News What’s happening in

April Find out what’s new, what’s trending and what’s inspiring us around the home and garden this month

This month in the garden

Words Amanda Ghalaini, (gardening to-do list) Tammy Huynh. Photography (editor) Sue Stubbs; (camellia) Getty Images; (autumn colour) Dulux Australia/Lisa Cohen, styling Bree Leech. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings. Paint colours may vary on application

A word from our editor

If you’re keen to try using colour in your home instead of the usual white, this is a great time to do it. There are many rich, gorgeous and liveable hues around – and colour really does make a statement! For inspiration, turn to our feature wall story on page 19. Paint is also one of the easiest ways to make a speedy change to anything from furniture to the front door. For proof, see Bright Stars, on page 37, where we’ve given one front door six different looks, all with the power of paint. Enjoy the issue!

Tick off this to-do list for tiptop outdoor areas. For more on what to do in the garden during April, go to bunnings.com.au/garden-diaries

Hortico snail & slug pellets, $2.27/500g, I/N: 2961499 ✚ Watch out, pests about! New shoots and fresh leafy growth are irresistible to slugs and snails. Check plants and scatter snail pellets around garden beds, keeping pets well clear.

WHAT’S NEW

AUTUMN COLOUR

Munns winter grass killer, $22.98/2.4L, I/N: 0121424 ✚ If you’ve had winter grass in your lawn in the past, apply a pre-emergent spray now to prevent it from germinating.

✚ Check out your local Bunnings for sasanqua camellias – they’re looking their best now and it’s a chance to see what the flower looks like before you plant.

✚ Plant springflowering bulbs: daffodils, jonquils, tulips, hyacinths, freesias and anemones. See page 66 for growing tips and our favourite flowers.

Dulux’s Grounded palette combines earthy neutrals and warm whites with accents of coral and lavender for an airy, sophisticated look. Try Dulux’s Wash&Wear range in Pancake Mix, Sandrock Bluff and Hint Of Lavender.

Finished decorating? Drop off leftover paint and tins at a Paintback collection site for recycling. Check out paintback.com.au for locations near you. 

Events in April FirePro 9V photoelectric smoke alarm, $12.90, I/N: 4211416

Printed by Ovato Print Ltd. Paper fibre is from well-managed forests and other controlled sources.

✚ As the air is cool and the soil is warm, now is the best time for planting deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs and perennials (except if they’re cold sensitive). Mix in plenty of organic matter and compost prior to planting.

Dulux Sandrock Bluff

Daylight saving time ends (April 5) Use the end of daylight saving (even if your state doesn't have it!) as a reminder to check smoke alarms and change the batteries.

Easter family night (April 2) Head in store to celebrate Easter at a Bunnings family night, packed full of fun activities, kids craft, DIY workshops and much more. See your local store for details.

Anzac Day (April 25) Take time out on this special day to add a swathe of scarlet poppies to garden beds or pots. Tesselaar KaBloom Festival of Flowers (March 28-April 19) Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges host a breathtaking feast of florals. This year’s event also boasts circus performers, food, market stalls and a treasure hunt.

TRENDING BENCHTOP FINISHES Planning a kitchen reno? These benchtop looks are so hot right now! Take note 1 Kaboodle Kitchen 600mm cut to measure benchtop in Terrazola, $198/linear m, I/N: 0090962. 2 Kaboodle Kitchen 600mm cut to measure benchtop in Biancoccino, $198 /linear m, I/N: 0090945. 3 Kaboodle Kitchen 600mm cut to measure benchtop in Bambucha, $167/linear m, I/N: 0090927. 4 Think Benchtops ‘Think Solid’ 38mm custom benchtop in Bilberry, $678/sqm, I/N: 0111465. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

When decorating your home, why stop at the bathroom? Keeping it free of decor bits and bobs may seem wise to maintain a clean and tidy space, but without extra personal touches it can become sterile and unwelcoming. Don’t fret: a little greenery can go a long way. Popular additions to your living room, the

entrance way and the kitchen, indoor plants are just as perfect for the bathroom. They soften hard tiled surfaces and purify air, transforming the room into a sanctuary for residents and guests. However, if you have curious pets roaming the house, keep in mind that some indoor plants are poisonous to our

furry friends. Do your research and select plants that are pet-safe. Tailor your plant size, pot and placement to fit your bathroom. A pot on a stand is a great option as the stand’s airiness will make the room feel less crowded. Or place your plant on the end of your vanity, but don’t cram it in – give it breathing space.

How to

Cut an MDF circle

This is how to mark and cut perfect circles from MDF. We used this technique for the top and base structure of the DIY round table on page 26

This product is available to buy online only and is sold and delivered through a Bunnings MarketLink Trusted Seller. Not all items are available in all states and territories. *Delivery charges may apply.

ProjectPete

Mark the centre of the MDF square and install a 40mm-long screw, ensuring it doesn’t go all the way through. Loop string around the screw, adjusting the length so a pen sits in the saddle to mark the radius as it’s pulled taut.

2

Elevate the sheet on an offcut at the centre of the circle. Install the jigsaw blade, checking the depth of the blade is less than the height of the offcut. Secure the screw into the centre of the offcut. Tip: We used 35mm x 75mm treated pine cut to 400mm as the offcut.

