Most of us feel better when the house is tidy. Research suggests the drive to declutter and clean can be an anxiety-reducing activity, or an attempt to find balance and harmony. Quite simply, knowing where everything is saves time and angst. So if you don’t have a place for those items you use daily –from school bags to phone chargers and dog leads – now is an excellent time to get sorted.
DIY ideas this month include creative use of standard shelf systems and units to make bedroom, under-thestairs and mudroom storage (from page 14), plus a nifty conversion of a broom cupboard to a streamlined ‘drop zone’ that can hold the armfuls of bits and bobs scooped up from common areas. For outdoors, our buyer’s guide to shed and garage storage solutions (from page 51) offers a most satisfying way to spend a weekend. And once the tools are tidy, you’ll be primed to tackle an equally satisfying project: a quick paint update, a deep-cleaning task or perhaps an outdoor chair refurb (see ours, page 66).
February is all about fun for the family – little gardeners will love our feature plants (page 34) and the cute projects in the Activity Booklet (in the middle of the mag). Plus, sign up for Kids DIY workshops in stores this month and give the next generation a chance to learn new skills while having a ball along the way. Enjoy!

Looking for a creative way to boost bedroom storage, Bunnings Workshop community member Claire (@Renowayoflife) built a custom rack for toys and books that doubles as a nightlight. “I wanted to make a fun and engaging storage system for my son’s much-loved cars and trucks that could also hold a few books for bedtime reading,” says Claire. She cut leftover VJ panels into strips, then made cutouts using a router so the horizontal and vertical pieces could slot together. With the frame nailed into place, Claire made a face piece from another VJ panel. After sanding and filling the nail holes, she finished the job with primers and paints from the Dulux Duramax range. An LED light strip was cable-tied to the back of the frame and, in a fun touch, a toy truck glued to the base ‘tows’ its load. The rack is attached to the wall with angle brackets. View Claire’s handiwork and projects from other Workshop community members at workshop.bunnings.com.au.
Ease back into your routine with these personal assistants
Do you catch yourself squinting to see things at the back of the pantry? Can you never find what you’re looking for in the depths of the linen cupboard? Shed a bit of light on the situation by installing a battery-powered sensor light inside the dark area. Using a light that is sensitive to movement or shadow can save the battery – and the hassle of constantly switching it on and off.
What’s in your garden? Kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos).
Plant name: Big Skippy.
Climate: Coastal Balgowlah Heights in Sydney, which has lots of sea breezes.
Plant parent: Ray.
How long have you been caring for your plant? Four years.
Where did you get it? I grew it from a packet of seeds I got at Bunnings Balgowlah (where I’m usually found on a weekend).
Best feature: It is an eye-catching showpiece in our front garden that gives the native ‘noisy miner’ birds their breakfast every morning.
Care routine: I leave it alone!
Secret hack: Let the plant do all the work. Something that may surprise people about Big Skippy: I am 190cm (6' 3") and it’s much taller than me! Also, I think the red, green and gold colours are distinctly Australian.
When tackling a variety of tough stains, Gumption is like a Swiss army knife, essential to have on hand. The non-toxic multipurpose paste removes ingrained stains and dirt from a multitude of surfaces that ordinary cleaners can’t budge. Despite containing no harsh chemicals or bleaches, Gumption is effective on tough grease and grime, leaving behind only a fresh lemon scent. So next time you’re blitzing the house, don’t worry about lugging around an armful of cleaning aids. The Gumption formula can be safely used in every room, on surfaces like tiles, stainless steel sinks or cookware, ceramic and enamel cooktops, laminate benchtops, vinyl floors, fibreglass, hard plastics and other similar surfaces.

Late summer is about autumn prep, heat protection and pest control
Frangipani rust is prevalent in warm and humid conditions. Prune and bin the worst-affected leaves and spray with a suitable fungicide.
Get a head start on cool-season veg by sowing broccoli, cabbage and leeks now. In cooler areas, Brussels sprouts and parsnips can also go in. Improve the soil with compost or aged manure before sowing.
Watch out for lawn armyworm. In large numbers, they can decimate a lawn overnight. If spotted, treat with a lawn grub killer. Also, check leaves for egg clusters covered in a furry brown mass left by adult moths – sweep away to prevent the eggs hatching.
To encourage an autumn flush of blooms, prune roses – use clean, sharp secateurs and wipe between cuts. Apply a rose-specific fertiliser around the base of plants, water in well and top up mulch if needed.
As temperatures soar this month, protect your leafy greens and fruiting vegies by setting up shade cloths. Use star pickets or stakes to hold them in place, securing with cable ties or strong garden twine.
After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear; when pruning, also wear long sleeves, as the leaves and sap of some plants can be a skin irritant and/or cause allergic reactions. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.
There’s no time like summer to start preparing for a bumper winter crop!

These plants will thrive in those spots without sun
Redback native ginger (Alpinia caerulea)
A clumping perennial with dark-green leaves and reddish undersides. The shoots and roots are edible, with a mild ginger flavour.
Coral bells (Heuchera spp)
Vibrant foliage in shades ranging from deep purple to bright green. Mass plant in beds or along borders for impact.
Philodendron ‘Xanadu’ Forms a compact, bushy plant with glossy lobed leaves. Grow as a feature plant or group along borders and under trees.
Improve your pruning prowess with batterypowered secateurs. This tool makes clean, crisp cuts – up to 1000 per battery charge – on both green and tougher brown material, so you can use it all over the garden. ●

Streamline everyday life with off-the-rack storage systems that can grow with your family
As summer draws to a close, take an audit of your interiors to pinpoint clutter pain points in your home and create order for the year ahead. Wall-mounted strip storage can be easily reconfigured by moving shelf brackets, racks and rails to wherever they’re needed; cube systems are super simple to assemble and can be mixed and matched with an attractive range of inserts to suit any decor, while cabinets mounted on castors go with the flow.
Transform a blank wall with an artful storage solution that addresses wardrobe and study space in one. Open display can help to encourage a teen to be tidy, and it’s also a low-impact, flexible strategy for renters. Out-of-season clothes can be stowed in vacuum bags under the bed.

