Security detail With modern security camera technology, you can ensure the safety of your home and family from wherever you are
A
lot has changed about the way we live, but the instinct to protect the people and things we care about has stayed the same. Modern technology has made it so much easier to keep your home, family and business safe.
UNPLUGGED Taking your home’s security into your own hands has never been easier. New technology means installing security cameras could be a weekend job for a DIYer. Not only do these modern cameras connect wirelessly to your wi-fi router, but they can also be installed without an electrician – look for Swann’s ‘plug and play’ style systems that plug into a power socket, or completely wire-free models that run on a rechargeable battery.
ON WATCH Having a personal security detail might be beyond the
reach of most mere mortals, but your smart security system can offer virtually the same service. Swann’s True Detect senses heat and movement, distinguishing people, animals and cars from false triggers like tree branches or rain. The latest cameras even offer facial recognition for up to 10 people, alerting you when a friend or family member is at the door. With two-way talk, you can chat to the delivery person remotely, scare off intruders by sounding a siren or even use the spotlight camera to shine a light bright enough to scare off anyone who’s up to no good.
EAGLE EYE Suspect someone is lurking outside your home? 1080p full HD video means grainy footage is a thing of the past. Instead, you can expect to see faces, licence plates and crucial details,
like whether your visitor is carrying a parcel for delivery – or a crowbar for mischief! Infrared night vision is enhanced by the addition of a bright spotlight that gives you the full picture of what’s happening in and around your home, even after dark.

2 Swann 1080p indoor wi-fi security camera, I/N: 0138782
INTERNAL AFFAIRS It’s not just external security that you want covered. Indoor security cameras can be positioned around your home to help you keep an eye on the ones you love. An indoor security camera can be used to watch over your pets while you’re at work, or even be installed in an elderly relative’s home, so you can make sure they’re safe. Smart sound alerts will send through a notification when the camera detects a sudden noise, like the sound of a breaking window or someone falling over, while two-way talk lets you check in to make sure they’re okay.

4 Swann 1080p wire-free battery camera, I/N: 0188665

We could all do with a little magic after the year we’ve had – whether that’s creating sparkle in your own backyard (see our bright ideas from page 33) or kicking back in a beach bach. Check out our story on page 21 to soak up some of the laidback vibe! If you’re stuck for gift ideas, look no further than our guides on pages 12 and 70, where you’re bound to find just the right thing. This is a great time to be outdoors, too – why not coax along some of your own veges, a feast of flowers, or plant up some pots? We’ll show you how. Enjoy the issue!

Bees are some of our best friends. Without pollination, we wouldn’t have fruit or seeds. We can give them a helping hand by growing flowers to attract them into our garden. Making a bee-friendly garden with your children can be a great way to teach them about the importance of our buzzy friends and have some fun.

Most veges do thrive in summer, although excessive heat can cause damage. If plants consistently wilt or become stunted, use shade cloth to provide partial protection.