3

Wearing a mask, use a 10mm bit to drill a hole just outside the line. Put the jigsaw blade through the hole and allow the base to rest flat against the surface. Turn the jigsaw on and gently guide it forward to cut just outside the line, stopping regularly to turn the piece. Unscrew the offcut.

Br ish Paints Glazed Ruby

3D feature wall TOOLS & MATERIALS

¡ Safety equipment ¡ 1200mm spirit level ¡ Masking tape ¡ Measuring tape and pencil ¡ Mitre box with hand saw ¡ Drop sheet ¡ 50mm angled cutter ¡ Paint roller and tray

¡ 2.7m lengths of Porta 30mm x 12mm DAR primed pine* (we used 16 lengths on a 3.4m-wide wall) ¡ 180-grit abrasive paper ¡ Construction adhesive (we used Selleys Ezi Press Liquid Nails) ¡ Paint

Make it! See below

1

On the spirit level, wrap masking tape and mark 900mm from one end, then measure and mark every 100mm along the wall, 900mm above the skirting boards. (Use a pencil and lightly sand off marks before painting.)

2

Cut the pre-primed pine to 900mm (bottom) and 1800mm (top) lengths using a mitre saw or mitre box with a handsaw, and smooth over the ends with abrasive paper. Note: Adjust the measurement of the top lengths according to the height of your ceiling, or allow pine lengths to overlap slightly, as seen above.

3

Place one strip of pine at a time. Apply construction adhesive to the back and place it on the wall, following the pattern above. Use the spirit level to check that it’s straight, tape in place and leave to dry overnight. Repeat with remaining strips.

4

Remove the tape, put down a drop sheet and mask around the edges of the wall to cover trim and cornices. Paint the wall, cutting in down the sides of the pine strips with an angled brush, then apply two coats with a roller. *Not all timbers are available in all states.

The trick to cutting circles for this table is to use MDF, which is a composite material that doesn’t have a grain, making it easier to cut with a jigsaw

5

Repeat with the remaining strips, working in sections and wiping adhesive drips with a damp cloth. To start each section, use the builder’s square to check the strip is straight. At the last section, before applying adhesive, dry-fit the strips to check if they fit evenly or require spacing out slightly.

6

Use a countersinking bit to drill holes into the centres of the feet, position them onto thirds of the base, apply adhesive and secure with 60mm screws. Turn the assembly over and check all the nails are secure, tapping any protruding heads with a small hammer.

1

2

3

On a length of 19mm tri-quad moulding, measure 395mm, then use a stopper on the mitre saw to cut 62 strips of equal length. Tip: To set up a stopper, use the fence on the saw table or use a clamp with timber offcuts, cutting up to three lengths at a time.

4

7

8

Using a mitre or hand saw, trim MDF panels to make one 9mm-thick 600mm square and two 16mm-thick 600mm squares. Follow the method on page 10 to cut a 9mm-thick tabletop circle 530mm in diameter. Use the tabletop to mark and cut structural top and base circles from the 16mm-thick MDF.

On the 42mm square pine, measure three 320mm supports and three 50mm feet, cutting with a mitre saw. Use a countersinking bit to drill holes into each third of the top, apply adhesive and secure the supports with 40mm screws. Turn assembly upside down to attach the base, using a builder’s square to line them up.

Working in sections of about 150mm, apply adhesive around the edges of the top and base. Tip: The top is upside down on the work surface. Position a strip against the adhesive, resting the end flat on the work surface and nailing into the base. Use a builder’s square to check the strip is straight before nailing to the top. Position the next strip flush against the first to secure.

Use a random orbital sander with 120-grit abrasive disc to smooth around the strips to ensure they’re level with the top, then smooth around the base. Cover nails and the guide hole (see page 10) in the tabletop with timber filler, leaving to dry before sanding lightly using 120-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block.

Elevate the table on offcuts, then use a 50mm angled brush to apply three even coats of paint, leaving to dry between each. Use a mini roller with tray to apply three coats to the tabletop, leaving to dry. To attach the tabletop, apply adhesive underneath, centre it over the top of the table, push down and leave to dry. ◆

hen his family decided to put in a pool, homeowner Glenn reinvigorated his home’s entire outdoor area too. “I have young children who need to be supervised in the pool and I wanted an additional decking and seating area with a privacy screen – one that was comfortable but also looks great,” he says.

timber decks, and we wanted confidence that our investment would last for the long run!” HardieDeck is also adaptable to the seasons; as James Hardie’s fibre cement is deemed non-combustible, it can be set up for winter with a fire pit (not an option with timber). Plus it’s fully paintable, allowing it to be tied in with any outdoor scheme.

Poolside style

For screening, Glenn opted for James Hardie Linea weatherboard. “The Linea weatherboard screen ended up giving us much better privacy than other materials could, and it provides a visual connection to our home’s cladding,” says Glenn, who wanted to ensure any renovation aligned with the look of his home. “We really wanted the space to match the modern architectural style of our home, in neutral tones that wouldn’t date.”