Use premade shelving, preprimed VJ-look panels and trim, cube units and paint for a result that looks completely bespoke!
1 Assemble two 2 x 2 cube units according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Measure from the skirting board to the top of the door frame. Use this measurement and the width of an assembled cube (760mm) to calculate the size of the wall panelling, using the manufacturer’s instructions regarding expansion allowances. Mark the VJ wall lining and cut two panels to size using a circular saw with a straightedge.
2 Install VJ panels according to the manufacturer’s instructions, fill nail holes with wood filler, let dry then sand smooth. Mask around VJ panels with painter’s tape then, using a medium paintbrush, apply two coats of interior acrylic paint, allowing to dry after each coat.
3 Following the manufacturer’s instructions, install two 1200mm floating shelves centred and flush with the top of the doorframe.
4 Following the manufacturer’s instructions, assemble two 760mm coat shelves and install at your preferred height on the VJ panels.
5 Measure from the skirting boards to the floating shelves, add 19mm, mark and cut two lengths of preprimed 19mm quad pine with mitred top ends. Measure the small spaces either side of the floating shelves at the top of the VJ panels, add 19mm, mark and cut two more pieces of quad pine with mitred outside ends. Sand cut ends and predrill nail holes at intervals using a 1mm bit.
6 Allowing for expansion, install quad pine against outside edges of the VJ panels using 40mm bullet-head nails. Use a nail punch to recess heads, fill nail holes with wood filler, let dry, then sand smooth. Mask around quad pine with painter’s tape then, using a small paintbrush, apply two coats of interior acrylic paint to pine, allowing to dry after each coat. Position cube units and add inserts.

Embrace the power of paint in your interiors for speedy, on-trend updates
Words Jane Parbury
There’s nothing like a coat of paint to give your spaces a whole new look in record time, whether you’re after a simple refresh or a complete change. The latest colours and finishes – and how they’re being used by interiors experts all over the world – are set to inspire you.
A big trend at last year’s interior design shows, colour – in tones about as far removed from wishy-washy as you can get – is firmly in the home-decorating spotlight. Experts have named deep burgundy, intense greens and earthy browns as key shades for 2025, inspired by nostalgic schemes from the past, nature and sustainability, and the desire to create spaces that are uniquely our own. Read on to find out more about how to pick the perfect hue.
Sun-kissed hues are a wonderfully effective way to add warmth and personality to interiors, advises Bunnings trend and design manager Jane Wright. “They are best used with neutral backdrops and natural materials to soften the effect,” she says. Or, if using stronger shades, try colour drenching – coating an entire room, doors and architectural trim included. Feature walls are a practical way to add colour to a space, says Dulux colour expert Andrea LucenaOrr. “However, to get the most out of colour, you can use your chosen hue on all four walls,” she adds.
We’re unlikely to completely ditch whites. Those with a hint of pigment are a safe choice for walls – look for an underlying touch of yellow or red for a warm feel (ideal for traditional homes) or try cool whites with a touch of black or blue in contemporary spaces. An on-trend white is a great way to add freshness and brightness to a space, says Mark O’Connor of Monarch Painting.
However, even in the neutral sphere, change is afoot, with warmer undertones taking over from cool whites and greyed-off tones, says Jane. “The trend is shifting towards warmer neutrals, with beige and biscuit tones making a strong comeback. These sandy, inviting hues add a sense of warmth, softness and cosiness,” she explains.
In its crispest format, white introduces light and delivers a fresh contrast, so if you want a bold look without going all in, paint architectural trims in a pure hue like Dulux Vivid White and walls in a mid-strength or deep shade. Or try teaming a soft white or neutral with a stronger colour for a more dramatic
look. The key is to pair hues with similar undertones (such as a touch of yellow or green). Make use of information provided by paint companies to help with palette planning.
“With some of the richer, bolder colours coming through the Dulux Colour Forecast 2025, you can easily scheme warmer neutrals and whites with these hues,” says Andrea. “If you are using Dulux Plum Sauce from the ‘Recollect’ palette, for example, try a warm white such as Dulux Whisper White. If you are looking at Dulux Pesto from the ‘Still’ palette, try scheming with a neutral such as Dulux Slight Mushroom.” Matt and low-sheen finishes are still popular on walls, while gloss is trending for furniture and some cabinetry, adds Andrea.
Paintwork has to withstand a lot in a family household, so pick the right paint for the job, such as an easycare formulation for high-traffic areas like hallways. For damp or humid spaces, including laundries, look for a specialist kitchen and bathroom paint that will inhibit mould growth. Where possible, opt for paints with low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These give off fewer toxic emissions, making them a better choice all round, but especially if you have kids, elderly family members or people with allergies or respiratory issues at home. Even so, you should always work in a well-ventilated area, let your paint project dry completely and air the room thoroughly before use.
Paint is an easy way to make a change. Here are a few ideas.
● Go for a whole new scheme. This is easier if you’re moving from a light colour to a fashionforward rich shade, not so much if it’s the other way around, as you’ll probably need more than two coats to prevent the darker shade showing through.
● Paint a feature wall, says Mark. “It’s a simple, quick way to bring a sense of class and elegance to a room – low on prep time but high on impact,” he says.
● Pull a mismatched array of furniture together by painting it in a soft white, or look for a vintage (non-antique) piece with good bones and coat it in a vibrant gloss for an on-trend, eye-catching feature.
● For a swift whole-room spruceup, touch up the walls in a white water-based low sheen and/or repaint the woodwork. “Applying a water-based enamel in white semi-gloss is an effective way to add style, freshness and longevity to your woodwork,” says Mark. “Water-based enamels are quick to dry and easy to clean, which is great for working on windows, door frames and skirting boards.”
● Jane’s tip for a room refresh: “Paint a ceiling in a colour that complements the wall tones for a unique look.” ●