DULUX COLOUR FORECAST
Painting & decorating
2021 RETREAT
Treeless (wall)
Olive Blend
NOURISH
RESET
Dulux’s Colour Forecast for 2021 reflects the need for reassurance and strength in uncertain times. “This global crisis has changed our relationship with our homes – not just on a practical level, the lines between our work and home have blurred beyond recognition. This also affects us on an emotional level too,” says Davina Harper, Dulux colour specialist. The ‘Retreat‘ palette is a soothing mix of
warm whites, brown-based neutrals and vintage blues, which evoke tranquillity and a sense of familiarity. ‘Nourish’ is designed to give us a feeling of wellbeing, as when we’re immersed in nature – think tan, soft olive, buff neutrals and muted ochre. The ‘Reset‘ palette similarly channels the communal quest for a slower pace of life – but with a quirky twist in 70s-inspired shades of blue-green and clay reds.
Hidden away with the door locked shut, garage organisation is usually the last of our concerns. But if it takes a little rummaging to find what you’re looking for, it may be time for some rearranging. Implement these six organisational structures to maintain a well-kept garage
Pinnacle 4 tier heavy duty adjustable shelving unit, $198, I/N: 8901930
Wrap & Move carton labels, $6.91/roll of 100, I/N: 0074012
When it comes to an organised garage, sturdy shelving is your friend, allowing you to use the vertical planes to make the most of the space. Secure to the wall to stop the unit from toppling.
Labels will help you keep a habit of packing up your tools and accessories where they belong. Group similar items together in a toolbox or cupboard and label accordingly.
Pinnacle 1500mm x 810mm x 500mm XL mobile storage unit in Matte Black, $639, I/N: 0038062
Tactix 32.3cm x 18cm x 5.2cm 13-compartment waterproof storage box, $14.98, I/N: 2584022
Storage is key, and easily achieved with a mobile unit. The versatile compartments allow you to store items of all sizes.
When filling the unit drawers, ensure tiny tools and similar items are kept together. Small compartment boxes with removable dividers will make your life a whole lot easier.
Inabox 55L heavy duty storage tub, $15, I/N: 0129300
Pinnacle universal tool rack, $9.98, I/N: 2610008
For seasonal items or things you don’t use very often, a storage tub is the perfect addition to the organiser’s must-have list. Score extra points if they are stackable.
If you find yourself leaning rakes, shovels and the like against the wall, save yourself the tripping hazard and hang them up on a tool rack. Also coil and suspend your hoses and cables to keep them free from tangles.
SPIRIT OF THE SEASON
Bring the magic
This Christmas, we’re showing our gratitude for the tough job the police do to keep our community safe. We’re supporting their important work with a donation of $30,000 to the New Zealand Police Association, Police Families Charitable Trust. Here’s how to make our beachside-inspired pieces
BEACH TENT
Words and steps photography Sam van Kam. Photography Belinda Merrie. *Timbers vary by region; contact your local store for further information.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
Safety equipment Tape measure and pencil Mitre saw or handsaw with mitre box 25mm spade bit Drill press Drill with driver bit 8mm drill bit 180-grit abrasive paper with sanding block Sewing machine Scissors Iron and ironing board Four 1.8m lengths of 65mm x 18mm premium pine* Two 150mm cabin hooks Three 1.8m lengths of 25mm pinetrim dowel* Timber adhesive Two 8mm x 40mm pine dowel connectors Two sheer 1500mm x 1300mm curtains (we used Home Style ‘Omaha’ 0-150cm x 130cm sheer curtains in Cream) Sewing pins Six 8mm lynch pins
1
To make the uprights, measure and cut the pine to four 1600mm lengths with a mitre saw. From the top of each, centre and mark 150mm and 1350mm to make holes using a 25mm spade bit with a drill press. Tip: Prevent breakout by drilling halfway, then flipping to finish from the back.
2
On pairs of uprights, centre and mark 300mm from the top to position the parts of the cabin hook at 45°, with the hook plate turned anti-clockwise on the left upright, and the eye plate turned clockwise on the right, using a drill to secure with the supplied screws.
3
To make the rails, measure and cut the dowel to 1600mm lengths with a mitre saw. Measure and mark 25mm from the ends (to make holes for the lynch pins) using an 8mm bit with a drill press. Tip: Set the depth of the press to drill through the dowel and into an offcut, avoiding the plate below.
4
On one rail, measure and mark 70mm from the ends to make holes using an 8mm bit with a drill press. Dab adhesive onto two dowel connectors and slot them in. Sand all over the uprights, rails and into the 25mm holes with 180grit abrasive paper. Tip: This is the top rail, the remaining rails form the base.
PRO TIP If you don’t have a drill press, clamp the timber securely and use a drill, holding it at 90° to ensure the shafts of the holes are straight
5
To make the cover, position two curtains together on top of each other, right sides in, on a flat surface. Measure along the top, 120mm down, and pin at 80mm intervals. Use a sewing machine set on a wide straight stitch to sew along the pin line, removing them as you go. Stitch along the join again to reinforce the seam.
6
Trim away the excess fabric with scissors, cutting along the outside of the seam closest to the join. Open out the curtains and butterfly the seam to iron it open, which will help position it along the top rail. Tip: The base rails are threaded through the original hems of the curtains to hold down the sides.
HOW TO PUT THE TENT TOGETHER To assemble the frame, position pairs of uprights onto the ends of the top rail, sliding on the left sides first, with the hooks facing outwards. Add lynch pins to the outside holes and stand the frame up, holding it in place with the hooks. To assemble the cover, thread base rails through the curtain hems, then position the cover over the frame, with the joining seam along the top rail. From the inside of the uprights, push the rails into the base holes, securing with lynch pins through the outside holes. Dig the feet into the sand for stability, and avoid using the tent in a strong breeze.

Safety equipment ength of driftwood L Handsaw 120-grit abrasive paper
2
Position the tealights evenly along the driftwood and mark the locations. Hold the spade bit against a tealight to mark the depth on the bit with a pencil. Tip: Measure the depth from the base of the spade, not the point.
The wreath measures 320mm in diameter
3
To make the holes, position the driftwood securely and hold the drill over the marks at 90° to ensure the holes are straight, stopping when the pencil mark is level with the surface. Sand the holes and add the tealights.

Loop rope around circle five and hold with masking tape. Bring the rope over from circle five to circle three, going under the first rope, over the second, under the third and over the fourth.
Loop the rope around circle three and hold with masking tape. Continue to loop around the inside of the shape, ensuring each layer positions against the previous.
At the end of the rope, flip the wreath over to trim the ends with scissors and secure to the back using a hot glue gun. Tip: If it’s to be left outside, seal it with a clear spray-on varnish. ◆

lights through the loop. Bring another 30cm downwards to sit a third of the way around trivet, and secure with a cable tie. Bring a third 30cm length up to pass through the loop and back down to a third point on the trivet so strands are evenly spaced. orn on the beach, Hamptons style is a look that we’ve increasingly adopted and adapted to our Kiwi way of life. If your home is far from the coastal sanctuary you crave, don’t despair. Here are our 17 pointers for effortless seaside style.
OUTSIDE

Choose coastal colours Rachel Lacy, chief coloursmith at PPG Paints ANZ, explains, “The Hamptons style exudes a relaxed and effortless elegance that has timeless appeal. Create this look at home by starting with a refined coastal palette of crisp whites, deep, dark and duck-egg blues, and pale blue-greys.” Contrast is key; highlight windows and trims in a bright white.

Find a theme “Styling up a Hamptons home depends on the look you are trying to create,” says Natalee Bowen. “If you’re heading for a coastal, beachy vibe, look at layering coral, jute rugs, a blue and white theme and seaweed or shell prints. If you are doing more of a modern take, stick to a theme of black and white – think wrought iron light features, cream or soft grey lounges and pops of black furniture.”
14
Layer with rugs Create intimate zones and add luxurious warmth underfoot with rugs. Draw on the look’s beach holiday origins with natural textures like jute, coir and sisal, or lightweight cotton rugs in seaside shades of blue and golden sand.