The search for a good-looking decking material that could withstand water and sun led straight to HardieDeck. “HardieDeck is a great solution for areas around pools,” says Glenn. “We didn’t want all the constant maintenance hassles associated with “Our new outdoor room is such a practical, usable space” Glenn homeowner

Private eye

Builder Rod Jones worked with Glenn to create this chic outdoor space. Here, he lends his expert advice. 1. Choose the right product: “The wrong product can destroy any renovation, particularly when you’re dealing with outdoor weather conditions. The durability and low maintenance of HardieDeck and Linea made them the obvious choices for this project. You want to create a space to enjoy, not to maintain!” 2. Think creatively: “We don’t all have large outdoor spaces to work with, but that doesn’t mean we can’t come up with great solutions! Talk with your builder about how you can utilise what’s available. Consider sectioning off areas with a weatherboard barrier for privacy, or adding decking to flatten out a steep hill.” 3. Think about all seasons: “Plan for winter as well as summer. Your outdoor space will be used (hopefully) year round, so think about how you can make the most out of it in all conditions. The weatherproof nature of James Hardie products helps make your maintenance life much easier!”

very garden has ugly or tricky spots we’re not sure what to do with. That narrow stretch down the side of your house, shady corners or sun-scorched areas – generally places where nothing seems to thrive. Before you throw in the towel, read on for our expert tips on clever planting and hardscaping solutions to take your ‘problem areas’ from drab to fab. }

Don’t let an inch of your precious garden go to waste, with these tips to tackle problem areas bunnings |

Plan it

Turn over areas of poor soil and add organic matter for a nutrient boost

Build it! See page 58

Try tackling areas of heavy shade or poor soil by installing pavers

Deal with the dark side Shady spots often get a bad rap, but you can improve them by getting busy with your secateurs. “Prune back overgrown shrubs, remove lower tree branches and thin the canopy,” says Steve Falcioni, marketing manager at Eco-Organic Garden. This will open the space and make it feel more inviting. “Painting the surrounding walls and fences a lighter colour will also brighten the area,” he adds. Underfoot, look for pale pavers, and to really bring the area to life, choose a few plants that love shady conditions – think of plants that grow on forest floors. “Ferns, clivias, bunnings.com.au |

bromeliads and some palms really thrive in low light and will help add some colour, life and light to a dull space,” says Steve. In areas that are permanently shady, you can also give your garden a different sort of sensory appeal with a water feature or garden ornament. A simple fountain with a recirculating pump is all it takes to create some garden magic.

PRO TIP If you have a permanently soggy bit of ground, consider turning it into a pond or bog garden

bunnings

Combat hot spots Help baked backyards keep their cool with plants that introduce shade. “Trees like frangipanis and dwarf flowering gums are great at providing delicious cooling shade, as well as being lovely to look at,” says Steve. “When trees won’t do, consider a pergola and train climbers like ornamental grapes or mandevilla to grow up and over.” It’s important to also cover up any other sources of heat that might be nearby. “Walls and fences can reflect heat, so it pays to throw some shade on them too,” says Steve. Try hardy climbers such as clematis

Tackle the ground Poor soil – heavy on the clay or too sandy – is a common issue, especially on a newly developed property. It can take time and patience to improve soil, but stick with it. “Add organic matter and lots of it,” says Steve. Dig in composted manures, which work their magic by increasing nutrient levels and stimulating microbial activity. Also test the soil pH. “If it’s too acidic (below 6.5), add Eco-Flo Lime to help quickly reduce the acidity,” says Steve. Leaf litter and mulch helps lower soil pH. If the soil is too difficult to work, consider mounding it or planting in raised garden beds. You can build beds from appropriately treated wood or buy prefabricated ones. Fill with store-bought garden soil and add organic matter to give your plants the best start. Sort out a slope The right solution for a sloped site in your garden depends on a couple of factors. “You’ll need

or Hardenbergia violaceae (false sarsaparilla). When landscaping any sun-drenched areas, look for plants that have adapted to grow in extreme heat. Fleshy leaves of cacti and succulents, silvery-grey foliage of lamb’s ear, Teucrium or silverbush, and plants with small or skinny leaves, like Geraldton wax or emu bush, will thrive in the heat.

to consider if it’s stable, if there is an issue with run-off or if you need to install a retaining wall or similar to tame a slope,” says horticulturist Matthew Carroll of Hortiman (@hortiman). “If one wall isn’t doable, a series of low walls with level terraces may be the way to go.” For gradual slopes, plants are an effective solution. Shrubs with tight clumps or matted forms are effective at anchoring loose soil. “Dietes, Carpobrotus, agapanthus, Chinese star jasmine or Callistemon ‘Little John’ are all ideal candidates, and they’re fairly hardy once established,” adds Matthew. Improve your spaces When space is limited, it’s essential to make every bit count. Why let a dull corner in the backyard or the return at the side of the house be wasted opportunities? “To make any area more inviting, use pavers to create a sense of purpose and destination,” says Matthew. “This provides easy access and encourages you to explore and utilise the space.” You don’t need to pave the whole area, either – a ‘stepping stone’ arrangement with large pebbles between the gaps is both a cost-effective and eye-catching solution. Try landscaping along the sides of the house with plants or, if the space is too narrow, hang plants along the fence or fix baskets to brick walls using Whites lock-in brick hooks – no screws are required, making them a little easier to install. For larger spaces, outdoor furniture and attractive elements, such as a water feature or a fire pit, will instantly make an area more appealing. ¿

Closed case A security door offers another level of protection for your home, but the type you choose can depend on where you live. An aluminium door is corrosion-resistant (great for coastal areas) and is a visual barrier that may stop most burglars in their tracks. If security is a bigger issue in your area, opt for a solid steel door in a sturdy frame.