A handy couple overhauled their outdated cottage to create a modern family home featuring DIY designer-look bathrooms
Words Artemis Gouros
After buying a fixer-upper in Ballarat, Victoria, in August 2020, first-time renovators
Tanya (Bunnings Workshop community member @TanyaLee) and partner Ian immediately set about turning the modest house into a stunning home.
family
Tanya, a Crossfit coach and personal trainer, and Ian, an electronics engineer, share their renovated Ballarat home with 14-year-old Wade, five-year-old Edison and three-year-old Everly.
Before they moved in, Tanya and Ian opened up the kitchen and created a much-needed third bedroom but it’s the bathroom revamps that really showcase their impressive DIY skills.
“In 2021, after receiving our permit, we added an extension for our master bedroom,” explains Tanya. “From there, we moved onto renovating the ensuite and the main bathroom.”
Doing most of the work themselves – apart from plumbing and tiling –the couple converted a dilapidated powder room and laundry into their elegant ensuite, then updated the main bathroom into a smart space complete with new laundry. “Before tackling any job, we would research ‘how to’ videos online – Bunnings was an excellent resource!“ says Tanya.
For a busy family with two littlies, Tanya wanted a main bathroom that was both functional and stylish.
✚ Shower/tub combo
✚ Feature tiles for bathtub, shower and recessed shelf
✚ Frameless shower screen
✚ New plasterboard walls
✚ Laundry area for washer/ dryer, sink and cabinetry
✚ Patterned floor tiles
“Renovating has been a fun and creative outlet – it’s very rewarding to see our vision take shape!”
Tanya/homeowner
RIGHT “Everything from the basins to bath, toilets to tapware, and plasterboard to paint was from Bunnings,” says Tanya
The same design principles – such as repeating patterns and limiting materials to create visual harmony – were used in both bathrooms but there are subtle differences. While the spaces share the same fixtures and fittings from tapware to toilets, the ensuite shower is all-white while the main bathroom is a cool blue. “The palette for our home was an earthy mix of blues, greens and natural tones, so I was very particular when choosing my paint colours, especially for the bathrooms,” says Tanya. “The team members at the Bunnings paint desk were very helpful.”
Touches of warmth and colour were introduced via the timber vanity tops and mirror frames, plus artworks and styling elements including plants, accessories and towels. And after the bathrooms were done, the remaining bedrooms, expanded kitchen and the living area had their turn at a makeover by the DIY duo.
“What started as a two-bedroom, one-bathroom house is now our beautiful four-bedroom, twobathroom home,” says Tanya. “It took us three steady years to complete, one weekend at a time, but it was worth every minute!”

Sunflowers are the happy faces of the garden
Venus flytraps are triggered by movement – so keep those little fingers out!
SUNFLOWER (Helianthus annuus)
Growing this cheerful annual is a fun activity for kids, especially when you turn it into a friendly competition to see who can grow the biggest – they can reach heights in excess of 3m and produce flowers more than 30cm wide! Depending on the variety, blooms range from yellow to bronze, orange, red and purple. Dwarf forms that grow to less than a metre are also available.
VENUS FLYTRAP (Dionaea muscipula)
A plant considered by Charles Darwin to be “one of the most wonderful in the world”*, this fascinating carnivorous species has leaves or ‘traps’ like little jaws that snap shut when its insect prey enters. It makes a great indoor plant on a brightly lit windowsill or outdoors in a spot that gets morning sun. Sit it in a saucer of water to keep the potting mix moist.
LAMB’S EAR (Stachys byzantina)
Budding gardeners will love touching the soft, velvety leaves of this perennial groundcover. Tall flower spikes open to reveal small pink or purple blooms over spring and summer. It grows across most climates, but can be prone to fungal problems in areas of high humidity. Position in full sun to part shade in free-draining soil.
AIR PLANTS (Tillandsia spp)
These quirky plants don’t need soil to grow, and can be attached to almost anything, making them a cool project for the little ones. Nestled in shells, hung on trees, glued to crystals or suspended from string – these are just a few ways to grow them. To thrive, they need good airflow, bright but diffused light and a regular immersion in water, allowing them to dry off between. ●

Keep in mind…
■ While doing craft projects with children, make sure they have constant adult supervision.
■ When using a hot-glue gun, wear eye protection and a mask, work in a well-ventilated area, then place the appliance on its stand after use and allow it to cool down before storage. Do not leave unattended while in use or directly after use.
■ Take care when selecting plants, as some can be poisonous to children and pets. Wear a mask when handling potting mix.
■ Keep craft, gardening and food utensils separate.
When is a box not a box? The day it turns into a cool new thing. These projects require one large box and a little imagination
HOW TO Create a magical hideout with a colourful cubby. You’ll need a couple of large appliance boxes for the house, roof and stable door, plus a hot-glue gun to stick it together (grown-ups only!). Reinforce the house with extra cardboard, add a window box, then let the kids decorate it with colourful paper, faux flowers and a tea towel for a curtain!
BUILD A KITCHEN
HOW TO Play kitchens provide hours of fun and so does making one! Help the kids cut out utensils, pots and pans, then dig out some tape or glue to assemble them. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can make an oven or washing machine, too. You’ll need a craft knife for the doors and windows (keep away from small fingers!), a texta and a bit of patience!
PICK UP A KIT
HOW TO If you don’t have many art and craft supplies to hand at home, a creative DIY craft kit could be just the thing for you and the kids. The only object you’ll need to dig out is a cardboard box as the kit contains all the tools and materials you need to fashion your cardboard creations! I-Create ‘Brainstormer’ kit, $39.90, I/N: 0673573‡ .
Dip a digit (or a brush) into this homemade paint and brighten up an afternoon
● 4 heaped tbsp cornflour
● Boiling water straight from the kettle
● Food colourings
HOW TO Put the cornflour in a large heatproof bowl and mix in a little cold water from the tap to make a thick, smooth paste. Slowly pour in the boiling water (a job for grown-ups!) while whisking the mixture. The paste will thicken so keep going until you reach a consistency you like. You can leave it white or add in food colouring to separate bowls of paste to make various different colours. The kids will especially love this bit! Then grab some paper and get painting. This is a great activity for outdoors as it can get messy!
HOW TO This is a great project the kids can do by themselves! First, take a handful of air-dry clay and shape it into any creature you fancy. It could be an animal or a monster! Use your hands to mould the clay into a head, body, arms and legs, and any other extras you like!
HOW TO Once you’re happy with your creature’s shape, it’s time to decorate!
can add googly eyes and pipe cleaners to make wings, ears, feet, or arms and legs if you didn’t make them from the clay. Have fun making it look unique! Set aside to dry before painting.
TO Now grab some acrylic paints (or ask a grown-up to find them) and make your creature colourful. Add spots, stripes or give it a funny face! Then pop your creation in a foil tray and let it dry completely – it may take a few hours. Then it’s ready to play or display!
HOW TO Give personality to plain plastic pots using permanent markers. Go freehand or sketch a fun face design on first with a soft lead pencil. Older kids could upcycle old terracotta pots: scrub clean with warm soapy water, leave to dry completely then apply a terracotta sealer inside and outside the pot. When dry, use a paintbrush, acrylic paint and your imagination to decorate! Draw flower shape outlines then fill in, dab on dots or use painter’s tape to mask off bands for stripes or geometric patterns.
HOW TO Fresh herbs add fabulous flavour to many foods. And you can watch them grow up inside these mini greenhouses. Sow herb seeds (try parsley, oregano and chives) in seed-raising mix in small pots, add a handmade label, lightly water the soil and cover with a trimmed clear plastic bottle. The air inside the bottle stays warm and retains moisture, which will drip onto the soil. When seeds have sprouted and grown into sturdy seedlings, transplant into larger pots. Use the tasty leaves in pasta sauces, on pizzas or in savoury muffins.
HOW TO Egg shells make great plant starters. Carefully crack large eggs in half, wash the empty shells and, using a toothpick, gently pierce a hole through the inside of each base for drainage. Place in an egg carton, scoop in seedraising mix, then push in a seed. Moisten with a spray of water, put in a sunny spot and wait for little green shoots to appear! Hint: Sunflower and bean seeds sprout quickly and you can pop the seedling, inside its eggshell, straight into the garden or vegie patch outside.