A patch from scratch From freshly snipped salad leaves to firm potatoes lifted out of your own soil, there’s nothing like the taste of homegrown veg

s we head into the warmer months, why not create your own vege patch? Here’s how to transform even the most barren backyard into a veritable smorgasbord of edible goodies. Select the perfect spot Scott Bromwich of Daltons (daltons.co.nz) says, “A successful vege garden ideally needs full sun (or at least four to five hours each day) during the growing period, and deep, loose, crumbly, free-draining soil. A north/north-east facing position is best, if possible. Make sure the site is sheltered from cold, strong winds and check whether anything will shade the garden such as trees or fences.” If your plot isn’t very sunny, ask in store about herbs and veges that can grow in lower light conditions. For small spaces, a vertical garden, or a sizeable tub or two, will add to your growing space.
Salad vegetables such as lettuce and spring onions are among the most productive and rewarding bunnings |

46
Plan it Choose up or down Consider whether you want an in-ground or raised bed. “In-ground gardening can be cost-effective as no building is required, but its success is dependent on the existing soil being well-drained and nutrient-rich,” says Scott Bromwich. “Often this is not the case and it can take time and patience to build good-quality soil.” If your soil isn’t quite up to scratch, raised beds are a good solution. “Raised gardens are ideal as you can plant above any soil issues,” says Scott. “There are costs associated with constructing and filling them, and they are a more permanent fixture, but they provide ease of access and can be positioned anywhere.” Go to ground If you’re working with in-ground garden beds, the addition of organic matter such as compost and blood and bone is beneficial, regardless of your soil type. Work these into the soil prior to planting. “Regularly adding organic matter, like compost, improves soil texture and structure, and provides nutrients for beneficial microorganisms in the soil,” explains Scott. If planting in raised garden beds, fill them with a good-quality garden mix. For small beds, you can use large bags of garden mix, but if you have bigger areas, order soil in cubic metres. Or try the ‘no-dig’ method; alternate layers of compost, organic mulch and well-aged manure – this nutritious mix breaks down and fuels your growing plants.
Plant a seed Try to choose plants you know you will eat and use this as a guide when buying seeds or seedlings. “Seeds are great value for money,” says horticulturist Kylie Last of Mr Fothergill’s. “For the same price as one or two seedlings, you can purchase a pack of seeds, which can sometimes contain hundreds or even thousands of seeds – there may also be a greater range of varieties to choose from.” Seeds can take some time to germinate and grow, so plan to ensure they go in at the right time. Always read the pack or label to check the sun, space and growing needs of your plants – climbing beans, tomatoes and cucumbers need room and a support to climb, while pumpkins, sweet potatoes and melons need space to spread. Swap crops Make sure to rotate your plants so they’re not planted in the same spot, year after year. Scott explains why: “The same plant nutrients are taken continually from the soil. If the particular crop being grown has EXPERT TIP Sow successive crops to help extend the harvest window – try spinach, lettuce, bok choy and other Asian leafy greens, and dwarf or climbing beans
When fertilising or spraying your plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating
5 favourite veges Easy enough for novices to grow and delicious to eat! Tomatoes A family fave, with lots of varieties to choose from. For small spaces, look for compact varieties like ‘Patio’ and ‘Sweet 100’.
Leafy greens A staple in most vege gardens, leafy greens like loose-leaf lettuce, spinach, bok choy and tatsoi are quick to grow and can be harvested from 6-8 weeks.
Beetroot A fun and easy vege to grow – and both leaves and roots are edible. Harvest young leaves (leaving at least 5-6 on the plant) and add to salads and sandwiches.
Radish One of the fastest growing veges, you’ll be adding them to your salads in as little as 5-8 weeks. Happy in pots and garden beds alike.
Cucumbers The ultimate summer snack, especially when picked straight off the vine. Look for Lebanese, ‘Richmond Green Apple’ or ‘Burpless’. For small areas, try ‘Patio’ or ‘Spacemaster’.

By rotating where crops are planted, you can manage the soil nutrient balance and avoid disease build-up. Make your beds “Low-growing annuals will flower prolifically over a long period, from late spring to autumn,” says garden designer Catherine Rawnsley (beautifulgardens.co.nz). “Think about what plant height and shape will give you the best effect for what you are trying to achieve. For low ground cover, the front of a border or to cascade over a container’s edges, choose petunias or nasturtiums.” Then you can add vertical interest, such as foxgloves or climbers such as sweet peas, she adds. }

Add a hardy trailing annual such as lobelia to a container garden or bed for height variation
Assess the site The first step is to scan your yard and look for areas that could do with an injection of colour. Before choosing your plants, determine the amount of sun and shade they will receive throughout the day, says horticulturist Kylie Last of Mr Fothergill’s Seeds. “From there, you can start looking at particular plant varieties, size and colour,” she explains. Don’t just limit yourself to the noticeable areas – potted colour can also be used to enhance spaces or help distract from unsightly views. “Colour can make a space more soothing or exciting, as well as look larger or smaller, depending on what you’re trying to achieve,” says Kylie. For impact, fill pots or hanging baskets with a mass of single-colour flowers. Think outside the square too, she suggests. “Hang pots and baskets on branches of larger trees, from your fence or use a plant stand to give plants some height and depth.”