2

Light on

Motion sensor lights guide guests to your door, can scare off anyone who’s up to no good and make you feel more secure in your garden’s dimmest corners. Place at entrances, over dark paths and especially around the garage, which is a prime target for crims.

Wonder wand at work

Clean lines Grimy grout might be getting you down, but you can have sparkling floors again with the wave of a wand

A

s the weather begins to cool down, we’re looking forward to the season of indoor entertaining and snuggling on the sofa. But when we spend more time indoors, we’re more likely to notice grime. If staring at grubby grout lines on your floor tiles is distracting from your cool-season bliss, it’s time to break out the big guns and bring in a Britex Grout & Tile Wand.

Dirty dealings

Autumn can be a mucky time of year, with leaf litter and dirt from outside entering the house. While tiles are a fantastic choice for a fastidious homemaker, easily made pristine with a sweep and a mop, the grout in between is a different story. Mopping can actually make matters worse by pushing dirt back between the tiles where it makes itself at home over the grout. Solving this cleaning conundrum requires either wearing the cost of paying a professional or playing Cinderella yourself by getting down on your hands and knees and scrubbing with a brush. Britex systems are the modern day equivalent of a fairy godmother; there’s

tandem with the Britex Deep Cleaner, the hot water extraction system simultaneously sucks up all the dirty water, rather than pushing it back into the grout lines, as a regular mop would.

no Prince Charming at the end, but with a flick of a magic wand – or a Grout & Tile Wand, at least – you’ll have something even better: sparkling floors without the sore knees or chapped hands.

Behind the magic

The Grout & Tile wand works like a team of toothbrush-wielding little elves, using a combination of bristles and a sponge in the one handy head – bristles get in between the tiles to scoop out grime, then the sponge wipes clean. Used in

Complete floor overhaul

There’s something seriously addictive about sparkling clean floors – or perhaps it’s just the well-earned pride of knocking off a niggly job. Either way, why not prepare for the winter hibernation ahead by deep cleaning your carpet at the same time? Britex Deep Cleaners are available to hire with both Carpet Wands and Grout & Tile wands, so you can cleanse your carpet of dirt and allergens, and your tile grout of grime in one satisfying weekend purge.

Home Design ‘Bussi’ concrete pendant, $68.30, I/N: 7071532

Instant ambience Whether it’s a new table lamp or a pendant, switching up your light fittings is a brilliant decorating trick

E

very savvy decorator knows the value of good lighting. Not only does it give you ambience after dark, but stylish light fittings can also be a design asset during the day, enhancing a room with beautiful tones and textures. Upgrading your light fixtures is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to make your interiors shine.

Glowing review

If your lighting scheme is best described as ‘interrogation room chic’ – we’re talking undimmed downlights or bare bulbs – it’s time to get your glow on. Strong light serves a purpose for shining on work surfaces, but supplementing downlights with a lovely pendant or lamp, equals instant ambience. When choosing new fittings, look at the shape and material to see how it will throw out light – for

example, a narrow pool beneath a solid shade, or shadows cast through a woven one. You can also look at other ways to control your ambient lighting. Smart bulbs can make a basic light dimmable, while giving you unprecedented control over the temperature of the light (cool to warm) through an app or a smart home hub. Decorative bulbs, available in a range of shapes and colours, can be an aesthetic asset even when unlit.

Dancing in the dark

When you hit the shops, look for fittings with materials that sit well with other elements in your room; these might be natural fibres such as rattan or linen, industrial-style concrete, elegant glass, or metal in one of a range of finishes, from matt black and sleek chrome or stainless steel, to the warm glow of copper or brass.

Home Design ‘Pavi’ table lamp, $47, I/N: 0123716

Whatever your taste, there’s a light to suit, and finding one you love is a simple and effective way to imprint your personality on your home.

Sparkie optional

Any hardwiring has to be done by a licensed electrician, but there are now ways you can get a new lighting look without calling in a professional. Batten fix lights and DIY suspension kits are a total game changer in the world of lighting, allowing anyone to swap a boring bulb with a tasteful ceiling light or a dramatic pendant – and just as easily take it out if needed. Plug-in wall lights are almost as easy to install yourself, simply by attaching the fitting to the wall and plugging it in. Add these surprising DIY options to the extensive range of floor and table lamps and you can totally transform the look of a room, all by yourself.

Use the magic combination of weather protection, heat and light to make your outside space a comfy haven all year round

T

here’s no need to put your outdoor room on ice this winter. To create a cosy, trans-seasonal outdoor space, there are three essential features: protection from the weather, practical and ambient lighting, and a heat source for the coldest months. Nail these elements and you’ll have a year-round space you can enjoy, regardless of the weather forecast.