A healthy backyard chicken is a fine sight: bright, clear eyes, glossy feathers and a brilliant red, firm comb. To keep your chooks in peak condition, follow these tips.
Cleanliness is key Provide fresh water every day and keep their coop dry and free of droppings. Apply mite oil to wooden perches every month.
Ensure your animal’s dry food stays at its best with correct storage. To maintain freshness, keep it in its original packaging, inside an airtight plastic or metal bin. If decanting, use a small, washable container and don’t mix old and new food. Keep in a cool, dry environment (not on the garage floor or outside), and away from household cleaners and chemicals. Here are a few options. Giant storage Look for super-sized washable bins with airtight (and pest- and puppy-proof) lids, in a size to accommodate your preferred kibble purchase. Dedicated pet storage often has a handy scoop, too.
Store and serve Smart pet feeders not only hold several litres of food, they also dispense it in controlled portions and even alert your smartphone when your pet has been fed! On display For visible storage, choose a beautiful glass jar. This can also be a good reminder to hand out a daily dental chew, or grab training treats on the way out.
Think outside the box Pull-out bins and laundry hampers can also be used to store giant kibble bags out of sight, while plastic tubs are ideal for mixing feed for horses.
Treat mites Dust baths are great for minimising lice and mites. However, if you notice mites, it’s time to apply a delouse powder (some can be added to their dust bath) and do an extrathorough clean of the coop. Worm chooks twice a year If your chooks lay, choose a wormer that is safe for egg consumption. Natural preventatives include a splash of apple cider vinegar and ground-up garlic in their water or adding diatomaceous earth (DE) to their feed. Watch out for ill-health signs A drooping tail, dirty feathers, irregular breathing or a general lacklustre approach to life mean a visit to the vet is needed.

Before you open your heart and home to a kitty cat, check out this 101 guide to getting started
About to give in to being smitten by a kitten? First, take a few steps to prepare yourself and your home. Your feline friendship could last up to 20 years, and here’s the purrfect way to launch it.
Kittens are hardwired for mischief, so you need to make sure your home is prepared to ensure their safety –and that of your delicate treasures! PetRescue adoption support representative Bryony Copeland has the following advice.
● Block access to dangerous items such as medicines, cleaning products and baits, and check your indoor plants aren’t toxic to cats.
● Secure electrical and curtain cords, and pack away any fragile items such as vases.
● Keep toilet lids down (kittens can
fall in!) and make sure your doors and window screens are secure to prevent escape.
Entering a new home is overwhelming for your kitten, so it’s important to set them up in a quiet zone. “This
There are several benefits to adopting an adult cat. For example, they have already developed their unique personality, so you’ll know about any quirks to bear in mind as their new guardian. Older cats can take a bit more time than kittens to adjust to a new home, but be patient and give them plenty of space to decompress and soon you’ll both be ‘feel-ine’ fine!
should be a safe space with all their essentials: two litter trays, food, water and a comfy bed,” says Bryony. “Let them explore at their own pace. Avoid introducing them to the whole house too quickly. Start with one room and gradually expand their territory.”
Similarly, introductions to outside should be gradual. “If your kitten will go outdoors, keep them inside for a few weeks to help them bond with their new home first. When they’re ready, supervise their first trips outside to keep them safe,” says Bryony.
Frequent but low-intensity interactions where the cat has control are key. Let them decide when to engage by calling them over or offering a hand. Kittens, in particular, benefit from gentle handling by multiple people while they’re young to help them develop trust. Spend time playing with your kitten so they can burn off energy and create a connection with you.

Hack a sideboard to create a hidden litter station for your furry friend
Cats have a reputation for being clean and selfpossessed, so give yours a private place to do their business! Cut an access hole in the side of a cabinet and place a litter tray inside. By concealing their toileting spot you also eliminate the sight – and reduce the scent – of an active litter tray. You can use any piece of furniture as long as it has the depth and height for your cat to comfortably use the facilities, but choose solid timber, not chipboard, for ease of cutting.
Tools & materials
n Safety equipment (mask, gloves, and eye and ear protection)
n Tape measure and pencil
n 20cm plate
n Drill with 10mm bit
n Jigsaw
n 80-grit sandpaper
n Lint-free cloth
n Scissors
n Preloved cabinet
n Rubber channel or foam protector
n Litter tray
n Adhesive hooks
n Litter scoop
n Waste bags
1 On a side panel of the cabinet, mark a 23cm high by 20cm wide rectangle about 15cm from the base (see ‘Measuring your cat’, top right). Use a 20cm round plate to draw the curve at the top.
2 Make a starter hole with a drill and 10mm bit, then use a jigsaw to cut out the arch shape. Sand cut edges and wipe away dust.
3 Install rubber channel or foam seal around the cutout, trimming to fit with scissors.
4 Position the litter tray inside the cabinet, and hang a scoop and waste bags on the back wall using hooks. Tip: To make cleaning easier, trim a cat litter mat to fit the base of cabinet. ●
MEASURING YOUR CAT
Our access hole is larger than standard cat flaps. To calculate an adequate-sized opening for your pet, measure the widest part of the cat – the chest or hips – then add 2cm-5cm. For the height, measure from the top of the shoulders to the bottom of the chest or belly, whichever is the largest part, then add 2cm5cm. To check height clearance, measure from the floor to the cat’s belly.
■ When using power tools, always wear safety gear (such as gloves, mask, and eye and ear protection), follow the manufacturer’s instructions and work in a well-ventilated area.