A swathe of marigolds adds a belt of colour to this vege garden
Colour your way While colour is a personal preference, the trick to creating a satisfying scheme is using combinations that are instinctively pleasing to the eye. Have a look at the colour wheel – shades opposite each other are great for contrast, drawing attention to
focal points and creating a bold planting scheme. Or stick within a tonal range, either warm (red, orange, yellow) or cool tones (purple, blue, green), for a naturally harmonious look. When choosing, bear in mind how you want the space to feel. “A restrained colour palette will be more
calming,” says Catherine Rawnsley. “A lot of varied colour can make a garden look very busy.” Plan ahead When planting into new or existing beds, always enrich the soil with organic matter prior to planting. “Annuals, in particular, are heavy feeders, so it’s best to incorporate some well-rotted manure or compost,” says Kylie Last. Fork the soil in thoroughly to help mix in the nutrients, and plant up. Firm the soil around the plants and water in well with a diluted seaweed solution. ◆
Calibrachoas A hanging basket favourite, with masses of small petunia-like flowers, in gorgeous single and bi-colour combinations.
Celosia With its feathery plumes in flamboyant red, orange, yellow and purple tones, it’s a sure winner in pots and garden beds.
Verbena A stunning ground cover, with blooms in various colours, often contrasting with bright white ‘eyes’. Allow to cascade over pots, retaining walls or rockeries.
Lobelia The dainty violet-blue, pink or white flowers of this low-growing annual are perfect for sunny spots in the garden.
Alyssum Its petite, highly scented flowers in white or purple are ideal for filling in borders, planters, hanging baskets and rockeries.
Zinnia You know it’s summer when these beauties burst onto the scene. Plant near the back door so their display can be appreciated from inside, too.
New Guinea impatiens Brighten up shady areas with these vibrant flowers, in tones ranging from red to cool pinks. For sun-loving varieties, look for ‘SunPatiens’.
Petunias Large bold flowers in various colourways make petunia one of the best performing potted colours. Mass plant in baskets or in garden beds.
Snapdragon Add beauty and scent to the garden with the gorgeous ruffled blooms of this low-medium sized annual. Cut and enjoy them indoors, too.

Board revival Give timber decking a thorough clean and refinish once a year to keep the boards looking in great shape. Scrub well with a deck brush and a purpose-designed cleaning product, such as Cabot’s Deck Clean. Leave the solution on the boards for 10-20 minutes then rinse off with water. Once the boards are clean and dry, give them two or three coats of decking oil or exterior stain. and replace them with screws. Choose heavier 12g stainless steel screws, ideally 65mm long, to ensure that the fasteners grip firmly into the joist. If you have an old deck, especially one clad with softwood boards, the sub-frame might be structurally sound, even if the decking boards are on their last legs. Individual boards might be worth replacing if only a few are badly affected by rot but, if the damage is extensive, it might be a better option to reclad the entire deck. “Given our extreme weather conditions, certain types of soft timber decks, that are not maintained, are prone to rot and mould growth,” says Rees Lewis, Ekologix national business development manager, NZ. “A visual inspection will usually be enough to reveal potential problems with the
sub-frame. If you see any rotted areas, cracks in the bearers or joists, or corroded fasteners, the sub-frame will need repair or rebuilding.” Assuming the decking sub-frame is in good condition, this might be a great opportunity to invest in and install composite decking, made from recycled plastic and timber. Most are available in a variety of warm, natural colours. “The main advantage of good-quality composite boards is that you’ll be investing in a commercial-grade warranted product that needs little to no maintenance,” says Rees. a spray-on outdoor cleaner that you can connect to your hose. Leave it to soak in for 10 minutes, scrub with a stiff-bristled brush and then rinse it off with water. Once the paved area is completely dry, you can apply a sealer (check the product is suitable for your pavers) to help keep it looking pristine for longer. If smaller, brick-sized pavers have become wobbly over time, it’s best to re-bed them instead of simply brushing more sand between them. Carefully lever up any loose ones, then sprinkle bedding sand over the area and screed it flat using a straightedge or spirit level. Tap the pavers back into place with a rubber mallet. To finish, brush bedding sand into the joints with a stiff-bristled broom.
Fix up your fence The most popular types of timber fences are clad with a single layer or overlapping layers of vertical palings or pickets, with a small gap between them. A leaning fence with rotted or split rails or palings can be a safety issue and will likely need replacing. But a couple of loose or damaged palings or pickets can easily be replaced or reattached. Palings are usually secured with nails, so will need levering off with a pry bar or wrecking bar. Pickets attached with screws will require a cordless drill or impact driver for removal. Cut the new paling or picket to size and align it into place next to its neighbours. If you’re nailing it back on, offset the position of each nail by a few millimetres to ensure it’s hammered into solid timber instead of going back into the old nail holes. Colorbond steel fences are tough and weather-resistant; generally, they’ll just need a regular scrub with a stiff-bristled
brush to get rid of any cobwebs, leaf litter and other gunk. Stubborn dirt will usually wash off with ordinary dishwashing detergent, but rinse it down with the garden hose rather than a pressure washer; the high-intensity stream of water can potentially damage the finish and will be extremely noisy on the metal sheets. Gate repairs The hinges on a steel chain-link gate can sometimes work loose over time, making the gate open crookedly and fail to latch properly. With the gate closed, align it so the gap on either side is even, and the top and bottom are flush with the rails of the fence, using bar clamps to hold it in place. Use a shifting spanner or socket wrench to tighten the bolts holding the hinge to the fence post. If you find any of the bolts are corroded or missing, replace them with galvanised or stainless-steel hardware. }