Good weather protection – a semi-permanent fixture or permanent structure – means you can enjoy being outdoors all year round. If you have a roofed patio, consider attaching outdoor bistro blinds. These work like temporary walls, which can go up and down when needed, and protect you from the cold weather elements. “It’s a lowcost way to create a contained outdoor space – they provide weather protection and can be rolled up, too,” says interior Bistro Blinds 0.75mm x 2700mm x 2400mm PVC outdoor blind in Clear/ Black, $156, I/N: 1280046

designer Shilpa Mohan (ddcgroup.com.au). For small spaces, like a balcony or courtyard, pick a fixture you can move, like a bamboo screen. “You could also plant a hedging plant like lilly pilly into a large planter box on wheels for a weather barrier and privacy screen,” says Shilpa. Permanent structures offer a more durable solution. “They’ll be more expensive, but will add more value to your property,” says Shilpa. The downside is you often can’t control the level of sun they let in or water they keep out. Plus, most permanent structures require approval from council or a certifier. For maximum protection, try timber or aluminium roofing or a battening system. “When it comes to size, aim for around 3.5m x 5m, which will allow for a decent-sized outdoor table and a barbecue area,” says Shilpa. “Another option is a permanent structure with louvres – they can be angled to allow the right amount of sun in, provide ample airflow and can be closed off completely in extreme weather.”

Lighting is one of the simplest ways to make an area inviting in winter, when darkness falls early. “It also increases your home’s safety and security,” says Jason Neophytou, lifestyle expert at HPM. If the space suits, consider hardwired lights. “They’re more powerful than solar or battery-operated lights, plus they come in a larger range of colours and styles,” says Jason. “However, they need professional installation, so can be more costly.” You’ll need to make sure your chosen lights are designed for outdoors, so check with your electrician. In tight spaces, cluster small, portable lights to create ambience. In a larger

backyard, combine lights from a variety of sources. “Up/down wall lights are great for entertaining spaces as they highlight features while drawing the eye away from less desirable areas,” says Jason. “Bollards and bunker lights are ideal for safely illuminating uneven surfaces and creating a path of light for visitors, while floodlights are perfect for entryways and garages.” Solar lighting comes in all shapes and sizes from spotlights to strings, and can be a budget DIY option. Solar deck lights can be installed straight into the deck, while solar garden bed spotlights are fantastic for highlighting feature plants or walkways.

Turn up the heat

A permanent source of warmth in your backyard helps to extend the life of your outdoor space. “A freestanding gas heater is perfect for patios, decks and smaller areas like courtyards and balconies,” says Peter Kamali, outdoor heating buyer at Bunnings. “They use radiant heat that travels through the air to warm where it’s needed most, up to 17 square metres. The only con is you’ll need to replace the gas bottle.” You could also consider a fire pit or chimenea. “Fire pits are a great source of heat and perfect for entertaining – nothing beats an open fire. Chimeneas, on the other hand, traditionally only have a small opening and are enclosed all the way up to the chimney, which helps contain the fire,” says Peter. For a larger area, he recommends combining

a few heating sources, such as heat strips installed in the ceiling, a gas area heater for the entertaining zone, and a fire pit for ambience. Safety is always important. “Look for a gas heater with concealed flames, plus a shut-off valve that will cut gas supply to the heating element if it falls over,” says Peter. “If you’re keen on a fire pit, make sure it’s situated a safe distance from the house and furniture, and always place it on a heat-resistant surface – that means no timber decks!” Open flame can’t be used on total fire ban days (check with your local authorities), and should always be kept clear of any combustible materials, while any electrical fittings must be rated for outdoor use and be installed by a licensed tradie. ¿

H

as your fence seen better days? A quick refresh can give your entire home and garden a facelift. The most common choices in Australia are our iconic timber paling or metal fences, both of which can be given new life by a handy DIYer.

When preparing a wooden fence for a fresh coat of paint, use a stiff scrubbing brush to help clean and ready the surface

Heavy metal If your metal fencing is in good nick but looking lacklustre, a fresh coat of paint could be all it needs. “Clear the working area and give the fence a wash down and scrub with sugar soap,” says Matthew Menichelli, director of Elevate Building Group (elevatebuilding.com.au). If there’s any rust, you’ll need to ensure you get as much of it off as possible, using a wire brush and steel wool. } bunnings |

All hedging plants require regular pruning to keep them looking good

Wear work gloves and a mask to protect your face and hands. “When the fence is clean, apply a metal primer so the new paint has a good surface to adhere to,” says Matthew Menichelli. “Once dry, apply two coats of paint in your desired colour.” Use a dedicated exterior paint for the job, such as Taubmans All Weather or Dulux Weathershield.