Farewell the hot season and get ready to welcome the next with these garden must-dos
With the end of summer approaching, it’s time to give your garden a little attention to help it along and prepare for the new season’s plantings. Simple steps like weeding, pruning and mulching can make a world of difference in refreshing and renewing your outdoor growing spaces.
Start by lightly pruning flowering perennials and shrubs. Horticulturist Steve Falcioni (@the_plant_addict) says a little trim removes spent blooms and keeps them tidy. For some plants, such as roses and geraniums, this can stimulate another flush of flowers in a few weeks. “Don’t forget to give them an organic fertiliser to help them along,” says Steve. You can also extend the life of summer annuals and vegetables by giving them a liquid feed. “However, if they are already on their last legs, pull them out to make way for autumn plantings,” advises Steve. Add removed healthy plants to the compost heap but, if any show signs of pests or diseases, bin them to prevent their spread.
Weeds have evolved to grow fast and spread quickly, so it’s essential to stay on top of them. “If you only have a few weeds, they can be hand-pulled without too much effort,” says Steve. A hand weeder tool is useful for prying out the whole weed, roots and all. “For larger areas, spraying is easier,” he says. “Consider using an organic option, especially around the vegie patch.” Also, take a moment to check the lawn for weeds. Gen Bailey of Scotts suggests using a selective herbicide to tackle weeds. “This targets them without harming the grass,” she says. “Keeping lawns well fed helps to keep weeds out – apply a lawn fertiliser now to encourage thick lush growth through autumn.” Alternatively, save time and effort with ‘weed and feed’ products, which kill most common weeds in your lawn while feeding grass.
Cooler temperatures are on the way, but there are still a few weeks of hot weather ahead. “It’s a good reminder to be efficient with watering,” says Steve. “When hand-watering, ensure the hose has a trigger nozzle so water only runs when the trigger is pressed.” On small areas or pots, he suggests using a watering can for targeted hydration with minimal waste. Apply a naturally derived mulch over the soil and around the vegie garden to help conserve soil moisture and suppress weed growth. “Fine mulches like lucerne or pea straw are ideal in the vegie patch as they break down over six months, adding nutrients to the soil,” explains Steve.
The best way to set up your next cool-season crop for success is to add organic matter to the soil, like compost and pelletised manures, says Gen. “You can find options that have organics and controlled-release fertilisers combined, which leads to better plant growth as they feed and improve the soil,” she says.
Don’t be afraid to lightly prune roses – at this stage they’re quite forgiving and any mistakes can be corrected later
Soil health can also be boosted by growing a green manure crop. Steve Falcioni recommends sowing legumes like peas and broad beans, rye grass or lucerne into your garden bed. “Cut them back before they flower or set seed, and then dig them into the soil,” he says. This adds valuable nutrients, enriching the soil for future plantings.
Late summer to early autumn is the perfect time to start planting for autumn, says Steve. “Sow into punnets and position in a warm protected spot until seedlings are ready to be transplanted,” he says. However, some plants prefer to be sown directly into the garden. “Carrots, radishes and larkspur flowers hate root disturbance, so sow seeds in their final growing spot,” says Steve. A hand trowel is ideal for loosening soil and digging small planting holes or trenches.

If you’ve found yourself with an abundance of the last of your summer herbs, don’t let them go to waste. Instead, dry them for use throughout the year.
“To air-dry, bundle the last of your fresh herbs in small groups, tie them with string, and hang them upside down in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight,” says Gen Bailey. “After a week or so, they should be dry and crumbly.”
You can also dry herbs in the microwave or air fryer. In the microwave, use a low setting and heat in 30-60 second bursts, turning the herbs until dry. For an air fryer, spread the herbs in the tray, weigh them down with a rack, and set to 100°C, checking every few minutes until dry.
Once your herbs are fully dried, crush them and store in airtight containers in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight for long-lasting flavour. ●
Swap hand watering your garden for more free time by installing a wi-fi-enabled tap timer from Holman
Love your garden and want to ensure it thrives this summer? A simple tap timer can set up a basic watering schedule, but the Holman wi-fi-enabled watering system is a smarter solution, providing more convenience and control.
Drip irrigation is one of the most efficient ways to water your garden. With drip lines installed around your yard to deliver water directly to each plant’s roots, not a drop is wasted. Connecting a drip irrigation system to a Holman WX1 Tap Timer and Wi-Fi Hub takes it one step further, automating your watering schedule so you can set and forget.
In a garden where there’s a variety of plant types, such as grass, flowers,
vegetables and hedging, it can be difficult to ensure each one gets the right amount of water. Setting up multiple watering systems is simple with a Holman WX2 Dual Outlet Tap Timer and Wi-Fi Hub
The dual outlet allows you to connect two timers to one tap, so that you can have one for a drip irrigation system, for example, and another for lawn sprinklers. Both timers are then connected to the wi-fi hub, which is controlled through your smartphone. This convenient feature allows you to set up separate watering schedules and adjust them as necessary, like if a sudden shower or heatwave hits, all with a tap on the app.
The Holman app monitors water usage from the tap timers, too, while soil moisture levels can be monitored through the Holman Smart Moisture Sensor. You can then adjust your systems and schedules to get the best results for your garden, while still conserving water and providing peace of mind.
This single wi-fi hub is included with the WX1 and the WX2, and can support up to four tap timers
End the social season on an organisational high, with a summer cleaning and maintenance blitz
Words Shelley Tustin
As the sun starts to set on the last days of summer, it’s the ideal time for a seasonal spruce-up! After weeks of entertaining, hot and dusty days, and (hopefully) more time relaxing in the backyard than working on it, your home might be showing signs of hard use, inside and out. Take the opportunity to deep clean selected spaces, get up to date with maintenance jobs and end the summer with everything in order.
Clean windows make a home sparkle. Though not everyone’s favourite task, there are ways to make the job easier. Hose-end outdoor glass cleaning solutions (like 30 Seconds or Glitz) spray on and rinse off without scrubbing, and are ideal for hardto-reach windows. Window vacuums can be used inside and out for a fast and effective clean – finish with a microfibre cloth, if needed, and you’ll have a streak-free result in minutes. Give blinds and shutters a wipe with a damp microfibre cloth. For flyscreens, cleaning and organising expert Chantel Mila Ibbotson (@mama_mila_au) recommends brushing off cobwebs and loose dirt with a broom, then using a squeegee to apply a mix of 4 cups water, 1 cup white cleaning vinegar and 1/2 cup dishwashing liquid. After applying the mix, close your doors and windows and gently hose it off. Door tracks may be clogged with sand and debris by summer’s end, adds Chantel. If your vacuum’s nozzle attachments are not thin enough to clean these, she says a simple trick is to get an empty toilet roll tube, tape it to the end of the handheld attachment on your vacuum and squeeze the tube to fit into the tight crevices as you vacuum.
Fans and airconditioning units have been keeping you comfortable all summer – it’s now time to return the favour with a little TLC. Gently dust or vacuum fan blades and the motor cover, then wipe the blades with a damp microfibre cloth to remove the last of the dust and, in the case of outdoor fans in coastal areas, salt particles that can corrode the metal. Check your fans are working well and properly balanced, and call in an electrician if they need attention. Airconditioning filters also need cleaning – ideally at least every three months. Bunnings electrical buyer John Campbell advises removing and vacuuming the filters or, if they’re really grimy, running them under a tap. Make sure they are completely dry before putting them back in place. Outside, make sure the airconditioning unit is
Clean aircon filters regularly to ensure optimum performance clear of garden growth or debris, but leave all maintenance of the exterior unit to the pros. “Be aware of the airconditioning output – if the aircon is producing non-cooled air, a top up of the refrigerant may be required,” says John. This and all other maintenance should be left to the experts. “Given the 240-volt nature and the highly sensitive parts, it’s not recommended to open the compressor or the head unit, unless qualified,” adds John.
It’s likely been the centre of festivities all summer, so your deck has earned some much-needed attention. Give it a good sweep to start, then apply a specialist deck-cleaning detergent and scrub with a stiff-bristle brush –or save yourself the time and elbow grease by using a power scrubber, then rinse clean with the hose. If your deck wasn’t re-stained or oiled at the beginning of the season, it might be a good idea to do it now, so the timber is nourished and protected before the cooler weather starts. Once the deck is clean and re-oiled (if applicable), replace the furniture. Consider moving things around, particularly pots, to avoid uneven fading or staining of the timber.
Get your place looking spick and span inside and out with products that are designed to banish dirt and grime in a flash – and with minimum elbow grease!