Secure it Do you keep all your valuable gardening gear in the shed? If so, make sure the door locks properly and the structure is waterproof. Most sheds, whether timber, steel or plastic, are designed to withstand our harsh New Zealand climate. A typical cedar shed is made from western red cedar cladding with a New Zealand-grown pine framing and can come with either a cedar shingle or coloured steel roof. Cedar fibres contain natural oils that assist in resisting insect attack and decay. Sheds can be assembled on either a concrete slab or rebated purpose-built floor. While cedar will absorb moisture, it’s much less than other timbers, says Kevin Walker, marketing and communications bunnings.co.nz |

bunnings
lead from Duratuf (duratuf.co.nz). “The even grain and relatively consistent density also make western red cedar less likely to swell, warp, cup and twist.” If you’re constructing your shed on concrete, Kevin says, “It’s common practice to put a layer of damp proof course (DPC) anywhere timber sits on concrete to prevent moisture transfer.” To deter unwanted visitors from making your shed their home, check for any holes, cracks or crevices and block them against mice or other small animals. Spiders will often find a way in and weave webs in any available nook or cranny, so surface spray or barrier spray might be the only solution against them, as well as cockroaches and other creepy crawlies. ◆

Pit Master tips
Licence to grill Master the culinary art of charcoal cooking and become a backyard barbecue hero with Char-Griller
A
nyone can scorch a snag on a barbie, but if you’re ready to take your grilling game to the next level, you’ve got the perfect teammate in Char-Griller. With Char-Griller’s Akorn Kamados, you can master the art of low and slow, and serve up a smoky feast that makes an invite to your backyard more coveted among your mates than a seat in a Michelin-starred restaurant.
HOWDY PARTNER Whether you’re an old hand on the grill or a relative barbecue novice, Char-Griller Akorn Kamados – both the original Akorn Kamado and the small but mighty Akorn Junior – are the ultimate grilling partners: easy to use, versatile, reliable and fuel efficient. Pit Master Brendan Reisima from The Smoking Meathouse sings its praises: “I love the extra cooking rack, you can barbecue a lot of meat using both levels, and the kids love using the deflector stone to cook pizzas on. At barbecue competitions, I love that I can set the pit to the temperature I want, and it just stays there all day, a very reliable constant stable temperature.” Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
FLAVOUR SAVOUR Unlike gas-fired barbecues, a charcoal grill is about more than just cooking outside; it’s a culinary experience, infusing your food with the unique, mouth-watering taste of charcoal barbecued food. Whether you’re searing a steak or slow-cooking a succulent brisket all day long, the Kamado will enhance the flavour of your chosen protein like nothing else. So, with your Akorn Kamado stationed in the backyard, you’ve earned your reputation as king of the grill, but there’s always room to surprise and delight. Experiment with Char-Griller’s rubs:
Brendan Reisima of The Smoking Meathouse offers his top tips for mastering the Kamado. 1. “Put foil on the deflector stone – this keeps it clean for when you want to cook pizzas on it and makes clean up a breeze.” 2. “If you put a large piece of foil across the two openings over the deflector stone, leaving one gap open, you can fit larger pieces of meat on it, without burning them.” 3. “Shut the vents down immediately after using, then you can use the leftover charcoal for the next cook.” 4. “Always use a Char-Griller chimney starter to light your charcoal. Tip the hot charcoal into a bed of unlit charcoal (the minion method), so the lit charcoal slowly burns into the unlit charcoal. Leave the vents fully open, and when it’s 50°F (10°C) short of your desired temp, set the vents, and the temp will come up.” 5. “Have fun with it. I haven’t found anything I can’t cook on the Char-Griller Akorn!”
Brisket & Beef, Ribs & Pork, or All Purpose. They’ll season your food with an explosion of spice, mixed to marry perfectly with the smoky flavour of the charcoal grill.