Choose a dark paint shade such as grey or black to help greenery stand out

Screen savers If an old fence is beyond saving, but a new fence is not yet on the cards, try screening. Options include decorative screens, hedges – both real and artificial – and vine-covered trellises. “If you’re using trellis, make sure it’s strong enough to hold the weight of your plants and that the uprights are suitable for inground use – for example, treated timber or galvanised steel,” says horticulturalist

Climbing plants can create a green screen to cover an old fence

Greg Symons of Gardens in Bloom. “Choose evergreen climbers for privacy, such as bougainvillea or Chinese star jasmine. Informal screening can be provided by plants like wonga-wonga vine and orange trumpet vine, which have striking flowering displays.” If hedging is your pick, Greg says some of the best exotic hedging options include photinia, camellias, orange jessamine, and a range of conifers. If you prefer natives, lilly pilly and many varieties of grevilleas, melaleuca, callistemon and leptospermum are all popular options. ◆

Wood work The same cleaning process used on metal fencing applies to wooden palings, but use a stiff scrubbing brush instead of a wire brush. “Clear the working area and give the fence a wash down and scrub. Hammer any protruding nails and replace palings that have twisted or rotted,” says Matthew. Timber paling fences tend to be thirsty and can soak up the paint, so may need two or three coats of colour.

Curtain call

Be inspired to transform your space and turn bare windows into a room’s most striking feature with beautiful window treatments

B

are windows are not only terrible for privacy and insulation, but they can make a home’s interior feel cold and unloved. On the other hand, the right window furnishings can bring a room’s whole scheme together. With an enormous range of ready-made curtains and blinds available and easier access to custom window treatments, it’s so simple to transform your windows.

Easy updates

Installing new curtains is one of the easiest ways to update a room, and it’s a design

tool accessible to both owners and renters. Tenants can upgrade curtains using the existing track, while adjustable finial ends make it possible to hang sheers or light fabric drapes within a window embrasure without having to get out the drill. Your personal interior style will inform your curtain selection. Embrace dark hues (especially with a matching deep colour on the walls) for a moody, old world look – just avoid dark colours if the room gets a lot of direct sunlight, as they can fade. Go for heavy or lavishly textured fabrics for a cosy effect, or at the other end of the spectrum,

choose long, floating sheers, light cotton or linen-style fabrics for a breezy, soft mood.

Decisions, decisions

There are lots of options beyond just curtains. For a slick, modern look, try blinds – fabric Roman blinds; Venetians in timber, aluminium and PVC, usually available with an extra long drop to suit all windows; vertical ones for maximum flexibility over sliding doors; and a cellular version for an insulation boost. Wood-composite PVC plantationstyle shutters are great for privacy and deliver a fresh, clean, coastal home look that is forever on trend.

Visual trickery

Sometimes the last thing you want to do is draw attention to a window – perhaps yours are at oddly different heights or framing an unpleasant outlook. Simplicity is the smartest solution here; choose furnishings that cover the window without drawing undue attention to the area. Blinds that blend into the wall are a fantastic solution, giving a beautifully streamlined look – take paint swatches shopping with you, or look for the Pillar range of blinds in a selection of the most popular Dulux neutrals for an exact match to your walls. Closing C the gaps Keep your home cosier this winter by eliminating any unwanted draughts

an you see daylight under your closed front door? Or do your curtains move even when the windows are closed? Gaps around doors, windows, floorboards and vents let in icy breezes, keeping your home’s temperature low and energy bills far higher than they should be. “It is vital to draught-proof your home, particularly in cooler months when heating appliances are heavily used,” says builder and designer Chris Knierim (codegreen.com.au). “Draught-proofing your home leads to less dependence on mechanical heating devices.” The good news is fixing draughts is often simple, and doesn’t usually require a lot of time or expense.  bunnings |

Find the leaks “A clear sign that your home isn’t draught proof is drastic fluctuations in temperature in relation to the outside climate,” says Matthew Menichelli, director of Elevate Building Group (elevatebuilding.com.au). A thermal imaging camera, if you can get access to one, can help to find the leaks around your home, but otherwise a good trick to locate gaps is to burn an incense stick near potential draught sites and see where the smoke goes. Assess the exits “The first place to start on leaks is your external doors,” Matthew says. “There’s always clearance in the door margins so that the door swings freely, and if there is no weather seal on the doorjamb, this is the number-one culprit of temperature loss in a home. Windows are a close second.” You can use a door snake to keep draughts out, but a more efficient and permanent solution is to attach a door seal to the bottom of the door. You may need to cut it down with a hacksaw to fit your door and, if it comes with an adhesive backing, it’s worth reinforcing this with screws; pre-drill the holes using a drill bit one size down from the screws. There’s a great variety of door seals available – including roller, PVC strip, storm proof, brush and auto lift – so you can choose the one that’s best for your situation. Adhesive weather strips are a quick and easy fix for leaking doors and windows. Clean (and sand if necessary) the area you need to attach it to, cut the strip to the right length, remove adhesive backing and simply smooth it around the door and window frames. Ensure you have the right thickness – too thin and draughts will still get through, too thick and your windows and doors won’t close properly. Cover up the cracks Some homes have unfortunate gaps in their floorboards and skirting that are an open invitation to winter chill. “There can be very small gaps where the skirting board and floor meet. A WORD OF WARNING Don’t make your home completely airtight. “When creating an airtight home, it’s important to install ventilation systems to provide controlled natural air into the home,” says Chris. This is especially important if you have gas heaters or appliances, and to avoid possible build-up of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that can emit from products such as new carpets and furniture, building materials and household cleaners. If you’re not sure how much you can safely seal – especially when covering vents – seek help from a professional.