Check which other outdoor areas need attention. Paths, pavers and driveways often see extra traffic over summer, which might have left them grubby. A pressure washer makes short work of these – but trial the settings first to avoid damaging the surface, starting in an inconspicuous area. Your home’s facade may also need a good clean. The Ryobi telescopic power scrubber is an excellent tool for the task, allowing you to easily reach exterior walls. Katie Hollow of Ryobi says the tool can be used on surfaces including timber and painted weatherboard, but says it’s important to choose the correct accessory for the application, depending on the condition of the surface. The medium-bristle brush should be good for weatherboard, but a softer brush is recommended for more delicate areas and glass. “Read all instruction manuals and it’s advisable to do a test on a small area first,” says Katie.
Cars, caravans and boats all get a workout over summer and need deep cleaning to remove all the dust and salt spray they gathered on your adventures. A power scrubber will make light work of cleaning these big vehicles. The Ryobi power scrubber can be used with microfibre attachments for a gentle but effective clean. To enhance the shine, finish with a lambswool buffing pad attachment.
Vehicles often wear the evidence of a day at the beach on the inside, too. “You can get sand out of car mats with a broom or stiff-bristle brush to dislodge embedded particles, then vacuum,” says Chantel.
When it comes to car care over summer, the worst offender is sunblock. The chemicals in sunscreen can be brutal on your car’s interior and exterior surfaces and, if left, may permanently damage the paint. Wash your car regularly and if you see sunscreen marks, address them immediately and instruct the kids to watch where they put their sticky hands!
A season of open windows and doors may also have left its mark on your interiors. Sweep away corner cobwebs with an extendable duster and wash dusty and fly-spotted walls with a damp microfibre cloth or flat mop. Or you can solve both problems fast with a telescopic power scrubber, using a soft-bristle head for cobwebs and a microfibre pad for painted surfaces.
For dealing with greasy sunscreen fingerprints that might be blemishing your windows, door handles, light switches and walls, Chantel recommends using dishwashing detergent. “Simply make a mix of dishwashing liquid and water and wipe it across fingerprint marks,” she says. “The oil-dissolving capabilities of the dishwashing liquid help cut through greasy sunscreen marks.” ●

Pizza dough
MAKES 2 THIN BASES OR 1 THICK
n 2 cups bread and pizza flour, plus extra for dusting (see tip) n 7g sachet dry yeast n 1 tsp caster sugar
n ½ tsp salt
n ¾-1 cup warm water
n 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for greasing
1 Sift the flour into a large bowl, then stir in the yeast, sugar and salt. Add ¾ cup warm water and the oil and mix to form a soft dough. Add extra water if too dry. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
2 Put the dough into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and rest in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
3 Prepare and preheat a pizza oven according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or place a pizza stone in the oven and preheat to 220°C fan-forced (240°C conventional).
4 Punch down the dough, turn out onto a floured surface and shape into a ball without overworking. Cut the dough in half for 2 thin bases or leave whole for a thick base. (Make double quantity of dough to make 2 thick-base pizzas.) Dust a pizza peel or a large oven tray with flour.
5 Roll out 2 pieces of dough on a lightly floured surface to 25cm rounds for thin crust or the whole dough to 32cm for thick crust.
6 Once assembled with toppings, use the peel to slide the pizzas onto the hot floor in the pizza oven and cook for about 4 minutes or until crisp on the base, golden and bubbling. Or put the pizzas on prepared oven trays and cook in the oven for 6 minutes to firm up the base, then loosen and slide the pizza onto a hot pizza stone in the oven for a further 12 minutes to finish baking, for a crisp crust.
Tip: Bread and pizza flour is available from supermarkets. Substitute with gluten-free plain or bread flour if necessary.