Tricks of the trade One of the best pot planting tricks is the ‘thriller, filler, spiller’ concept. “This works on the principle of the ‘thriller’ being the feature plant – a plant that is big, bold, textural or unique,” says Lyndall Keating, landscape designer and horticulturist. “The ‘fillers’ complement but don’t overwhelm the feature plant, and finally, the ‘spiller’ is added to tumble or overhang the planter to help to soften the edges.” Use this principle to guide your choices, but also consider plant colour and texture to create a balanced design. Group plants that share the same needs, for example, preference to full sun or shade or those that have similar watering requirements. Otherwise, warns Lyndall, you could quickly run into issues, such as infections from pests or disease, or ultimately the death of a plant. Let the container size determine the type of plants you grow, suggests horticulturist and Northcote Pottery brand ambassador Melissa King. “Squat bowls and shallow planters are ideal for displaying succulents, annuals, lettuces and herbs, whereas big barrels or tubs are perfect for showcasing larger plants like dwarf fruit trees,” she says. Ideas can come from the style of pot. “Certain pots give off a particular vibe – like country charm or coastal chic – so draw inspiration for the planting scheme from the colour, texture and design of the pot or vice versa,” says Melissa.
Bowls of succulents are ideal centrepieces; being low, they don’t create a sight barrier across a table
Pot basics When potting up, always use a premium potting mix. “They contain nutrients, fertilisers and wetting agents to give plants the best opportunity to flourish,” says Lyndall. If planting succulents or cacti, look for a free-draining cacti and succulent mix. Water regularly, especially in hot weather, as pots tend to dry out faster than garden beds. To help promote the life of your display, feed often. “Liquid feed potted plants every two to three weeks – you can also water in diluted seaweed between feeds to help promote stronger, healthier plants,” says Melissa.
Tip Always wear gloves and a mask when handling potting mix
Pots to purchase
Recipes for success Container gardens are a fantastic opportunity to get creative. Here are some of our favourite combos: Shallow bowls are great for low-growing succulents. Create impact by planting up a large, round bowl with blue chalk sticks (Senecio mandraliscae), or use larger succulents – agaves, flapjacks or crassula – as the thriller piece. Fill the gaps with a mix of smaller echeveria and sempervivum, and trail string of pearls, jelly beans or donkey’s tail over the sides. Hanging baskets are reminiscent of the floral-lined streets of the northern hemisphere. Be inspired by that look and fill baskets with timeless red and white geraniums or a sweet mix of pastel-coloured calibrachoa, petunias and verbenas. Large round pots are perfect for compact trees or large shrubs such as olive trees, dwarf fruit trees or cycads. For maximum impact, underplant with a cascading plant like Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’. Tall narrow planters lend themselves beautifully to a formal garden style. “Fill with clipped buxus for a classic look or with striking, strappy leaved plants like phormium or cordylines to accentuate the tall, narrow shape,” says Melissa. Large egg pots, particularly in grey or white, suit a single planting of a medium-large sized plant, especially ones with unique structure and foliage such as a golden barrel cactus or agave. “For a coastal-inspired display, team bronze grasses with silverleaved Calocephalus, compact euphorbia and rosette-style succulents,” suggests Melissa. ◆

eiling fans are our friends during the hotter months, plus they offer an energy-efficient option when it comes to cooling: when air is in motion, we can tolerate slightly warmer temperatures so we don’t have to crank up the air conditioning. There are plenty of styles to choose from to complement different decor schemes, but here’s what you need to know before you head in store. When size matters Check the measurements of the area you need to cool. Choosing an incorrect fan size for a space is a common mistake, says HPM lifestyle expert Jason Neophytou. “As a general rule, with rooms measuring 6m x 6m or above, you should consider a larger
fan size – between 1200-1400mm,” he says. “For smaller rooms measuring up to 4m x 5m, such as bedrooms, you should consider sizes up to 1200mm.” If you are dealing with a much larger space, such as an open-plan living/dining zone, you may need two. Comparing airflow between fans of a similar size will help gauge performance, explains Tanya Gatti of Arlec. Airflow measures the average volume of air flowing through measured points every 60 seconds, in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The more CFM, the more the fan can move that air. But watch the wattage it takes to do this – the more power used, the higher your bills. TOP TIP
Typical types Not all blades are created equal – they come in different sizes, materials and quantities, and where you’re going to locate your fan is a key factor in the choice. Blades made of MDF, for example, will not fare so well in an outdoor spot – aluminium, plastic or fibreglass are better options. For spaces such as bedrooms or a study, choose wooden blades, and for kitchens, metal, suggests Jason. “Wooden blades are quieter than metal blades due to their shape,” he explains. “For larger areas, such as kitchens or living rooms, choose a metal blade – these tend to move more air, }

Banish bugs with our expert tips on halting creepy crawlies at the threshold
L
ured by warmth and food, brought in on the back of pets, or just flying indoors because they can, cockroaches, spiders and other insect pests are all too common uninvited guests in our home. Take comfort in the knowledge that there is a veritable armoury of products and ideas you can apply to keep the bugs at bay.

The natural touch While we might end up resorting to chemicals, it’s worth giving these natural alternatives a try first. For a natural cobweb cleaner and spider repellent, fill a spray bottle with half white vinegar, half water and spray it directly onto cobwebs, then mop them up with a cobweb brush. For those that are hard to reach, use a cobweb broom to get right into corners. You can also try soaking cotton balls with a few drops of eucalyptus oil and leaving them in problem areas. Eucalyptus oil is also said to be a repellent to cockroaches – dilute a few drops in water and spray where you suspect they are congregating.

