or security lights, which can cause lens flare. Sarica Malhotra of Swann says a camera should be easily spotted. “It serves as a visual warning to potential troublemakers, effectively dissuading thieves from even considering trespassing,” she says. “For an extra layer of security, I highly recommend the installation of Swann’s security signs and stickers. under active surveillance.” Add imitation cameras into the mix to amp up your perceived security. “I would throw in a word of caution though: most troublemakers can easily identify imitation cameras, so make sure when you select one that it looks sturdy and convincing,” says Sarica.

areas like backyard corners, alleys and driveways. “Mount the lights at a height that prevents tampering but still provides effective coverage,” they add. “Angle the lights downward to reduce glare and ensure the motion sensor can detect movement effectively.” Before you buy, there are several factors to consider, including range. “A longer range may be suitable for larger areas, while shorter ranges can minimise false activations,” says the Arlec team. Also look at how long the light will stay on, energy-efficient features such as LED bulbs and dusk-to-dawn sensors (that only operate at night), and PIR sensors.

“Motion-activated lights with passive infrared (PIR) sensors detect body heat and movement, reducing false triggers caused by animals or environmental factors,” says the Arlec team.

Smart technology brings added functionality to traditional security equipment, while potentially putting your mind at ease, as you can use your smartphone to monitor your home while you’re poolside or at the camping ground. With a huge range of smart tech available, you can start small and scale up your security as you like. As well as smart cameras and alarms, smart doorbell cameras are a useful tool, allowing you to not only monitor the front porch, but also receive smartphone notifications and communicate with visitors. “When integrated with other smart devices, smart doorbell cameras can trigger lights, chimes and announcements to make it seem like someone is answering the door,” says the Arlec team. Adding a smart lock to your door means you can monitor movement, allow access to visitors while you’re away and check (and remotely lock) the door after they’ve gone.

Simulate the presence of a diligent gardener by putting watering systems on timers, and keep lawns low with a robotic lawnmower. Inside, smart lights can mimic your daily routines, smart blinds can be programmed to open and close and smart televisions can be scheduled to switch on. “Smart speakers like Amazon Echo or Google Nest can be programmed to play music or simulate conversations at specific times,” adds the Arlec team.

Good neighbours

Don’t underestimate the value of good neighbourly relations. “Ask a neighbour if they could park their car in your driveway, hang their washing on your line so it looks like someone is home, and collect your mail regularly,” suggests Louise Grevel. Bins put out early or left out late, overgrown grass and unruly gardens are sure signs a house is empty – ask your neighbours to collect your bins and mow your verge when they do their own, or hire someone to tackle the lawns in your absence. Make sure your neighbour has your phone number in case of emergencies. And if you can entrust them with a spare key, this is much safer than hiding one outside under a pot!

ou’ve selected your paint and got your drop sheets ready, but have you given serious thought to your kit? If you want to paint like a pro, choosing the right brushes and rollers will save you from regret later, says renovation expert and interior designer Naomi Findlay (naomifindlay.com). “If you don’t have the right tools, more often than not you’ll end up having to do it again, because you won’t be happy with the result and, generally speaking, it’s less effective,” she says. “So, for me, the right paintbrush, the right roller – it’s essential to have the right equipment.” For a painting project you’ll be proud of, here are the key tools to have in your arsenal.

The right brush There are two main for the job types of brush: wall brushes, which are best for large surfaces; and cutter brushes (also known as detail brushes), used for cutting in and for getting precision coverage on trim areas such as skirting boards and window and door frames. ■ Invest in good-quality tools that will last longer, saving you money over time. ■ Clean your brushes thoroughly after use and store them in their original packaging or in a jar (with the brushes facing up) so they go the distance. Store rollers on their ends so the fibres don’t get crushed. ■ Keep your tools in their packaging and only open them when you’re going to use them. If you’ve bought brushes or rollers you don’t need, take them back to Bunnings (with your receipt) for a refund.

making it harder to cut a straight line. “When you use a quality soft filament brush, the end of the brush goes to a precision point, which makes cutting in easier,” he says.

On a roll

Nap length and material are the important considerations when painting with a roller. Nap length (the length of the roller fibres) determines how much paint it will hold. Using a roller with a longer nap on a smooth surface could mean you end up with too much paint, creating ‘stipple’, an orange-peel effect. “The ideal nap when trying to achieve a silky smooth finish on doors is 4mm – this puts on the thinnest film of paint with minimal imperfections,” says Mark. “A 12mm nap is best for ceilings and walls, as it gives a smooth finish but with greater coverage, so you can do two coats instead of three; while a 20mm nap roller loads enough paint to get into nooks and crannies on rough surfaces.” The best roller material for a general DIY painter is microfibre, advises Mark. “It gives a smooth finish without losing fluff and is easy to use,” he says. More experienced painters could try polyester or lambswool rollers. “These hold more paint and get the job done faster – but you need to know how to use them,” he warns. To achieve a good finish with polyester or lambswool, you’ll need to roll over the surface once, then go over it lightly a couple of times to smooth the paint. bunningswarehousenewzealand

1 Remove label and wash empty can. Measure height and diameter of can, transfer measurements to a piece of paper. Fill can with water and freeze upright overnight. Meanwhile, sketch your desired constellation in the centre of the paper.

2 Take can from the freezer, wrap the paper around and tape it to hold it in place. Place on a tea towel. Use a hammer to tap a large nail at each star in the constellation to make a hole. Use different-sized nails to make holes for a scattering of stars around the can.