Source the right storage to organise your shed or garage – and your projects
Words Jane Parbury
Aplace for everything and everything in its place is particularly important when you have lots of essential DIY, gardening and other stuff to house, and limited room in your shed or garage. Well-planned storage not only prevents your space from becoming a hot mess, it will also help you locate the right item, just when you need it.
Start with sturdy shelving, which lets you see your tools and supplies at a glance. Look for racks that can snugly fit the height and width of your walls. Modular systems are particularly useful, explains Paula Jermenis from Flexi Storage. “A modular set-up allows you to expand or reconfigure your storage as your needs change,” she says. Lidded plastic containers will help keep dust and moisture at bay. A mobile tool chest that can be wheeled out or tucked away as needed could also be handy, especially for DIYers. Look for a product with different-sized drawers to accommodate everything
“The key to maximising space in your shed or garage is to go vertical, making the most of your walls“
Lachlan King/Rack It
from fasteners to power tools, and try adding drawer inserts – cutlery trays can work well – for top-notch organisational impact.
Large equipment, such as shovels, rakes and hoses, takes up a lot of space, says interior designer Jordana Thirlwall, co-founder of Super Easy Storage. “Consider vertical pegboards or a mounted rack, with hooks that keep tools separated when hung,” she says. “Try installing smaller shelves above or below the rack for items such as gloves or a watering can.” Pegboards are also a practical way to store items you use often.
For quick and convenient retrieval, Lachlan King of Rack It suggests grouping tools like saws, drills or shears on the pegboard.
Consider the ceiling or roof space to house infrequently used items. “Bulky items that take up a lot of room, like ladders and seasonal DIY supplies, are best stored overhead,” says Jordana. “Ceiling racks and hooks can hold items securely, ensuring they’re safe but accessible when needed.” Hooks on walls are a highly effective weapon in your storage armoury, too – they come in a range of sizes for everything from outerwear to bikes. Just check
that both the hook and surface you’re planning to attach it to can support the weight of what you want to hang.
Clear containers or recycled jars are ideal for small items like seeds and plant labels, says Jordana. She also recommends wall-mounted pockets for miscellaneous supplies such as plant ties and small pots.
“Consider hanging a fabric or clear plastic wall organiser, with pockets labelled for each item type,” she says. Placed near or on the shed door, these can be handy for items that are used frequently, like garden gloves or small hand tools.
Keep little bits – such as nails and screws – organised yet accessible in drawers or small, clear, labelled storage bins, recommends Paula. “Don’t overlook small or awkward spaces like the back of doors,” she adds. “Install wall-mounted hooks or pegboards to maximise these areas while keeping your floor clear.”
Safe storage of certain items is essential. “Hazardous materials such as chemicals, pesticides and paints should be stored in ventilated, lockable cabinets to prevent spills and reduce exposure to harmful fumes,” says Lachlan. He suggests keeping power tools and lithium-ion batteries in lockable storage units to ensure they are secure and out of reach of children. “Lithium batteries, in particular, should be stored in a cool, dry place to reduce the risk of overheating or fire hazards,” he says.
A power tool storage station, set up near a power point, can be a useful place to keep frequently used power tools and batteries. Follow the manufacturer’s safety guidelines for charging your items, and always disconnect tools from chargers once they’re charged to the recommended level or when they’re not in use. Never leave tools or batteries on chargers indefinitely or unsupervised.
1
“For tools you use frequently, a magnetic strip mounted on the wall is a fantastic storage solution,” says Jordana.
2
“Install hooks or baskets underneath shelves to create extra storage for lightweight items like spray cans, gloves or tape rolls,” suggests Paula. “This can make good use of otherwise wasted vertical space.”
3
“Cut short sections of PVC pipe and mount them vertically on a wall to create holders for items like screwdrivers, hammers or garden tools,” says Lachlan.
4
“For narrow sheds or tight spaces, look into installing sliding panels that can hold tools and supplies on both sides,” says Jordana. “These panels function like a rolling wall, allowing you to pull out sections as needed.”

Sanding is an essential step in many home-maintenance and DIY jobs, from revamping old furniture to prepping surfaces such as a deck or wall for a finish. And when you match the sander to the task, you can achieve professional results with ease. Mason Sugars from Ozito advises DIYers to first decide on the right sander type, such as belt or detail, then focus on useful features such as speed control to suit their project needs.
Designed for timber, finishing sanders are ideal for getting a smooth finish on large flat surfaces such as doors or tables, as they feature rectangular sanding pads that can get right up to the edges of the workpiece. This tool is handy for small jobs or to use in between coats of varnish.
Fine finish
A versatile option for simple sanding tasks
Compact and designed for precision, detail and palm sanders feature a triangular base that allows you to get into tight spots. Daniel Gibney, Bunnings power tools national buyer, says their smaller surface area and pointed pad make detail sanders well suited for work on furniture and intricate areas. They are also good for sanding bannisters or window frames.
Polishers can double as sanders, especially handy when working on surfaces like wooden furniture or car panels. By switching to a fine grit, you can use a polisher to sand as well as buff. With the ability to provide a professionalgrade finish, a polisher is a versatile addition for any serious DIYer who needs both sanding and polishing capabilities.
Specifically designed to handle plasterboard, drywall sanders are essential for removing imperfections and preparing for painting. Choose a model with a long handle when working on walls and ceilings. An extraction system is essential to keep the work area dust-free. There are models that can also be used on timber or to remove leftover wallpaper or loose plaster.
When you need to remove a lot of material fast, a belt sander is the go-to tool. With a continuous loop of paper, these sanders quickly strip away layers. They are particularly effective for heavyduty sanding on big surfaces. “A belt sander has a larger surface area for sanding, making it a great choice for broad, flat surfaces like a kitchen benchtop,” says Daniel. ●
For precise or delicate sanding tasks, file sanders are excellent for hard-to-reach spots and fine edges, allowing you to shape, smooth and contour detailed areas of your woodwork and metalwork projects. They are also handy for DIY and maintenance work, as they can be used to deburr metal, remove paint and rust, sharpen tool blades and much more.
Random orbital sanders are a popular choice for versatility. Their round pads spin and oscillate, reducing the risk of swirl marks and providing a smooth finish on larger surfaces. If you’re tackling big projects like doors, tables or walls, they offer both power and control – perfect for a variety of tasks.

Feeling the pinch? Ease the household budget with these savvy strategies

Find savings at major retailers using cashback apps or discounted gift cards. Seasoned bargain hunter Stacie Mckee (@budget_save_spend) says these are often available through insurance companies and unions. “Then stack them with Flybuys offers and weekly specials for more savings,” Stacie says. To further cut spending, she suggests shopping at meat/grocery factory outlets, taking advantage of pricematching policies and negotiating better rates with utility providers.
Australians spend an average of $1,261 a year* on services they no longer use, according to Melissa Browne of the My Financial Adulting Plan program. “Plug the leaky holes in your expenses by using smart tech like smart plugs, thermostats, sensors or light globes to reduce electricity wastage,” advises Melissa. “Also review monthly expenses to see what you can swap, pause or cancel.”
Avoid impulse food buys and takeaway temptation by menu planning, shopping to a list, then cooking and freezing. “Build up a stockpile of different options by freezing leftover meal portions –this way you’re not eating the same thing every night,” suggests Stacie. Be sure to include a few quick-defrost options so you’re less tempted to order in when hunger strikes. “This could be budget cuts of steak or a pizza,” says Stacie.
Clutter can be a huge money waster – replacing items you can’t find adds to your costs, says Amy Revell from The Art of Decluttering. The solution is to ditch the things you no longer need or use. “Get rid of out-ofdate pantry items and invest in inexpensive baskets or containers to group like items, such as baking ingredients, together,” she advises. “Also, declutter your wardrobe so you’re only keeping clothes you love, wear and feel great in.” Consider selling unwanted items to free up some cash for living expenses or to pay off credit cards, says Melissa.
Banish summer electricity-bill dread by slashing cooling costs. “Use a ceiling fan rather than an airconditioner whenever you can, as it costs a fraction of the cost to run,” says Stacie. “Only cool the rooms you’re actually using, and consider adding blackout or insulating blinds to windows that get the brunt of the heat.” Also top up or upgrade insulation in your walls and roof space to boost energy efficiency.