Safety tip
Peppermint oil is another one that cockroaches hate and a good alternative if you find the smell of eucalyptus too strong. Outdoors, citronella is the go-to repellent for any mosquitoes threatening your evening entertaining. The citronella candle is a barbecue classic. Alternatively, you could opt for a tabletop oil burner or try burning citronella lamp oil in a torch for a party vibe. An idea for bug-bothered gardeners is to experiment with insect-repelling plants. Catnip is said to repel mosquitoes (plus your furry friends will love it), while herbs like rosemary and basil may also deter flying insects. A targeted approach 4 If you’re dealing with an outright infestation, it’s time to call in the big guns. Chemical insect control products come in varied forms from granules and sprays to plug-ins. A generic insect spray is great to have on hand, but if you’ve got a specific problem – such as marauding ants or an intrusion of cockroaches – then a targeted product is the way to go. Ants are almost impossible to keep out, but if you can see where they’re entering, sprinkle biodegradable ant sand granules in cracks and crevices that the pests are using as access points into your home. there are a few measures you can take. “Get rid of anything the flies would feed on or breed in, inside or close to your home,” says David Brittain, technical support manager for Kiwicare (kiwicare.co.nz). “Also, consider physical barriers, make the inside unsuitable for flies with improved airflow and lighting, use long-lasting surface insecticides on surfaces that flies land or crawl on, and strategically position automatic insect control aerosols.” If eight-legged fiends are invading your space, there are purpose-designed products you can rely on to fix the problem. “The PestXpert spider blast eliminator spray can be used to treat your spider problem directly or it can also be used to create a barrier where you don’t want spiders to take up residence,” says Lachlan Brodie, sales manager, environmental health division, at PestXpert. There are three main types of cockroaches commonly found in New Zealand homes: American cockroaches (the big ones), German roaches (the small ones) and the Gisborne cockroach (the flat ones). A direct-action spray can deal with American cockroaches, and some are also suitable for use as a barrier spray to deter them from coming indoors in the first place. Cockroach bait stations can be placed under cabinets and behind large appliances to get rid of the roaches you don’t see. Remember to always read labels and instructions for suitability before using any insecticide, baits or surface sprays. 11 12

Plug in, pests out When it comes to electronic methods of insect control, there are basically two types: zappers and trappers. Both use a UV lamp to lure flying pests, with zappers eliminating them with an electrical grid and trappers sticking them to a glue board. While most electronic insect controls work by luring and eliminating, the Thermacell ‘Halo’ unit repels instead. This butane-fuelled device uses a heatactivated, insecticide-infused repellent mat to drive away mosquitoes from your outdoor area. An ounce of prevention Adopt a few strategies to deter unwelcome, many-legged guests. Check for bug havens around the home, places where they love to live or breed, like standing water (ponds, but also blocked drains or full pot saucers) or an unaerated compost heap. Make it harder for bugs to get in by installing flyscreens on windows and doors, and being conscious of keeping doors shut when flies or mosquitoes are active. Keeping surfaces clean and free of food will also help make your home less appealing to creepy crawlies. Administering a long-lasting surface spray is a task worth adding to your spring cleaning to-do list. “Applying a barrier treatment around the home will significantly reduce the insect pests seen inside,” says Lachlan. ◆

From the plywood, cut a piece 600mm high x 600mm (the width of the panel) for the back wall, three 586mm-wide x 300mm-deep floors, and four 400mm-high x 300mm-wide pieces for the sides and doors. Along the 600mm width of the plywood, measure up 200mm and mark the centre to cut a triangle for the roof front. Save the offcuts to make the internal walls.
2
Position the roof front at the top of the back piece as a template to mark out the top of the triangle, then cut with a handsaw. Smooth over all the pieces with 180-grit abrasive paper, removing any breakout from along the cuts, wiping away dust with a cloth.

To assemble, use set squares with clamps to stand the side pieces up, run adhesive along the back edges, then position the back piece and secure with bullethead nails at 100mm intervals. Tip: Tap the nails 20mm in from the ends to avoid splitting the timber, pulling the plywood into position as you go. }

Superfresco Easy’s wallpaper designs are based on European trends, delivering fashion-forward style ideas to suit all tastes. Or use wallpaper to bring the outside in and make your home a nature-inspired sanctuary; Superfresco Easy’s lush botanical prints range from modern florals to feathery foliage.

innovative paper is just as easy to work with as the name implies. Hanging traditional wallpaper can leave you wrestling with long strips of sticky paper, but pasting the wall means you’re handling dry paper and applying adhesive to the wall. And, if the glue starts to dry while you’re fiddling with a tricky corner, you can simply apply a little more glue.
CHANGE IT UP Is it time to move out of your rental? Or does that flamboyant floral no longer float your boat? No problem! One of the biggest advantages of paste-the-wall paper is how easy it is to remove; just peel it off when you want a change –

Make it Tackling corners
Mitres well
Make light work of these common cuts with our back-to-basics guide to cutting mitred edges
B
eing able to cut mitre joints is a fundamental skill for a DIYer, and it’s handy for a number of home improvement projects. A mitred joint is usually made by fitting two cuts together to create a right-angled corner. The angled, square or bevelled cuts are made across the wood grain. Electric or batteryoperated compound mitre saws are great for experienced DIYers who tackle a number of large jobs requiring mitred corners, such as making timber furniture, laying floorboards or fitting skirting, but for smaller or infrequent jobs, a mitre box with handsaw will do just as well. Here’s how to use one. SAFETY TIP While the box captures most of the sawdust, it’s best to work in a well-ventilated spot out of the wind, sweeping up as you go. Wear eye protection and a mask
Cutting with a mitre box To cut accurate mitres by hand, use a mitre box with machined slots on both sides designed to guide a handsaw. Traditionally a tenon saw is used, with a flat blade that is long enough to fit across the mitre box, with teeth set for cutting against the wood grain.
Master mitres to make square cuts for butt-jointing, angled cuts for moulding and trim, and bevelled cuts for skirting
1
2
Set up on a flat, bench-height surface and secure the box so it won’t move while cutting. Some boxes have a lip at the front to overhang the workbench and prevent it from slipping forward. Some have a lip on the sides for clamping to the bench, or holes for temporarily securing to the bench with screws.
Mark up the cutting line using a combination square and sharp pencil. When measuring pieces that have mitre cuts at both ends, make the first cut at one end of the timber, then measure from the longest point of the mitre.