gaps, the silicone, due to its flexibility, allows the natural movement in the timber while maintaining a sealed gap, reducing unwanted airflow,” says Chris Knierim. “Floorboards are another area where air leakage can occur, so sealing the joints between the boards and installing insulation underneath the floor between the floor joists is a good preventative measure against unwanted draughts,” adds Chris. Try a filler such as Selleys No More Gaps between the boards and use a caulking gun to seal the gaps between floor and wall. For bigger gaps, use expanding polyurethane spray foam. If you can access underneath the floor – as in a suspended timber floor – check the state of the insulation; many homes feature insulation that has been poorly installed and might be sagging and letting in cold air. If there’s no insulation at all, installing batts in a suspended timber floor is an achievable DIY job. But if you can’t access under the floor or need extra cosiness indoors, don’t underestimate the warming effect of a plush rug. Cables and pipes are often the culprits of wayward draughts. Check the points where the cables and pipes exit the house and fill any gaps with caulk or foam. Remember chimneys and vents “Chimneys are often overlooked when it comes to insulating, partly because they’re being used during the winter months,” says Matthew. “But when they’re not in use, consider installing a foam draught stopper and seal them up.” Fixed ceiling and wall vents are often a feature in older homes and can be a source of considerable draughts. You can try covering them with cardboard or clear contact for an instant temporary fix or, for a more permanent solution, replace them with closable vents. Roof access hatches and manholes can also leak cold air, which is where adhesive weather strips come in handy again. Fix these or air seals around the hatch and insulate the upper side by fixing rigid insulation to it. ¿

hether cooking is a labour of love or you prefer a heat-and-eat approach, the enormous amount of time you spend in the kitchen should be in a space that makes you feel good. Happily, a refresh doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Simple updates can turn the kitchen you already have into a space that’s a pleasure to work in, without breaking the bank.

“Replacing cabinetry and doors can really transform the space, and can be more cost effective than a total renovation,” says Briony Mikrou, Kaboodle Kitchen’s marketing communications manager. “Trends also come and go, so having the ability to change and update doors can keep your kitchen looking fresh and new.” While Shaker-style cabinets remain on-trend for 2020 (try the Kaboodle ‘Alpine’ profile for a Shaker-style look), interior designer and founder of Gather Studio (gatherstudio.com.au) Melissa Webster is a fan of the flat door too. “Don’t underestimate the power of this profile,” she says. “It’s a cost-effective option that can be dressed with a beautiful feature handle for a high-end look.”

2

Go for a new hue

If the cupboard doors are structurally sound but need a refresh, try painting them. Dulux’s Renovation Range paint is ideal for cabinet doors and works on timber, melamine and laminate surfaces. It’s good for vinyl and plastic-wrapped doors too, though these need to be primed before applying topcoat. (If you have 2pac cupboards, you’ll need to call in a professional.) Pick a colour that fits with other elements of the room, “particularly things like tiles, flooring and splashbacks,” says Dulux brand manager Romy Nayagam. Light tones and duck-egg blues create a coastal vibe, while charcoals, deep blues or rich greens bring a sophisticated feel. } Dulux Passionate Blue Dulux Airborne

A floating shelf in crisp white provides attractive and practical display space

Add a shelf

Shelves can really help to open up your kitchen walls and are a brilliant way to show off decorative pieces. There’s a wide range of finishes available – from timber and melamine to stainless steel – in varying widths and depths. For a streamlined look, choose a floating shelf with a hidden cavity bracket or, if you’re a fan of industrial style, go the other way and opt for chunky metal hardware to tie into the overall aesthetic.

Install new lighting

Statement lighting is another effective yet affordable way to enhance your kitchen’s wow factor. Apart from ensuring your lights blend in with the room’s overall style, you also need to make sure they are well positioned, are a good fit for the area in terms of size and are neither too bright nor too dull. Two or three dramatic pendant lights will make a great statement over a kitchen island; on-trend options include brass, natural fibres and sculptural shapes. You’ll need an electrician to help you refresh your lighting.

Replace the bench

Benchtops are the most-used product in a kitchen – and they will also be one of the first elements to show signs of wear and tear. “The best material for a benchtop swap is an independent laminate or timber top that is screwed from the underside of cabinet support rails into the benchtop,” says Briony.

“Durable laminate surfaces offer affordable, stone-inspired, wood grain and marble-look options that add visual interest to the space and are easy to install. Consider surfaces that are durable and easy to clean – there are laminates available with scuff resistance too, so your benchtop will stand the test of time.”

Make a splash

If those splashback tiles are looking a little dated, consider replacing them. With so many choices on the market, choosing new ones can seem tricky. “Mosaics in handmade finishes are here to stay, as we return to rustic, earthy and organic finishes,” says Melissa. Alternatively, repainting the splashback with a tile coating such as White Knight Tile Paint is a quicker, easier and budget-friendly option.

7

Select new hardware

Don’t underestimate the impact of tiny tweaks – swapping out your kitchen hardware is the perfect example. A new suite of cupboard and drawer handles, with complementary tapware, will instantly lift a space. “Match the style of handles and taps so that the lines complement each other,” suggests Melissa. On-trend finishes include brass, metallics, gunmetal and matt black, adds Briony. ◆

Use tile cleaner on the top of the pavers, washing away the residue. Apply a natural-look sealer using a mini roller, working quickly to apply two coats, then leave to dry for a couple of hours. Tip: Sealing pavers before laying keeps them looking cleaner for longer.