GROW YOUR OWN
Homegrown fruit and veg can be a big money saver. “A single packet of carrot seeds costs the same as a bunch of carrots at the supermarket, and can yield hundreds of carrots,” says Bunnings Greenlife buyer, Victoria, Mill Wallasvaara**. Her tips for success – especially if you’re new to gardening –are to know your garden’s soil type and microclimate, read seed packets carefully and choose easy-grow, low-maintenance veg such as silverbeet, capsicums, lettuce, parsley and spring onions. ●

1 On both sheets of plywood, draw a straight line 450mm in from one long side. Using the straightedge as a guide, cut the ply with a circular saw. Draw a straight line 1000mm down from the top of each piece and cut with a circular saw to create two 1000mm x 450mm panels. Sand cut edges.
3 Attach the self-adhesive cork sheet to the rubber by ensuring that the corners of the cork sheet are square at the top. As you roll the cork out, peel away the backing paper, smoothing as you go with your hands or a straightedge to prevent air bubbles.
5 Use a mitre saw to cut two 456mm and two 1006mm lengths of aluminium angle with mitred ends. Sand cut edges. Arrange frame pieces on the rear of the backing board. Mark 20mm from all corners, use a 3mm countersink bit to drill holes at 200mm intervals and attach frame with 8G screws.
2 Use a utility knife and straightedge to cut the rubber tile to the same size as the ply panels. Use a sausage caulking gun to run a generous bead of flooring adhesive on one panel, then lay the tile on top. Place scrap ply and weights on the rubber to apply even pressure while the adhesive cures.

Tie a string to a pencil, place it on centre of top line, pull taut, tie to the nail and draw an arc. Make a starter hole with a 10mm bit, cut the arch with a jigsaw; sand cut edges.

Turn your broom cupboard into a handy hold-all

You’ll blitz the five-minute tidy up with this behind-closed-door drop zone – a central place to stash the family’s bits and bobs. And an old-school broom or linen cupboard is just the right size. To maximise the vertical space, wall-mounted wire baskets are an easy DIY solution. Make custom liners to minimise visual clutter and prevent smaller items slipping out. Cut and stitch a canvas drop sheet in minutes (see right), or use white cloth tape for a no-sew option. Mount the baskets any way you like, such as with brackets or battens – just be sure to use the correct fixings for your wall type that are rated to take the weight of the filled baskets. For hanging lightweight items, painted hook racks look good and work well. And a metal plant stand (see full image, page 21) is ideal for holding pet supplies – spraypaint it to suit your scheme.

Keep in mind
■ When painting, always wear eye protection, a mask and gloves, and work in a well-ventilated area.
■ Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
Our basket base measured 535mm x 205mm x 185mm (the top is wider)
1 DIVIDE A DROP SHEET
Cut a 3.6m x 1.5m canvas drop sheet into thirds, each piece 1.5m x 1.2m.
2 MARK PATTERN
Lay a canvas piece wrong side up on a flat surface and place basket in centre. Mark base corners with pencil, then pull canvas taut up and over each side of basket, marking a 30mm overhang on all sides. (If sewing liner, add a seam allowance of 20mm to all sides.)
Remove basket, lay canvas flat and join marks using a ruler and pencil.
3 CUT FABRIC
Cut out the pattern and use it as a template for the other two pieces.
4 FORM LINER
Sew seams or apply cloth tape. If sewing, zigzag stitch top edges to prevent fraying. If using cloth tape, also apply to outside edges to reinforce liner. Turn liner right side out and insert in basket with top folded over. ● Some advertised services and products are not available at some Bunnings stores, but products can be ordered.

To create a woven effect like ours on the chair back, loop the warp (vertical) rope multiple times around the frame in between full-length wraps. If your chair back has no base bar, complete the weft (horizontal) rope first – the bottom few rows of rope will act as your base bar instead.

Outdoor chairs are exposed to the elements year-round, which inevitably leads metal to rust and seats made of synthetic cord to crack and come loose. Reviving a tired chair is as straightforward as giving it a fresh paint job, then stringing a new seat from budget-friendly polypropylene safety rope using a basic weaving technique.

● Dy-Mark ‘MetalPro’ rust converter spray, $18.88/350g, I/N: 0317989 Pick it up! Reacts with rust to seal the surface before painting
Keep in mind
■ When spray-painting, wear eye protection, a mask and gloves, and work outside or in a well-ventilated area, covering surrounding areas with a drop sheet to avoid overspray.
■ Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
1 Use sharp scissors to cut through the existing cords on the chair seat and chair back. Unwind the cords from around the chair frame, being mindful of the cut edges and any flaking rust, then discard old cord.
2 Use a wire brush to scrape off any loose paint or flaking rust. Clean the chair frame using soapy water and a lint-free cloth, rinse off, then leave to dry thoroughly. Prepare a drop sheet ready for painting.
3 Spray rusted areas with rust converter, then leave to dry. Apply spray metal primer, then several light coats of metal spray paint using a smooth sweeping motion, leaving to dry after each coat. Tip: Hold spray can 20-25cm from the surface.
4 Tie the rope to the frame in a rear corner of the seat, take it forward to loop over the front edge of the seat frame twice, then back to the rear. Continue the warp (lengthwise weaving) to form the seat, pulling the rope taut but not tight.
5 When the seat is complete, tie off rope. Repeat to weave the same colour vertically on the chair back (see Get the look, opposite). To set up the weft (crosswise weaving) insert a steel rule or palette knife over and under every five warp strands.
6 Take rope in another colour and tie it onto one side of the chair frame. Weave over and under the five-strand warp sections to create five-strand horizontal bands. Repeat for the chair back. Tie off the rope; trim the ends.

Why you need it
A little bit of rust and a few broken strings should not banish an outdoor chair to the council pick-up pile. You can save a sturdy but tired chair frame with spray paint then use weatherproof rope in the colours of your choice to weave the seat and back. Hello, new favourite outdoor chair!