Position the piece firmly against the far side of the box. Match the cutting line with the slots and position the saw with teeth touching the cutting line on the waste side. Tip: Cutting on this side of the line allows for the width of the blade, usually about 3mm, which is removed as sawdust and is called the kerf.
Types of cuts Square cuts: For square cuts on lengths of timber, dowel or moulding, keep the overhang level by clamping an offcut of the same thickness underneath (ours is 15mm). Avoid scraping into the slots by keeping the blade horizontal when cutting.
4
Angled cuts: These are used on trim and framing. Position the piece with the flat edge against the far side of the box. Always cut over the front face to minimise wood-grain breakout. Bevelled cuts: Used on skirting boards or deck cladding. Use the slot at the end of the box, which angles the saw downwards at 45°. Smooth wood-grain breakout at the back of the cut with sand paper. ◆
Cut by moving the saw to break the surface fibres and score a starter groove. Complete the cut by moving the saw back Bevelled and forwards to full capacity, without letting the tip pull through. Angled Let the blade do the cutting, without force. Tip: Stand facing Square the mitre box with feet hip-width apart, hold the piece with one hand and cut with the other, making sure there’s room for your arm to move fully and smoothly. bunnings |

othing stamps personality on a home like artwork, but it needn’t cost a fortune to give your home a unique look. Try framing a favourite fabric or scarf, creating a collage from photos or found objects, or even painting your own freehand design. To stretch the budget even further, try making a frame for your masterpiece – see over the page for instructions. For a professional finish, you could buy inexpensive mat board (from a framing or art store) and ask a glazier to cut a piece of glass (around 2mm thick) to size – take the frame with you to make sure it fits. Place the frame first, then the glass, the mat board, then your artwork before finishing with the MDF backing board.

Have the backing cut in store to be the same size as your chosen artwork. Ours is 300mm x 400mm and the outside of the frame measures 480mm x 380mm. To cut a long side of the frame, make a 45° cut at the end of the timber length. Check the length of the artwork, minus 12mm to allow for the recess in the moulding then, from the shortest point, transfer the measurement to mark the opposite point. Change the angle of the saw to make the cut in the opposite direction.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
For the short sides of the frame, make a 45° cut at the end of the timber length. Check the width of the artwork minus 12mm then, from the shortest point, transfer the measurement to mark the opposite point. Change the angle of the saw to make the cut in the opposite direction, then repeat Step 2.
To cut the second side of the frame, make a 45° cut at the end of the timber length, then use the first side as a template to mark the second cut in the opposite direction. Tip: Position the framing in the saw with the face side down and the outside edge against the fence so the longest point of the mitre is at the outside edge. To allow for the thickness of the blade, position it on the offcut side of the mark rather than exactly over it.
To assemble the frame, dab PVA wood glue over the cut ends and position the sides together face down. Use four corner clamps to hold the mitres, wipe away excess glue with a damp cloth and leave to dry.

Remove the clamps and fill any gaps in the mitres with wood filler. Leave to dry, then sand with 240-grit sandpaper, smoothing along the edges and working over the mitres to remove any hardened glue or excess filler. Tip: Leave the timber natural or seal with paint or varnish, applying two coats with a small brush.
EXPERT TIP It’s worth investing in a picture-hanging kit suited to your wall type (with fasteners for plasterboard or masonry) which includes hooks, wire, screw eyes, D-rings and saw-tooth hangers for various frames
6
Turn the frame face down to position the artwork and place the MDF backing board on top. To secure the assembly with frame stays, use a 2.5mm bit to pre-drill holes at the centre of each side, about 6mm from the inside edge and 5mm deep. Install the supplied screws using a mini screwdriver. Tip: When hanging artwork, always use fixings appropriate for your walls. ◆

Veg out Turn your backyard into a productive garden with easygrow veges, ideal for beginners
Tip After applying fertiliser, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating
Silverbeet Also known as Swiss chard, this large leafy green tastes like spinach, but with a more robust flavour. For a traditional silverbeet variety, go for ‘Fordhook Giant’, but for something with more colour, try rainbow chard. You can enjoy the leaves even after the plant goes to seed, as the flavour does not change. Beans A much-loved vege for its taste and easy-growing nature. There are two forms – bush or dwarf beans, which are perfect for pots, and climbing beans, which need support. Both produce an abundance of pods in different shapes, colours and flavours. Feed with a potassium-rich fertiliser to encourage flowers and pods.
Silverbeet (Beta vulgaris ssp. cicla)
Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)
Plant in full sun in the garden or in a large pot, and feed with nitrogen-rich fertiliser to boost leafy growth.
Available in bush or climbing varieties, plant in a sunny spot in well-drained soil enriched with blood and bone.
Courgette
Spring onion
Spring onion For a milder onion taste, spring onions (the long, thin ones with the white bulb) are the perfect addition to the kitchen garden. Prepare the soil with plenty of organic matter and feed with an all-purpose vege fertiliser throughout the growing season. Harvest the green tops at any time, leaving the bulb intact, which will continue to grow. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.co.nz/plants

Courgette Once courgette (also known as zucchini) starts fruiting, this climbing vine can be very productive! It’s ideal for pots or garden beds, as long as there is a trellis to keep the leaves and fruit off the ground. Feed with a complete fertiliser suitable for fruiting veges and pick fruit regularly to encourage continuous cropping.