Rake the space to create a flat, even surface. Then position the pavers, spacing them using 184mm-wide timber offcuts. At the corners of the setup, use a mallet to tap metal pegs into the ground, leaving them to protrude by 50mm, then run string around the pegs.

green groundcover growing between pavers lends an impeccably manicured look. With this technique, you can lay on lawn, sand or soil, and there’s no need for major excavation; if laying on an established lawn, simply remove the top layer of turf with a shovel, then level and pack down the soil beneath.

Use a watering can to saturate the concrete mix then work quickly to position the first paver, agitating it slightly onto the base to sit evenly. Check that it’s flat using a spirit level, tapping into position with a rubber mallet and checking for square against the string.

hether it’s upcycling vases or sorting out storage, stylist and lifestyle creative Geneva Vanderzeil loves sharing projects that add a personal touch to your home. If you’ve followed her renovation journey on collectivegen.com or read her latest book, Home Is Where You Make It, you’ll be familiar with her dreamy natural colour palette. “I absolutely love paint,” she says. “It is such an amazing way to transform a space without having to spend too much or do something too drastic.” Keen to inspire others

to pick up a paintbrush, she’s put together this simple DIY headboard project. Colour crush Choosing the paint colour is the first step and one you don’t want to rush. Because the bedroom is such a personal space, consider what colours you’re drawn to and the feel you want to create – fresh, cocooning, tranquil, cosy? Most accent colours will work well with neutral white walls, just make sure you carry through the same undertone, whether it’s warm or cool. Inspired by the new Porter’s Paints capsule

collection available at Bunnings, Geneva selected sample pots in Timberline, French Green and Bayleaf to trial which shade of green would work best with her existing colour scheme and linen. “I painted a small section of each behind the bed and loved how Timberline looked in the bedroom’s natural light,” she explains. 

Use test pots to help select the perfect colour for your space and light conditions

“Choosing the colour is as much a part of this project as the actual painting is! Paint is utterly flexible and completely adaptable – and that’s why I love it” Geneva Vanderzeil stylist and lifestyle creative

Method

1

Cut out bunny ear shapes from the foam and stick onto the inside of the paper cups with PVA glue. Using a fine marker pen, draw bunny faces onto the cups under the ears. Using scissors, cut pipe cleaners to desired length of whiskers (we got three whiskers from one pipe cleaner). Using the sharp tip of the scissors, poke two small holes into each cheek of the bunny faces. Push pipe cleaner whiskers into each hole, bending the ends on the inside of the cups to hold them in place. Note: These cups are for decoration only.

DY E D E G GS What you need Food colouring  Small metal bowls  White vinegar 

Method

1

Decide how many colours to use and set out a bowl for each one. Pour 2 cups of hot water into each bowl, then add 1 teaspoon of vinegar and 10 drops of food colouring. Using tongs, gently lower eggs into the bowls, ensuring they are submerged in the coloured solution. Tip: Keep the eggs in the solution for varying amounts of time to create darker or lighter stain effects. After desired time, remove dyed eggs with tongs and place in an egg carton to dry.

Plant pick

Bulb and the beautiful What they look like The beauty of bulbs lies in their varied flowering forms, many colours – from soft pinks and creams to bold reds, pinks, yellows and purples – and their ability to brighten a garden from late winter. True bulbs include daffodils and tulips, but ‘bulbs’ broadly describes flowers that grow from underground storage structures, like corms and tubers. Where they grow Bulbs can grow in any part of Australia – if you select the right ones for your local climate. The cool soil temperatures of cold or cool-temperate climates help encourage growth and flowering. But bulbs also grow in warm temperate, sub-tropical and tropical zones – check plant labels to ensure a plant is suited to your area. Bulbs grow well in the garden or in pots and troughs.

Tulips

Daffodils

(Tulipa spp.)

(Narcissus spp.)

They come in nearly every colour in single or bi-colour forms, some even with cute ruffled edges.

A classic perennial, with narrow green leaves and sweet, golden yellow trumpet-like blooms.

Amaryllis

Freesias

(Hippeastrum cultivars)

(Freesia x hybrida)

Larger than life, but undemanding in nature, these showy flowers are a wonderful choice for tropical climates.

Available in a variety of colours, all with a sweet scent and flowers that last for weeks, even as cut blooms.

How to grow them Plant spring-flowering bulbs in April and May. In warm zones, you may need to store bulbs in a paper bag in your fridge crisper for four to six weeks prior to planting. Position in full sun to dappled shade and ensure soil is free-draining. Check the bulb’s packaging for correct planting depth. Water regularly to keep soil moist and, once shoots appear, apply a liquid fertiliser fortnightly. At the end of the season, wait for foliage to die down completely before digging up bulbs, then allow to dry and store. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

Why we love them Cheery daffodil blooms burst onto the scene from late winter. If you plant a variety of early and late-flowering bulbs, you can enjoy a festival of flowers from spring through to summer. They also make wonderful cut flowers.