3 Use the large nail to make two hanging holes on opposite sides of the can, approximately 10-15mm down from the rim. Remove paper from can, place in a large bowl and pour over hot water. Once the ice has melted, remove the can and dry thoroughly.

4 Working on a drop sheet in a well-ventilated area and wearing safety gear, apply three coats of spray paint to the can, leaving to dry after each coat.

5 Use a white liquid paint marker to draw lines between the holes for the stars in the constellation. Leave to dry.

6 Measure and cut a 260mm length of brass wire using pliers. Fold the wire in half and cross to make a V shape, using the pliers to twist a small loop at the top.

7 At each end, measure 20mm and fold wire inwards using pliers. Gently round out the sides of the V shape so that it is a similar width to the can.

8 Thread wire through hanger holes on can, then, using pliers, bend the wire down to tuck the edge into the lip of the can. Put a tealight in the can and hang from a tree or awning.

n Use a hacksaw to cut a 2500mm length from each piece of PVC pipe for the top and base of the screen frame. n Then cut two 1600mm lengths for the sides. n From the remaining pieces cut six 440mm lengths for the legs and feet.

1 Lay frame pieces on a flat surface. Join top and sides with elbows. Attach a tee to bottom of each side. Insert base piece into tees, then legs. Attach tees to leg ends. Insert feet and attach end caps. Stand frame upright and apply two coats of spray paint, leaving to dry.

2 Measure height and width of the screen frame, then transfer measurements to the drop sheet, adding 300mm overlap all round. Mark with tape and cut to size using scissors. From each corner measure and mark 300mm and join with a line to form four triangles.

4 With one person working on each side, remove the Velcro backing paper, pull the sheet taut and fold over the sides at the same time; press onto sheet to attach. Tip: Work down the sides at the same pace to get even tension. Repeat for the top and base of the screen. Turn the feet back, stand the screen up and position in final location.

5 Cut a 6m length of rope, fold in half and thread through itself to attach to the top of the frame. Take each side in a V formation away from the frame and tie a moveable bowline knot in each end of the rope. Secure to the ground with tent pegs. Repeat for the other side and move the knots to ensure the frame is secure. Tip: Avoid using in windy weather. Dismantle and store when not in use.

3 Apply tape to lines and cut off triangle corners. Remove tape. Cut Velcro Sticky Back to length for the top, base and sides of the screen sheet. Peel off backing paper, stick Velcro to the edges, then attach the other half. Twist feet sideways and lay frame on the sheet.

LOW-FUSS FESTIVE PROJECTS

Twig ball lanterns Fashion on-trend rustic feature lights from humble garden cuttings! Select long, flexible branches and start by bending one to form a circle, securing the ends together with wire ties. Create another circle, and tie crossed over the first to begin the structure. Wrap and tie more branches around until you achieve a ball shape. Find the strongest point of the ball to attach hanging twine using firm knots. With the battery pack/switch at the top, run bead lights down the hanging twine and poke the rest of the lights into the ball structure. Timber triangle tree Turn pine into a Christmas tree with hooks for stringing decorations and lights. We used three 1200mm lengths of 140mm x 18mm dressed pine• and a compound mitre saw for cutting bevels by tilting the blade to match the angles. On two pine lengths, make the sides by cutting a 40° bevel at one end to form the top of the triangle. On one length, measure 1160mm to cut 25° at the other end (measure from the longest point of the cuts). Cut the other side to 1140mm. Butt the short side against the other, matching the top edges. To make the base, cut 25° at one end of the remaining pine, measure along 1000mm and repeat the cut. Assemble the triangle using woodworking adhesive and a nail gun with 32mm brads. Smooth over the nail holes with timber filler and leave to dry. Sand all over with 180grit abrasive paper and wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Apply two coats of Danish oil with a paintbrush, leaving to dry after each. Inside the triangle, mark six holes along one side and five on the other, staggering them closer together towards the top. Wrap painter’s tape 16mm from the end of a 3mm bit as a depth guide to predrill, then screw in 15mm cup hooks.

Magnolia garland Showcase the beauty of evergreen magnolia foliage in a glittering garland. Join branches using green PVC wire ties, then secure in position away from or above traffic areas, using fixings suitable for your structure. Thread bead and party lights through the foliage for night-time impact.

Clay ornaments Form unique decorations using air-dry clay. After rolling out to a 5mm thickness, cut shapes using cookie cutters and either form patterns freehand using a toothpick, or press real foliage into the surface. Punch hanging holes at the top using a straw, allow to dry for 24 hours, then they’re ready to string.

Stamped giftwrap Create botanical-themed wrapping paper using DIY stamps. Draw or trace flower, plant stem and leaf designs, cut adhesive-backed foam to these shapes and stick to craft coasters for easy handling. Use a mini roller and tray to apply paint to the foam shapes, then stamp onto rolls of kraft paper.

Taper candle holder Turn a simple piece of timber into a table centrepiece. Mark evenly spaced, staggered hole centres on a piece of 90mm x 32mm pine cut to the desired length (ours is 400mm). Make holes at the marked locations using a drill with 20mm spade bit, to 20mm deep. Sand the entire surface using 180-grit abrasive paper, then wipe away dust. Apply timber wax and insert 21mm taper candles into holes. Note: Never leave lit candles unattended and do not let them burn down below 5cm.

Ikebana Mason jars Convert preserve jars into vessels for ikebana – the Japanese art of arranging blossoms, branches and stems. Remove a Mason jar’s flat lid from the screw band, cut 12mm-square mesh to fit inside the band, then apply two coats of a self-priming metal spray paint to the outside. Once dry, screw back onto the waterfilled jar and arrange your flora.
